ASAV 2009 Jump-Start Program

Page 1

The President’s corner Jan. 2009 Best wishes for the new year to all the Shagya community. Let us hope that this year has been positive on for you and your horses. We also hope that you have stayed above water in these harsh economic times. 2008 has been an exciting time for ASAV. We have grown at an exceptional pace, expanding to well over 50 PAYING (recurring revenue) members. We will eclipse that number this year. Our National meeting in Kentucky was a great success. We had three days of speakers and clinics. We flew Tamas Rombauer in from Hungary (ISG VP) and Carolyn Tucker from Morgan Hill, California. We had some great talks detailing Shagyas throughout the world and an intimate view by Carolyn into the life of Oman. Additionally, Denis Atam gave an excellent talk about the ISG inspection tour of Venezuela. Late in 2008, we initiated the 2009 Jump Start Breeding Program. Details are given in this special publication. The raison d’etre for the program is two fold: expand the Shagya population in North America and provide funding (defray some costs) for the publication of our stud book. The BOD agreed to register horses of Shagya and Arabian ancestry who have at least 7 Shagya ancestors in the 4th generation of their pedigree as purebred Shagya horses. This is to remain compliant with international breeding guidelines. There is a more detailed explanation in the body of our newsletter and also on our web site. 2009 looks to be an exciting year. We have articles coming out in various horse magazines, we have advertisements already placed in magazines and we have purchased Shagya promotional booths---one at PNER and one at AERC that will be held in Louisville, Ky. The 2009 National Meeting promises to be spectacular. It will take place in Bend, Oregon. The planning of the meeting schedule is currently in progress, but one theme will be endurance.

Kilian Dill President ASAV

We hope To See YOU There!

ASAV PROJECT JUMP START 2009

ASAV Project Jump Start is a program that is offered to ASAV members. It is a promotional plan invigorate the Shagya Arabian breeding program in North America. The promotion will also help to rejuvenate a national Shagya horse breeding program and to create a fund raising campaign to assist in the publishing and printing of the ASAV Studbook in the U.S. The fee being charged is an incredible $200! $100 will go back to the stallion owner and $100 will go to the ASAV Stud Book Publishing/ASAV Shagya Marketing Fund. This ASAV member program is a new and innovative way to strengthen breeders and bring owners together in a positive effort to revitalize and diversify the Shagya Arabian breeding program in North America. This will also be an additional incentive for new and returning 2009 ASAV members. You do not need to own a shagya bred horse to participate! ASAV has a Shagya Sportlo and an Anglo Shagya studbook for registering the offspring. There is a long history of elite sporthorses who’s ancestry can be traced back to warmbloods and angloarabs crossed with Shagya Arabian bloodlines in Europe. Anyone can become an ASAV member to participate in this program. The ASAV encourages mare owners to outcross with our breeder’s fine stallions. Shagya Arabian linage infuses hybrid vigor and enhances refinement to the traditional long standing performance bloodlines used in competition today. ASAV members acknowledges that these are hard times and they wish to extend a discount to make available breedings at a significantly reduced rate. If we, as breeders, wish to take a marketing lesson from the Thoroughbreds, if you breed in 2009 you will have the 2 or 3 year olds to sell when the economy gets back on it’s feet, hopefully, in a couple of years. Breeders that take advantage of this resourceful marketing program will be ahead of the curve, when people start to look for riding age horses of superb nature. With this in mind, many breeders are not going to breed their mares in 2009 and this most likely will create a shortage in the market of young suitable mounts. The ASAV stallions listed are being offered to ASAV mare owners in this promotion at an incredible discounted rate of $200 dollars for the 2009 season. All other expenses incurred with breeding a mare such as AI fees, board, veterinarian fees, collection fees, and collection transportation or shipping fees will be an extra cost to the mare owner. These additional expenses are not included in the $200 special priced stud fee. Please check with each stallion owner for anticipated fees in their area. The ASAV BOD feels this is a great way to raise money and offer the top stallions in the country at a special promotional rate to our members. Truly a superb way to test breed a new bloodline combination! There is an added value in breeding to a starred * stallion standing in Kentucky with the new Kentucky (non-racing) Breeders Incentive Fund. The KyBIF program can generate an income source from the offspring’s competition points for years to come. details and rules for KySAHA will be posted on the ASAV web site in January 2009.

