ABOUT Baybeats is an annual three-day alternative music festival held in Singapore. It showcases various local singers and musicians as well as foreign acts. Baybeats was launched in 2002 as a platform to showcase Singaporean musicians and indie performers from across Asia to a local audience. The festival hosts three performance stages, which include the Baybeats Arena, its outdoor theater and two other smaller performance areas at the Powerhouse Stage and Chillout Stage. With a lineup that features a diverse array of musical genres and countries, the festival now attracts thousands of international musicians and revelers each year to Singapore as the go-to festival for experiencing the spirit of indie music in Asia.

A Shadow of a Sound: ANECHOIS now is certainly different from the ANECHOIS we were introduced to in 2011, and we mean that in the best way possible. New Beginnings: Adding guitarist Ahmad Khaliq to their lineup has definitely aided their journey towards even more intricate arrangements and powerful melodies that left a lasting impact even after their set.

ANECHOIS 2015

Refreshing Sound Of An Older Style: Baybeats is known for its diversity in genres, so fans of the rap rock genre, you can breathe easy now knowing there’s SG representation for this recently resurrected combination.

YOUNG 2015

Under Cover: Everyone likes a good song with bits of anti-establishment and plenty of heavy riffs to go round. So when Young let loose a cover of Rage Against the Machine’s ‘Killing in the Name’, the resounding reply was an agreeing ‘UGH’. Overheard: ‘Only young people can pull this off sia...’

recap recap recap recap recap recap Indie pop tropicalia: Our very own Two Door Cinema Club seems to work with the dancing crowd enjoying the show Merchants of DIY: Pretty interesting mercy they had for sale - a bottle opener made from a broken drumstick and nail Hypebeast #1: All frontman Adin Kindermann had to say was “You might know this song, this is Bender” and everyone else would dance/jump/singalong. Talk about the power of charisma

STOPGAP 2014

Sonic Youth: Like Stopgap, Aspectrum’s music attracted a huge crowd of youth Hypebeast #2: Frontman Tejo D’cruz really knew how to hype up the crowd - “I’m only 17, I want to have fun! Let’s take a selfie!” -/+: Energy levels of the band and the crowd were at 100% the whole time, a lot of singing along going on

FORESTS

23 JUNE 2017 ARENA

Sometimes, all you wanna do is rock the heck out. We’ve rustled through the meandering foliage of the Singapore music scene, and have found these boisterous lads who released their debut album just a few weeks ago. Forests‘ gung-ho music bares fangs through choppy math-rock tropes and juvenile punk that’d summon the mosh beast in you. Blast this loud, and howl along ’til you’re sore. weareforests.bandcamp.com www.facebook.com/weareforests twitter.com/wearenotforests

MONSTER CAT

19:50

25 JUNE 2017 CHILLOUT STAGE

Rock band MONSTER CAT have found a perfect balance between taking their music dead seriously and facing the unforgiving music business with tongue firmly in cheek. How else do you explain a consistent insistence that individual members be addressed as Hentai Cat, Psycho Cat and Meta Cat? -TODAY

REDUX This release showcases a re-formed 7-piece strong MONSTER CAT on record for the first time. Musically, the band revisits tracks from their sonically and thematically dense album “The Violet Hour”, but bolstered and rearranged by a larger lineup comprising some of the best talents from the Singapore independent music scene, the music is presented with a renewed sense of bombast and adventure. “Redux” encapsulates the essence of MONSTER CAT in its 2014-2015 configuration.

24 JUNE 2017 POWERHOUSE

At some point in our existence (punk/hardcore) there will be a day that it doesn’t matter what gender you are when you get on stage. But unfortunately, it continues to be that our scene is completely overtaken by dudes-so yes, when a girl gets on stage I get STOKED AS FUCK to see our fellow human beings kill it on stage. I hope bands like Radigals can continue to inspire many more to get on those stages, get in those vans and show Asia that the stage at a punk/hardcore show belongs to everyone. -UniteAsia

Since 2010, the Baybeats Budding Photographers mentorship programme has been sharpening the skills of promising young shutterbugs every year. This year eight amateur photographers are chosen to participate in photographer Aloysius Lim’s specially designed structured series of workshops and critique sessions.

BUDDING PHOTOGRAPHERS

Started in 2007, the Baybeats Budding Bands programme is an initiative to discover and showcase local bands with the potential to perform in Baybeats. The final eight budding bands earn a chance to hone their skills in a mentorship programme with prominent local musicians and play alongside local and overseas acts at Baybeats 2016! This years’ mentors are Bani Hidir , Daniel Sassoon, Errol Tan and Leonard Soosay.

BUDDING PROGRAMS

Baybeats Budding Writers is an annual initiative first launched in 2011. This programme enables youth who are passionate about writing for music with the opportunity to be a music journalist. Through a series of workshops, our Budding Writers conduct interviews with the Budding Bands and write articles related to the music scene and to Baybeats. The Budding Writers are mentored by Eddino Hadi, music correspondent for The Straits Times.

BUDDING WRITERS

BUDDING VIDEO ARTISTS

Final-year LASALLE Diploma in Broadcast Media students roll up their sleeves to take on roles as music video producers and directors. These students work with three Singapore bands in a full-on all-hands-on-deck project, directly dealing with behindthe-scenes and front-of-camera work to create music videos for each of the bands.
