South African Tourism targets Delhi’s Ultra HNHs through travel agent training programme

S

outh African Tourism concluded the 7th edition of its annual travel trade training sessions in Delhi on July 12. Aimed at equipping travel agents with the best tips to sell the destination, ‘Learn South Africa’ (Learn SA) is a 17-city training programme which covered urban metros and tier II & III markets. The sessions were structured to ensure that travelers enjoy many new, exciting, tailor-made itinerary options as a direct result. “Learn SA helps ensure that Indian travel agents know how to choose the best quality hotels for their customer’s budget and needs. It also teaches them how to choose the best in-destination partners to escort the traveller while on holiday. It also gives them updates about new things to see and do in South Africa and basics like visa and logistical know-how to ensure that travelers are catered to efficiently,” said Hanneli Slabber, Country Manager India, South African Tourism. The preference for holidays in South Africa has been on a rise amongst Indian travellers over the past few years and is expected to continue in 2017. “2016 was a milestone year for us at South African Tourism in India and we are determined to set new benchmarks for the industry as well as ourselves by making 2017 bigger and better. Our internal target is to welcome more than 100,000 Indian visitors in 2017 and we couldn’t be more thrilled to work towards and achieve this target,” added Hanneli Slabber. Indian leisure visitor numbers to

South Africa surged 21.7% during 2016 to close at an arrivals figure of 95,377 and 8th position among South Africa’s international source markets. South Africa is the perfect destination for the well-travelled Delhite with its variety of distinctive attractions, unforgettable experiences, world-class facilities and excellent infrastructure. It attracts both luxury as well as budget travelers. One of Learn SA 2017’s focus areas was to train travel agents about new destinations such Oudtshoorn, Knysna, Plettenberg Bay, Port Elizabeth and the Drakensberg region beyond the immensely popular Cape Town, Durban, Johannesburg & surrounds and Kruger National Park. These are picturesque areas where travelers can pack in a lot of action into shorter time-spans. Over 70 international airlines now fly into South Africa. Efforts are on to increase seat capacity on relevant flight routes ex-Delhi. Presently, Delhi is connected to South African cities by Emirates, Ethiopian Airlines, Etihad Airways, Turkish Airlines, Air Mauritius, Jet Airways and Air India which fly via their respective hubs. Travelers have a variety of airlines, connections and consequently, multiple fare options to choose from. The Rand (ZAR)-Rupee exchange rate has been relatively favorable for the India market. Since the South Africa product quote comes in ZAR and not US dollars, Indian travelers are able to buy more experiences and activities for less money thus, making South Africa a value-for-money destination. august 2017 | destination exotica 9

Walk the Buddha Path

in Bihar

Buddhism is a widely practiced religion in India and it is brimming with devotees who meditate to develop traits of wisdom, awareness and kindness. Buddhism was born in India, grew in India, and then branched out to teach people the way of life. Bihar is an important landmark in the Buddha journey and tourists must surely visit the Buddhist circuit in the state to know and learn more. Arushi Bajaj

Gaya

The place of enlightenment Gaya, the name is derived from the Gayasur – a holy demon. The demon was killed by Lord Vishnu by using the pressure of his foot over him, which led to series of rocky hills that make up the landscape of the city. The city is a land to many holy sites with natural beauty that add charm to the temples, ghats and trees like peepal and banyan are correspondingly sacred. The most popular temple today is Vishnupad Temple, a place along the Falgu River, marked by a footprint of Vishnu incised into a block of basalt that marks the act of Lord Vishnu subduing Gayasur by placing his foot on Gayasur’s chest. For Buddhists, Gaya is a significant pilgrimage place because it was at Brahmayoni hill that Buddha preached the Fire Sermon (Adittapariyaya Sutta) to one thousand former fire-worshipping ascetics, who all became enlightened while listening to this discourse. At that time, the hill was called Gayasisa. About 15 km from Gaya town is Bodh Gaya, the place where Gautam Buddha got enlightenment under the banyan tree, the Bodhi Tree. Since then the places around Gaya (Rajgir, Nalanda, Vaishali, Patliputra) had been the citadel of knowledge for the ancient world. It was the sacred place where Prince Siddhartha became the Lord Buddha. He established “Middle Path Pratipada”, the excellent means to life for the entire human race. It is a

very renowned and developed holy Buddhist place where he got the supreme knowledge. It is also known as Ancient Uruvela and now Bodhgaya. Mahabodhi Temple is the oldest remains there and was declared as the World Heritage by UNESCO in 2002. It’s a two storied and pyramid shaped architecture built with blue bricks. The beautiful four temples surrounding the main temple is an exemplary model example of rich and ancient temple architecture of India.

