Fashion Stylist
Being a fashion stylist is becoming a profession
that is in high demand. A fashion stylist collaborates with lots of different people to get the best out of the everything used to create the best look for the job required. There are three main types of styling these are editorial styling, commercial styling and personal styling. Stylists will work on editorial styling when creating a shoot using a theme or mood these are frequently seen in magazines with one concept used. Similar to this is commercial styling as this is also seen in magazines but this is focused on the brand being promoted. Personal styling is one to one styling which is become evermore popular as this is coming to high street shops. As a fashion stylist there are many tasks to perform to get the job done to the best standard. Stylists are needed to check over the shoot to get everything in order. Sourcing the clothes for the shoot can be difficult as they need to be able to get expensive on trend clothing that will suit the vision of the shoot. There is also props needed to complete the shoot which could be needed in varying shapes and sizes. As a stylist they will have to organize hair stylists and make up artists to be able to have it all flow. Also they are needed to advise the photographer and the editor on how the shoot and image will be done. Fashion stylists need to be creative to be able to create bold varied shoots time and time again. They need to have an eye for detail, colour and style. They will know what suits what shapes and sizes and what does not however this is not always to be followed. One of the most important parts of being a stylist is being able to forecast upcoming trends so the shoots are up to date or even ahead of themselves. Even if you have all of these things they are useless if you don’t have a good network of people to communicate with.
Brana Wolf There are many famous fashion stylists that have been very influential over the years to budding stylists of today. One of these talents is Brana Wolf who has styled for over twenty years and has been at Harper’s Bazaar for ten years and is now senior fashion editor. She has worked with top magazines such as Italian vogue and top designers like Valentino, Calvin Klein and Dolce & Gabbana. People that have worked with her have described her by ‘Brana is a force of nature when styling a show, absolutely awe inspiring’.
One of the most famous stylists of all time is the ‘super-stylist’ Katie Grand who has been the fashion editor of many successful magazines and is now the editor of LOVE magazine. She has worked with amazing designers, most famously Marc Jacobs has been a collaboration for years working on many different projects. Grand has worked with an endless amount of celebrities and designers to create images that will be remembered for being iconic. Quite a few of her shoots involve the model being naked but this could be to express the female form in an artistic way. Some might say she is the most wanted woman in fashion.

Some of her work has been included above.
Monochromatic Colours Monochromatic is where an outfit is made up of one colour throughout the whole outfit. This can be the same or different shades of that colour. Here are some examples of this being used in the fashion world.
Analogous Colours Analogous colours are the colours next to each other on the colour wheel. These go together well and aren’t too striking but are still visually appealing.
Complimentary Colours Complimentary colours are opposite one another on the colour palette. They also compliment each other well and enhance one another.
Triad colours are colours that are equidistant to each to other on the colour wheel. These make for a very vibrant and colourful outfit.