The $200 dollar introduction fee for 2009 Project: Jump Start must be paid to the ASAV before the breeding or deadline May 1st, 2009 to participate with the breeding arrangements booked for later in the year. Members may purchase more then one stallions’ booking for the 2009 breeding season-- limited to the number of stud’s service openings being offered to each stallion The ASAV BOD looks forward to this new innovative fund raising approach which partners with its members for unique advantage and opportunity to jump start the Shagya Arabian in North America. Shagya Stallions enrolled in this program as of January 1, 2009 are listed on the web site and in this Newsletter. Stallions may still be accepted-- please contact Darlene Steven ASAV@bellsouth.net. Pedigrees for the enlisted stallions can be found on the ASAV web site -- www.shagyaregistry.com under “registry” STUD BOOK STIPULATIONS: The ASAV make no expressed warranties, (i.e. live foal guarantee) for these stallions offered. The contract for service is between the mare owner and stallion owner. The ASAV acts only as intermediate in the Jump Start Promotion to the service of these stallions. All fees incurred in breeding mares such as semen shipping, transportation, collection, cultures, veterinarian expenses and other fees will be paid in addition to the stud fee by the mare owner. It is the responsibility of the mare owner to contact that stallion owner for fee schedule and requirements before contracting for the ASAV special rate. The ASAV accepts no liability for the care, custody or control of the mares enrolled or stallions being offered. The breeding contract is exclusively between the mare and stallion owner. Insurance is the responsibility of the horse owners. 2009 Project: Jump Start is available to ASAV paid in full members. ASAV members do not need to own a Shagya Arabian to become a member. Membership is $25 for 2009. This offering is open to any breed of horse that wishes to breed to a Shagya Arabian stallion. Offspring of any breed of horse may enroll, participate and be registered in the appropriate shagya studbook: purebred, sportlo or anglo shagya book if they breed to a shagya stallion. See webpage for studbook descriptions, membership and Jump Start information:

Jump Start Stallions -- 2009 BAYRAM (*Oman x *Biala) Bayram is a very special Shagya Arabian stallion. He passes on the linage of the athletic Shagya and the very trainable personalities to his get. Athough I got him used to wearing a saddle and bridle and was the first one on his back, I did not do his upper level training. Due to the flare up of his broken knee, Elisha has not shown him above beginner novice in eventing. He would not have said no, his work ethic would not have let him. Bayram will bring outsiders to the Shagya Arabian breed though his offspring. He was awarded the Gold Medal at the American Warmblood inspection. He has countless offspring that are winning in endurance and many of them should show excellent results in 2009. Bayram is one of the few approved sons of *OMAN and an excellent choice for many U.S. mares. Bayram cannot speak English although he understands it, he taught me to understand him. He of course is the self appointed caretaker of his herd of mares even though he doesn’t run with them, and he understands that I can sometimes help him do this. One day I was cleaning a stall 100 feet away. SA Keid, gelding, and SA Vega, mare, were in the arena down at the end near him eating some hay in hay bags. As I worked on the other end of the stall aisle, I heard the normal noises as he challenged Keid and talked to Vega, then it changed. It was a trumpet of emergency. I yelled at him, “What in the !@#$? is wrong with you?” Then realized I better go see what’s up. When I turned toward him, he got quiet and when I got to Vega I knew what he had called me down to fix. Vega had gotten her foot caught in the hay bag. He needed me to fix this situation. As I said before, Bayram is a very special stallion!

All of them have wonderful substantial bone, and his pure Shagya traits inherited from his lineage. Yes, he is inbred, but he seems to have inherited all of the positive traits and we have yet to see any negatives. He throws his exceptional swinging gait and his quiet, willing temperament that is without rival. STETSON is an excellent choice for anyone wanting to improve riding characteristics. His foals are tall, 16 h.h. or more and are very pleasing and correct in conformation. STETSON is presently competing in Distance riding and recently won a 30 mile race over the tough Old Dominion trail with his owner Brian Coss. They are training for 2009 and STETSON is showing great enthusiasm for trail work. He is ridden with a bitless bridle and controlled by voice and Brian is thrilled with his progress.
