Did You Know ? The Central Bank of Aruba has launched two new coins which celebrate the accession of Crown Prince Willem-Alexander who assumed the title of King on April 30th, 2013. The Prince of Orange became both the Dutch and Aruban head of state upon the official abdication of his mother Queen Beatrix on that day. Willem-Alexander became Aruba’s second head of state as an independent nation which was attained back in 1986. Aruba’s drinking water flows from the region’s largest desalination plant in the region. Perfectly pure and safe to drink and it is delicious as well. A carefully controlled balance makes Aruba’s water the softest in the world, a purposeful choice by engineers. The delicious flavor and purity is further maintained by battering the water with UV rays before injection into the distribution system, to prevent biological contamination, rather than adding chlorine as is the practice of nearly all other plants. A closed system filled with limestone pebbles now flavors the water and further removes particles and prevents contamination.

Did You Know ? The Old Mill is a reconstructed Dutch wind mill built in 1804 and was brought to Aruba in 1962. It faces the entrance of the bird sanctuary which is home of hundreds of annually migrating species and permanent resident birds. Walking back towards the Renaissance Hotel and to the right at its intersection is the original Protestant Church which was built in 1846. This architectural gem is nestled up against newer bigger edifices which serves the community and our guests. Frenchman’s Pass was named, according to the legend, for the french sailors who attempted to invade Aruba in the early 17th century. French pirates were confronted by Indians in this narrow passage above Spanish Lagoon. After this encounter, the passage became known as “Franse Pas” or “Rooi Frances” in Papiamento which translates to “Frenchman’s Pass” in English. Many Indians were killed during the invasion, and today inhabitants near Frenchman’s Pass claim they hear crying noises from the Indians during the evening. Some say the Indian ghosts are awake and haunting the area known as Spanish Lagoon.

Our Language Papiamento was declared Aruba’s official language, alongside Dutch, as of May 21st, 2003. It originated in the 1500’s to allow patrons and slaves to communicate with each other. It is the language spoken on the Caribbean islands of Aruba, Bonaire, and Curaçao (the so-called ABC islands). The basic ingredients are Portuguese and languages of West Africa, Dutch, Spanish and there are some Arawak Indian influences. The name of the language itself comes from papear (“to chat”, “to talk”), a word present in both Portuguese and Spanish. You may pick up words when you listen to a Papiamento conversation, and since it is always nice to hear visitors using our language, here we provide you a list of frequently used words:

Folklore & Traditions The earliest settlement of the island of Aruba brought to these shores a mélange of people from South America, European continents, the far East and other parts of the Caribbean. From all of these different cultures, a unique flavor of tradition has been added to the lives of its habitants and visitors to the island of Aruba. Aruba has some very interesting local folklore and traditions. Here are just a few of some of the fun practices that are practiced on our island:

“Shopping helps discover many new places and many new things. Say yes!. You deserve it.” Aruba Experience Travelers used to the finer things in life will experience pure bliss as they stroll around Aruba’s biggest shopping districts: Oranjestad, the picturesque town of San Nicolaas and the exciting high-rise hotel area. However, you will find brand stores located inside most hotels and throughout the island.

Aruba has an outstanding selection of duty-free items, such as clothing, accessories, jewelry, watches, cosmetics, perfumes and of course, spirits. For example, that means that you’re likely to find some of your favorite brands of perfumes at substantially lower prices than at home.

Cupcakes & Berries My sweet business is the fulfillment of a dream. A dream I’ve had from the age of fifteen. Yes, I’m only 24, but I’ve always known that when I’m baking, I’m in my zone. Experimenting with new recipes and flavors has been a passion of mine since the day my Mom allowed me near an oven. It’s more than just a hobby; it’s where I find my Zen. A little over a year ago, I managed to convince my Dad to make me a little cupcake booth (see below picture. Yes, that’s me). I had a plan. With such a cute booth, who could resist my cupcakes? Cookies N’Cream, Double Chocolate, Dushi Vanilla & Coconut too. Red Velvet, Tres Leches, and Strawberry Cheesecake just to name a few. Over 20 flavors to satisfy your sweet tooth. For your freshly made cupcake of choice, daily from 5.30pm till 10.30pm. We’re also at The Market Place located at the Alhambra Mall. Come on over after dinner, I look forward to meeting you. Te oro, Rose-Anne

While on Aruba you can...

Get adventurous! Try our Aruba Experience Photo Challenge: Drive around the island to the north shore and look for wildlife: 25 points for a wild donkey, 20 points for a parrot in nature, 15 points for an iguana crossing the road (they have the right way) and 50 points for a rabbit. If you get 110 points you will receive a gift certificate for two for a sunset sail. If you can score at least 70 points you will receive an Aruba Experience T-shirt. For more info please e-mail: info@arubexperience.com. Make a Wish Drive to the northern coast of Aruba and you will see a lot of rock stackings. Find rocks to your liking, collect them and build a tower and then on each rock make a wish. You must stack a minimum of three rocks on top of another. Make a wish for love, wealth, health, or anything you feel compelled to wish for. Everything is possible if we believe! Celebrate every sunset while you’re here! Sunsets are an extra special event in Aruba. Watch the ever changing colors of the sky change from brilliant oranges and reds to pastel pinks and dense violets. Watch the sun go down and take a close look for the “green flash”. Just as the sun sinks below the horizon a fleeting green light illuminates the water’s edge. Only the lucky ones will see this wonder. Make your own Aruba souvenir That soft, smooth wood you see scattered along the coastline at the beach is called driftwood and it can be your most amazing Aruba souvenir. Something special for you or as gifts to family and friends. Pick up driftwood pieces and clean each piece thoroughly. Brush the sand off with a cleaning brush, then rinse with water and allow to dry. Glue assorted shells or layer of colors or leave it plain and make a welcome sign for your front door. Remember your Aruban driftwood piece is a one and only...there are no others like it in the world.

Our Arubnace! Experie

By Gary & Margie Nash

“One Happy Island” is absolutely what should be on every Aruban license plate! It is certainly true that there are a myriad of things to do on this island paradise, but it is the PEOPLE that makes us come back for more. Both air and water temperatures consistently in the 80’s are appealing, but there are other desirable places around the globe that may be Aruba’s equal. But, again, it’s the people. Customs officials, taxi drivers, resort and restaurant personnel, with a warm smile and engaging talk, make you feel welcome. It’s easy to strike up a conversation with someone you’ve never seen before and may never see again, so how does one single out a best experience in Aruba?

68

That’s easy if you’re aboard a sailing schooner for an experience you’ll never forget. There’s snorkeling over the WWII shipwreck, Antilla; a second anchorage in just 12 feet of crystal clear water for a leisurely swim or viewing thousands of tropical fish; or rope swinging at the third anchorage--a challenge to see who can do more than just the routine swing out and drop into the water. But once again, it’s the people! The crew ensures that everyone has a “yo, ho, ho” good time. They are serious about the safety rules, but everything else is fair game. The drinks are free-flowing at the open bar, but it’s the crew that makes all aboard lose inhibitions. Pranks abound, but no one is offended. These guys are having so much fun, they shouldn’t be allowed to collect a paycheck. Aruba is truly an island paradise, and yes, it’s the people on “One Happy Island” that makes it genuinely unique, but some people REALLY stand out--and that would be the crew aboard our water activities and the countless others we encountered during our visit.