Different body shapes
People come in all shapes and sizes and these have now been defined into five main body shapes. These are: • Hourglass: equal hips to shoulders and slim waist • Inverted triangle: Broader shoulders than hips • Rectangle: boyish shape, straight all the way down • Pear: wider hips than top • Apple: wider middle
Here are some tips for different body shapes. If you are a hourglass figure you should: • Wear fitted clothing but not too tight • Wear clothes that split at the waist e.g. high waisted jeans • Wear clothes that accentuate your waist If you are an inverted triangle figure you should: • Wear clothes to create the look of a waist • Wear clothes to balance out the top • Wear full or a line skirts If you are a rectangle figure you should: • Wear clothes to create the look of a waist • Wear clothes to keep shoulders and hips In proportion. If you are a pear figure you should: • Wear clothes that give the illusion of broader shoulders. • Wear clothes that balance the hips to the shoulders
If you are an apple figure you should: • Wear clothes that minimize your middle • Wear clothes that give the illusion of a waist • Consider wearing minimizing underwear
Accessories
Belts can be used as a practical way of cinching in the waist or as the last touch to completely changing an outfit.
Jewellery is the main accessory used because there is so much of it! A necklace like this can change any outfit to glamour.
Hats are a great way to frame your face and hide bad hair days.
Handbags are fashionable and an essential item to your everyday wardrobe.
Scarves are a great winter accessory to keep you warm and to fancy up a plain outfit.
Headscarves can shift the attention to your face and highlight your perfect makeup skills.
Patterns and Textures Mixing patterns and textures is an on trend way of making a statement. Bold prints and textures are tricky to work with but when done right they can look incredible. Your personality will shine through as the prints you choose will reflect your style and overall reflects you! Karl Lagerfeld says “I want everyone to wear what they want and mix it in their own way. That, to me, is what is modern.” Alexia Gonzalez says “Texture play can add dimension and edge to an ensemble when you try mixing and matching different patterns and fabrics. The best way to play with texture is to pair contrasting fabrics in an unexpected yet polished way.”
This designer has used both bold prints and textures in the outfit. There are two main prints in this outfit and many different textures that all work together as one outfit. This has worked really well which is very difficult with so many different elements.
Plain jumper breaks up the outfit.

Tip: If wearing two prints make sure one print is smaller than the other. If they are both small prints it will be too busy. If they are too big they will make you look bigger. Milan Spring 2014 - Prada
Hair and Make-up
Hair and makeup is a key part of any runway show or photo shoot. As shown here it can help emphasize the theme of the shoot.
This would be a good contrast to simple classic garments Make-up like this would suit Aztec or African inspired clothing.

Photo Shoot
Evaluation The future trend I have chosen for AW16/17 is Dark Floral. Dark floral is more to do with the prints of clothing rather than the look of the garment. Either dark flowers are used or lighter flowers paired with a dark background. The styling is very gothic looking and darker than it would be for a normal floral shoot. In my shoot I used black clothing paired with various dark floral printed tops and a floral headband. I had simple makeup with dark eye make-up as this would create a more dramatic look. On my practice shoot I used the forest as my location as this goes well with the floral theme. However on my actual shoot I did this in the studio as it made the subject stand out more and the colours look better. I used dried roses as my main prop as this was the main feature of my shoot apart from the model. My target consumer group is someone who is quite creative, adventurous and outgoing. I would class my consumer group as young professional and I have targeted this market by using the magazine i-d which is quite an unusual outgoing magazine. This magazine is relevant to my consumer group as it is not just a fashion magazine it is also a music, art and culture magazine which could appeal to their other interests. My shoot was targeted at this group by the ay it was styled and photographed in quite a simple yet creative manner which could then be edited to fit better into the magazine have chosen. In preparation to my shoot I needed to do some planning to create the best shoot possible. I did some research into the dark floral theme to see the different types of print out there. I made some mood boards to give me an idea of the different things I need to take into consideration in my shoot such as location, garment, hair and makeup and props. These helped me decide how I would like things to look on my shoot. I made a call sheet for my practice shoot and one for my actual shoot which made sure everything was planned ahead of time so nothing was missed out or forgotten. I think my shoot went quite smoothly because it created some really good photographs. The only problem I encountered was with the camera not working at first but once this was fixed no problems came about. I think my practice run helped me as it helped with the positioning of the flowers and poses. From my practice shoot I learned that the photos looked better when the model is looking away from the camera. The planning helped as it made sure everything was sorted beforehand rather than wasting time on the day of the shoot. Sourcing was not a problem as I used a classmate as my model as they had clothes that fitted the theme so they brought these in themselves. My team consisted of my myself, a model and a make-up artist and we worked well as a team because as the model was being made up I could organize the scene and learn to use the camera. If I was to do my shoot differently I wouldn’t use the assistive lighting as these created a shadow on my images. Another thing I would change would be the white screen behind I would make more neat as this spoils some photos.
