Shrewsbury will rock with The Christians

The Christians are enjoying a resurgence right now. They have just appeared around the UK as Special Guests of Go-Go’s front woman, Belinda Carlisle, and are also appearing alongside Level 42 on a 22-date tour in October. Not bad considering it’s been a little while since they found fame with their many hits; Ideal World, Words, Hooverville, Whats in a Word, Harvest for the World, Forgotten Town and many more.

The band were always ‘cool’ and difficult to place (the name didn’t help – no religious connection – just the surname of the 3 brothers). They hit the music scene in a big way in 1987 when their debut album (which still remains the UK’s selling debut album from any band) went triple platinum, selling on the popular label Island Records and their second album COLOUR released in 1990, went to Number One (knocking a very disgruntled Phil Collins off the top spot).

The family grew up in Liverpool and often mimicked The Temptations by harmonising together, something that became synonymous – The Christians often referred to as, “The Temptations in ripped jeans”.

As with many 80s acts, the band are now busier than they’ve ever been says lead singer Garry Christian the very tall, ray-banned front man. “No disrespect to today’s artists, but I honestly think that people are lost in today’s music industry and long for the day when they could walk into a record store – talk to real people and listen to real music. The 80s and 90s were the last time music was normal, after that it went all weird with downloads and streaming and a strange language where loving music became something you did ‘solitarily’ through headphones, alone. That wasn’t EVER what music was supposed to be about – it’s a bit like sex – much better with someone else there too!”