Nalanda

Learning with inspiration A very prominent Buddhist site Nalanda, is one of the world’s oldest living cities. Here, Buddha stayed for some time and it is known for the ruins of the world famous ancient learning centre. The Buddhist University of Nalanda, once the most prestigious centre of learning in Asia, was built here. The evocative ruins of its monasteries and temples still convey a vivid impression of the serene and ordered life of contemplation and learning that prevailed here. Nalanda resonates as an inspiration to anybody who heard about this place as the nurturing ground of the first residential international university of the world for great learning during the era when most of the other countries of the world were at the very nascent stage of development. Today, the ruins of that glorious past continues to mesmerise the present. The

district, well-connected by network of roads and railways, has been a cradle of multiple religious evolutions. Apart from Buddhism, Jainism, Sufism and Hinduism have also flourished in this region with the patronage from the generations of benevolent rulers. The district is situated at the south of Patna.

Bhagalpur

Evidence of modern city Bhalgalpur is one of the foremost cities of the state. The historical evidences suggest that the modern city of Bhagalpur was Champavati, the capital of Anga,

one of 16 Mahajanapadas. Lord Buddha also visited Champa, where a large number of people became his followers. The Buddha offered several sermons here, including one charity. It was here that the Buddha was compelled to prescribe the use of slippers by the monks. The Chinese traveller on his way home also visited Champa (He referred Chen-Po) and mentions it in his accounts about various Stupas, Viharas and Buddhist monks. Though it is learnt that Buddha never visited Vikramshila, Bhagalpur, this place in Bhagalpur district in Bihar is extremely important for the Buddhists

for the simple reason that it was one of the most important centres of learning in India along with the Nalanda University in the bygone era. Vikramsila in its golden period had more than one hundred teachers and about one thousand students. Presently ruins of Vikramsila University can be explored in Bhagalpur region of Bihar.

Patna

Splendid heritage Patna, the capital city of Bihar is counted amongst those few old capital cities in the world that have an uninterrupt-

ed history. An amazing Buddhist tourist destination, Patna makes for a good base to start a trip. Moreover, the city was also visited by the Buddha who knew it as Patiligama then. On a number of occasions, he is also believed to have passed through this city, including for his last sojourn to Kusinara where he gave a talk ‘that went far into the night’. Later, Ashoka, who had a great contribution in spreading Buddhism, made Patna the venue for the third Buddhist Council. The city has quite a few attractions today that interest Buddhist tourists immensely. Patna is not only a major gateway to august 2017 | destination exotica 17

Two businessmen of Utkal Tapassu and Bhallik, who were passing by this place, became his first disciples. After this fist teaching, Buddha started travelling towards Sarnath. It is said that in ancient period, here there have been a Rajat (Silver) Tree, a rare plant. The grandeur of the images of the Buddha and other decorated artefacts found here are fascinating attractions that make the place an indispensable tourist point. The vastness along with aesthetics strikes the visitor as soon as the ancient stupa comes into the sight. The legend says that this is the place where the Buddha spent time while on his last journey to Mahaparinivarna. He is said to have made historical revelations of wisdom here. It was here that the Buddha announced the approaching of his Mahaparinirvana. During one of his visits here, the Buddha was offered a bowl of honey by a monkey. This city is believed to have hosted Lord Buddha five years after he had attained enlightenment. This place holds a special importance for the Buddhist devotees. Lord Buddha had delivered his last sermons here. Vaishali is also a sacred place for the Jains as Lord Mahavira was born in Vaishali. Vaishali is then twice blessed and remains an important pilgrim center for both Buddhists and Jains, attracting also historians foraging for the past.

