A WORD F R O M O UR D IR ECT O R What a difference a year makes. This past year has proven what we all knew; that in times of stress and great anxiety, human nature draws us to the outdoors. As an organization, we overcame many obstacles and contended with many changes to our operations this past year. While we have enjoyed a year of unprecedented growth, we have also questioned what that growth means to our mission and vision. Staff will continue to ask the hard questions to ensure we support the values we hold dear.
“Is it right for the land?” “Will it engage our members and guests in different and meaningful ways?” “Are we doing what is right, even if it means taking the hard way?” As we look to 2021 and beyond, we are grateful for you and your relationship with the Greenway. We know that these relationships look different for everyone and we hope that we can meet you where you are and provide a beneficial recreational experience for you and your family.
JOHN GORDON COO of Leroy Springs & Company, Inc. and Executive Director of the Anne Springs Close Greenway
A WO R D F R O M O U R B OAR D C H AIR At the beginning of 2020, few could have predicted what the year had in store. The global pandemic affected all of us, resulting in many changes and disruptions in all aspects of life. Despite these challenges, the Greenway had many significant accomplishments: • New outdoor education initiatives, known as the Outdoor Academy, helped address the needs of parents and children adapting to virtual education. • In response to continued incidents throughout our nation illustrating longstanding institutional and systemic racism, and acknowledging that it has no place in our community, staff and the Greenway’s Board of Managers formed a Diversity and Inclusion Committee to work towards ensuring the Greenway is truly welcoming to everyone. • The Greenway hosted over 268,000 visitors (with 30,000+ in May alone) and welcomed a record 6,000 new membership households, bringing the yearly total to 14,000+ membership households, equating to over 41,000 individuals. Your support ensures that the excellent work performed by staff will continue and that the Greenway will remain a sanctuary for future generations.
ALEX SULLIVAN Chair, ASCG Board of Managers 3

In Memoriam In 2020 and early 2021, the Anne Springs Close Greenway said goodbye to four individuals who were instrumental in creating a lasting impact on our educational and conservation philosophies since the Greenway’s inception.
Murray White LOCAL CONSERVATIONIST Murray White was a Fort Mill native with a heart for service in the town and county he held dear. He was a York County councilman for 14 years and helped create the Foundation for Fort Mill Schools, which provides scholarships for students and grants for teachers. After a career as president of the Insurance Agency division of The Springs Company, Murray was best known as founder of the Nation Ford Land Trust, which holds the Greenway’s conservation easement and protects almost 14,000 acres of land, mostly in York County. His passion for conservation and preservation of the land led him to be a founding member of the York County Forever Commission and chair of the Catawba River Task Force, which developed a plan to protect the free-flowing section of the Catawba River in York, Chester and Lancaster counties. The land trust recently honored him by naming a 158-acre preserve after him. Murray White was a visionary for the future, inspiration to all that knew him, and a selfless servant.
Jim Little ORGANIZATIONAL LEADER Known as a dedicated and loyal leader, Jim Little joined Leroy Springs & Company in 1962 as Office Manager for the LSC corporate office, retiring in 1998 as Vice President. During his 35 years of service, no one was more involved in a greater variety of tasks and challenges than Jim Little. Jim went on to report to one of LSC’s first presidents, Bob Reid, who once said that “Jim was involved with everything good that Leroy Springs has ever done.” Jim was soft spoken and a bit of an unsung hero, working Often behind the camera, Jim Little was instrumental in construction behind the scenes for many years supporting several LSC projects at Springmaid Mountain in Presidents during his tenure. He was one of the first graduates of the late 1980s (pictured). North Carolina State’s recreation program and his work helped to re-envision recreation as more than just athletics. Jim’s commitment to Leroy Springs & Company was unmatched and we honor his memory in the work we do each day. 4
Dottie Metzler GREENWAY EDUCATOR
Billy Barron & Dottie Metzler, pioneers of Greenway education.
Billy Barron GREENWAY RANGER Locals loved him and even those of us who came to the Greenway after him reveled in stories about the Greenway’s first employee hired in 1992 - a ranger, a host, a pioneer of the vision that Anne Close set forth. Having grown up nearby, Billy knew every inch of the Greenway and was responsible for many of its best assets. He conducted countless hours of research to compile a database of native flora and fauna that eventually extended to include mammals, fish, reptiles and amphibians; he hosted some of the Greenway’s first educational activities as the Nature Center host; and he welcomed visitors and state agencies alike to the Greenway for well over a decade. He was instrumental in recognizing the historical importance of the old gristmill site and having a representation built there to mark its place. Billy’s vision was to always “enlighten [visitors] and enhance their enjoyment of the Greenway out-ofdoors”. Billy’s Walk, the path from Haigler Loop to the bottom of the Lake Haigler Spillway, is a fitting tribute to his work.
Dottie first visited the Greenway on Earth Day 1995, the day the Greenway opened to the public. It wasn’t long before she set to work developing the Greenway’s first environmental programs for Fort Mill school teachers to use for outdoor learning. Through her part-time role in the Greenway’s Education department lasting almost 20 years, Dottie reached scores of teachers and hundreds of children while single handedly establishing the Greenway’s foundation in environmental education. Dottie worked closely with Billy Barron to identify wildflowers, trees and animals throughout the property, and she helped coordinate the construction of the Greenway’s gristmill and created its interpretive materials. In 2019, the Greenway named the Dottie Metzler Piedmont Prairie in her honor.
“With all her experience and enthusiasm, I always said that Dottie fell out of heaven and into our laps.” ANNE SPRINGS CLOSE

