Chances are you have some fond memories of coming here as a kid with your family, and now that you have a family of your own, it’s still the place with that same old magic you knew growing up. Take poll position on a go-kart racetrack or see what obstacles you can master on a mini golf course. Slip slide away at a waterpark or just enjoy the scenery and the breeze on a stroll through the park. Get out and discover the natural beauty of this area. You can get up close and personal with all the indigenous wildlife, including alligators, sea turtles, and herons, and you can even watch dolphins play.

BEYOND BEACH

No one could fault you if that’s all your escape consisted of, but you’d definitely be doing yourself and your family a favor by getting out and seeing what else this diverse community has up its sleeve. History happened in this area, and it continues to happen today, coming to life in museums and landmarks, all with their own stories to tell. One minute you’ll be finding great deals at the Tanger Outlets in Foley and the next going skyhigh on the Southeast’s largest Ferris wheel at The Wharf in Orange Beach. Discover delicious local food at places like Billy’s Seafood and Jesse’s Restaurant. Get up close to some exotic wildlife like lions, tigers, and monkeys at the zoo, or venture out and see indigenous animals in their natural habitats along the Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail and the Magnolia River. Beyond the beach you’ll find things you may not have even thought of before— sights and sounds and experiences removed from the shoreline itself, but tied inextricably to this region.

Gulf Coast

Secrets

THE ALABAMA COASTAL BIRDING TRAIL The Alabama Coastal Birding Trail winds through more than 50 birding sites in Baldwin and Mobile Counties, and is enhanced by directional and interpretive signage. There are different loops, so you can take your time and do a different one each morning, or take in all three the same day. In between, you’ll find plenty of places to eat, sightsee, and soak in the local flavor. So, get out your binoculars and cameras. Alabama’s Gulf Coast provides plenty of opportunities for avian appreciation.

THE BON SECOUR NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE Drive west along Fort Morgan Road, out toward the eponymous fortress, and you’ll come to the Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge, 7,000 acres of protected green space for a number of species of wildlife, some indigenous to the Alabama coast, and some just passing through. The refuge is a haven for alligators, sea turtles, endangered Alabama beach mice, and hundreds of different kinds of migratory birds. In fact, the name Bon Secour comes from the French for “safe harbor,” an appropriate moniker because of its serene, unspoiled beauty. DOWNTOWN FOLEY The downtown area of Foley looks like it leapt off a Norman Rockwell painting. It’s quaint and inviting, a little piece of preserved Americana from the 1950s. Storefronts display books and gifts and antiques, as if Mayberry were near the beach. Be sure to stop into Stacey Rexall Drugs and Soda Fountain for one of their delicious Key Lime Shakes, listed on the “100 dishes to eat in Alabama before you die.” LITTLE LAGOON PASS About two miles west of Highway 59 is a great out-of-the-way spot perfect for fun in the sun. Maintained by the Alabama State Park System, Little Lagoon Pass is the place to go if you want to get away from the large crowds that inhabit the other public beaches. You can play in the sand or float in the shallow water all day. Fishing is great there, too. Sit on the seawall and pull fish and crabs right out of the pass. Curious and greedy herons will probably come right up to you, hoping to enjoy your catch, or at least your bait. MAGNOLIA SPRINGS Tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the crowds is Magnolia Springs, a little river community where it seems like time stopped. What the village lacks in size, it more than makes up for in charm. The people who live along the Magnolia River still get their mail delivered by boat. Take a bike ride under the canopy of oak trees on, well, Oak Street before stopping into Jesses’ Restaurant for an exquisite meal. C OA ST 360.C OM

day tripping

D TRIPPINAY G

You never know what you might find when you explore here. We’re more than just beaches and waves.

Sure, Alabama’s Gulf Coast is the place to be for the hottest attractions, the finest dining, and the most luxurious accommodations, but we’re also a hub for other great destinations, all just a short drive away. This area has many interesting places, all inviting you to see what they have to offer and all filled with smiling faces and generous doses of that Southern hospitality for which we are famous. So, take a day trip away from your vacation and check out your surroundings. You’ll love what you find. PENSACOLA Pay tribute to the men and women who defend our country in historic Pensacola, Florida. Head over to the National Museum of Naval Aviation and explore aviation from days past. For a heart-pumping experience, be a spectator at the next Blue Angels Air Show. Visit the Veteran’s Memorial Park/Wall South, or drive down to beautiful Gulf Breeze. DAUPHIN ISLAND/BELLINGRATH GARDENS Stroll 65 acres of year-round blooms or take a river cruise aboard the Southern Belle at the beautiful Bellingrath Gardens & Home. Head south to the Dauphin Island Estuarium for a look at Mobile Bay and its inhabitants. Take a tour of historical Fort Gaines. A ferry runs to Fort Morgan every 90 minutes.