In Rampurva in West Champaran, two gigantic Ashokan pillars were built close to the river Harbora, known as Anoma River during Buddha’s time. One of the pillars has six edicts engraved on it, which even today is protected by a concrete canopy. There is a peacock along with another bird etched on the pillar. A lion capital that formed the part of one pillar is now preserved at the Museum of Kolkata. The other pillar had the famous Bull Capital, which adorns the Rashtrapati Bhawan in New Delhi. Jehanabad is mentioned in the ‘Ain-i-Akbari’, written by Mughal emperor Akbar’s court historian and poet Abul Fazl. It says that in the 17th century the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb established a relief centre for the famine affected people at this place and named it as ‘Jahanara’. Jahanara Aurangzeb’s sister supervised the Mandi herself and spent a lot of time at this place. Later, the area became known as Jehanabad. Kauva Dol in Gaya district is still not much explored by tourists although the infrastructure has improved a lot during the last decade. A magnificent ancient Buddha statue of black stone in a sitting posture, measuring about 8ft tall had been excavated from this site. The sculpture has been placed in a small shrine and next to the shrine lay the scattered pillars, some only visible partly above the ground as the remains of a Buddhist monastery which are still to be excavated. Few yards away, at the foothill rocks of the hill there are fantastic engravings of numerous Hindu gods and goddesses. Most of the carvings are of goddess Durga and other deities like Ganesha and Shivlingas. There lies one of the fantastic archaeological sites yet to be discovered from the grave of the past. Under a huge Peepal tree the tiny shrine protects the 8’ black stone Buddha sculpture which was found at this place. Outside, below the tree, the glorious past lay silently with few pillars strewn around and rest only partly visible from underneath the earth. A few yards walk towards the nearby hill the amazing engravings of Hindu gods and goddesses are found along the rocks of the base of the hills. Goddess Durga and Devi forms are predominant among other Shivlinga and Ganesha images. It is quite a unique experience to see all the images of the deities without any intention to enshrine those inside a structured temple boundary but just spread across the nature as if to imagine the Omnipresent beyond any man-made borders. Capers From Farm to Fork...

Capers are one of the most desired ingredients used in Mediterranean cuisine, which were not readily available in India – until a family decided to grow them in their ‘Ishka Farms’ in Tamil Nadu. Here’s more on them...

Capers are one of the most desired ingredients of Mediterranean cuisine and now Indians too can savour its unique flavour. Ishka farm is the first organised commercial farm in India to grow Capers. The family-owned farm started caper cultivation after importing the first saplings from Argentina. The savoury bud harvested from Ishka Farms has made it to the kitchens of well known restaurants and hotels across the country.

that is hand-picked, dried and then pickled in brine or packed with sea salt. Curing enhances the flavour of the caper, which is a combination of piquant, lemon-y and salty. A caper plant survives for more than 80 years. Graded capers are not available in India. Ishka’s USP is that there are four perfectly graded sizes available. The Farm produces small, medium and large capers. The size depends on the stage at which the bud is harvested and also determines the taste. The smallest that are 5mm to 7mm are more flavour-intense. The larger, fleshy ones ranging from 9mm to 11mm and 11mm to 13mm tend to be more acidic. For the salted variety, Ishka Farms uses sea salt from the salt pans of

Tuticorin. Ishka Farms’ capers are quite sharp, tangy and aromatic and handy in sauces or as a garnish. The Caper has made its way to high end restaurants and hotel chains across the country as they prefer to source local fresh produce because the flavours. Locally procured produce are always preferred by Chefs. “Capers from Ishka farms guarantees that the capers are fresh and is the current season’s harvest and not something that is of earlier seasons. This is important especially when you supply to top end restaurants. Chefs are very particular about the crunchiness and mouth feel of the capers. When they are stored for long, the mouth feel and flavours diminish,” says Ms. Arakal Buying Capers from Ishka Farms gives Chefs across the country an option where they customise their requirement in terms of acidity and saltiness. The Capers are organically grown and tested at international certified labs. So bring home those fresh freshly cured capers from Ishka Farms! De

Pardesi Synagogue The synagogue features and ornate gold

pulpit and beautifully hand painted willow patterned floor tiles from Canton, China which were added later in 1762. Originally built in 1568, the building was partially destroyed due to Portuguese attacks in 1662. Built two years after the Dutch took over Kochi, it holds the treasures of Belgian Chandeliers and coloured glass lamps.

