A message from ASDC Board President, Malibu Barron Greetings! I am thrilled to welcome you to the American Society for Deaf Children 2022 Conference. It’s an exciting time for current and future generations of deaf and hard-ofhearing children as we continue our mission to empower our diverse families with deaf children and youth by embracing full access to language-rich environments through mentoring, advocacy, resources, and collaborative networks. Over the next few days, we look forward to connecting with you and the community by providing full language and communication access through fun activities and engaging speakers. We believe this conference will provide space for open dialogue and sharing of tools and perspectives, to connect, and to revitalize the energy of our families. My children (Jack - Deaf Autistic, 9 and Avanti - Hard of Hearing, 5) and I are excited to meet and learn with you as we continue to work towards making a difference in the lives of deaf and hard-of-hearing children and youth everywhere. A message from ASDC Executive Director, Cheri Dowling Welcome to Anaheim and the 2022 ASDC Family Conference! This annual event is an amazing opportunity for families and professionals from across the country to come together to learn from and connect with each other. We’re especially excited to be able to meet in person again after a long two years apart. Since 1967, ASDC has been supporting parents of children who are deaf and hard of hearing. We believe that deafness is not a disability, but language deprivation is. That’s why it’s our mission to ensure that every deaf child can learn sign language from the very start. As parents, we have an obligation to be the voice for our children. We must continue to drive the national dialogue, not only about fair and equal access to language development in all areas of life from school, to play, to the community, but also to create opportunities for our children to meet other deaf children and members of the deaf community from a variety of backgrounds, experiences, and philosophies. As we celebrate 55 years of progress, we need to continue to impact not only the lives of our families, children, and youth but also the lives of millions of children across the country. We must continue to find all the ways to make education accessible as well as to advocate for the benefits of early language, including sign language, and work to ensure that deaf children’s language development, whether signed, spoken, or both, progresses at a rate equivalent to that of their hearing peers. The theme for this year’s conference is “Take the Sign-Seeing Route”. We’ve designed a fully immersive conference that provides communication and language access for all. Our activities, presentations, and time together will provide us with additional tools and resources that will not only enhance our parenting and communication skills but provide family experiences that are fun, engaging, empowering, and fully supported by interpreters in the community. We’re excited to take the sign-seeing route with you! As you participate in the conference sessions and activities, please share your thoughts with us! As we look ahead to the next 55 years, it is your input and feedback that help drive the mission, resources, and support you need in your day-today lives. It is truly an honor for me to serve as your executive director. Thank you for trusting me with the mission and vision of the American Society for Deaf Children. I look forward to meeting you and sign-seeing with you this weekend! Cheri Dowling Executive Director

Session Description: Social communication development, pragmatic skills, play checklists, and assessments are frequently incorporated into the early years and school years of children who are deaf/hard of hearing. While these tools are valuable, the simple gift of play in everyday life may get lost in the process. Families benefit from everyday play and its positive impact on language, relationships, developmental skills, and independence. This presentation will provide examples of memorable activities that brought laughter and joy while being influential in the positive growth of Deaf/HH adults. Keynote Address: Keeping Families TOGETHER: Protecting Ourselves from the Unexpected 10:15 - 11:45 AM Presented by: Dr. Jamie Wilson, Ph.D. , ABN, ABPP | Roy Holcomb Distinguished Lecturer
Dr. Jamie Wilson
Session Description: In this day and age, families face an onslaught of issues coming at them from every direction. There's no question that the past three years alone have wreaked havoc on our psychological and physical health. Depression in the overall population has doubled, smoking has increased for the first time in two decades, and alcoholrelated deaths and other substance abuse have increased by at least 31%. The list goes on. We will discuss ways to face the onslaught of life and other issues that can seemingly pop up out of nowhere. After all, keeping our families TOGETHER is key to happiness and optimum mental and physical health!

Courageous Parenting: Making Time for Self Care 8:30 - 10:00 AM Presented by: Malibu Barron | ASDC Board President, Trainer / Consultant / HR + OMBUDS / Facilitator
Malibu Barron
Session Description: This session will be an opportunity to learn more about embedding the value of self daily parenting. Becoming an adult, we were taught to be responsible, manage daily and future plans, and master our tools as a parent. Then, with time, stress, and trauma... we often forget ourselves leading to a circle of burnout and chronic fatigue when trying to get everything together. During the session, in a group, we will practice courageous parenting in which you will be able to identify different ways to have fun as a parent/guardian by using self regulation through breathing, addressing your own areas of needs, and incorporating fun in raising your child(ren).

In ASL and English, we often create new signs or words by deriving nouns from verbs. Words and signs are created when two words that are already in use are put together, creating new signs, and new words! This is called compounding. Hilary Ainbender will walk us through compound verbs in ASL, and how you can use them effectively in your conversations. Great for ALL skill levels!
