PRESIDENT'S WELCOME Welcome to the second edition of ASA's annual university and careers guide. This publication was compiled by a group of dedicated and hardworking students with the purpose of highlighting the numerous opportunities available to their peers at Macquarie University. At ASA, we understand and have personally experienced the highs and lows of university and the stress of figuring out what is next. Our publication is an extension of our mission to help students navigate the transition from high school to university and to the start of their professional careers. We aim to bridge the gap between professionals and students by bringing you quality content with the much appreciated help of our sponsors and ASA alumni. Whether you are in the first year of your degree or the last, we hope that this guide is able to provide you with some insight into the range of opportunities and resources available while you are at university. Lastly, I want say a massive thank you to all our members, sponsors and alumni for their continual support of ASA and all our endeavours. Following on from a highly successful 2019, where the Accounting Students Association was voted Student Group of the Year, we hope to continue our positive impact on student life and engagement on campus. On behalf of the team at ASA, we can not wait to show you what else we have planned for 2020! Happy reading!

EDITOR'S NOTE While time spent at university is a fond memory and a happy experience for most, university life can also be a huge challenge for students whether they are just starting out or in the last few semesters of their degrees. Every student’s situation is unique, but there are a few problems that almost all university students deal with at least once while completing their degree. More so, university study takes effort, hard work and dedication, but it can be very achievable with plenty of support available. ASA understands that it is daunting for most students and wishes to help relieve some of this stress by releasing a university and career guide full of useful information on how to maximise your time at uni. This publication has been designed by students for students; giving an opportunity to look beyond university with a range of relevant topics such as: Being well rounded; Network Building; How to write a resume; and Possible job opportunities and where to find them. Through the dedication of the ASA team, they have done their best to bring you tips and tricks in all areas covered throughout the publication so that you can make the most of university life. ASA wishes all students the best of luck in completing their degree and/or finding a new job.

WHO, WHAT, WHY ASA? Accounting Students Association Macquarie University (ASA) is a student run society providing a mix of social and professional events to encourage the personal and professional growth of its members.
Who The Accounting Students Association (ASA) is a faculty based student society at Macquarie University. Our objective is to provide social and professional events and workshops that add value to our student members, which will aid them in achieving their personal and professional endeavours. Through partnerships with external organisations, we connect our members with industry professionals and resources that will enhance their knowledge, wisdom and business experience.
What Founded in July of 2010 from a handful of accounting students, we are eager to develop and create a community - with the main focus to provide benefit and opportunities to its student member base.
ASA’s original focus was in providing workshops, seminars and connections with Macquarie University’s accounting department as well as a gateway to professional accounting bodies, institutions and organisations. These opportunities sought to aid its student members in self-development, garner knowledge and a unique skill-set to set them apart from the others and propel themselves forward in prospective career objectives.
Over the years, ASA has slowly developed its professional connections and network to be able to provide hands-on MYOB and Xero workshops, interview preparation and resume workshops, as well as networking sessions and information sessions presented by industry professionals, alumni and professional services institutions and organisations.
Why Overall, ASA opens up a wealth of opportunities for all kinds of students in terms of our event offerings, publications, and sub-committee recruitment. To gain priority access to all of our events and resources, simply sign up at O-Week or on asamacquarie.com and then pay the $5 membership fee at O-week or one of our events.
In addition, ASA offers all students the opportunity to contribute to our work by joining our team of executive and committee members. By joining our subcommittee, students can further their personal development, add to their CV, potentially progress to an executive or committee member role, and make deeper connections with student peers, sponsors, and other stakeholders.
To keep updated on sub-committee recruitment and everything ASA, you can also talk to us in person at these events or ‘like’ our Facebook page.

THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING WELL ROUNDED Are you a well-rounded student? One who is academically prepared but is also active outside the classroom? Your GPA is not the only thing that employers look at when hiring candidates for their positions. They look for individuals that have broader knowledge outside of their curriculum and strong soft skills. This article will give you some ideas of what you can do that will help you become a more well-rounded individual.