St. Francis Church Believed to be India’s oldest European church, it was constructed in 1503 by Portuguese Franciscan friars. The original monument was built in wood while the current structure was only constructed in the mid-16th century. The explorer Vasco Da Gama was buried in this church for almost 14 years before his remains were shifted to Lisbon. However, visitors can still visit his tombstone in the church.

How will GST affect

your travel plan...?

T

he GST Council has already announced the rates of Goods and Services Tax applicable on the supply of various goods and services. These rates are distributed across different rate bands of 5 per cent, 12 per cent, 18 per cent and 28 per cent. One such service, which is extensively used and is one of the booming sectors of the Indian economy, is the travel industry. Will GST impact the travel industry adversely or favourably? The industry believes that the higher tax slabs will impact and hinder growth, putting pressure on the bottom line and squeezing the margins of industry players. The travel industry primarily includes transportation services and hotel and accommodation. GST impacts both sectors differently. After implementation of GST, transportation services, which include airlines and railway services, have been affected in different ways. Cost of travel for airlines economy

In the current competitive scenario; the airlines are not expected to pass on the increased tax burden to passengers as it might affect their occupancy rates. Domestic air travel is clearly going to see a boost post GST with air prices reducing. Budget travellers, therefore, have a reason to cheer and plan for the upcoming holidays. On the other hand the Business Class fares are going to cost higher,

however, it is only a marginal increase from 9 to 12 per cent. This slight increase in travel prices is probably not enough to discourage business travellers from their travel plans. If you are a frequent flier, you will find the impact of GST on air fares and the new tax rates and ticket prices to your liking. The reduction in tax rate is positive for

low-cost domestic flier. With the Goods and Services Tax (GST) coming into effect from July 1, rail passengers will have to pay a little more to travel AC and first class. Currently, there is service tax applicable on the transport of goods and passengers. The railways also enjoy a 70 per cent abatement which means only 30 per cent of the value is taxable under service tax. Thus, the effective rate is equal to 30 per cent of 15 per cent is equal to 4.5 per cent of the total fare. After

the levy of GST in respect of passengers travelling in second class and sleeper class. This results into benefits to middle and lower income group consumers. Under Earlier Tax Regime the hospitality industry, like every other sector in the Indian economy, was liable to pay multiple taxes like VAT, luxury tax, and service tax. A hotel where the room tariff exceeded INR 1,000 was liable for service tax at 15 per cent. An abatement of 40 per cent was allowed on the tariff value, thus

bringing the effective rate of service tax down to 9 per cent. The Value Added Tax and luxury tax, would apply on top of this. Under the Goods and Service Tax, the hospitality sector stands to reap the benefits of standardised and uniform tax rates, and easy and better utilisation of input tax credit. As the final cost to end user decreases, we can expect the industry to attract more overseas tourists than before. This would ideally result in improved revenues for the government, and there are many pros to this new tax regime which could help the industry’s growth in the long run. For instance, complementary food (like breakfast) was taxed separately under VAT, but now it will be taxed under GST as a bundled service. Let’s have a look at the rates for this industry in detail Overall impact of GST on hospitality industry will be beneficial as it will mitigate the cascading effects of multiple taxes levied under earlier tax regime which results into benefits to travellers. For consumers, GST will bring slight hike in prices when it comes to travelling and hotels. But it will benefit in long run as it will mitigate the cascading effects of multiple taxes paid. Input credit available to industry will somehow reduce burden of taxes on consumers in long run as duplication of taxes will be deleted and it will fall back in the lap of consumers.De august 2017 | destination exotica 43

Protecting

hair&skin

from humid onslaught Hot and humid weather can damage your hair and skin terribly. It’s important to take appropriate care of these two, especially during the excessively perspiring summer months. So, if you are tired of the dull, damp and patchy skin and are keen on rejuvenating it without emptying your wallet at a parlour, follow these few simple instructions, which will give your skin its shine back – no matter what the weather!

