For 250 years, Royal Copenhagen’s trademark three blue waves have set the benchmark for Danish craftsmanship. The subtle brushstrokes carry the current of contemporary art, from the seminal minds and hands that make Royal Copenhagen an infinite well of creativity.
Since its very first porcelain piece, Royal Copenhagen has been a study in the art
of creating immortal design. As the house celebrates its 250th anniversary this year, the archives aren’t a place of museum pieces of times past. They are alive with present-day design icons that are deeply embedded not only in our daily lives but in Danish cultural history.
Blue Fluted Plain, the very first collection introduced in 1775, is as relevant as ever and
has inspired an ever-evolving panorama of dinnerware and art objects. From its cobalt brushstrokes, hand-painted stories continuously emerge, with newer collections such as Blue Fluted Mega, Blue Elements and Royal Creatures exploring Royal Copenhagen’s legacy.
The three waves, which adorn the bottom of every piece of porcelain produced since the
factory first opened its doors, are an insistence on craft traditions, dinnerware rituals and a desire to bring new art into the world. Their presence represents a celebration of the emotional value we lend to objects through artisanal workmanship and the porcelain works of art that continue to captivate and inspire, still making waves.
250 YEARS SHARING MOMENTS
YEARS OF SHARING YOUR MOMENTS
For 250 years, Royal Copenhagen has joined in framing and elevating the special moments we treasure. Iconic collections have set the scene for those shared moments in time that stay vivid
in our minds – a cup of tea with a grandparent, a milestone celebration, an intimate dinner with close friends. Meaningful moments that shape our lives and the people we share them with.
HIP, HIP, HOORAY
One year older but some things remain the same: laying the table with a timeless classic and setting the scene for a happy moment of shared celebration. Among birthday confections and jewel-like
pastries, Blue Fluted Plain’s stylised flowers and hand-painted lines fluidly converse with both heirloom pieces and new additions.

Steeped in tradition but moving with the times, the ritual of afternoon tea and the pause it offers to reflect and connect is heightened by blue and white icons of design. Airy lace borders pierced by
hand add a graceful poetry to the ornate brushstrokes of each piece of Blue Fluted Full Lace porcelain, freely mixed with Blue Fluted Half Lace for a ceremonial yet informal impression.
ACROSS THE TABLE
A modern design classic takes centre stage in an antipasti setting, infusing a relaxed dinner of sharing platters with Blue Fluted Mega’s graphic and contemporary energy.
Saturated with the historic significance of the hand-painted pattern it magnifies, it underscores a moment of togetherness across generations.
CATCH OF THE DAY
The high glamour of an oyster party makes a moment of shared festive extravagance feel even more special with an elegantly playful backdrop, where centuries-old
porcelain collections are reinterpreted in Blue Elements’ palmettes and HAV’s distinct fish scales and sea mist effect.
CELEBRATING
CRAFT
Craftsmanship and art are intrinsically linked in every piece of porcelain that passes through the hands of Royal Copenhagen’s skilled artists.
From our timeless Pattern No. 1 and the iconic Flora Danica to contemporary HAV, every Royal Copenhagen collection is a display of exquisite craft expressed in its own unique way.
THE F IRST WAVE
Striking an immaculate balance between clean lines and graceful embellishment, our first ever pattern from 1775 is still made exactly like the iconic work of hand-painted art always has been, with hundreds of deft brushstrokes making up a piece of Blue Fluted Plain, from the central stylised flower to the curved palmettes.
DECORATION RULED BY SIMPLICITY: ROYAL COPENHAGEN’S BLUE-PAINTED UNDERGLAZE COLLECTIONS HAVE NAVIGATED CENTURIES OF CULTURAL CHANGE AND REMAIN FOREVER RELEVANT.
From our Pattern No. 1 has sprung a long line of iconic hand-painted collections in blue, rich in details and beauty.
Common for them is the impression they leave of one uninterrupted, effortless cobalt blue line across the pure surface of white porcelain.
FLORA DANICA
BOTANICAL WONDERS
An almost mythical piece of absolute artistry, Flora Danica’s cataloguing of the national botany endures as the world’s most prestigious dinnerware.
ONLY A COUPLE OF DOZENS OF ARTISTS IN THE ENTIRE WORLD MASTER THE SPECIALIST CRAFTSMANSHIP OF MOULDING, PAINTING AND FLOWER MODELLING THAT MAKES UP FLORA DANICA.
Each piece of overglazed fine porcelain depicts one of more than 3,000 copperplate prints of Danish wildflowers from the original edition of the 18th century encyclopedia it is named after.