The Mississippi Gulf Coast has something for everyone. MOBILE Spend a day in Mobile’s antebellum mansions and museums. Experience the festive tradition of Mardi Gras. Visit Mobile’s most famous attraction, the USS ALABAMA Battleship, and step into the depths of the USS DRUM submarine. The park also serves as a home to planes and military tanks and a flight simulator. You can also check out South Alabama’s most-visited attraction, The Exploreum, and play with hundreds of hands-on science exhibits and interactive virtual reality games. Experience films in larger-than-life format in the IMAX theater. The Exploreum was named this year’s Alabama Attraction of the Year, and we think you’ll see why. THE EASTERN SHORE Mobile’s Eastern Shore is known for its quaint coastal towns of Fairhope, Daphne, and Point Clear. Here you’ll find moss-draped trees, flowering roadside plants, unique shops, and delicious foods. Spend a day strolling the perfectly manicured paths, window shopping in the wide variety of stores, and snacking in the locally owned eateries. Land in paradise wherever you hit. Say you’re at the tee box, and it’s a tough par-4 with a dogleg to the left. Do you play it safe, or do you try to hit over the trees? If you’re playing on one of the lush, gorgeous courses on the Gulf Coast, it won’t really matter, because wherever you hit, your ball will land in paradise. That’s the beauty of golfing the Gulf, it’s always a win-win day, no matter whether you birdie or bogey every hole. Orange Beach and Gulf Shores golf courses are among some of the best in the world, designed by masters of their craft, who complemented what nature had already laid out. To help you get the most of the area’s pristine links, many hotels offer spectacular golf vacation packages, perfect for weekend getaways or business trips. When it’s time to leave the course for the day, you can be pampered at a local spa, have an unforgettable meal, and get a good nights sleep. go fish

f ish

This area of Alabama got its start as a sleepy little fishing community, where men cast their nets for the abundant seafood the waters of the Gulf provided. They spent their evenings swapping big fish tales and fishing tips over rounds of cold beer and great food. Today, the resort communities of Gulf Shores and Orange Beach aren’t so sleepy anymore, but they’re still filled with the same fisherman spirit, and the waters are just as bountiful as ever. Orange Beach and Gulf Shores fishing charters are running all the time. Marinas and guide services dot the shore, all ready to take you on a deep-sea fishing adventure. You may find that you like the inshore or surf fishing better, or you might want to cast your line from the newly rebuilt Gulf State Park Pier. We’ve got it all here.

Sure, when you’re at the beach it’s almost a necessity that you have a wonderful seafood dinner, with catches so fresh they were swimming only a few hours before you take your first bite. We also have succulent steaks, savory soul food, delectable ethnic cuisine, and so many more that you might not be able to sample them all in a few trips. But that’s okay. We love repeat customers. If you can’t figure out where to start, we can definitely help! We can tell you all about the best restaurants in Gulf Shores, Orange Beach, and Foley. We’re also happy to introduce our Let’s Eat host and intrepid food critic, Sally Ellis, who will take you up and down the Coast, sharing inside secrets about some of our favorite eateries. TOURIST SERVICES & IMPORTANT INFORMATION (JUST IN CASE)

RED FLAG WARNINGS A red flag flying on a public beach means strong currents and possible undertows are present. Do not swim when red flags are present. If you are caught in a current or undertow, relax as much as possible until the current brings you back to the surface. Swim parallel to the shore until you are free of the current. Never swim alone. GREEN = LOW HAZARD Calm conditions Exercise caution

YELLOW = MEDIUM HAZARD Moderate surf and/or currents

SINGLE RED = HIGH HAZARD High surf and/or strong currents

Sometimes your vacation can hit a little snag, but don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. Tourist services from beach rentals to medical facilities are all here, and they’re all ready and willing to take care of whatever you need. We’re here to answer any questions you may have. Visit www.coast360.com and tune in to Coast360 TV for tons of helpful information from tanning advice to the beach flag system. TANNING ADVICE During the summer, the sun really puts out the heat, and lots of times, you can get so caught up in the fun, you can forget the number one rule of having a good time on the beach: wear your sunscreen! According to the American Academy of Dermatology, it’s best to use broad spectrum sunscreen products to protect against UVA and UVB rays, with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of 15 or higher. An SPF of 30 is ideal, and Dr. Sanjay Gupta, of CNN, says anything higher than that provides only slightly more coverage. For example, going from an SPF of 60 to 90 gives you about one percent more protection. RIP CURRENTS According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, rip currents are powerful, channeled currents of water flowing away from shore. They typically extend from the shoreline, through the surf zone, and past the line of breaking waves. Rip currents can occur at any beach with breaking waves, including the Great Lakes. These things can be deadly, so here’s what to do if you’re caught in a rip current:

DOUBLE RED = EXTREME HAZARD Water closed to the public.

Remain calm to conserve energy and think clearly. Never fight against the current. Think of it like a treadmill that cannot be turned off, which you need to step to the side of.

PURPLE = DANGEROUS MARINE LIFE Sharks, jellyfish, or other harmful marine life present.

Swim out of the current in a direction following the shoreline. When out of the current, swim at an angle—away from the current—towards the shore. If you are unable to swim out of the rip current, float or calmly tread water. When out of the current, swim towards shore.

JELLYFISH STINGS In case of a jellyfish sting, avoid putting fresh water on the injured area. Instead, pour vinegar on it to stop the pain, then scrape the tentacle fragment from the skin. A credit card will work in a pinch.

If you are still unable to reach shore, draw attention to yourself by waving your arm and yelling for help.