IMPACT OF PANDEMIC
OUTDOOR ACADEMY
LEROY SPRINGS & CO. BRIDGE PROGRAM
2020 was the year of the member. While nearly every aspect of Greenway operations and programming felt the effects of the pandemic, membership numbers soared as people looked for new ways to get outdoors. Membership at the Greenway has grown steadily since 2012, but in the past year, surged past the 10,000-member milestone to a record 14,000 memberhouseholds, resulting in more people than ever who now have access to the Greenway’s 2,100 acres of forests, lakes, streams and pastures. The resounding outcome of this unexpected year has been a renewed appreciation for the land itself; a collective recognition within our community of this regional gift bestowed upon us, and how lucky we are to live nearby and enjoy its splendor.
When schools abruptly closed, so, too, did the Greenway’s educational programming. Within days, our staff pivoted to create virtual, flexible educational options for all ages and group sizes. The new Greenway Outdoor Academy included a Discovery School for middle school students on the A/B schedule. Outdoor Explorers Club met the social, emotional and physical gaps children were experiencing and offered an afternoon of outdoor adventure. Outdoor Experiential Learning paired hiking, kayaking and mountain biking with educational elements, including history and ecology. The year brought renewed focus on the Greenway’s nature-based preschool, as families sought opportunities for even our youngest community members to develop an appreciation for nature.
The LSC Bridge Program provides financial assistance within our community to offset membership and program costs. Last year, the program granted over $86,000 in financial assistance to 218 area families and individuals. The amount distributed last year declined compared to 2019, largely due to program cancellations and participation decreases caused by the pandemic. From 2019-2020, the Bridge Program provided $271,000 in financial assistance, enriching the lives of our youth and contributing to the community that we are proud to call home. Partnerships with underserved communities within Fort Mill created opportunities to reach people where they are, bringing the Greenway into the communities we hope to engage more in our future programming.
2020 DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION
GIVING TO THE GREENWAY
In response to national demand to resolutely address unconscious bias and institutional and systemic racism, Greenway staff and the Board of Managers formed a Diversity & Inclusion Committee to work toward ensuring the Greenway is truly welcoming to everyone, and to recommend specific steps we can take in board recruitment and hiring practices to increase diversity in leadership across the company.
We launched an emergency response Action Fund to pave the way forward as our organization worked toward recovery from the pandemic. We received an outpouring of extraordinary support, raising more than $33,000 in just a few short weeks to support operations.
Greenway staff also developed a ‘zero tolerance’ policy against racism and discrimination of any kind, worked to promote the LSC Bridge Program to provide financial assistance to those in need, and instituted initiatives to promote a more diverse membership, visitor, partnership and employee base.
The $25 for 25 Years campaign set off an important milestone anniversary for the Anne Springs Close Greenway, which was dedicated to the public on Earth Day 1995. We challenged each member to donate just $25, raising more than $70,000 in support of ongoing operations and to offset the annual financial deficit of nearly $800,000. We continue to challenge our community to join us in celebrating this landmark moment by making a gift to wrap up our 25th anniversary year.
MAJOR MILESTONES
(L-R: Bruce Brumfield, CEO Founders Federal Credit Union, Anne Close and Ell Close)
In September, recognizing a $5MM commitment and longstanding partnership with Founders Federal Credit Union, the Greenway renamed the Founders Dairy Barn in their honor. We also announced another name change at the epicenter for children’s programming and summer camps, now known as the Hampton Wildlife Fund Adventure Center, representing a $300,000 commitment from the Hampton Wildlife Fund, whose mission is to promote the education, research, management and administration of wildlife in South Carolina. The financial commitment from both organizations helped to support the Greenway’s ongoing operations and endowment fund, which offsets the Greenway’s annual financial loss and provides funding for the LSC Bridge Program.

