The Wall That Heals

This exhibit will be FREE to the public and open from Thursday 2 p.m. Oct 12 to Sunday 2 p.m. Oct 15 24 hours per day. Along with the exhibit will be an educational center. We also invite area schools to plan field trips to this exhibit and learn about the Vietnam War. For further information please visit our web page at:

The Fayette County Cultural Trust has partnered with the Department of Defense Vietam War Commemoration to provide Vietnam Veterans who visit The Wall That Heals a commemorative lapel pin. The Vietnam War Special Commemoration Flag will be on display during the event.

Be an Ambassador

Ambassadors will help with parking at the event, in the information tent and at the mobile education center. The job involves lots of standing and moving around. Volunteers will help greet visitors, find names on The Wall That Heals and answer questions. Ambassadors should be good listeners, willing to engage with everyone and let visitors tell their story.

Volunteers Needed – The Wall That Heals will be open to the public 24 hours from 12 October to 15 October and staffed by volunteers. Volunteers are needed around the clock to greet and assist visitors, should be 18 years old or older, and be able to stand for extended periods. No experience is necessary and volunteer training will be provided. Wear weather-appropriate gear as the exhibit is open rain or shine.

Set Up / Break Down

Volunteers are needed to help set up or break down The Wall That Heals exhibit, which requires some physical labor. Each panel weighs around 80 pounds. Volunteers should be fit, able to climb, lift, use sledgehammer and work outside for six to eight hours. Setting up involves unloading the trailer by hand and assembling The Wall and the mobile Education Center (EC). Breaking down involves disassembling The Wall and loading the trailer by hand. Ambassadors will help visitors by answering questions and helping find individual names on the memorial. Volunteers will need to attend a training session the day before the event begins. The exhibit will be open 24 hours a day for four days. Days shifts are typically two to three hours long, while night shifts are between four and six hours. Ambassadors will be needed between 2 p.m. on Oct. 12 through 2 p.m. on Oct 15, 2023. In addition to ambassadors, volunteers are needed for assembling the memorial and taking it down afterward. Assembly begins at 8 a.m on Oct. 11 and will take about six hours. The exterior of the trailer features a timeline of “The War and The Wall” and provides additional information about the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. Additional exhibits give visitors a better understanding of the legacy of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial and the collection of items left at The Wall.

Hometown Heroes – Photos of service members on The Wall who list their home of record from the local area.

In Memory Honor Roll – Photos of local Vietnam veterans honored through VVMF’s In Memory program, which honors veterans who returned home and later died.

A replica of the In Memory plaque that resides on the grounds of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial site in Washington, D.C. and reads: “In Memory of the men and women who served in the Vietnam War and later died as a result of their service. We honor and remember their sacrifice.” Items Left Behind – Displays of items representative of those left at The Wall in Washington, D.C. in remembrance of those on The Wall.