Team DE Keep yourself well-hydrated

W

ater is the best antiseptic and keeps you hydrated. Have 10-12 glasses of water daily. This will help in maintaining the balance of body fluids and body temperature. It flushes impurities and toxins out of the system keeping your face fresh and clean and thus aid in reducing the breakouts and acne. So do not miss on to this simple hack.

Wash your face thrice a day This trick will help keep your skin beautiful and soft this summer. Cleansing your

face three times a day with water alone will keep you apart from germs and bacteria that settle on your face. Use a product that suits your skin. Also, remember to wash your face with cold water before you proceed with the face wash. This is because direct contact with heated skin is not considered very healthy. What cleansers do is that they remove clogged impurities, balance excess oil and sweat, and protect your skin from breakouts or acne. A good face massage while cleansing leaves the skin fresh and beautiful.

Moisturise and apply sunscreen Your skin needs moisturiser in summers too. But many people neglect moisturiser when temperatures are high, and that’s a mistake. You might feel that the skin is greasier and therefore you should keep up the same moisturising regimen you use in the winter. If you spend much time in air-conditioned environment, it’s mandatory for you to keep a moisturiser handy. As you expose more of your skin in the summer season, it’s important to take the correct precautions to protect yourself from the sun. Applying sunscreen (as well as wearing protective clothing and hats) is a crucial procedure in protecting yourself. The benefits of sunscreen decrease when it’s not applied frequently enough or if it gets washed off or sweated off. The higher the Sun Protection Factor (SPF) number, the more protected you are.

Weekly short – facials or clean-ups Your skin tends to get tanned very easily during this time. Not just that, it tends to collect more dirt, oil, and pollution. You can, however, take care of this problem by getting weekly facials or clean-ups

Quick tips l Make sure your regular diet includes Vitamin E and Omega-3. These nutrients are rich in oils and help to nourish the skin from inside. Also take Vitamin C to as it helps to boost your resistance against diseases which are common in humid weather. l Use skincare products that contain chamomile, aloe vera, cucumber and lavender as they are soothing for skin and help to heal skin in the most natural way l When it comes to choose face moisturizer, go for the ones with serum or gel like consistency and make sure it contains lots of anti-oxidants to prevent skin rashes during humid weather. Oil free and non-comedogenic (do not clog pores) moisturisers are best for humid weather. l Go for detox facials to help drain the body toxins l Fungal and bacterial infections are pretty common in humid weather. So use a good anti fungal powder on all body folds to avoid these infections. l Always remove makeup before going to sleep at night. This will help your skin to breathe as well as repair and replenish.

Use cold water While it is alright to have a hot bath, make sure you only use cold water to wash your hair. Washing hair with cold water helps in sealing up the pores, this way the moisture present in your hair remains intact and does not come out.

Regular oiling and avoid using brush The damp and humid weather tends to make your hair lifeless and dull. To protect your hair and keep it smooth, regular oiling becomes a necessity. It will also ensure that your hair remains strong and healthy. Don’t brush your hair; use a wide-tooth comb instead. These tend to be way less harsh when it comes to untangling your locks.

Use a serum and conditioner After washing your hair remember to put some serum on damp hair. Apply the serum on your strands and the part of your hair which is more prone to dryness. One thing you need to ensure is to use only the required amount and nothing more than that. Using a little too much of serum may affect your hair adversely. Hair conditioner has more uses than you may realize. If you’re not using one, or you’re not using the right conditioner, you’re missing out on more than just detangled hair. Some of the many benefits of hair conditioners include- softer hair, less tangling, less colour fading, less frizz, better moisture retention, protection from the environment and protection from breakages.De august 2017 | destination exotica 47

His work and predictions are carried on regular basis in prominent nationwide Indian newspapers, magazines, periodicals and on Internet. He can be contacted at Parashar@parashar.com

