Asako Yanagita Portfolio 2008-2011
Scent of the four seasons Campaign posters In Japan, people appreciate the beauty of the four seasons in paintings, poems, performing arts, textiles and other visual materials. This brief is a challenge of how to communicate scent through visuals using flowers to represent each season. As a campaign, I created posters and a short animated film for a imaginary brand called ‘Shiki-ka’, which means ‘scent of the four seasons’.

Persona project Illustration & printmaking People wear a ‘Persona’, which is a mask to hide your real feelings when you communicate with others. This artwork represents how we express ourselves in our life, by using the metaphor of a clown.

Harmony publisher Book covers The brief is to set up a publisher and create a series of book covers including a font, with consideration of a women’s role and asking what is equality in gender in society? The font was created through considering what is natural femininity and ‘created’ femininity in society. The inspiration came from classic dollhouses, which show the role of women in a house. The patterns symbolise the titles of the books.
The value of women - Triangles symbolise male and female holding each other. The cost of being equal - Equality sits on money. The roles in the house - Circles and triangles symbolise family and home. The method of measuring talent - Different types of rulers to measure your talent.

No Women, No Peace Award-winning poster My poster design won the No Women No Peace art competition in 2010, and the artwork was presented to the Foreign Secretary William Hague MP at Parliament. The campaign wants to communicate that you cannot build peace while half the population are excluded – balance is always important. My design drew from this idea, representing the importance of everyone’s role, no matter their gender, generation, language, or country.
The Participation Promise “Security Council Resolution 1325 holds out a promise to women across the globe that their rights will be protected and that all barriers to their equal participation and full involvement in the maintenance and promotion of sustainable peace will be removed.” 1

A girl we will never see Silk-screen printing This is a collection of silk-screen printings, and represents how I have forgotten and transformed the image of my sister in my mind, in the 9 years since she passed away. The photograph of this handmade book was taken at the veranda where she used to always sit.
Photographs do not really prompt you to remember people the way you remember them – the way they move, the way they speak, and the way they laugh.
‘No memory is ever alone; it’s at the end of a trail of memories, a dozen trails that each have their own associations.’

How come she could smile like this, even though she knew she was not going to live longer?
