WELCOME CATTLE BUYERS! Thank you for your interest in our cattle and this year’s sale. Our goal is to provide quality Simmental and SimAngus bulls that will work for commercial cattlemen and add value to their calves. We also are offering some herd building heifers and bred cows. Since the cattle market has been very good for the past two years, now is the time to invest in quality genetics to stay ahead of the curve. These cattle will offer you calving ease, growth, performance, DNA backed EPDs, and convenience traits such as homozygous black and polled. You will notice that many of the cattle are homozygous black and homozygous polled. We were recognized last year by the American Simmental Association (ASA) for registering calves for 25 consecutive years. You have probably seen some seedstock producers come and go, but we are in it for the long haul. We look forward to each year’s calf crop to see the fruits of our breeding decisions, and strive to make better cattle every year. We were also recognized by ASA as a Performance Advocate. This is achieved by reporting all data on all calves to ASA. In addition, our cow herd is enrolled in Total Herd Enrollment (THE) which means that every cow has a breeding record and data reported. This also provides more data to ASA, thereby adding more data to be incorporated into EPDs. EPDs have become increasingly more reliable as more data records have been added over the years and cattlemen have been more diligent about collecting and reporting the data. This year, we DNA tested all the bulls and yearling heifers. The bulls were tested for genomic enhanced EPDs, coat color and polled status. The heifers were tested for coat color. The genomic enhanced EPDs help you as a buyer because they add more accuracy to the EPDs, equivalent to 8 to 9 calves on the ground. A supplement sheet with ultrasound data on the yearling bulls will be on the website and also available on sale day.The supplement sheet will also be available on sale day. We hope that you will join us at the farm on sale day. But if you are unable to attend, you can bid through Cowbuyer.com or contact us to bid on your behalf. Feel free to call or email with any questions or to discuss the sale offering.

Sale format
– SALE INFORMATION – Sale Day Phones
The sale format will be a silent auction style with internet bidding as an option. All sale lots are listed in the catalog with a minimum starting bid. Early internet bidding through Cowbuyer will begin on November 11. On sale day, silent auction bid sheets will be posted for each animal. The starting bid on the silent auction bid sheets will be either the price listed in the catalog as minimum starting bid if no online bids were received or the most recent online bid for that animal. The silent auction will be from 11:00am – 1:00pm. Buyers will be able to place bids live on the bid sheets or through Cowbuyer. If you prefer, you can call us and place bids over the phone. All bids will be written on the bid sheets. To avoid a rush to cast last minute bids, we will offer buyers a live bid off if someone wants to raise the last bid on the sheet. Animals will be sold to the highest bidder. Should an animal not receive a bid, they will be available anytime after the sale at the minimum starting bid.

The most powerful bull starts the sale. He is an ET calf from the mating of one of the best Simmental bulls and our prolific, no-miss donor cow. He is long sided, deep ribbed and thick quartered. Weaning and yearling EPDs are in the top 10%, milk top 20%, docility top 4%, marbling and ribeye in the top 10%, with API in the top 20% and TI in the top 2%. His phenotype and EPDs demostrate that he will sire growthy and muscular calves, but also produce desirable replacement females with the same qualities, and added milk. Nice disposition to boot. Take note that all yearling bulls have genomic enhanced EPDs which adds more accuracy to them with it being the equivalent of 8-9 progeny data.

YEARLING OPEN HEIFERS Leave ‘em and Breed ‘em Option We are offering buyers of any yearling heifer the option to leave your heifer with us to breed and have her confirmed pregnant and available for delivery or pick up between April 1-15. Heifers will be synchronized and A.I. bred in late November, and then our herd sire will be turned in 12 days after the A.I. date for a breeding season of 75 days. Our herd sire, MSR 2214Z of 6215S SNGLE, is a homozygous black and polled purebred Simmental. The heifers will be vet checked so that you will know if the heifer is safe to the A.I or natural service. Buyer can choose the bull for A.I., but the selection must be from our inventory. The price of this option is $500 and includes all expenses associated with development to a bred heifer ready to place in your herd in the spring. Price does not include delivery. Selection of this option must be made on November 14, 2015. Payment for the heifer as presented in the sale is due at the end of the sale, but payment for the option is not due until you take possession of the heifer. We guarantee the heifer to be pregnant at delivery or pick up, but do not extend the guarantee once you take possession. Should a heifer not conceive, we will offer you a full refund, but will retain the heifer and market appropriately. This is a great option to add value to your purchase. We do encourage you to purchase livestock insurance.

