When Toyah Willcox left the jungle in 2003 having appeared on series two of ITV1′s I’m A Celebrity – Get Me Out Of Here!, record company interest in her back catalogue hit an all-time high. A number of hits compilations had surfaced in the late 1990s, all centred around Toyah’s material released on Safari Records in the late 70s and early 80s. In 2005, two collections of material from the same period became the first in a long line of retrospectives and reissues. The Safari Records Singles Collections (parts I and II) collected all of Toyah’s Safari singles and b-sides for the first time ever. This kick-started a quality reissues program that would see the re-release of almost all of Toyah’s 80s and 90s material, including many unreleased recordings and tracks making their first appearance on CD. In 2007, Toyah made a major return to music with the release of her first ever digital single, Latex Messiah (Viva La Rebel In You), hitting the top 5 on the iTunes Rock Chart and paving the way for a longterm return to the studio. An album, In The Court Of The Crimson Queen, followed in 2008 – her first full LP in 14 years. Since then, Toyah has released an additional two albums with her band, The Humans, and has made eight viral music videos for solo and Humans digital singles. In 2011, she collaborated with dance music producer, Paul Masterson (Yomanda), on the single, Fallen, reaching number 15 on the iTunes Electronic Chart. Toyah continues to support her rekindled recording career, performing around 30 concerts a year including two ‘firsts’ in 2011, as she embarked upon the From Sheep Farming To Anthem Tour – “my first ever tour with full Toyah hair and make-up and costume changes” and her first ever gigs in the US, performing with The Humans to promote their 2nd album, Sugar Rush. AS Design North East has been responsible for the design of all new Toyah and The Humans releases since Latex Messiah and the majority of reissues and retrospectives since 2005, in addition to the design and maintenance of The Official Toyah Willcox Website and support for all touring and other musicrelated promotion. 5

MAYHEM 2005

No artist with an extensive back catalogue should be without a quality reissues series. We’ve worked on almost all of Toyah’s original 80s and 90s releases updated and reissued since 2005. Pictured: four Toyah album sleeves in their original and revised versions. Above, Mayhem (1985) was initially released without Toyah’s consent after she parted company with Safari Records, who put together the sleeve for this rarities compilation using photocopied promotional photographs. The 2005 reissue reconstructs the sleeve using clean versions of the same images. Facing page, Toyah! Toyah! Toyah! (1985) originally featured a crop of a triptych painting and single “Toyah!” logo. The 2006 reissue uses a fuller version of the painting with the full title of the release shown for the first time as “Toyah! Toyah! Toyah!”. Dreamchild (1994) orignally featured an image of Toyah with her eyes closed. For the 2010 version, we wanted to show her eyes open, so an alternative reconstruction was created. Take The Leap! (1994) was initially only released in Japan and features Toyah floating in a lake with the band who accompany her on the album. As the record is considered a solo project, the UK release (2006) removes the band from the sleeve leaving Toyah solo in the water.

7

The first full-length Toyah studio album in 13 years, released September 2008, is probably one of the most significant releases of Toyah’s career. The album was released both digitally and as a hard copy CD and later issued in Japan, making it our first truly international release. The album was re-printed in 2013 with a bonus track added and a revised sleeve and boolet design. Pictured: Top row, UK and Japanese CD releases. Rows 2-3, Inside sleeve elements and CD from the original release. Bottom row, two promotional posters used as competition prizes and the 2013 re-print version.

IN THE COURT OF THE

CRIMSON QUEEN

megabus.com was launched by the Stagecoach Group in 2003. Its colourful brand and price point “from £1″ have made it a distinctive feature on Britain’s roads, popular particularly among students. In the four years that followed the launch, megabus.com concentrated on developing its budget bus network throughout the UK and into the US and Canada. It also introduced a rail division, megatrain.com, in 2005. AS Design North East became involved with the megabus brand in 2007 when we were approached to design a “London to Glasgow, Edinburgh, Newcastle, Manchester and Sheffield” 4-sheet poster for London Underground stations, based on the existing megabus brand – the simple “megabus.com” logo and strapline plus the megabus mascot, known as Sid. Since then, we have helped to develop the megabus brand, shaping it into a consistent and instantly recognisable brand with a strong emphasis on its illustrated character. Over the past few years, we have played a key role in some of the brand’s biggest milestones, including the launch of bus-to-train division, megabusplus.com, in 2009. We developed creative concepts in 2011 to help launch the introduction of services to Ireland via Irish Ferries and a Glasgow-to-London sleeper service named an innovation in British bus travel by the BBC news. And then in 2012, we became involved in the launch of the first ever megabus.com international services into Paris, Amsterdam and Brussels.

