ABOUT The Delhi Public Library was launched by the State Government under the ‘Adult Education Scheme’ and was inaugurated in 1947 by Sardar Vallabhai Patel. It is inspired by Adam Khan’s tomb in terms of site planning and structural form. The library mainly catered to Mehrauli. In 1972, Jawaharlal Nehru Yuva Kendra, an autonomous organization under Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, within the Government of India, set up its Head office. The Library was shut in early 2000 and is opened every three months for mainenance. The site is primarily used by JNYK sangathan’s staff. It is underutilised leading to wastage of resources while possessing the potential to be developed into a social infrastructural asset. Clockwise from top: Approach to the Library, Arched corridor of the structure, Portion of the site turned into a dumpyard, Boundary wall of the site.

03. DISSERTATION
SETTLE UN-SETTLE/ URBAN CHAOS Life in Mehrauli Medium: INK, WATER COLOUR

Research Paper title: Transformation of urban village Mehrauli: Development or Degradation. Hypothesis: Development in urban village Mehrauli is superficial and cosmetic in nature. This study has attempted to gauge the direction of development and growth of urban village by critically examining the transformation pattern vis-a-vis Changes in Demography and Built environment. Four Zones across Mehrauli have been chosen for precise observations and anaysis. The zones have been selected as they encompass various phenomenon of change and the adaptions to it. The changes in these zones however, are not to the same degree instead, they share the spectrum of chaos that seem to be the ‘ new normal’ in the village. The zones are as follow:
ZONE 1 ‘GAUSHALA’
BASIS OF ANALYSIS: Environmental Urban Quality of Life Political Urban quality of Life Physical Urban quality of life Economic Urban quality of life Psychological Urban quality of life Mobility Urban quality of life ZONE 4 KALKA DAS MARG
Z O N E 1
ZONE 2 BANIYA PARA -Illegal colony, sustained by the ‘gaushala committee’ -Lack of water supply, electricity supply, -poor sanitation conditions. -Expanding nevertheless. Z O N E 2
-Poor sanitation conditions. -Poorly lit apartments springing -Increasing hostility amongst inhabitants -Weak social ties
ZONE 3 ISLAM COLONY
ANALYSIS Growth in mehrauli continues un-abated an un-chequered. With land being a precious resource, NCT of Delhi cannot afford to have over 200 sub-standard, cramped pockets of insanitation that once had plenty of open spaces, farms and fields full of greenery. Growth is an inevitable by-product of human sustenance and therefore it is safe to assume that mehrauli will continue to expand in accordance with the trend of in-migration. CONCLUSION Development ideally, should be synonymous with an upgradation in quality of life of inhabitants at the same time exposing them to various opportunities that exist in their environment, all ready to be tapped. Whereas, in Mehrauli there seem to be unanimous struggle to survive. Survival for the essential components of living; Air, Water Hygienic environment, contentment and sense of fulfilment. It is safe to say, with the current velocity of growth there looms a danger of Delhi transforming into a city where skyscrapers define the skyline aesthetically, and this image will bear no resemblance to the ground realities.

04. URBAN DESIGN, PAHARGANJ The aim of the design excercise was to uplift Paharganj by design interventions that cater to the needs of the existing population and make provisions for future expansion.
THEN AND NOW The porcess involved a detailed study of the existing fabric of Paharganj. A design proposal was formulated to tap the potential of this area to make it a State of the Art centre. It will comprise of residential, commercial, industrial and institutional centres. The segregation of zones within Paharganj ensures order.
The portion alligned to DB Gupta road will have podium towers running along the road. The podium will have commerical spaces facing the street.
The Land use pattern same. Paharganj is divided mainly into 7 functional zones namely, Commercial. Residential, Institutional, Hospitals,Offices & Industrial. A commercial strip runs along Rajgur road while there are podium tower residences along Khanna marg and moving inwards. The central green is planned as
The excercise involved rethinking the entire area of Paharganj and designing to incorporate maximum functions and is achieved by allocating areas for the same. Paharganj is divided mainly into 7 functional zones namely, Commercial. Residential, Institutional, Hospitals,Offices & Industrial.
A chunk of land was frther detailed out in terms of Distribution of functions and Planning. The Imperial Cinema is retained and a cultural plaza is designed surrounding it.
The character of hte new skyline is drastically different
This zone is envisioned to be a cultural hub. The built form lies along two axis driven from integral nodes, ‘6 tuti chowk ‘and ‘Imperial cinema.’
