BEAUTY With SHOPHalimah A

I am noticing fine lines appearing at the corners of my eyes. I’m aging and I don’t want to! There is a very popular product flying-out of leading pharmacies. It is L’Oreal RevitaliftDouble Lifting Eye (£10.49). This is a wonder cream and a gel that pump out together – one is for anti-wrinkling and the other for tautening the skin up. It is just what you need! Keep it in the fridge for an added benefit. Use twice daily, in the morning and at night, only on clean skin.

HAIR CARE

I am looking for a really sweetsmelling perfume since I am tired of the musky smells and the light/fresh smells. Can you recommend a beautiful perfume that is still young? My favourite fragrance at the moment has to be Nina Ricci’s Nina (£32.99). It is fruity and mouthwateringly floral, with woodsy, green notes. Use the body lotion from the same range alongside this fragrance for an added effect. Halimah A does hair, henna and make-up for weddings and other occasions. Contact her on www. henna-h.com

A BRIT IN AMERICA

Actress Rebecca Hazlewood talks about ER and making it in Hollywood

by ZEKRA RAHMAN Fans of the hit US medical drama ER will recognise Rebecca Hazlewood, who plays the role of Parminder Nagra’s cousin in the latest series. The talented actress has appeared in a number of other popular shows including the ITV drama Crossroads, as well as Bad Girls in which she was best known for her role as Arun Parmar. And after appearing in American film Kissing Cousins, there are hopes that the in-demand actress will break into Hollywood. On a recent, brief visit to London, Rebecca took time out of her action-packed schedule to talk to Eastern Eye about shooting for ER, what it is like living in Los Angeles and whether she has found romance in Hollywood. What attracted you to the role in ER? I knew Parminder already and the part was for a Sikh girl playing her cousin. So, it was fun and quite an easy role – my character is kind of cool, cheeky and English. And it was for ER, which is a global TV hit. Are you a fan of the show? Yeah. I mean I hadn’t watched it for a while because I don’t have a TV, but everyone knows about ER! What do you look for in a role before you agree to do it? I look for some kind of humanity in a role and anything where I can play a multi-faceted character. Something I can relate to emotionally in some kind of way. Did you have to do any research for your role in ER? Well, because I knew the character quite well and she was from London, I knew what accent to use. Also, Parminder and I worked on getting that same kind of vibe so that we looked like cousins who knew each other for a long time. What was it like working with her? Parminder’s great. It was really easy. We just went into it all very naturally. Was your experience of shooting in America what you expected it to be? It was just the same as shooting for British TV, but the studios are on a scale times 10. It was on the Warner Brothers lot, so you go past and there’s all this familiar stuff. It’s a huge studio compared to the ones in London. They don’t just have a few extras, they have hundreds of people who they just employ to lie around in bed all day. And there’s a huge street around the hospital, where they employ people to just drive around all day to provide traffic ambience. I was quite impressed by all that. Are there any differences in the style of directing? Well, it’s pretty much the same as English directing. But it’s a lot slicker, I guess, in some respects, because it’s America and everybody’s getting paid there.

Do you prefer filming there? I do. It is quite different. I think some British television is better in quality than American TV and some American shows are better than some British ones. I guess it’s up to taste at the end of the day. Any stand-out moments from when you were on set? (Smiles) Yeah. We had this weird bedroom scene, which I think they were setting up at the beginning for audiences to kind of wonder whether we were lesbians, then you realise that we are actually cousins! That was quite funny. I had a lot of fun filming that. How does life in LA compare to life in London and are there more opportunities there? It’s a lot more relaxed in some ways. The quality of life is much higher and it’s not as challenging in London. As far as work goes, I think the US has more, because there is a much bigger market. I mean, Los Angeles is a city that is built for films and television, compared to only a small part of London. Is there a big Asian scene there? It’s getting one now actually, especially because an Indian company bought Jaguar and Land-Rover and another one has got into partnership with [film studio] DreamWorks, so there’s a big interest in India at the moment. And there are a number of Indian directors and filmmakers who are creating little underground projects there. What’s the nightlife like? It’s a very Hollywood, showy scene and it doesn’t really interest me. I tend to go out with friends, hang out in the hills and go to galleries and art shows. Where was the most interesting place that you visited? I recently went up to Big Sur, which is a huge national park. It was really amazing. I have been to San Francisco this year as well. One of my films was showing there, so I
