Canton

Rough Creek Watershed

Blue Ridge Parkway This 469-mile scenic drive is a unit of the National Park Service and can be accessed just outside of Canton where the Parkway intersects with U.S. 276 and with N.C. 209.

Canton Recreation Park Municipal park along the Pigeon River features walking trail, picnic areas, grills, outdoor pool, tennis courts and more. 1.5-mile riverwalk; benches line the trail for those looking to relax. Penland Drive. www.cantonnc.com.

Cold Mountain The mountain that Charles Frazier used to name his acclaimed novel, and the title of the subsequent movie is in Haywood County, located outside Canton. Hiking the mountain requires a map and an entire day, but you can view it by following N.C. 110 out of Canton until it intersects with U.S. 276. Turn left on U.S. 276 until you hit the Blue Ridge Parkway. The Cold Mountain overlook is right at the U.S. 276-Parkway intersection.

Mt. Pisgah This mountain is visible from the area around Canton. Located at Milepost 408.6 on the Blue Ridge Parkway, a short, strenuous hike leads to a viewing platform with 360-degree views. Also a hotel, restaurant and campground located nearby.

An 830-acre preserve with a 10-mile mountain bike trail. The trail system consists of three loops. Directions: From Waynesville, head east on I-40 toward Asheville. Get off at exit 33 and make a right at the end of the exit ramp. Make a right again onto Beaverdam Road. (It will take you back under the Interstate.) Turn left onto Rice Cove Road. Turn right on Rough Water Plant Road. When the road forks, go left onto a narrow paved road that leads to the old water processing plant.

Parham Park Located on Soco Road in Maggie Valley, minipark has a shelter and provides handicapped-accessible fishing in Jonathan Creek. Also, the town’s 3.7-mile walking path goes through the park. Soco Falls Gorgeous, isolated waterfall with a viewing deck. Take U.S. 19 from Maggie Valley toward Blue Ridge Parkway. Continue past Parkway toward Cherokee 1.5 miles to a pull-off on left side of road. A small blue sign points the way to the falls, which are a half-mile hike on a steep trail that begins at the break in the guardrail.

Bridal Veil Falls

Boogerman Trail

2.5 miles east of Highlands on U.S. 64. The 120-foot falls are visible from the highway.

Length: 4.2 miles Rating: Easy It is best to do this trail as a day hike from Cataloochee Campground, a 7.5-mile roundtrip. Directions: Take exit 20 off I-40 (Cove Creek) and travel west to U.S. 276, turn right on Cove Creek road. Stay on Cove Creek Road for 12 miles. This will take you 2 miles beyond park boundary. Trail will be on the left.

Cullasaja Falls On U.S. 64, 11 miles east of Franklin, the 250-foot falls are visible from the road.

Dry Falls Located near U.S. 64, 3.5 miles west from Highlands, 16.5 miles from Franklin. Paved walkway leads to falls from parking area. Walk underneath the 75-foot falls.

Toxaway Falls U.S. 64 passes right over the 125-foot falls. From Sapphire, drive north on U.S. 64 for two miles. Look for a large masonry bridge at the base of a hill and the dam to the left. Cross the bridge and park in the graveled area on the left side. Carefully cross U.S. 64 to glimpse the falls on the south side.

Caldwell Fork Trail Length: 5.1 miles Rating: Easy This moderate lower creek trail gains 1,300 feet in elevation. Directions: Take exit 20 off I-40 (Cove Creek) and travel west on U.S. 276 turn right on Cove Creek road. Stay on Cove Creek Road for 12 miles. Trail will be on the left.

Max Patch Mountain (4,629 feet)

Take U.S. 64 east to Whitewater Road. The falls are located 10 miles south on Whitewater Road, near the NC-SC state line. At 411 feet, Whitewater Falls are the highest in Eastern America.

Length: 300-foot climb Rating: Easy. Exit 7 off Interstate 40. Beautiful grassy bald with great views. Follow U.S.FS trail Max Patch Bald summit. Return via AT (right on AT) to road, or leave shuttle car at USFS parking area and continue driving on Max Patch Road for 3.6 miles to Lemon Gap on state line and park. Follow AT south for 6.0 miles to summit of Max Patch and down USFS trail to car.

Whitewater Falls

Take U.S. 276 South approximately 35 miles. Parking area is well marked on east side of highway. The 85foot falls are visible from the road.

Length: 3.2 miles Rating: Easy This is a popular family hike because of its beauty and ease. Directions: This trail begins at the Graveyard Fields Overlook on the Blue Ridge Parkway. From the U.S. Highway 276 junction with the parkway, turn left or south on the Parkway and continue to milepost 418.8 (about 6 miles).

