I was brought into this project for my expertise in Urban Design and enthusiasm for high-rise building design. I was part of a 6 person team. I used my Rhino and Grasshopper skills to design and model the complex components of this project. I also used parametric environmental analyzing software to determine the proper orientation of building and facade modulation to comply with sustainability requirement as well. Beside design, I did conceptual diagrams to explain the structure and mechanical principles of this design proposal. I made sure the design complies with the local building code as well.

BUILDING MASSING CONCEPT

PROJECT INFORMATION

CONTEXT

SITE PARAMETER

MAXIMISING SITE VOLUME

SHIFTING THE MASSING

The site is located in a fast developing area in Jakarta. It is adjacent to Fatmawati road and is surrounded by residential and mixed use developments around. Being very close to the future metro station, the site provides an opportunity to give identity to the area.

The setback allowed for the site ranges from 11 to 15 meters. Addressing the setback makes some corners of the site to be narrow, hence challenging to deal with.

The towers are placed strategically in order to avoid overlooking, allow ventilation and most importantly to maximise the site volume in terms of density. The towers are at a maximum of 33 storey tall and sitting between them is a pavilion like reception building.

The rectangular tower footprint is broken up into parts and shifted to adjust to the site. It also adds more surface to allow views for the units.

VERTICAL BREAK

HORIZONTAL LAYERING 10/11/2017 2:23:39 PM

Vertical breaks are introduced to the towers The are broken horizontally create the original size of to this drawing is A1 towers (594mm x 841mm) Copyright © 2017 WATG. to All rights reserved. allow ventilation for the deeper part of the units a distinct base, body and top. It is additionally and also to break the large facade. It helps emsliced horizontally to create refuge area which phasize the sense of verticality. also acts as community garden space. By having the refuge areas at different levels on each of the tower, they start having their own identity.

SKY-GARDEN MODULE

ARTICULATING THE FACADE

A modular facade system is designed and tested out in singularity which can create an iconic expression to the towers. It acts as floating garden for the residents in the sky effect while providing shade to the units. Although they live at a higher unit, with this module introduced, they never feel far from nature.

The garden in the sky boxes, when multiplied creates an iconic mask for the tower which expresses the notion of nature, sustainability and a better living condition for the units. It also in a way gives back nature to the city and helps create a natural and softer cityscape of Jakarta.

I was brought into this project to work on the facade design. I had a senior project designer overseeing this project but was given the responsibility to lead this project with a small team by myself. I, along with other designers worked closely in a collaborative way and came up with several design options, amongst which the client chose the one that appeared to be like floating boxes in the sky. Later I took the design and detailed it for planning approval while selecting appropriate materials. I worked closely with the local architects to make the building compliant of local codes while going trough some design iterations. I also developed the reception building, addressing client’s wish to make it welcoming and ‘resort-like’.

Located in the central part of Jakarta, Indonesia, this project consisted of 4 residential towers, a reception lobby and a show flat unit. The client went to different designers for this project before and when it came to WATG it already had the plans approved by the planning committee. WATG was responsible to work on the facade without changing the plans significantly. The client asked WATG to express the facade in a simple but appealing gesture and then look at the other components (reception building and show flat unit) in more detail.

JW MARRIOTT DANANG RESORT Da Nang, Vietnam

PROJECT INFORMATION JW Marriott Danang project includes 801 key five-star hotel with other facilities. It includes restaurants, swimming pools, a fitness center, a spa, a steam room, conference and parking facilities. WATG architecture, interiors and landscape team was involved in this integrated service project. Spread across a huge site, the program area of the project was more than 90,000 sm, making it very dense and compact. When WATG got this project, the structure of the hotel towers were already fixed. The client asked for a design that represents Vietnamese culture and also have some iconic forms that represent the sea which the site is adjacent to.

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES I have been a part of the design team working on this large scale luxury resort in the coast of Da Nang in Vietnam from the veru beginning. Due to the project status upon start, there were a number of constraints that we were required to work within which was challenging at first but forced us to develop creative and innovative design solutions. I was given responsibility of the hotel towers to conceptualize and design the façade elements. I produced sketches, physical and digital models and details to convey my ideas to the client. I studied materials for the façade and also talked to different suppliers to make the design cost effective. I also went to the construction site to co-ordinate design and specification during construction.

