ENERGY EFFICIENT BY DESIGN
ARCHITECTURE STUDIO SUMMER 2015
LONDON OBJECTIVE
The basis of this projet was to design a multi-use building with multiple stories within the given site on Canary Wharf in the business district of London. In teams of two, the building was to be designed for a creative services agency. The creative agency we designed new offices for was Square Circle. The creative design services Square Circle can provide include: interactive branding, from total brand identity to packaging design. With the location of London, in close proximity to the River Thames, the multi-purpose building was to be designed with sustainability in mind to create highly energy efficient office spaces for the client.
PROCESS The form of this building design was focused around maintaining views of the London skyline across the River Thames this new building would otherwise block. We began by utilizing the curve of the site and started massing from there. By rotating each floor plate starting from the main level we created bridging between the separate structures and open air atriums. To maximize efficiency, this building utilizes several sustainable features. In addition to the double skin facade, natural ventilation is created from the rotated floor plates and solar chimneys that surround the central core towers. Green roofing on the balconies and the roof level improve water retention for greywater collection in this design. Additionally, the CHP system and useage of photovoltaic glass on interior surfaces all support the overall sustainablility.

STUDENT DESIGN COMPETITION FALL 2014
The design of large retail stores can easily become repetitive and stagnant. Mundane aesthetics and store layouts are interchangeable from one store to the next; nothing stands out. For the Recreational Equipment Inc. flagship store in Washington, DC, these normalities are replaced with a unique interior that stands out, excites, and captivates the consumer. REI strives for an updated brand that stands out and attracts active millennials while creating a sense of community within the store. In Washington, DC, millennials are young professionals working during the day, and are dependent on technology at the convenience of their fingertips. To attract the young and active customer, the REI store design is focused on creating an experience through an engaging atmosphere. To incorporate the feeling of the outdoors while appealing to millennials, this design fuses nature and technology within the store. The overall design is focused on the concept of nature and technology coexisting, and how the two have influences on each other.
INSPIRATION
WASHINGTON, D.C. OBJECTIVE
This design was a submission for the PAVE design competition during the Fall of 2014. As part of the competition, we were to design a flagship store for REI, to reestablish the REI brand to appeal to the tech-savvy millenial customer. This design incorporates a balance between technology and nature to meet the modern standards, yet maintains a connection to the outdoors. The urban planning of the Washington D.C. area inspired the space planning and store layout of this design. Circulation paths through the different shops within the store derived from the map of the city’s streets. Just as the structured street planning transitions into greenspace with naturally curving pathways, the rigid lines beginning from the exterior transition to a more natural path at the back of the store.

LOFT OBJECTIVE
Design a residence for a family that is in some way different than your own. This residence was designed for Jennifer and Victoria, and their adopted twins Christopher and Katherine. Jennifer works as an art therapist and wanted a space in her home to expand her own business for private client sessions. Katherine is a lawyer and wanted a space to work at home on an as needed basis. The concept of folding was used to transition from a place of a specific use to the next creating open multi-use spaces.
WORKPLACE DESIGN
INTERIOR DESIGN STUDIO FALL 2015
CINCINNATI OBJECTIVE
Design a new office space for a design firm of your choosing, and interview that firm to help you have a better undertanding of their current workspace. Find out what the firm would want, and what they would need, as well as the culture of the firm as a whole. The new office design is a hypothetical expansion of the firm in size and location. The site is located in the city of Cincinnati at The EDGE building on Culver Street.
CONCEPT
In some forms of nature, the color we see consists of layers in the symmetrical structure, rather than actual pigments. The structure within the makeup of their feathers is pigmented brown, but the layers of multiple geometries refract light at different angles, giving the peacock its bright colors. From this type of coloration, I took the ideas of symmetry, evidence of structure, and layers of color to translate this conceptual idea into my three dimensional office space.

INTERIOR DESIGN CAPSTONE STUDIO SPRING 2016
CLEVELAND OBJECTIVE
For the final project in the Interior Design curriculum, the Interior Design Capstone studio is open for each student to create their own project based on a problem in today’s world, and design the interior spaces of the solution to that problem.
PROBLEM
The problem today is that there is a void in usable workspace open to the public in our current society. Within the next 10 years, millenials will take up 75% of the workforce. Those millenials who are traveling for work with not continue to be enticed by hotels of today. A place to do work outside of work is currently limited to a library or coffee shop, and the transformative hotel lobby will fill the void for public work space. The hotel lobby will provide a co-working space with an upbeat environment in a public setting as an alternative.
CONCEPT
The basis of this design will be focused on the surrounding site in relationship to the building and how the user travels to and interacts within the lobby spaces. Every user of the public hotel lobby will be traveling from a different place and meeting at Settler’s Pointe as the destination. My concept is the community that is created by way of the various modes of transportation from the surrounding site used to come together. In the surrounding site of the lobby and hotel buildings [shaded in grey] three modes of transportation are in close proximity to the building. Inspiration was drawn from transportation by boat on the Cuyahoga River, by train on the railroad, and by car from the surrounding streets.

BRANDING The logo design was inspired by a railroad crossing sign. Railroad crossing signs are placed at the intersection of two paths crossing: vehicular traffic, and the path of a train. Similarly, the paths that people take to come to this hotel all meet at Settler’s Pointe as the destination, X marking the spot. The different users of the transformative hotel lobby are all coming from different places, but their paths cross at Settler’s Pointe, whether they be a local user, or an out-of-town guest staying at the connecting hotel.

FURNITURE
OBJECTIVE
Design a seating unit for at least two people using the knowledge and appreciation for the design-build process, utilizing the skills and techniques learned on tools and machines in the woodshop.
A SEATING UNIT FOR TWO
With an appreciation for the beauty in the flaws of a natural material like wood, I designed this furniture piece, with the intent of finding a piece of wood with a bark inclusion. The piece of wood I found was this 2 piece of solid cherry with a bark inclusion part way down the center of the seating unit horizontally. Golden rectangles were used to create the finished size of the seat, and the pattern of the stainless steel inlays.