This is the youngest heifer in the sale at only 7 months old but she had a 205 day adjusted weaning weight of 661 lbs. from a first time calving cow with a ratio of 105. She could be real competitive in the late spring heifer classes. Her EPD spread from birth to yearling is a whopping 107 lbs. So she is capable of producing curve bending cattle with low birth and high growth. Her dam was Hayden's show heifer that had a great disposition, and as a cow has a nice udder. This bull is powerful. He has as much muscle as any bull you will see. He had an adjusted 205 day weaning weight of 795 pounds with no creep feed. He ranks high for just about every EPD. Complimenting his powerful growth and muscle is a calving ease and birth weight EPD in the top 5% of the breed. Where else can you find a heifer bull with this much growth potential? You can have calving ease and growth all in one bull, a rare combination. His EPD spread from birth weight to yearling weight is 95 pounds. You would have to sort through a lot of bulls to find one this good with an API and TI in the top 2% of the breed.

C5 is smaller framed, but he has plenty of genetic potential. The Substance calves are deep bodied and have good rib dimension. This bull will work fine on heifers, and is a high value bull with an API of 145 and TI of 79. Just about all of his EPDs are in the top 25% or higher.
Quick Reference to ASA EPDs and $ Indexes Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs): EPDs are the most accurate and effective tool available for comparing genetic levels. In using EPDs, the difference between two sires’ EPDs represents the unit difference expected in the performance of their progeny. For example, if sires A and B have EPDs of +10 and –5, a 15-unit difference would be expected in their progeny (moving from -5 to +10 yields 15 units). Key to using EPDs is knowing what units they are expressed in. For example, if the above case referred to weaning weight EPDs, A would be expected to sire 15-pounds more weaning weight than B. If calving ease were the trait, A would be expected to sire 15-percent more unassisted births in first-calf heifers; in other words, if B sired 30 assists in a group of 100 heifers, we’d expect A to require 15 assists. A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s EPDs rank him relative to other bulls in the breed. For percentile rankings or more detailed information about EPDs and $ indexes visit www.simmental.org. Listed below are the units ASA EPDs are expressed in: All-Purpose Index (API): Dollars per cow exposed under an all-purpose-sire scenario. (See below for more details.) Back Fat (BF): Inches of backfat. Birth Weight (BW): Pounds of birth weight. Calving Ease (CE): Percent of unassisted births when used on heifers. Carcass Weight (CW): Pounds of carcass weight. Maternal Calving Ease (MCE): Percent of unassisted births in first-calving daughters. Milk (MLK): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk. Marbling (MRB): Marbling score. Maternal Weaning Weight (MWW): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk and growth.
Ribeye Area (REA): Square inches of ribeye. Warner-Bratzler Shear Force (WBSF): Pounds of force required to shear a steak. Stayability (STAY): Percent of daughters remaining in the cowherd at 6 years of age. Terminal Index (TI): Dollars per cow exposed under a terminal-sire scenario. (See below for more details.) Weaning Weight (WW): Pounds of weaning weight. Yearling Weight (YW): Pounds of yearling weight. Yield Grade (YG): Yield grade score.
$ Indexes: Though EPDs allow for the comparison of genetic levels for many economically important traits, they only provide a piece of the economic puzzle. That’s where $ indexes come in. Through wellconceived, rigorous mathematical computation, $ indexes blend EPDs and economics to estimate an animal’s overall impact on your bottom line. The same technology that led to the dramatic progress in swine, poultry and dairy genetics over the last several decades was used to develop the following $ indexes: All-Purpose Index (API): Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus first-calf heifers and mature cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield. Terminal Index (TI): Evaluates sire for use on mature Angus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield. Using API and TI: First, determine which index to use; if you’re keeping replacements use API, if not, TI. Then, just as with EPDs, zero in on the unit difference between bulls. (As described above, index units are in dollars per cow exposed.) The difference can be used to determine how much a bull is worth compared to another. Or, put another way, how much you can pay for one bull compared to another. For example, when buying an all-purpose-type sire, you can quickly figure a bull scoring +100 for API is worth an extra $6,000 over a +50 bull if both are exposed to 30 cows over 4 years ($50 diff. x 30 hd. x 4 yr. = $6,000). A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s index value ranks him relative to other bulls in the breed. For percentile rankings or more detailed information about EPDs and $ indexes visit www.simmental.org.
Benefits of Genomically Enhanced EPDs How does DNA testing (GGP-HD or GGP-LD) improve predictions of EPDs? There are thousands of DNA markers associated with genetic potential of the traits we evaluate with EPDs The combination of these SNPs explains (in part) the genetic potential an animal has for a trait. In short, DNA testing provides additional information that is blending with the calculated EPDs resulting in higher accuracy genetic prediction in relatively unproven (low accuracy) animals. Adding DNA information increases the accuracy of the EPDs similar to an average of 8 progeny measurements and the impact on the accuracy depends on the trait (stayability is the highest while back fat is the lowest; see Table 1). How do I best use the information from DNA testing? Thankfully, the information is easy to use. If you know how to use EPDs then you can use GE-EPDs - they work the exact same way. In order to take advantage of the DNA information (LD or HD), you need to use this information in your selection decisions.
