Message from the director
Parks Projects…
In the fall activity guide I talked about upcoming projects for Ashland Parks and Recreation. I’m extremely proud of the progress we’ve made—and continue to make—on a very aggressive projects list. Recently completed projects include: • Garfield Park…Full parking lot paving, Basketball court resurfacing • Hunter Park…Crack seal and seal coating of parking lots, Tennis court resurfacing Also new on one tennis court at Hunter Park are lines for youth tennis. We think this useful instructional aide will help foster youth tennis within our community. Look for the newly installed outdoor ping pong table at Hunter Park. This will soon be joined by several pieces of outdoor exercise equipment. Much work at Hunter Park also occurred on the Little League fields, with new grading on the base paths that enhances playability. • Lithia Park…Tennis court resurfacing, Pickleball lines drawn on one court Pickleball is a fun and exciting game and the lines will add a new flavor to an old amenity. Watch for upcoming opportunities to learn this fast-growing sport through Ashland Parks and Recreation. • Oak Knoll Golf Course…Irrigation and drainage overhaul, Newly constructed greens # 7 and 8, Crack seal and seal coating of parking lot, Mistletoe removal, Trimming of 47 trees in and around golf course • Railroad Park…Basketball court resurfacing • YMCA Park…Crack seal and seal coating of parking lots All in all, it’s been a great summer and fall, with improvements and enhancements made to our much-loved and used parks system. As we move into the winter and spring seasons, watch as more projects move forward. One of the biggest projects you will see in the spring is the reconstruction and “facelift” of Hunter Park sidewalks. 2013 is going to be great!
Thank You, JoAnne Eggers… For the first time in 16 years, something different is about to happen. Starting this January, JoAnne Eggers will not be on the Ashland Parks and Recreation Commission. Four terms, 16 years. That’s longer than most people hold a single paying job, let alone a volunteer job. This particular volunteer job often requires saying “No” when you would rather say “Yes.” This volunteer job requires working with budgets and within budgets when you would rather provide all things for all people. It’s a rewarding, yet punishing, volunteer position. It means making the right decisions for the greatest needs of the community balanced against the greatest needs of nature, all amid challenging fiscal realities. It means trying to find that sweet spot between loving a park, program, playfield, nature center, senior center, pool, skate facility, golf course… and overloving it versus not loving it enough. Parks and park amenities are like children: each is a bit different, with its own individual needs. The secret to a successful Parks Commissioner is understanding those differences and working to create the greatest good for all concerned. Ashlanders love their parks. It shows in everything we do. JoAnne Eggers embodies Ashland’s love of parks. Ashland is blessed. We are blessed with citizens who step forward JoAnne Eggers (left) at the 2008 4th of July Parade, celebrating the and put their lives on hold to serve our community. Since I arrived centennial mark for the Ashland Parks Commission and Lithia Park. some nine years ago, I have said good-bye to several wonderful Former commissioners Melody Noraas (center) and Jean Crawford (right). commissioners—Diane Amarotico, Melody Noraas, and Mike Gardiner—all of whom took turns sitting in those chairs on the third and fourth Mondays of each month. All showed dedication to Ashland along with countless other commissioners, both past and present. Ashland is blessed, all right. We love our parks and we put great people in those chairs. Sincerely,
Don Robertson, Director Ashland Parks & Recreation, Building Community

Are you ready to experiment with water conservation, going beyond drip-irrigation and heavy mulching? Are you interested in working with nature, taking your time to utilize it in your quest for a drought-tolerant landscape? This class explores some old and new ideas for the adventurous gardener. Although the ideas are new landscape design techniques, many have been used in agriculture for hundreds or thousands of years. Come explore new possibilities in water-conserving landscapes. Espalier Pruning: Creative Production in Slim Places Learn how to direct and slow the growth rate of woody plants. They are surprisingly malleable and their branches can be condensed, simplified, bent, trained and coaxed into interesting shapes and patterns: serpentine, vine-like freeform, or formal. Two-dimensional patterns can be created with a patient hand and observant eye. Ginkgo, dogwood and smokebush are a few unusual ideas for a flattened, stretched bonsai effect. Since fruit and flowers are more abundant on slow growth, this technique is equally effective for fruit trees and for flowering shrubs and trees. The sculptural forms you create are pleasing to the eye year-round. Instructor Julie Gates is a horticulturist, certified aesthetic pruner and arborist with over 30 years’ experience designing, maintaining and pruning residential gardens from Portland to San Francisco. She teaches pruning workshops and private lessons for home gardeners and landscape companies and is a contract pruner. The goal of the Parks Commission is to provide and promote recreational opportunities and to preserve and maintain public lands. The department has three divisions: • The Parks Division operates, maintains, constructs, and plans parks and recreational facilities within the system. It also develops new parks and administers open space areas. • The Recreation Division provides recreation activities for people of all ages. • The Golf Division operates, maintains and provides professional services for the Oak Knoll Golf Course, a 9–hole municipal course owned by the City of Ashland.
