SAVANNAH WASH

PITTSBURGH, PA Fluidity and Rigidity – Two opposing forces that work together in nature to create harmony. Named Savannah Wash, this installation was designed and constructed into the giraffe exhibit at the Pittsburgh Zoo. The installation was implemented to represent these coexisting forces. This man-made structure is interacting with tall native grasses. When the grass has grown to maturity, the painted wood creates visual aesthetic, but also forms a cultural tie to the zoo exhibit. HYDROLOGICAL ACTIVATION STATE COLLEGE, PA Hydrological Activation was a submission to the 2015 EPA Campus RainWorks Challenge. The purpose of the project was to cultivate stormwater management on campus using innovative and effective design practices. This submission was designed at Penn State’s University Park campus in what students and faculty know as the “Au Bon Pain Café Courtyard.” This courtyard is often used a transitional space for students entering and exiting Au Bon Pain Café or the Visual Arts Building. The current state of the courtyard has its problem area – primarily small pockets of flooding which causes soil compaction and erosion. The proposed design would encompass educational, recreational, and artistic properties to solve this existing issue. Hydrological Activation embraces the characteristics of artful rainwater design and transforms this bland courtyard into a gathering space for students and faculty. ROSE RESIDENCE

BETHLEHEM, PA I was contacted by the Rose couple in early summer, who were interested in making some renovations to their backyard. Living in a double in an older section of Bethlehem, there was not a lot of space to work with; however, there was more than enough to create a relaxing oasis for the pair. They described their desired backyard giving off a “cottage feel,” and with the initial appearance of the yard, this would pose a challenge. While a handful of vegetation that the Roses requested not be removed, a majority of the site was needed to be cleared of a variety of poison and weeds. Through a combined effort, my father and I worked together creating cost estimates, design plans, and implementation of the design. We completed the project leaving the couple more than satisfied with the end results.

HEALING GARDEN

BALTIMORE, MD Baltimore was a booming city, though from economic decline in the 1970’s, current trends show that there is an overwhelming number of vacant properties. Physio-ecological and social components of Baltimore are in jeopardy and decline in these neighborhoods calls for a change. This change would revitalize run-down neighborhoods and make safe recreational spaces available for the community to operate as a uniďŹ ed entity. Like the characteristics of an egg, vacant inner block parks will be transformed into a design that is composed of many layers, each piece playing a vital role in the overall anatomy of the design. Design begins in Inner Block Park 86 and will introduce opportunities for urban agriculture, local events, and tranquil meditation. Community involvement is crucial, though there is hope that locals will take ownership once the design is implemented.

EINTRITTSPARK

BONN, GERMANY The design for Eintrittspark took a more abstract approach experimenting with a threshold concept. With the proposed area that needed design intervention, there was minimal green space and minimal connection across the rail line. Through the use of urban acupuncture, an empty grass lot located across from the Bonn West tram stop. The connection across the tram line consists of an artistic structure - a red, circular platform equipped with seating along the outer perimeter. In order to promote purpose and movement across the tram line, a public park was also implemented into the design. The public park moves through a series of spaces including a walking track, grassy mounds, an exercise station, and picnic stations. When combined, the user experiences a series of transitional spaces that promote speciďŹ c user interests.

UMBT COMMUNITY PARK As a recently designed community park, some of my work experience with URDC involved developing a donation plan to get the community involved. With access to a donation booklet, residents have the opportunity to select which site element (tree, shrub, site furniture, site amenity) they want their donations to provide. Each plant and site amenity were placed appropriately to pay homage to the striking views and existing architecture. In additional to the overwhelming recreational activities provided on site, a riparian-meadow transitional zone and an arboretum are implemented to provide educational opportunities as well.

PHOTOGRAPHY

My interest in photography has been growing since I owned my ďŹ rst digital camera. I now use a Nikon D3100 DSLR camera to capture my experiences.

FREEHAND DRAWINGS My interest in drawing started when I was a child. Still to this day, I carry around a small sketchbook for when the moment strikes. Sketching is an outlet of self-expression that I truly enjoy.
