TRUE BLUE Class of 2020 on their last first day at All Saints’

For every shade of you.

Intentional inclusion of different mindsets and beliefs is a hallmark of Episcopal schools. They invite all who attend and work in them – Episcopalians and non-Episcopalians, Christians and non-Christians – to seek clarity about their own beliefs and to honor those traditions more fully in their own lives. Above all, Episcopal schools exist not merely to educate, but to demonstrate and proclaim the unique worth and beauty of all human beings, to celebrate every shade of a person’s true colors. This whole child approach is intended to build lives of genuine meaning, purpose and service in the world our students will inherit. Keep reading for stories of how our Class of 2020 seniors have left a positive impact on our School, each other and the world.

JUNIOR HONORS THESIS: ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE IN THE MEDICAL FIELD

“The cost of cancer care has been rising steadily for the past decade, and it is causing problems for the patients. In order to determine the plausibility of the solution, information regarding the current situation of AI, current processes of cancer treatment and research, and the issue of financial toxicity must be examined. The resulting solution to the issue is for artificial intelligence to be utilized in the better organization of immense amounts of information, the development of new and repurposed drugs, and in the process of diagnosing cancer patients in a timely manner.”

SENIOR CAPSTONE PROJECT: COMMUNITY FOR CURE

Jack addressed the unfamiliarity, limited knowledge about the cancer survival rates in teens and young adults through a cancer awareness week, distribution of gold sports bands to be worn to athletic events by students and athletes, and coordination of a fundraising event to benefit Rutledge Cancer Foundation in their effort to fund cancer research.

JUNIOR HONORS THESIS: MASS INCARCERATION OF AFRICAN AMERICANS

Nandi’s thesis research investigates how the United States targets African American people through the system of mass incarceration and the societal/ political implications of this system. The experts she interviewed helped her examine the role that discretion and implicit bias have played in the mass incarceration of African Americans.

SENIOR CAPSTONE PROJECT: HELPING FORMERLY INCARCERATED WOMEN REINTEGRATE INTO SOCIETY

“The U.S. has had a history of being ‘tough on crime.’ They want to help people to commit less crime but our Criminal Justice System does little to help rehabilitation and reentry efforts. Programs like Sanctified Hope are so important because they give formerly incarcerated women a second chance at life.”

JUNIOR HONORS THESIS: THE COST OF RECYCLING

“The recent ban on imported recycled materials from the United States to China led to a declining value of recycled goods. My thesis evaluates solutions to increase efficiency and wellness of the market as well as the environment.”

SENIOR CAPSTONE PROJECT: ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION CURRICULUM

In partership with Fort Worth Waste Management, Mitchell addressed the lack of environmentalbased education for elementary students by designing and teaching a lesson on composting to the fourth grade. He also developed 10 lesson plans for our Lower School Green Team (recycling, composting, water-wise practices, landfills, electricity, food, wasteful practices, animal awareness, plant awareness, gardening/growing own food) that consist of a lab activity, as well as a follow up slideshow presentation and discussion questions for each Green Team member to take back to their class.

JUNIOR HONORS THESIS: PEDIATRIC OBSESSIVE COMPULSIVE DISORDER

Anna Claire’s thesis tackled the topic of Pediatric Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, where she evaluated the efficacy of treatment options through scholarly research and interviews with cognitive behaviour therapists, treatment researchers and play therapists. “The professionals were able to give insight into how to best help these children, what should be avoided, and the most challenging aspects when working with them. The professionals emphasized the importance of being kind, creating relationships, and tailoring treatments, all while not blaming the child or accommodating their obsessions.”

SENIOR CAPSTONE PROJECT: AUTHORED A CHILDREN’S BOOK

Her project sought to address the stigma surrounding the mental health of younger students through a personallyauthored a children’s book, where the main characters, Ducky and Bun Bun, learn how to overcome anxiety. Her hope is to publish a limited edition to make available to child healthcare workers, counselors and school libraries.
