Welcome
ASFF opens on Thursday 3rd November and runs until Sunday 6th November. We are delighted to host ASFF in York, as York’s first international film festival. Due to the historical nature of many of our venues, we have a limited capacity for seating at our screenings. Seating will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. We have programmed enough screenings to ensure that you should be able to see all of the films that you would like to, but if there is a specific film that you want to see, please ensure that you arrive at the venue early. There are no adverts prior to screenings so please note that showings will start promptly at the times listed. Films are screened in their original language. If this is a language other than English, English subtitles will be provided onscreen.
#
All films screening are up for the Festival Awards. We have awards for each individual category as well as an overall festival winner. This year, we are running a People’s Choice Award. We will be using Twitter to determine the winner of this award.
To nominate a film for the People’s Choice please tweet the name of the film, along with the hashtag #ASFFvote. The film with the most nominations will win the award. The ASFF Festival Hub is located at Visit York, 1 Museum St, York, YO1 7DT. There is a map of York located on page 28 of this programme.

Catherine Yass filmed High Wire at the Red Road Estate in North Glasgow in 2007, which was once the highest social housing in Europe. Into the void between the planners’ concrete dreams, another dreamer, the French high-wire artist Didier Pasquette, steps out, at first gracefully, then hesitantly, and then he stops … High Wire is the ultimate expression of Catherine Yass’ interest in the vertiginous view – presented here as a short film that accompanies her multi-screen installation from The Artangel Collection.

“I was taught how to write by working professional writers – writers who are doing really well in their careers. You couple that with the visiting professionals, from the likes of the BBC and the Royal Court, and it really is an industry-facing course that’s pretty much armed me with the tool kit that producers and directors out there really expect me to have as a writer. “ Stephen Laughton MA Writing for Stage and Broadcast Media 2010
