ATS and Ruralco – a family for lower farm costs and better business options Rural service businesses have become larger entities in recent years, with outlets resembling their “big box” retail counterparts found in town. While the scale of these outlets may be impressive, the level of service and personal contact can leave rural clients feeling like they have been through a supermarket rather than a personalised farm supply business. Ashburton based ATS, and its nationwide card business Ruralco have worked hard to maintain a level of personal contact and an understanding of every farmer client’s business. At the same time the co-operative enjoys the economies of scale bigger service companies may offer, thanks to its innovative Ruralco Card business enabling it to grow beyond its traditional Mid Canterbury base. As a closely held co-operative owned by the farmer shareholders who use its services, ATS and Ruralco are able to listen to feedback from them, and respond quickly to their needs. Because ATS and Ruralco have listened, it offers a range of services tailored to the business needs of its shareholders, from the soil their businesses are based upon, to the power that helps their crops and grass grow. That focus on valued shareholders starts with the three carefully located ATS farm supply stores. The outlets in Ashburton, Methven and Rakaia are well positioned for Canterbury shareholders. The stores ensure ATS and Ruralco offer a retail hub that is also the base for its skilled field staff to operate from, but they are also a

welcoming break for its members from time on the farm. The team are there to discuss all your farm requirements, and the stores also provide a pleasant members lounge to relax in and enjoy a cup of tea or coffee. Staff at these stores each devote time and energy to their annual Instore Days in July. Always hugely popular with farmer clients, the days provide suppliers with the opportunity to showcase their equipment and services sold through ATS in what is essentially a “mini fieldays” at ATS Ashburton. More geographically challenged members are also capable of being served swiftly and efficiently through the Customer Service Centre via on farm deliveries. Those members unable to make it into town always have the option to dial 0800 BUY ATS and speak to their dedicated account manager. For clients buying orders over $1,000 through the Customer Service Centre or at ATS stores, they can have peace of mind it will be delivered on time and on farm. This takes the hassle out of the larger, more awkward purchases often required, and removes the problem of carting hazardous products home. But ATS and Ruralco have also gone a step further. Rather than building more expensive retail outlets to grow the business, ATS has worked hard on building relationships with existing suppliers, and giving shareholders access to those suppliers’ best prices through the Ruralco Card venture. The Ruralco Card has opened suppliers’ doors to shareholders and cardholders around the country, and today the card is accepted by over 2,500 businesses nationally. ATS and Ruralco have also built up a strong base of knowledge and service around the core inputs all modern farms demand today. Ruralco Cardholders whose cards are due to expire are reminded to keep an eye out for their replacement cards which will be in the mail. Replacement cards are usually issued in plenty of time – but cardholders need to check their expiry dates just in case. If a new card hasn’t arrived within a couple of weeks before the end of the month the card expires, they should contact ATS.

The popular sessions help farmers and small business operators compile their own health and safety manual, policy and procedures, to ensure they are compliant with the new Health and Safety at Work Act which came into effect earlier this year. Upon completion of the training, members will be able to apply for a discount on their ACC levies. The last training date for 2016 is 22 November at a cost of $550 (GST and member discount inclusive).