Students learning more about career opportunities at an ASA event
INTERVIEW WITH JESSICA LU Secondly, honing communication skills and interpersonal skills throughout my time as Vice President has been crucial to my current graduate role. Within my role, I'm required to communicate directly
Jessica was the Vice President of ASA in 2018/19 and is now a graduate at KPMG. She is excited to share with you how her time at university and experiences with ASA has helped her personal and professional growth. How did your previous work experience and being a part of ASA help you in your current graduate role? Working as an associate at a Big 4 firm hasn't been free of challenges (as I'll touch on later), however, there have been certain challenges that I've been able to take control of and put to rest given my previous work experience, inclusive of serving on the ASA team.
Firstly, serving on the ASA team has provided a plethora of experience of managing and working within teams. Working within a professional services environment, the majority of work is completed within different teams with ever changing team-members respective to the specific engagement. Similarly, within ASA, serving as a Vice President, I was required to work hand-in-hand with executives on the team in assisting the President manage several teams concurrently to meet and adhere to certain task deadlines. The continual and ever-changing nature of working within teams, understanding their roles and responsibilities and further, grasping team strengths and weaknesses, ultimately gained at ASA, has allowed me to seamlessly shift into teamwork in my current role.
with clients, both face-to-face and through online mediums. Liaising with ASA's sponsorship representatives and serving as a core communication touchpoint for members and non-members - through both professional and casual networking events has overall really enhanced my confidence and ability to liaise directly with clients without fear or hesitation. It's a skill that I can say that I've gladly learnt directly from ASA and should I have my time again, I wouldn't hesitate to be part of the team.
What have been some of the challenges and benefits of your current graduate role? Touching on a couple of challenges of my current graduate role, the first one would have to be being thrown into the deep-end from the get-go. From very early on in the graduate role, you're thrown into tasks and responsibilities that really underpin your value to the firm - you won't be questioning your value or worth for sure! However, a great silver-lining for this is that the development opportunities you gain are above and beyond what other firms could offer. Learning firsthand what it takes to succeed within a successful work environment stimulates your personal growth exponentially, and by the end of a few years, you'll definitely be able to identify how far you've grown in such little time.

This is often done by your workplace performance, LinkedIn and your mannerism and elevator pitch when interacting with others. that they can see what value you can bring and what your identity is, as shown through your personal branding.

When and where? Realistically, we are developing networks and conveying a personal brand every single day when we interact with others. Whether it be your neighbour, barista, a fellow university student, lecturer, a family friend, or work colleague, you are continually shaping your reputation in the community when forging relationships with others. As such, you should always be conscious that how you act in- person and online around others can

impact how third parties perceive you and whether they want to include you in their networks.
However, there are particular times and places where we can focus primarily on using our personal brand when networking to create career opportunities for ourselves.
Examples include at: University career fairs and professional development programs, which are usually announced in your student emails; Accreditation body events, such as CA’s Employment Evening; Accounting firm information sessions such as ASA's on campus networking events with major professional services firms, which enables students to network with members of the business and to develop their skills.
Further Resources A key resource in this area is Macquarie University’s CareerWise, which is available online for MQU students. In general, it consists of several modules that explore your career options, looking into your self-development and exploration and career ideas. CareerWise also provides a module on improving skills that will get you ready for work through success boosters, tips on work experience, the advice of employers requirements, and networking. Finally, it helps students take the final steps of achieving a job by providing students with CV/Resume tips, advice on selection criteria, tips on cover letters, provides testing, job interview tips, and knowing your workers’ rights.
For further help from the Career and Employment Service, students may participate in in-person workshops or book an appointment with a careers advisor through Macquarie University’s CareerHub. However, students should note that such assistance is only available upon completion of the CareerWise modules.

