Message from the Head of School To the Ashbury College Community,

On a strategic level, various priorities have kept us busy this year—not the least of which is preparing for the construction of the new Centre for Science & Innovation, which began to unfold this summer. The new space will consolidate our science and innovation offerings in one location in state-of-the-art premises. Support for this project has been strong, and led by our board and foundation, as well as our parent and alumni community. We are excited to see our programs thrive in this new space in 2019. We also have also made strong headway with our financial assistance program, effectively doubling our offerings over the next two years—all part of our campaign which will continue into the next school year. Thank you to all who have supported this campaign to date.

Once again, the success of our school year is thanks to the dedication of our faculty and staff, who both challenge and support our students each day, our leadership team and the many volunteer groups who are so instrumental in supporting our work—Board, Foundation, Guild, Parents’ Committee and Alumni. Probitas, Virtus, Comitas. Norman Southward Head of School – Directeur PAGE | 1

Junior and Senior School Closing ceremonies in June capped off a successful school year for 2017–18 and reflected Ashbury’s dynamic environment of teaching and learning. The student experience remained wideranging, where academics are duly complemented by outstanding opportunities in sport, arts, internationalism, and service to others. Full school life reinforced the sense of character and life-long learning that we seek to instill in students.

Message from the Board Chair program where parents from around the world trust us to take good care of their children. We are proud of our students as the vast majority are accepted into the university programs they are focused on. They leave us with the fundamentals of a strong education they can build from in whatever endeavour they follow.

As Ashbury College looks forward to its 128th year, we continue to be proud of our students from 58 different countries, who are focused on academic excellence, their community, ethical character development, well-rounded personal growth, and opened-minded internationalism. In order to deliver tangible outcomes on these core values, Ashbury is focused on worldclass teaching, continuous improvement, strong board oversight, and governance.

We want to thank the leadership team, which is always focused on the future. We thank the countless number of volunteers that keep Ashbury a hub of continuous activity. We thank the building and administrative staff who make everything work, day in and day out. Lastly, as we enter the fifth year of our strategic plan, we have an outstanding group of volunteer Board members who are engaged, knowledgeable, keen and committed to making sure Ashbury is on the right track.

We are proud of our committed and caring teachers who influence their students, both in terms of future areas of study, and to become individuals of character who care about their communities and friends.

To borrow from a well-known quote, “it takes a community to raise a child. We have a large and robust community helping us raise these young people.

We are proud that our school continues to have strong enrolment, high retention, and a very strong boarding

Richard J. Dixon Chair, Ashbury Board of Governors

Message from the Foundation Chair Ashbury continues to advance its successes, and the Ashbury College Foundation has followed suit. Our community is dedicated to supporting our students, both now and in the future, and we all benefit from that generosity. As Ashbury moves to its final year of its current strategic plan, one of our priorities remains expanding access to students of merit and potential by means of financial assistance. Last year, Ashbury College provided 50 mission-appropriate students an average of over $10,000 in assistance, based on families’ demonstrated financial needs. We continue pursuing our goal of having 10% of the student body on meaningful financial assistance. None of this success would have been possible without the hard work of many volunteers and staff and most importantly, your support of the school.

Thank you,

Our ground-breaking ceremony for our new Centre for Science & Innovation officially launched this exciting 14-month project and celebrated what it will bring to science, innovation, and financial assistance programs at Ashbury.

Ashbury students launch weather balloon to stratosphere Four Grade 11 students launched a weather balloon on a mid-June morning 100,000 feet into the atmosphere to collect data and images of the curvature of the Earth.

“We basically wanted to see if we could send something into space,” says student William Waters. “But we also wanted to show that scientific exploration is about more than just robots.” Waters says the group’s longer-term goal is to provide their experience as a model for other students, and schools, who may be interested in developing a launch of their own. “We learned a lot doing this and we could share those lessons with others,” he says. The students—Waters, Alec Donovan, Mohamed Ebsim, and Brandon Just—launched the balloon from Ashbury’s athletic field. The flight took several hours, eventually landing in Lac des Deux Montagnes, Quebec. All the equipment was recovered and the students are reviewing the data collected.

The balloon, built entirely by the students, had a GoPro camera on board to capture 180° footage of the launch. Additional equipment, purchased with help of Ashbury donors, recorded data such as temperature, air pressure, and provided a gas analysis.

The students initiated the project as a way to test their own construction and scientific collection skills, but also to inspire STEM-related curiosity in younger students as the school continues construction of its new Centre for Science & Innovation.