SOLAIRE INTEGRATED RESORT Incheon, South Korea

PROJECT INFORMATION Located very close to Incheon airport, the site was divided into two parts. Muuido is the site along the bay and Silmido is a neighbouring island connected with a bridge. The 1000 key hotel, a casino, a theme park and an art school were part of a huge program that was supposed to be located on a serene 17 hectare site facing the sea. The challenge was to have a single gesture which unifies different components which resonates the graceful nature and talks about Korean culture. The final product was also expected to be the result of a combined collaborative effort of both WATG and the local architect. This was a competition by invitation.

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES Considering the scale of the project and the time constraint, designers were given their own component to work with while talking with each other so that it becomes a holistic design. I was given the hotel block to work on which I designed using Rhino and Grasshopper. I tried to ‘sculpt’ the hotel into 2 wings in a way that it appears to be looking at the ocean and also looks unique from different angles. I later documented the Rhino sculpting process to share it with the rest of the office. I also spearheaded to take the level of in-house post production rendering to a higher level using this project as a test bed. I experimented and implemented my vray and photoshop skills to produce quick renderings for this project which has since then been a norm in the office. The competition project was for a month and I was involved from the beginning till the end. Status: Competition won by WATG but the project went on hold

CRIMSON RESORT & SPA Boracay Island, Phillipines

PROJECT INFORMATION The project site is located on the northern tip of Boracay, it measures 2.9 hectares and it is accessible by a private road; it is oriented toward the west, has a beautiful white sand beach and its ocean views are framed by a small island called Naked Rock to the north and a rock peninsula on the south. It is a sloping site which offers a good opportunity to stagger buildings and create an array of vistas from the majorities of the guest rooms and public spaces. It also has a small private island called Naked Rock. The current architectural program follows the original development brief proposed by the client with some adjustments to the key type distribution, overall there will be 190 keys, a spa, a ballroom, 3 restaurants and two bars.

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES I came into this project at schematic design stage. I was given the responsibility to design the villa types and a beach restaurant. The project already had a unique architectural expression with the use of simple form and local patterns. The buildings I was designing also had to speak the same language. I did sketches, models in Revit and tried to document the details in a very efficient way. I also helped other team members of the team with their components as well. I was still learning Revit at that time but tried to be a very quick learner and speak out to express design ideas and enthusiasm about details. I was involved from Schematic Design to Design Development phase. Stage: Under construction.

FOUR SEASONS HOTEL Tianjin, China

PROJECT INFORMATION Four Seasons Tianjin is housed in one of two new towers, both of which are supported by a podium for leisure amenities. The 52,000sm complex contains 90 residential units, 5,000sm of retail space and 259 hotel guest rooms in the 210m tall Four Seasons Tianjin tower. WATG was responsible for the architecture and interior design of the hotel.

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES This was my first project after joining WATG. I joined the design team after the concept stage. I was given the responsibility to design the facade modulation and details while consulting witht the team. The office didn’t roll in Revit at that time so this project was seen through till Design Development in Autocad. I experimented with Autocad parametric block feature with regards to the facade design as it was quite repetitive which helped the team be more efficient. HI tried to do quick design iterations to come up with different options and finalize the facade design. I also grew great enthusiasm to learn about hotel back of house design. I was involved from Schematic Design Phase and saw the project through Design Development. Stage: Constructed.

MISC. PROJECTS Apart from the projects shown earlier, Iwas also involved in a number of other projects around the world. Some were part of business development proposals, some went to schemtic design phase and went on hold. Regardless of scale, location and complexity I tried to approach every project with passion for good design using latest technologies. I have always tried to be understanding of client’s need, site constraint and the environment. Beside working on projects, from time to time, I also shared tips and techniques for other designers to learn from by organizing brown bag sharing sessions. Rhino It Yourself