Stage 3: Psychometric Testing The main purpose of the online psychometric tests is to assess the abilities of applicants to identify complex patterns, reason logically, compute accounting figures, and solve real-life problems. They usually come in the form of abstract reasoning, verbal reasoning, numerical, and/or even scenario-based questions.
When being thrown a situation, discuss together how you can plan and approach the topic question. This may come in the form of a situational judgment or critical thinking tests. INTERVIEW WITH LINUS POON Linus has recently completed the vacationer program at EY and is looking forward to returning there upon his graduation. His time as the president of ASA in 2018/19 has equipped him with many tips and tricks on how to make the most of your time on campus. How did you decide on what you wanted to do? While interests are an essential part of the process to get started with your degree, I would say that it is paramount to take time to understand and find out what your end goal of university is as soon as you can. Staying busy and productive allows you to get over the “I don’t know what I want to do phase much quicker and defines your path a bit more by understanding what type of work you enjoy and dislike.
How did your time at ASA help you in your future work experience? My time at ASA helped me tremendously in both my professional and personal development. From the outside looking into ASA it can be easy to miss the work that goes into keeping the society running and continually improving it to deliver greater career and social opportunities for MQ students. Being able to hold the professional accountability to meet the expectations of sponsors and taking the time to effectively lead and develop rapport and chemistry with your team is similar to the skills required in the workplace.
ASA gave me an insight into how enjoyable it really is to grow and succeed as a team, which inspired me to strive to be a better leader and team player. For our work during my term as President we were awarded Student Group of the Year for the first time and I found that the professional and social skills that I learnt from my team, my mentors and the work itself was transferrable to my career, helping me to succeed in my Vacation role and earn a Graduate position.
What opportunities do you believe students should take during their study which will help them with their future? I believe that as a uni student, it is essential to be as open minded as possible in order to avoid closing any doors that you may wish to open in the near future. Alongside studies and given my own positive experience with ASA, I would heavily endorse not only joining but holding a position of responsibility such as a leadership role in a student society. This develops confidence and a sense of commitment to your work, your team and yourself which will definitely set you apart and help expand your opportunities. Work experience that affords you skills relevant to your future field of work is also necessary to demonstrate that you can succeed in the role that you want.
What are your tips on landing a graduate role or any working experience? Stock answer perhaps, but I ultimately would say to be genuine. Be genuine about why you want the role, what skills are necessary for the role, then pursue the means to attain it with enthusiasm. A genuinely enthusiastic attitude can only reflect positively on you and others and is an excellent way to show that you are a motivated individual. When we interviewed applicants for ASA roles, my team and I made it clear to value enthusiasm more than experience. We found that the more enthusiastic members actually ended up performing much better and having a greater impact on the society.

accountant in Australia.
Members of CPA have an internationally regarded qualification and can pursue further training for specialisation.
A CA is a Chartered Accountant, CA’s needed to have completed and undergraduate or postgraduate program that can be recognised by CAANZ to partake in a CA course to receive a CA license.
These licenses can offer a competitive advantage for former students that have recently completed their degrees over their peers, in regards to job and career prospects and opportunities.
The main difference between the two accreditations is that Chartered accountants (CA) work more towards auditing whereas CPA’s are mainly used for commercial accounting. Furthermore, a CA accreditation is an internationally recognised qualification which can help open opportunities all over the world. CPA’s are more involved in the operations of a business and how they are run which can broaden your career paths into streams such as management. Since the law expresses that public accountants require a public practice certificate in order to fulfill certain accounting services; both of these certifications can only be obtained by organisations such as CPA Australia or CA ANZ, which has certain entry requirements and objectives that are to be completed/met prior to obtaining either a CPA or a CA license.

