Founding patrons, Sydney and Walda Besthoff, envisioned a place where the public could contemplate masterpieces of modern and contemporary sculpture in a relaxed outdoor setting. Lifelong New Orleanians, the Besthoffs have served as important business and cultural leaders in this city. In addition to sponsoring the Sculpture Garden’s construction and ongoing maintenance, the Besthoffs also donated the vast majority of its sculptures. With works dating from the turn of the twentieth century to recent years, the sculptures demonstrate the wide range of modern and contemporary sculpture. The Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden at the New Orleans Museum of Art is one of the foremost sculpture gardens in the United States. The nearly fiveacre garden opened in 2003 with fifty works of art by modern and contemporary artists of international renown, including Henry Moore, Barbara Hepworth, George Segal, and Louise Bourgeois. Today the Besthoff Sculpture Garden boasts sixty-four works of art showcased in a unique natural setting of meandering footpaths, reflecting lagoons, pedestrian footbridges, and mature live oaks and pines. The garden design was a collaboration between project architect Lee Ledbetter and landscape architect Brian Sawyer.
