SoundLab SoundLab allows our clients to hear what their building, road, railway or airport will sound like, before it’s built. We can create sound environments for different options to allow for informed design decisions. SoundLab is an auralisation suite designed by Arup that allows clients, architects, engineers and stakeholders to hear how design can shape the noise or sound in different environments and under different conditions. It is used to optimise the design of everything from train stations, sports stadia and airport terminals to concert halls, roads and wind farms. In the SoundLab, Arup can play sound demonstrations that accurately reproduce the level and character of sound. Synchronised video is also played as often people feel that their impression of what they hear is influenced by what they see.

GIS We use geographical technology creatively to understand, manage and share ideas about the built and natural world. We use geographic information systems (GIS) technology to visualise, manage, analyse and collate data based on any location. Our GIS solutions make it simpler and quicker for our clients to manage their assets geographically, to identify opportunities, reduce risk and adapt to better face the future. Arup combines IT and communications expertise with specialist market knowledge to tailor innovative GIS solutions. These range from web-based mapping tools to 3D models, often incorporating building information modelling (BIM). But they always focus sharply on practical outcomes, from predicting floods to planning business logistics. Arup evaluated the performance of three plausible futures for a 9ha city block within central Adelaide. Our innovative methodology evaluates physical, social and resource implications of urban design options, bridging the gap between urban design and sustainability analysis and communicates outputs as 3D models, data and graphs and infographics. The project used Arupâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s (Integrated Resource Management) a quantitative model created to improve understanding of urban systems. Using complex mathematical models to provide a life cycle assessment of precincts, towns and cities.

Building Physics Building envelope and environmental physics is a specialist discipline within Arup to assist with rapid concept design, optimising building performance, energy demand and improving occupant comfort against environment factor such as wind, solar, glare for particularly tall buildings. We provide rapid prototyping of building design for master planning, external views, fluid dynamics and structure, geometry, reflected glare, environmental and pedestrian wind, outdoor comfort (including urban realm, retail, balconies, sky gardens, operable windows); and wind modelling (CFD and tunnel). Our analysis aims to maximise building performance and indoor quality considering aspects of air quality, daylighting, building energy, microclimate, pollution dispersion, indoor air flows, natural ventilation, renewable energy, solar access and thermal comfort.

Mass Motion Mass Motion can predict the movement of hundreds of thousands of individual personalities in a complex 3D environment. Mass Motion provides designers, operators, and owners with clear information about crowding, usage patterns and occupant safety in a facility. This predictive power enables positive decisions to be made early in the design process with minimum cost and disruption. As designs evolve or issues arise, MassMotion can be used to conduct scenario testing for further optimisation of the program and form of a project. An important aspect of MassMotion is its analysis capability, once the simulation has completed you can analyse how long it took people to get from one point to another and tell flow rates for doors, stairs and escalators.