Requirements for CA The requirements as explained by CA ANZ are that: You must hold a recognised degree or qualification that has been assessed by CA ANZ as equivalent to at least an Australian or New Zealand Bachelor degree (level 7 or higher) with coverage of required competency areas. Furthermore, Australian based applicants that do not have Citizen or permanent residency must have a visa that enables them to study the program.
In some instances, candidates may have to sit up to 10 foundation exams before being admitted into the CA program. These exams are: Accounting Systems and Processes; Accounting Information Systems; Financial Accounting; Accounting Theory; Management Accounting; Audit & Assurance; Commercial & Corporations Law; Economics & Quantitative Methods; Finance; and Taxation.
The program consists of two parts: 1. Theoretical work with five exams (See CA ANZ online website for the exam structure in detail); and 2. Minimum 36 month Practical studies with any CAANZ or internationally recognised accounting firm/s.
Requirements for CPA Hold a degree or qualification recognised by CPA; Australia/complete a degree or a postgraduate award recognised by CPA Australia; Complete the CPA program - includes 3 years of professional experience; Undertake continuing professional development (CPD) activities every year; and Follow regulations set by CPA Australia.
In certain instances candidates are required to sit up to 6 foundation exams prior to being able to partake in a CPA program (see CPA Australia online website for more information). These exams are: Economics and markets; Foundations of accounting; Fundamentals of business law; Business finance; Financial accounting & reporting; and Management accounting.
The course is separated into two parts: 1. Theoretical experience with 6 professional accounting exams are expected to be completed (see CPA Australia website for more information on the examination material.) 2. Candidates are required to undergo at least 36
Accounting vs Professional Accounting at MQU In light of the new MQU 2020 changes, most, if not all of the degrees, have had changes to their curriculum. Accredited areas of study are necessary in the process to become a professional accountant of the groups above.
The main difference between majoring in accounting and professional accounting, is that the latter is accredited by CPA Australia (CPAA), Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (CAANZ), the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), the Institute of Public Accountants (IPA), and the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA).
However, by studying the correct choice of units whilst majoring in accounting, the degree would be accredited by CPA Australia, Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (CA ANZ) and the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA).

TIPS ON FINDING JOBS FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS International students comprise a significant majority of accounting students at Macquarie University at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Thus, this article aims to study the current opportunities available to international students in terms of careers and professional development.
Current Opportunities Many international students, especially from developing countries have come to Australia in the hope of getting a permanent residency through the two-year Australian study requirement and the poststudy work visa. However, the future seems bleak for them in the area of accounting. Government research has generally revealed that Australia experienced no shortage of accountants in the fiscal year of 2017-2018. This result could mean a tight labour market for international students who wish to embark on an accounting career in Australia. This could be corroborated by the findings that there is an average of 21.6 applicants per vacancy. Of these 21.6 applicants, only 2.4 applicants (11.1%) are suitable for the vacancy. Employers have commonly cited interpersonal skills, communication barriers, and lack of organisational fit as reasons for candidates’ unsuitability. All of this points to how limited the career opportunities are for accounting students at the national level, let alone international students.
At the micro-level, we have conducted research on the career opportunities available in three main circles of industries, namely the top 10 accounting firms, top 10 commercial companies, and 10 fastest-growing smalland medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Australia. 34 | ASA+ 2020
A safe majority of accounting firms are receptive to international students, with firms like PwC and KPMG who consider candidates who meet stringent English Language requirements. A vast majority of Australia’s top companies are also presumably receptive to international students, including Woolworths and NAB. This illustrates that English language proficiency, soft skills, and communication skills are crucial for international students to secure a permanent accounting career in Australia.
The existence of three main accounting bodies in Australia has created a predicament for international students to plan their professional development. While the ACCA gives an advantage for accounting professionals to work in any country around the globe, CA ANZ and CPA Australia are more prestigiously recognised in Australia. However, the current two-year post-study visa gives them limited room to gain the required three-year work experience as required by both CA ANZ and CPA Australia. While CA ANZ is domestically concentrated in Australia and New Zealand, CPA Australia is located mainly around Southeast Asia. As such, international students may have more professional opportunities in pursuing CPA Australia and ACCA with wider support from their regional branch offices.
However, it is also notable that those who complete the

This means that students have the option of pursuing an accounting internship to gain first-hand Australian work experience. This is crucial for their careers as Australian work culture can be a stark difference from their home cultures. Similarly, students also have a wide variety of post-study career options such as pursuing CPA Australia, ACCA or their home country accounting professions.
This is a 2.5-year Master program which is largely similar to the Master of Professional Accounting in CPA or ACCA studies, except that students have a Business Internship option in their final semesters. This means that students have the option of pursuing an accounting internship to gain first-hand Australian work experience. This is crucial for their careers as Australian work culture can be a stark difference from their home cultures. After completing their Masters, students still need to satisfy the three-year Practical Experience requirements to become a full member of CPA Australia or ACCA.
As compared to the pre-2020 academic curriculum, this structure is a more tailor-made one which caters to international students of varying needs.