Re-branding a leading business...

14

Spark Response is one of the UK’s most respected providers of customer contact centre and eCommerce order fulfilment services. Our work for Spark has formed part of an overhaul of its marketing and brand positioning strategies. Prior to 2007, Spark had been traditionally a sales-focused business with little time dedicated to marketing, PR and brand management. Brand communications had taken many different forms, since the inception of the business in 1999, due to the use of a number of disparate advertising and marketing agencies, all tending to play heavily upon the company’s signature shades of blue from its logo and using just a handful of internal photographs. The brand lacked interest and notability. As part of a mini re-brand that year, we enlisted the support of Newcastle-based photographer Saša Savić and started building what would become a library of over 1,000 vibrant and professional images of Spark’s employees that would form the basis of all internal and external marketing communications going forward. We introduced new typefaces and gold detailing into the brand, removing the previously over-used shades of blue, allowing the established corporate logo to become a stand-out feature of marketing and advertising materials. Today, Spark is a leading brand in its field and has an established creative approach to all marketing communications, with the distinctive photography, gold detailing and corporate logo elements all playing their own role in making the company stand tall creatively above its competitors.

The Business Class Of Bus Travel

Citylink Gold was the first major brand to be created by AS Design North East. The brainchild of Stagecoach Group founder, Brian Souter, the service was launched in July 2010 with the aim of giving commuters “more than a journey”. We set out to come up with something that had the style and creativity of the group’s East Midlands Trains brand, whilst maintaining the friendly and customer-focused approach of its local bus divisions. With the vision of ‘the business class of bus travel’ in mind, a series of illustrations were created and the scene was set for the new ‘gold’ brand. As part of the launch, we designed, sourced and supplied a range of promotional items including an onboard press and welcome pack, branded cups, napkins and fresh-wipes, along with a suite of posters and flyers and the main citylinkgold.co.uk website. The service celebrated its first birthday in July 2011 with demand having exceeded expectation so much that additional journeys were added to its timetable in October. 16

THE SPIRIT OF NATURAL FASHION In 2012, we worked closely with the in-house buying and catalogue production team at Spark Etail, brandowners of eCommerce retailers including Ethical Superstore, Natural Collection and Spirit of Nature. We created Spark Etail’s first fashion-focused catalogues for the Natural Collection brand and the first Spirit of Nature catalogue since it was acquired by the company. The spring/summer catalogues both follow an editorial style with less focus on product-heavy spreads than previous catalogues. Many of the spreads in the catalogues feature just one or two garments or ranges, with accessories and jewellery to match. Both catalogues feature a home and garden section, with Natural Collection also including menswear, whilst the new-mum-aimed Spirit of Nature includes childrenswear, nappies and baby products, beauty and domestic cleaning.

W MAGAZINE

LIFESTYLE | LIVING | BUSINESS W Magazine was launched in 2011 as a vehicle to promote Teesside’s Wynyard Park, who teamed up with PR agency, Velvet Communications, to create a magazine that would appeal to both business and residential tenants. The luxury magazine embodies the park’s aim of becoming a location synonymous with Living, Lifestyle and Business. The 90-plus page publication is issued quarterly to all tenants within Wynyard and is available in receptions, hotels, airports and train stations, hair and beauty salons and civic buildings throughout the North East. We have been involved in the design and art direction of the magazine since its conception. The design and editorial aims to position W as an aspirational magazine that sits somewhere between a quality North East business publication and a glossy living & lifestyle title – both for him and for her.

NSK WELCOMES STAFF CHILDREN TO ANNUAL PARTY

C

hristmas is just a few weeks away, and to mark the start of the festive countdown, NSK welcomed local children to its annual Christmas party.

Red Alert uses communication boards to record problems and at what stage in the process they are at.

Dozens of staff members brought along their families to enjoy a day of a fun, which included a visit from Santa Claus who brought presents, games and refreshments.

