Dive into the world of assemblage design and uncover the secrets told within Suzanne Visor’s workshop at the SPIN Festival in 2014! This in-depth story delves into the inspiration behind Suzanne’s silk paintings and how she creates her unique pieces. During this two-day workshop she taught her four eager students how to use the artistic and alchemical processes to convert a sow’s ear into an opulent silk purse. This purse, however, was just the tip of the creative iceberg. Suzanne also trained her students to see beauty in everyday items and taught them how to transform common, mundane materials into extravagant, one-of-a-kind works of art. “Like a beachcomber, a collector, or a scavenger wandering among ruins, the assembler discovers order as well as materials, by accident.” Suzanne shares her own secrets of inspiration and where her passion for silk painting originates. She divulges how the New Mexican sunsets give her moments of clarity in her creative process. She speaks about the ancient ruins, breathtaking horizons and endless landscapes that fuel her passion for silk painting. “Flying across the country throughout my life, I look forward to coming home to New Mexico. From the east I gaze from the window for glimpses of crop circles in Kansas; then gradually the arid, red mesas and mountains that are home appear.” Even more so, Suzanne uses her passion, creative processes, and experience to teach her students how to collaborate in an analytical, conceptualizing and critiquing manner in order to transform something from humble beginnings to genuinely beautiful artistic pieces. This story will take you back to the 2014 Festival and give you a glimpse into Suzanne’s perspective-altering workshop, and make you feel as if you were there.
