The Elementary Inclusive Education Degree* prepares you to teach kindergarten through sixth grade. Coursework prepares you to excel as a leader in today’s diverse classrooms. Additionally, you have the option to supplement your degree with a second major in early childhood education, or a minor in special education or teaching English as a second language (TESL).

What does Inclusive mean? Bonus! You get more features included in your degree! In addition to the traditional subject areas of an education degree, you benefit from the newest updates to the elementary inclusive education program at MSUM. Special Education. In order to meet the academic, social/emotional and behavioral needs of each student, you learn the best strategies in both general and special education. Employers find MSUM students very well prepared for diversity in the classroom. Technology. Kids today are very tech-savvy! The use of technology is steadily increasing to make classrooms more efficient and promote new ways of learning. You learn how to use modern technology to enhance your teaching skills.

Progressive Reading. You learn to design reading programs across all grade levels, practice at area schools, and receive feedback from teachers and MSUM faculty to improve your skills. This continuous cycle of learning sets MSUM apart from the rest! More Experience. Teacher candidates are mentored through more than 300 hours in off-campus K-12 classrooms. Each teaching experience builds confidence and professionalism, and connects theory with practice. On-going Mentoring. The transition from student-teacher to teacher is easier at MSUM! For three years following your graduation, designated faculty mentors and a wealth of online materials continue to be available to help you get started in your career.

Upgrade Your Degree Special Education License Option The special education curriculum prepares students to teach individuals with disabilities. When you choose this option, you graduate with both an Elementary Inclusive Education Degree and a Special Education license in five years. Your advisor helps you plan your program.

Note: Candidates pursuing a special education license declare Elementary Inclusive Education as their major.

Note: The special education area of focus is declared your sophomore year with the help of an advisor.

MSUM is one of few universities in Minnesota that offer five special education licensures.

A certificate in Autism Spectrum Disorders and a minor in special education is also available through MSUM.

In addition to your elementary inclusive degree, you may earn a special education license within five years. This prepares you to teach in diverse settings and graduate qualified to apply for teaching licenses in both elementary and special education.