Each time one of the plant’s production lines experiences a problem, the operator running the line makes a note on the relevant board and alerts his Group Leader, who then makes sure the relevant support function fixes it before the next shift begins. Once resolved a tick is put against it.

Steve Metcalfe, HR Manager, said: “It was wonderful to see so many children at the party. Fun was had by all and it certainly got everyone in the mood for Christmas. This time of year is all about the children and they certainly enjoyed themselves, and for NSK it’s great that we can reward our staff and their families.”

Paul added: “By introducing the Red Alert system, the operators have a

clear way of reporting issues and the whole process has become more transparent, which I am sure will lead to all production lines running more productively.”

ESSAGE FROM STEVE METCALFE Starting in 2013, there will be three newsletters per year and in each there will be a mix of corporate business and human interest news. We see this as your newsletter and we want you to be involved. So if you have something you think should be included please don’t hesitate to contact either myself or Leanne. Director’s Note... Plant Director Keith Brain looks back at the highs and lows of 2012.

REGIONAL GROWTH FUND BOOST FOR NSK Deputy Prime Minister confirms company’s bid to be supported by £22.5m capital investment.

N

SK Peterlee has been awarded £3.5m from the Government’s flagship support programme, the Regional Growth Fund.

Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg confirmed the company’s bid, which will be supported with a further £22.5m of capital investment. NSK has been successful along with 24 other projects in the North East, bringing a combined £120m worth of investment into the region. The money will be used to support a number of projects including: • Increasing Hub 3 lines, widening NSK’s growing customer portfolio.

• New heat treatment furnace, which will increase capacity and assist the planned maintenance of other furnaces. • Expansion of the MCB line, enabling more bearings to be manufactured on site. • Upgrading our warehousing facilities, so all warehousing sits in one place and reduces costs and improves supply to production. • Establishing a training centre, resourced by a dedicated Learning and Development team, to support trainees, apprentices and production associates and progress our Succession Planning agenda.

Plant Director Keith Brain said: “We are delighted that our investment proposals have been supported by the Government, which has secured this growth for the North East region.

“This is excellent news for everyone that works at Peterlee. The Management team now is focused on making these investment projects a reality. As internal approval of the above projects is finalised, we will update everyone on the details of the plans.” The investment, which will be delivered over the next 24 months, has the potential to create around 45 new jobs, adding to the 400-strong workforce already in place.

Stagecoach North East

AS Design has worked extensively with Stagecoach North East since entering into partnership in 2007. Try It On The Bus is just one of the many campaigns, products and services we have worked on. This marketing initiative aimed to encourage commuters to ditch their cars and turn to public transport. The conceptual campaign provides a visual idea of the kind of thing the commuter could be doing if they took the bus to work… learn a language, write a novel, do their hair and make-up, play the stock markets, meditate, sleep and even crack Rubik’s Cube! We commissioned a series of vibrant and colourful photographs that would complement the Stagecoach brand and portray the campaign’s key messages in a playful and slightly over-the-top way. The project featured 6 sheet and 48 sheet billboards, a series of press ads, bus-side ad boards and a micro-site to promote the campaign and accompanying competition. 24

Localising An International Brand

26

AS Design was approached by East Midlands Trains in 2008 to provide marketing and design support to the transport operator’s three main local routes within the Nottingham, Worksop, Lincoln and Leicester areas. Up until that point, the brand, which had been launched just two years earlier, had only been used to promote journeys in and out of London and to Paris via Eurostar. The new campaign would need to ‘speak’ to commuters and promote low-cost local travel and local offers. A series of residential mail-drops entitled Traveller were designed and issued in and around the East Midlands, initially as a four-panel fold-out flyer and later as an A4 duplex newsletter.

Design On The Road... There’s nothing quite like seeing your designs in action – wherever they were intended to be used. Whether it’s a poster on a billboard, a press ad in a newspaper or simply holding a newly printed flyer or brochure in your hands for the first time. But there’s something even more exciting about seeing one of your designs pass you in the street. And that happens a lot. When it comes to artwork for use on vehicles, we’ve designed everything from simple window vinyls to part-liveries to full bus-wraps. Here we present just some of our designs shown on and off the road... from our very first bus - an advertising wrap for Sunderland radio station, Sun FM, to our more recent projects like the Stagecoach North East 100 Metrocentre shuttle bus and the megabus.com bendy bus Sleeper livery.
