It’s been another fabulous summer at Amsterdamse Poort, with plenty of gorgeous weather! The merest ray of sunshine lured people of all ages outdoors to the ideal place to meet: Where else? For this issue’s Spotted page, we asked people about their favourite foodie (or other) hotspot at Amsterdamse Poort. We also offer a range of tips for a healthy lifestyle, and talk to several of the speciality shops in our colourful and exciting Shopperhal. Naturally, we’ve got an update on all the latest trends in clothing, coats, bags and other must-haves, with a selection sure to inspire you and keep you looking your fashionable best as the weather turns crisp. What’s the idea behind Shopping Amsterdamse Poort? Shopping Amsterdamse Poort is an interactive app and website that lets you explore Amsterdamse Poort online. It showcases all the shops and puts the latest products, great discounts and practical retailer information at your fingertips. From that double-discounted jumper, to the newest sneakers or a great lunch location, you’ll never miss out again! You can even ask shops to put an item aside for you to pick up later. So whether you’re at home on the sofa, at the office or en route by train, you can visit the shopping centre online via your laptop or smartphone in just a few clicks.

What’s the interactive aspect? The chat option puts you directly in touch with retailers, which is great if, say, you want to find out whether they’ve got those stylish shoes in a larger size. Or you can submit a search query to all the shops. Using our new ‘Fishing’ feature (in Dutch: ‘Hengelen’), you can type in the precise item you’re looking for – such as a fancy party dress – and the system will automatically link your query to all the retailers who carry that product. As well as instantly retrieving a list of shops where you’re most likely to find that item, you can also receive personal messages and offers from the shops themselves.

19 September: Pop-Up Podium Dancing and shopping: it’s the best of both worlds! On Saturday 19 September, Amsterdamse Poort will be turning up the music, with toe-tapping tunes and bands popping up at various locations for sensational live performances!
25-27 September: Poorterij It’s time for Amsterdamse Poort’s annual autumn street fair and market during the last weekend of September, with 150 stalls, various live acts, fantastic food, and plenty of fun and games for kids. Join us for a great day at the market!
8 October: Tasty Models In this part of Amsterdam, we appreciate good food! On Thursday 8 October, the four ‘Tasty Models’ will be dishing out delicious bites created by eateries at the Poort. Get ready to treat your taste buds!

Pita Pasta From mid-September, Pita Pasta will be serving up Greek takeaway! “My Greek partner and I opened this business together”, says co-owner Elisabeth. “All our products are sourced from Greek fair trade suppliers, and we make and sell fresh filled pitas, pastas, salads, yoghurt and deli products. We’re open daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner to take away, or you can enjoy a delicious meal or snack standing at one of our tables!” Cinnabon After Rotterdam, Cinnabon’s now conquering Amsterdam with its delectable cinnamon rolls and other baked goodies. High Speed Shopping With Rachid
Interested in a fifteen minute shopping spree at three or more shops? We had to repeat the question twice before Rachid (24) realized he was being offered a chance to go High Speed Shopping at Amsterdamse Poort! MEER? Magazine handed him fifty euros and then tagged along to report on his shopping adventure. 10
Born in Curaçao, Rachid has lived in the Netherlands since 2001. He was just on his way to work when we waylaid him with our irresistible offer. Overcoming his shyness, he answered, “Of course, I’d love to!” Scoping out the surroundings, he decided where the money would be best spent. Seconds later, it was off to New Yorker, where he whipped his two favourite t-shirts off a rack in under two minutes. He was in luck: they were on sale, starting the counter at two items for just €9,90! Turning down another Moda Di Ricardo, Briefly thrown by all the store finally led him to €19,95.

Today’s catch were Surinamese sausages and a big bunch of bananas. The cost: €6,10. With €8,70 and just one minute to go, Rachid decided to swing by Bloemactief ALI, where he found a Bonsai tree priced at €9,99. With a smile and a wink, Ali sold him the tree for €8,70. Clearly, it was Rachid’s lucky day! Happy, and pleased with his purchases, Rachid thanked us and then sped off to work on Bijlmerdreef. It was another successful High Speed Shopping adventure!

1 1 Aloette nail salon Astrid: “I started out 20 years ago selling aloe vera products. At a certain point I began filing nails as a service for women because there was so much demand. My customers had so much confidence in me: they encouraged me to do a course and open a nail salon. So I did, and the rest is history!” 2 Franci Melvin: “I’ve been working here for more than eight years now and still love it – the Shopperhal is always buzzing. As part of Moda Di Ricardo, we’re one of three locations at Amsterdamse Poort. This location was the first, though, so this is where it all started!”

The great thing about it is the wide variety of people and cultures you get here. And everyone knows each other. People that once came here as little kids in prams now bring their shoes to us. It’s great to see them grow up like that.” 5 Iqra Halal butcher Alam: “We’ve always been a family business. I took over from my brother in 2011, and we decided to locate here because sales are good. That’s probably down to the wide mix of cultures. Robby is really the one you should put in the photo – he’s the real face of our shop and the guy all the customers know.” 6 Sjanel flower shop Hidyet: “We’ve been here since 1982 and are part of Bloemactief Ali, a florist chain with five shops in Amsterdam’s Zuidoost district run by five Turkish brothers. Way back, I started out working for someone else, but I realized fairly quickly that I wanted to be my own boss. I took a course and then I took over the shop!”

Pitstop! Around lunchtime, Amsterdamse Poort is abuzz with people. For those seeking healthy food options, there’s plenty to tempt the taste buds. Spotting our colleagues Marieke and Felice, we rushed over to ask: What’s for lunch? “We wanted something healthy today, so we opted for Easy Fresh Falafel, where you can pick and mix a meal for seven euros. We got a combination of chickpeas, beets, cucumber, couscous and hummus, topped with delicious falafel balls and a zesty sauce. We don’t know what herbs they put in the sauce, but it’s divine!”
‘We like trying all sorts of foods’ Though Felice is new to the falafel experience, she’s already a fan. The two come to Amsterdamse Poort every day for lunch, they say, and Marieke’s been coming for years. “In the beginning, you had to slog through mud

and sand to get to the office. It was a quite a contrast. But now it’s really attractive; they’ve done a super job renovating it. Sometimes we’ll look in the shops too; you can find everything here.” We ask if they have any other lunchtime tips. “We both love Urban Salad. In the summer, especially, we like to get a fresh, healthy salad. In the winter we might get roti rolls with chicken and long beans, and Simit Sarayi does great toasted sandwiches. We both like trying all sorts of foods and getting a taste of different cultures that way. The mix of people and international cuisines is one of the things we love about the Poort!”