Our Operations in 2020
Walkers, runners, mountain bikers, horseback riders, summer campers – the Greenway serves people who know that fresh air and fitness add to the enjoyment of life. Now more than ever, we appreciate the Greenway and its natural splendor - 36 miles of trails and beautiful lakes, rolling pastoral landscape and native prairie habitat, sounds of migratory birds flying over and rushing water in Steele Creek. As programming returns, our vision remains true that all users, from those who are brand new to our veteran members, can enjoy all that the Greenway has to offer.

Our Plans for 2021 At the start of our 25th anniversary year, we announced plans to develop and launch a fiveyear, multi-programmatic fundraising campaign to complement our next strategic plan and underwrite operations, while also supporting a fresh portfolio of new programs and events. T HE M IL EPOS T C A M PA I GN will pave the way for the next phase of the Anne Springs Close Greenway, creating exciting new opportunities to engage members of our community and guests with the outdoors. 2020 presented us with a challenging landscape, but with the support of our members, donors and community partners, we were able to overcome the challenges and reimagine our future.
To become a thought leader in conservation, nature-based education and outdoor recreation. To serve the community as a treasured gathering place. To invite and introduce the wonders of the outdoors to all, embracing and celebrating diversity. As memberships and visitor numbers on the Greenway grow, we strive to better serve our community. We have challenged ourselves to think about how to evolve our programming:
ensuring
the prolonged care for our natural resources and the proliferation of the plants and wildlife that call the Greenway home;
prioritizing our duty to advocate for and promote equity and inclusion in all that we do;
imagining new amenities and updates to our existing facilities and programs to support the incorporation of natural play and natural learning for our visitors of all ages and abilities. With your support, our future is brighter than ever. Thank you for entrusting the Anne Springs Close Greenway to steward your generous donations. Together, we will instill a love and passion for the outdoors and ensure that future generations can Get Close to Nature.

Financial Summary UN AUD ITED (in $000) The Anne Springs Close Greenway saw member and donor households grow from nearly 8,000 in 2019 to roughly 14,500 during 2020. Typically, memberships combined with corporate and foundational partners and event and program participants would contribute to the success of the Greenway. In a pandemic year, the strategy changed to address the immediate needs of our operations while pivoting to maximize donations and gifts. The Anne Springs Close Greenway operates at a deficit each year. Distributions from the Greenway’s endowment help to offset the gap, but only in part. When members and donors grow with us, and increase their support by making additional donations over and above their annual memberships, they ensure our work can continue.