Graveyard Ridge Trail Length: 3.4 miles Rating: Moderate There are outstanding views of Graveyard Fields and visibility to S.C. on clear days. Directions: Walk the Graveyard Fields Trail counterclockwise until intersecting the Graveyard Ridge Trail.

Little Cataloochee Trail

The elk herd is a popular attraction in the Cataloochee Valley area of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Length: 5 miles Rating: Moderate This moderate lowland trail gains only 900 feet in over 5 miles. Directions: The trailheads are at Palmer Creek, about 1 mile from the end of the paved section of Cataloochee Road at the Cataloochee Horse Camp, and at a signed gate along the gravel Cataloochee-Big Creek Road

Little Sam Trail

Big Fork Ridge Trail

Length: 4.0 miles Rating: Moderate Start from Black Balsam parking area. Take the Flat Creek Trail out of the southern end of the parking lot. After approximately one mile, turn right (uphill) on the Little Sam Trail. Both of these trails dead-end into the Mountains to Sea Trail. Turn left. At the junction with Art Loeb Trail, bear left (uphill) for a steep climb before leveling out and coming to Black Balsam Road. Follow the road back to the parking area. Directions: Take the Blue Ridge Parkway to mile marker 420. Turn into Black Balsam parking area at FR 816.

Length: 3.0 miles Rating: Strenuous This low ridge trail links Caldwell Fork and Rough Fork in the middle of Cataloochee Valley. Crossing the low ridge separating these two parallel creeks and trails, you will hike a moderate, 3-mile stretch. Directions: Take exit 20 off I-40 (Cove Creek) and travel west on NC 276 turn right on Cove Creek road. Stay on Cove Creek Road for 12 miles. Trail will be on the left.

Art Loeb Trail Length: 12.3 miles Rating: Strenuous The Art Loeb Trail is 30.1 miles long. It begins at the Davidson River and climbs steeply to Shut-in Ridge. Directions: Go 0.2 mile south of Pisgah District Ranger Station on U.S. 276 and turn onto the road to Davidson River Campground. Park in the Art Loeb Trailhead parking lot. The other end of this section is at Gloucester Gap on FS Road 471, where overnight parking is not recommended.

Art Loeb Trail Section 2 Length: 7.2 miles Rating: Strenuous From Gloucester Gap the trail climbs to Pilot Mountain, a former fire tower site with a 360-degree view. In mid-May the north side of Pilot Mountain is abloom with pinkshell azalea. Directions: Start from Gloucester Gap, which is 4.5 miles west of the State Fish Hatchery on FS Road 475. (It is not recommended to leave cars overnight here.)

Cataloochee Divide Trail (5,540 feet) Length: 14 miles Rating: Strenuous Cove Creek Road off U.S. 276 North. 1,500-foot climb to Hemphill Bald, an open pasture area with beautiful vistas. You may opt to station shuttle car at termination of Paulâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Gap Trail, reducing walking distance to 11.5 miles. Hiking: Take trail on left (SW); follow well-defined trail to Hemphill Bald (7 miles) or beyond.

Cherry Ridge Trail Length: 1.0 miles Rating: Strenuous This trail is fairly steep and connects to Harmon Den and Max Patch. The grassy ridges of Max Patch Mountain near the Tennessee state line crown the area. Trails combined with forest service roads to provide loop opportunities. Directions: Take Harmon Den Exit off I-40 near the NC/TN state line. Head northeast on FR 148 (Cold Springs Road) about 3 miles to Harmon Den parking area on the left. Parking for trailers is also available at lower junction of FR 148 and 3526.

Waynesville US 276 Loop Directions: US 23/74 to Exit 102A. Follow Russ Avenue to Main Street. Make a right onto Main Street into downtown Waynesville. Left onto Pigeon Street, which is US 276 South. Follow through light at NC 110 intersection. Continue to Blue Ridge Parkway entrance. Make left onto Blue Ridge Parkway. Exit Parkway at Balsam Gap. Points of Interest: Downtown Waynesville features shopping, art galleries, cafés, and fine dining. Historic Frog Level is a revitalized arts district full of more galleries and antique shops. The North Carolina Museum of Handicrafts at the Shelton House and the Haywood Arts Regional Theater is located on Pigeon Street. Cold Mountain is located to the right of US 276 in Bethel. The Cruso Community Center is located on US 276.

Canton/Clyde NC 215 Loop Directions: US 23/74 to Exit 106. Follow US 19/23/74 through Clyde. Enter Canton. Stay straight onto Main Street. Make hard left onto Park Street. Make left onto NC 215.