ARIES (March 21 to April 20) The horoscope predicts that majority of the planets are in the Southern sector (mid heaven sign) this month. This month will be magical and life-changingwhen it comes to your love life. If you’re single, you’ll be delighted to know that three significant planetary events will highlight the area of your chart that rules romance. Career will take a back seat and the emphasis will be on domestic matters and emotional aspect of life for the Aries. Power struggles are likely to emerge mid-month when tender Venus opposes obsessive Pluto. Fighting is not necessarily a bad thing in a healthy relationship, but pick your battles wisely. TAURUS (April 21 to May 20) Majority of the planets are in the Southern half of the horoscope and the House of Career is overshadowed by the House of Family. You will have to attend to your household problems and focus on maintaining harmony in your relationships in August 2017. Get ready to feel all the feels, because both of August’s eclipses (on the 7th and 21st) are going to hit you deeply. How you experience and process your feelings and then take care of yourself around them is everything this month. There’s so much lunar activity that you’re likely to feel saturated, and that will make it hard to tell what you need from what you merely want—even though the difference is so very important. As you grow, you’ll inevitably have to outgrow some things, Taurus. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Horoscope foretells that the planetary power is situated in the lower half of the horoscope and the House of Family is very strong. The empha-

sis will be on solving domestic problems and enhancing your psychological strength. The Gemini zodiac sign will direct their efforts towards renovation and decoration of the house. You will have the support of planet Venus for these things in August 2017. A conversation with your sweetheart near August 20 might help you and your lover bring back romantic sparks. In fact, after August 21, it looks as if you and your mate will be ready to make a significant decision about your relationship. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) The planetary power exists in the Southern sector of the horoscope (mid heaven sign) this month and the House of Family will become dominant after the mid of August 2017. This month is dominated by the family and planetary aspects are beneficial for relationships. Family atmosphere is extremely pleasant for the Cancerians in August 2017 and expansion is likely with marriages and births. Love planet Venus continues to move through your sign until August 26, so you’ll have the great majority of this month to continue enjoying the sweet pleasures she’ll bestow upon you. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Horoscope foretells that the planetary power is located in the Eastern sector of the horoscope this month towards your ascendant sign. This is the right time to decide your priorities and act with persistence to achieve them. On August 7, you and your partner can anticipate a significant turning point in your relationship. On this day, a Lunar Eclipse signals an awakening for you about the current state of your love life. Are you fulfilled together, or is something missing? You’ll both want to approach these answers as logically as possible in order to determine whether or not

you should keep moving forward together on the same path. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Many of the planets are shifting to the Southern sector of the horoscope towards the mid heaven sign. By the end of August 2017 both the sectors are equally powerful. So both professional life and family issues require equal attention. You might feel as if you and your partner are speaking different languages this month. From August 12 on, this might be a particular nuisance - especially if there is a vital conversation you need to have, or a decision you need to make together. One option is to put a pin in all essential dialogue until after September 5 and try to be in the moment with one another instead. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Horoscope predicts that there is a planetary movement to the Southern sector of the horoscope (mid-heaven sign) and this half will become more powerful after the 17th of the month. The Libra zodiac sign people have to juggle between outer ambitions and domestic welfare and psychological matters. A major turning point in your love life is possible near August 7 thanks to Lunar Eclipse lighting up your romance sector. You may have to take personal risks that are a bit scary this month; make sure that they’re not lateral shifts. This isn’t time for you to phone it in—your values need to be reflected in the life you’re building or it’s time to change the plan, my love. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 22) The planetary power is indicated in the Northern sector of the horoscope and the House of Career is very dominant. Professional goals will prevail over domestic matters and emotional factors for the Scorpio sun sign in August 2017. Consequences are catching up with you and, like it or not, you’ve got to answer to your past, Scorpio. This month’s eclipses are going to make you feel your feels extra intense, so it’s important that you’re gentle with yourself and others. Instead of seeking to at-

tach blame or excuses to your problems, figure out what you need: Only then can you assess what it’ll take to ease you through this period. There’s no limit to your potential, only to your willingness to take on the right kind of risks.