A painter will use their artistic freedom to portray the botanical specimen of choice, creating magnificent variations in placements and details.
Three-dimensional flowers are made for lids and handles with techniques that have been passed down from master craftsman to apprentice for centuries, and a piece is fired at least eight times to achieve the colourful splendour in nuance that is framed by the intricate openwork and 24-carat gold border.
NEW CURRENTS
Named after the Danish word for sea, HAV bridges past and future with its organic, fluid take on classic porcelain craftsmanship. Breaking with tradition to explore a new artisanal language, HAV was introduced in 2019 as a tightly edited collection of versatile pieces inspired by the Danish coastline.
Made in collaboration with Danish design studio KiBiSi, the design’s clearly formed fish scales create a tactile pattern that brings the porcelain to life, merging ornamentation, aesthetics and functionality to ensure the ideal grip on each object.
The scales are spray-painted by hand using a complex technique that allows the colour to echo the misty Danish seas, slowly changing from the faintest blue to a deep greenish-black accentuated by warm bronze detailing.
VOICES OF PORCELAIN
Ever since the factory first opened its doors in 1775, Royal Copenhagen has worked with the pinnacle of Danish artists, designers and craftsmen to expand the horizons of porcelain, collaborating closely with contemporary names who shape our world with their art. To celebrate their creative impact, we chart some of the people who have energised Royal Copenhagen’s artistic legacy in recent years – and continue to do so.
ALLAN THERKELSEN
Celebrated Danish sculptor Allan Therkelsen has conjured sculptures and figurines for Royal Copenhagen since 1990. With more than 250 collectors’ objects in production from his hand, he is one of the most prolific sculptors in the 250-year history of Royal Copenhagen.
“Everyone who is employed here has the same level of perfectionism and only the most sublime is acceptable.”
IVAN WEISS GAMFRATESI
Renewal and traditional craftsmanship collide in the work of award-winning design studio GamFratesi, made up of Italian architect Enrico Fratesi and Danish architect and designer Stine Gam. The duo launched the whimsical Royal Creatures collection in collaboration with Royal Copenhagen in 2021.
Stine Gam: “When you have a high level of quality in craftsmanship then of course trends can come and go, but what stays is that it will always be relevant.”
Renowned Danish ceramist Ivan Weiss joined Royal Copenhagen at the age of 16 as an overglaze painter apprentice. He has spent six decades with Royal Copenhagen, creating pieces that showcase his fondness for how colours can enhance and illuminate white porcelain.
“For many years I felt that the only place I could find peace and quiet was in my workshop. I would sit there, listen to music and look at my ceramics. The atmosphere of being in the workshop was pure meditation.”
KAREN KJÆLDGÅRD-LARSEN
Playing with traditional concepts has always been at the heart of Karen Kjældgård-Larsen’s work. A leading figure in the art of ceramics, the Danish designer’s idea to zoom in on Royal Copenhagen’s Blue Fluted Plain flower pattern and then amplify it became the modern icon that is Blue Fluted Mega.
“I have always worked with the Blue Fluted Plain pattern so I knew it well and knew that others knew it well too. I think it has an element of iconic value and great diversity. I don’t know what it is. It’s just such a great pattern.”
EMILY WILDER
Marketing director Emily Wilder has been with Royal Copenhagen for ten years. Wilder takes a particular interest in Royal Copenhagen’s cultural heritage and the way the factory continues to develop and influence the future with its craftsmanship, values and artist collaborations.
“Porcelain is a part of Danish design from the point of view that it mirrors our culture, it mirrors sitting around the table and how much that means to how we gather as Danes. It taps into part of their own storytelling. Their culture, their upbringing, their memories. It’s not just a piece of porcelain.”
LOUISE CAMPBELL
Acclaimed Danish designer Louise Campbell is the creator of Royal Copenhagen’s Elements collections. Her playful and modern interpretation of the blue and white floral pattern illustrates how she likes to find the essence of a motif and then explore it further, placing her work in the crossover between art and design.
“Over the past 30 years the world has started to lose touch with craftsmanship, and we are beginning to realise what a catastrophe it would be if we did lose it. Royal Copenhagen is a bearer of some of the highest craftsmanship you can find when it comes to working with porcelain.”
STEEN NOTTELMANN
A veritable walking encyclopedia of porcelain, Royal Copenhagen’s heritage manager Steen Nottelmann has worked with porcelain since the 1970s. He joined the house when it merged with Bing & Grøndahl in 1987 and has curated exhibitions across the world and in-house ever since.
“I don’t think there’s anything wrong with things being a bit formal and that people feel as if they’re buying a part of something they can’t get just around the corner. You feel so rich. But you feel rich as a result of the history of something that actually isn’t your own. That sense of enjoyment is something I hope that people have when they take a cup out of the cupboard.”
Verica Zelcev has worked as a blue-painter for 28 years, putting her skilled brushstrokes to all of the blue and white patterns’ iconic incarnations. The Serbian-born painter also works on special projects and made-toorder artworks.
“When I paint I feel like I am creating a unique piece of work and that is something that makes me proud. I think people are mindful of the fact that it is craftsmanship. No two pieces are the same. That is also what people love –the unique piece of porcelain that we create.”

WHITE FLUTED FULL LACE
The full lace shape was originally created in 1885 by Artistic Director Arnold Krog, but it was not until the 1990s that the beauty of the unadorned full lace shape would come to be truly appreciated with the introduction of White Fluted Full Lace. In 2019, White Fluted Full Lace was reintroduced, adored for its pure elegance.
Available exclusively in Royal Copenhagen's own stores and on royalcopenhagen.com.

WHITE FLUTED HALF LACE
Beautifully unpainted, White Fluted Half Lace allows for the shape to take center stage. The lace border is given full attention, resulting in an expression that is romantic and filled with character. Introduced in 1888 by Artistic Director Arnold Krog.
WHITE FLUTED
White Fluted came to life in 1775 as the base shape of the historic Blue Fluted Plain. Since then, the flutes have become a classic element of Royal Copenhagen porcelain, and on White Fluted they can be enjoyed in their purest form. 1775
