Fantastic Beasts of Appalachia
Viewing the Elk Most elk are located in the Cataloochee Valley area in the southeastern section of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. As the elk have begun to migrate out of the park area you can frequently see elk in and around Maggie Valley.
CALVING SEASON: LATE SPRING Most of the calves in Cataloochee are born in June. The cows hide their calves in the high grass. For safety and to avoid disturbing the calves, visitors should stay out of the fields. Cows can be aggressive in protecting their young. By late June, visitors can often see the calves up and moving with the herd.
GROWING SEASON: SUMMER The herd can often be seen grazing in the fields. Bulls are "in velvet," rapidly growing new antlers. The calves are growing quickly and will gain as much as 140 pounds by winter.
THE RUT: FALL The mating season for elk is called the rut, which occurs from mid-September through the end of October. Large bulls bugle and fight for domination and the right to breed with the cows. This can be a dangerous time for visitors as the bulls can be aggressive with unpredictable behavior. For your protection, please remain on the roadway and near your vehicle during the rut.
SAFETY When elk are present, federal regulations require that you remain at least 150 feet away and at a distance that does not disturb them. Failure to do so can result in fines and/or arrest.

SAM’S KNOB TRAIL Length: 2.2 miles; Rating: Moderate Start from Black Balsam parking area near Milepost 420 on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Begin the hike on the trail behind the sign board to the right of the pit toilets. It's called the Sam Knob Summit trail and it may be signed; in the past the sign read “To Sam Knob Summit”. The trail crosses the meadow, and reaches an intersection with the Sam Knob trail on the other side. Ironically, the Sam Knob Summit trail ends here; turn right here to go toward the summit.
ROUGH CREEK WATERSHED An 830-acre preserve with a 10-mile mountain bike trail. The trail system consists of three loops. Directions: From Waynesville, head east on I-40 toward Asheville. Get off at exit 33 and make a right at the end of the exit ramp. Make a right again onto Beaverdam Road. (It will take you back under the Interstate.) Turn left onto Rice Cove Road. Turn right on Rough Water Plant Road. When the road forks, go left onto a narrow paved road that leads to the old water processing plant.

With more than 800 miles of trails in the nearby Great Smoky Mountains National Park and hundreds of miles more in the Nantahala and Pisgah National Forests and the Shining Rock Wilderness Area, Haywood County is a hiker’s paradise. Many winter days have temperatures in the high 50s, and with all the leaves gone from the trees, every winter hike offers views that just don’t exist during the more popular summer and fall seasons. Whether it’s the popular Sams Knob hike in Shining Rock or a section of the Appalachian Trail in the GSMNP, getting outdoors in winter can be an exhilarating experience.

GATEWAY TO THE SMOKIES HALF MARATHON AND 4-MILER May 6, This scenic race begins on Main Street in Waynesville and finishes in the historic Frog Level district. The race name comes from Waynesville’s reputation as the principal entryway to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The 4-Miler is a new addition this year. gatewaytothesmokies.com.

BLUE RIDGE BREAKAWAY August 19, The Blue Ridge includes a variety of routes — including approximately 30 miles on the Blue Ridge Parkway — specifically designed for riders of all skill levels. Beginners and avid cyclists alike will find challenging rides to meet their individual needs. haywoodchamber.com/events.
BETHEL HALF MARATHON AND 5K October 14, The half marathon and 5K races run through the Bethel community south of Canton. The race is on the second Saturday of October every year so fall colors on the trees as you run through the rolling farmlands along the Pigeon River. The cool weather makes this a particularly inviting race event. bethelrural.com.
will pass by numerous farms as you loop back via Lovejoy Road and all too soon find yourself back at Canton’s Rec Park. Ride begins at the Canton Recreation Park on Penland Sreet/N.C. 215 in Canton. Parking, sheltered picnic tables, and restrooms available. (29.4 miles, for advanced beginner and above)
COLD MOUNTAIN LOOP This route lets your legs warm up during the ride out the Pigeon River Valley and past Lake Logan for a long, classic climb to stunning views from the Blue Ridge Parkway. Twelve miles on the Parkway will reveal some of the most beautiful sights in our region. As you drop sharply away from the Parkway on U.S. 276, you will understand why you ascended from the Lake Logan side. Pedal through the Cruso community and along the East Fork of the Pigeon River for many of the miles back to your starting point. Park at the Blue Demon Ball Park of the Bethel Middle School on Poindexter Road/N.C. 215 on the north side of the field — bathrooms in building near walking track and bleachers. (44.7 miles, strong intermediate and above)
MT. PISGAH This sister route to the Cold Mountain Loop also has a classic climb to fabulous views from the Blue Ridge Parkway. Reward yourself with a meal or a snack — and yet another great view — at the Pisgah Inn. Check your brakes before the steep, technical drop into the Cruso area and a journey that continues beside the East Fork of the Pigeon River. The valley miles will get the snap back into your legs as your ride draws to a close. Ride begins at the Canton Recreation Park on Penland Street / N.C. 215 in Canton. (47.1 miles, for strong intermediate and above)
HYDER MOUNTAIN LOOP Head into the country on a well-shouldered road, passing by the Pigeon River. Once over Interstate 40 continue down the river valley until it is time to climb Hyder Mountain. Most of the climb is conquered in the first half-mile with views that will reward your effort. Soon enough you’re on the twisting descent to another crossing of the Pigeon River. Then it’s just a left turn and a right turn back to your bike carrier. Ride begins at Long’s Chapel United Methodist Church on Old Clyde Road (N.C. 209) in Lake Junaluska. Park in the gravel area next to the Fire Department across from the church. (9.9 miles, for intermediate and above)
COLEMAN MOUNTAIN-PANTHER CREEK LOOP A wonderful bicycle ride loop in the northwestern end of the county. Begin at Sorrell’s Store, a “Bike Outpost,” in Jonathan Valley. Climb over Coleman Mountain before descending to the Pigeon River. As you follow the river into the Panther Creek community, your road follows the long gone footprints of the large felines once known as “painters.” The woods for the next 10-plus miles are lightly populated and offer long-range views, especially when the leaves are off the trees. Soon enough you will be back in Jonathan Valley to enjoy the wide valley view on the way back to Sorrell’s Store. Ride begins at Sorrell’s Marathon gas station and store, which welcomes riders, at 3796 Jonathan Creek Road (also U.S. 276).
Swinging for the Mountains Golfing in the mountains is both challenging and satisfying, providing scenic rewards unmatched at any other location in the country. "WORKING TO PROTECT AND IMPROVE OUR WATER RESOURCES FOR EVERYONE” All water in Haywood County originates in Haywood County. That gives the county’s residents and visitors sole responsibility for stewardship of our waterways.
Haywood Waterways invites you to become stewards of clean water. Join an award winning organization that strives to protect and improve Haywood County’s rivers, streams, and lakes through education, community engagement, partnering with likeminded organizations, and landowner stewardship. Our mission is to protect and conserve our water resources by reducing non-point pollution sources. We are known by local government and community leaders as a valuable resource and credible advisor on resolving water resource issues. We help willing landowners protect their land, reduce soil erosion, and improve our streams. We help solve problems that affect the economy, agriculture, drinking water, recreation, and wildlife."
