Spot the puppy and his best friend, Shine, headed to the park to play one day. It was their favorite place to play, with all the trees, the grass, and lots of room to run around. On their way to the park, they passed a couple of dirty, scraggly looking puppies. “Do you know them?” Shine whispered to Spot. Spot shook his head. “No,” he replied, “I’ve never seen them before.” The taller puppy, a husky, saw them. “Hey, Blondie!” she shouted, “Come here!” Shine gulped, “Me?” she squeaked. “Yeah,” said the smaller one, who looked like a pug, “we think you’re perfect for our next act.” Spot cocked his head. “Act? What act?” “Our act.” the tall pup answered. “We’re performers, you know.” “Yeah, we put on shows,” said the pug. “That sounds neat.” Spot said, stepping forward. “I’m Spot and this is my friend Sunshine.” “But you may call me Shine.” Shine added shyly. 6

“Hello, Spot and Shine,” said the husky, “my name’s Ellie, and this here’s my brother, Lucky.” Spot and Shine exchanged glances. Ellie and Lucky looked nothing alike! “In case you’re wondering why we look so different,” said Lucky, “it’s because, technically, we’re not related.” “We just sort of adopted each other.” Ellie explained. “Aww,” Shine exclaimed, “how sweet! How did you two meet each other?” “About a month ago,” said Lucky, “when Ellie found me, on the side of the road.” “Poor thing,” Ellie said as she remembered. “You should have seen him, standing there in the pouring rain, looking so lost and hopeless. I just couldn’t leave him alone like that.” Spot shook his head, then asked carefully, “What were you doing on the side of the road?” “My owners left me there,” said Lucky sadly. “They said I ate too much, and couldn’t afford to feed me anymore. So, that’s where they left me.” Shine’s eyes filled with tears. “You poor little thing,” she said in sympathy. 8

“For me, it was an allergy,” said Ellie, “My owners had me about a month. Then their child came back from summer camp, and was allergic to my fur. They dropped me off at an animal shelter, where I escaped and started living on the streets and looking for food. And one day, while walking alongside the road, I met Lucky.” “And we’ve been together ever since.” Lucky finished, “That’s why I call myself Lucky: I’m lucky to have Ellie looking out for me.” “Wow.” Shine said, “So then, you’re strays?” “Yep.” said Ellie with a shrug. “And we put on shows, for only one dog biscuit per dog,” added Lucky. “Okay,” said Spot, looking at Shine, “Just give us a few minutes to go home and get a dog biscuit, then we’ll be back to see your show.” “Alright,” said Ellie, “We’ll be waiting!”
