CONCATENATION Instructor: Maria Oliver Fall 2018 Al Serkal Avenue, Dubai Redesigning the interiors of a warehouse in an art hub that houses a gallery, bookstore, cafe, and offices for meetings. The concept revolved around creating a sculpture that sculpts space according to function. The space is created with a sculpture made of corian that wraps and folds itself around the warehouse container.

KOMOREBI Instructor: Juan Roldan Spring 2019 Mirdif City Center, Dubai Designing a japanese pop up restaurant in a mall. The program required a sushi counter and seating for eight people. Komorebi means sunlight filtered through trees in japanese. The concept was used to create an perforated acrylic skin with interactive light that helped to create the atmosphere of a forest.

ARTIST IN RESIDENCE Instructor: Juan Roldan Spring 2018 Sharjah Art Foundation, United Arab Emirates Designing a space for an artist in residence in an art hub in the heritage area of central Sharjah. The program demands a public area and a private area. The public area consists of the main gallery space and the private area consists of a studio and relaxing space. It also includes a central courtyard, a tribute to the olden days and traditional houses of Sharjah. The project revolves around diffused light through various light boxes accross the project.

ACCOR HOTEL COMPETITION Mentor: Maria Oliver Fall 2018 Sofitel Hotel, Paris The Accor Hotel Competition was an International competition. The requirements of the project were to derive inspiration from a fashion designer and desgin the interiors of an existing hotel room accordingly. My group mate Layal Nabouni and I, were inspired by Iris Van Herpan. Her use of unconventional materials and forms always spoke about how non living things also created movement. We derived inspiration from this idea and created a room that was “alive�. The walls breathed and the bed moved.

Instructor: Camillo Cerro Spring 2019 Louis Vuitton Chaise Lounge by Marcel Wanders The Miniature Chair project was part of the Furniture and Furnishings course. The Structure was 3D printed, then spray painted. the leather was cut and handsown according to the dimensions and wrapped around the shell. It was then folded and glued in place. the joining mechanism of the belt was handsown and a buckle made of MDF was laser cut.

The Chambord Inachevé competition has been articulated within a seminar course entitled Architecture and Utopia. Prior to the beginning of the course several outcomes were set in anticipation for the final outcomes of the course. Firstly, students should explore fictional narratives as a basis for form making within a built environment. The course contents also considered how utopian ideals, as expressed in architectural and fictional literature– Thomas More’s Utopia in this specific case– informs architetural thinking and triggers architectural form-making. Special attention has been paid on how students could explore methods of understanding the built environment through graphic analysis and experimetal time-based narratives (experimental drawing and film making techniques). Challenging at the beginning, the course has also required a theoretical base, which was catered trough several assignments like the research of Italo Calvino’s Invisible Cities (i.e.) and the analysis (case studies) of the most important utopian architecture examples: from Etenne-Louis Boulleto Archigram, passing by all the progressive examples of radical architecture of Charles Fournier, Antonio Sant’Élia, Superstudio, Constant Nieuwenhuys, Lebbeus Woodsor Perry Kulper from the 20th and 21st century. Ecotopos began as a utopian dream within the course, as a collective effort of unveiling a common oneiric vision for the Château. The aim was to create a single image out of thirteen different dreams, which bit by bit has been achieved thanks to endless night of hard work, sketches, failures, discussions and agreements. The Spanish architect Miguel Fisac liked to explain how he understood architecture as the perfect balance between site conditions, programatic needs, a rational structure, areasonable budget and the...”unknown”. That unknown aspect of the creative process; that electric ethereal glue of (collective) sensitivity that in this specific case, makes things work. A Chinese whisper that has ended up making sense among the thirteen team members, where it actually can make sense: within an utopian reality, where everything can happen. Our Chambord is a story of imperfections, a frozen moment of what could be. A project that intentionally is open to interpretation. Our Chambord might not even be an architectural project. In our own words: “In this Utopia, it is the same: its movement, its rapidity, its constant adaptation and development requires that it is not perfect in the classical sense. It requires from itself the bravery to go forth without fearing a mistake, a flaw, or an imperfection. These imperfections that give towards a perfection- in this lies a perfect world. In these imperfections, in these changes, in these cracks and these developments and this movement comes a Utopia. In this world without fear, there is no looking back: only looking forward”.
