Representative procedure for ultrasound assisted indium-mediated reactions. Synthesis of 1-(3-chlorophenyl)butanone (3fa; Table 2, entry 1)
General procedure: In a flame dried Schlenk tube (fitted with a Teflon plug valve) 1.2 mmol (0.127 g) of No.15 butanoyl chloride (2a) was added to a stirred mixture of 1.0 mmol (0.402 g) of No.16 tributyl(3-chlorophenyl)stannane (1f) and No.17 indium powder (0.148 g, 1.0 mmol) under a nitrogen gas stream. After purging the system with nitrogen by means of three pump-fill cycles, the tube was capped and immersed in a water–detergent bath at 60 °C. The ultrasonic titanium horn was placed into the bath to a distance of 10 mm to the wall and 5 mm from the bottom of the Schlenk tube and ultrasound was applied in a pulsed mode (duty cycle = 70percent; output power = 70percent) for 10 min. After addition of 10percent (m/v) solution of No.18 NaOH (2 mL) and 10 μL of No.19 tetradecane (internal standard), the mixture was stirred at room temperature for 15 min and then diluted with DCM (5 mL). Once the stirring was stopped for about 5 min, the supernatant liquid mixture was decanted into a separatory funnel. The silvery-white solid, settled at the bottom of the Schlenk tube, was washed with acetone (2 × 5 mL), deionized water (2 × 5 mL), and then vacuum-dried at room temperature. As indicated by DSC analysis, the dried sample (0.133 g) meant a 90percent recovered yield of pure No.20 indium. On the other hand, the organic phase was successively washed with water and brine, dried over Na2SO4, filtered, analyzed by GC, and then concentrated in vacuo. Purification by column chromatography on silica gel (60 Å, 70–230 mesh) doped with 10percent of KF (hexanes/DCM 8:2) gave 0.096 g (53percent) of 3fa as a colorless oil.

EXAMPLE 7 Tin Chloride Reduction The Tbags were placed in 2 L bottles (100 bags per 2L bottle). A 2 M solution of tin chloride dihydrate in DMF was prepared and added to the reaction bottles (1L per bottle) containing the T-bags. The reactions were shaken overnight for 24 hours. The Tbags were washed with DMF (6*, 500 mL), MeOH (3*, 500 mL), DMF (3*, 500 mL), 5percent DIEA/DCM (333, 500 mL), DCM (3*, 500 mL), and MeOH (3*, 500 mL). The Tbags were air dried overnight.

14. Representative Example of a Preparative Stille Coupling: A sealed tube under nitrogen was charged with tin reactant 1a (2.97 g, 2.40 mmol), 1-bromo-4-nitrobenzene (404 mg, 2.00 mmol), lithium chloride (254 mg, 6.00 mmol), dichlorobis(triphenylphosphine)palladium(II) (28.1 mg, 0.04 mmol), dry DMF (5 mL), and dry THF (5 mL). The mixture was heated to 80° C. and a homogeneous solution resulted. The mixture was stirred at 80° C. for 22 h. After azeotropic evaporation with toluene at 75° C. (to remove THF and some of the DMF), the resulting residue was partitioned between water (40 mL), dichloromethane (60 mL), and FC-72 (40 mL). The three phases were separated. Evaporation of the FC-72 phase provided 2.31 g (80.6percent from 1a) of tin chloride 8 as a colorless oil. The dichloromethane phase was washed three more times with water (40 mL) and FC-72 (40 mL). Evaporation of the combined FC-72 phases (including the first phase) provided 2.85 g (99.4percent from 1a) of tin chloride 8.

Preparation of BuSnCl3from Bu4Sn and SnCl4.
Preparation of BuSnCl3from Bu4Sn and SnCl4. In this typical procedure, SnCl4(11.15 g, 0.043 mol) was dissolved in toluene (10 mL). Next, Bu4Sn (4.96 g, 0.0143 mol) was added and reaction mixture was stirred for 2 h at 110°C. After cooling of the reaction mixture to room temperature, the catalyst PtCl2(PPh3)2(3.8 mg, 4.8 μmol) was added and the reaction mixture was stirred for another 12 h at 110°C. Filtration of the reaction mixture gave a slightly yellow solution which was analyzed by 119Sn NMR using SnMe4as external standard. After evaporation of volatiles invacuo, vacuum distillation (90°C/11 mmHg) afforded 13.5 g (83percent) of butyltin trichloride as a colorless liquid. The solid material obtained from the filtrationwas washed twice with toluene (5 mL) and dried in vacuoto give 0.40 g of an off-white solid. The solid was dissolved in acetone-d6and indentified as SnCl2by 119Sn NMR (δ = -235.1).
Elemental analysis: Cl, 36.92percent; Sn, 62.40percent. SnCl2requires: Cl, 37.40percent; Sn, 62.60percent. The results of the different experiments are presented in Table 2.x

6:Materials and Instrumentation
EXAMPLE 6 Materials and Instrumentation 1 H NMR spectra were taken on either a Varian XL-200 or XL-400 spectrometer. 13 C NMR spectra were taken on a Varian XL-400 spectrometer. IR spectra were taken on either a Perkin-Elmer 299B or a Mattson Polaris FT-IR spectrophotometer. Mass spectra were taken on either a Finnigan 3300 or an AEI MS-902 mass spectrometer. Hydrogenations were carried out on a Series 3910 Parr Hydrogenator. Trimethylsilyl cyanide (98percent), boron trifluoride etherate (purified and redistilled), and tin (IV) chloride (anhydrous, 99percent) were obtained from Aldrich Chemical Company. Methylthiotrimethylsilane (approximately 95percent) was obtained from Fluka. Silica gel (approximately 40 μm average particle diameter) was obtained from J. T. Baker Chemical Company. A reaction run under dry conditions signifies a reaction run in flame- or oven-dried glassware and under an argon or nitrogen atmosphere.
