Urban Living Spaces

LITTLE ITALY SOUTH A. EVANS // 2014 DESIGN PORTFOLIO

The NEW COMMUNITY LIVING UNITS

4

Objective- Design a site plan & building to meet the needs of the ‘client’, (HG Fenton), and those of the future pedestrian plaza on Date St. between India & Columbia. Design should also respond to the already proposed residential tower on the North of the plaza. Decide how to use or not use the existing historical house on site and accommodate for the needs of the Princess Pub bordering the building site. The design should be dense but, diverse and feel spacious. This was a 10 week project that required weekly meetings with our instructor and the representative from HG Fenton. Location- South West corner of Date St. & Columbia St. in Little Italy San Diego, Ca. LOT SIZE: 100’ x 50’ REQUIRED PROGRAM: 1 Ground Level of Commercial Space with 4 Upper Levels of Residential Space fitting 24 units total. Solution- utilize as much space as possible to fit 24 units, build on a grid to accommodate micro living units, create a sense of life that interacts w/the plaza with semi transparent skins that also take advantage of the winds, build over house w/ accented angles & exposed structure.

What to do with the existing house...

Site Analysis and Response...

OPTION 1: Moving Building Out of Site

B

C

A

SITE

SITE

Diagram A: Pedestrian Circulation

The existing house can be moved off site but still utilized by the overall area design by A) putting on top of Princess Pub as a public space, B)directly in the middle of the site as an attraction or C) to the end of the plaza also as a main attraction. The issue with ‘A’ is the structure that would be needed to support it on the roof. The issue with ‘B’ and ‘C’ is that the circulation for the plaza could be effected negatively.

N

Pedestrian traffic move heavily along India Street and conjests at the corners of India and Date Street as gathering spaces. The gathering aspects ad life to the area but, can move down into the proposed plaza.

Diagram B: Vehicular Circulation

N

As a major intersection this area gets high amounts of car traffic’ the majority on India St. Peak hours in the evening or weekend nights contribute to conjestion from all directions. The plaza could aleviate this issue & divert traffic.

OPTION 3: Raising House On Top Of or In New Building

6

TAKES LIMITED RESIDENTIAL SPACE

In option 3 the house can be moved to either A) somewhere within the facade or interior of the new building or B) on to the roof of the overall building. With either option the existing house will be a private amenity for the apartment residents and will be an eye catching feature for viewers (for better or worse).

(-) SOLUTION??

Date St. can easily turn into a public plaza absorbing and continuing the energy from the intersection gathering spaces. The roofs of the site and surrounding buildlings offer as great gardens both private & public.

Diagram F: Building Height Considerations Providing Gardens to Residents; thinking of future needs 1-Residents have to pay 2- No one below knows how great this is; some how needs to be known 3- If sold in Saturday Farmer’s Market... fee for booth.

provide space on lower level for residents to set up booth, allows for others to experience the building and learn what the building is providing. (niche in entrance, build actual small market?); can be put into South Building & provide use for North & South.

VIE

HEIGHT RESTRICTION

With option ‘2A’ the existing house will be built around by the new apartments. The house can be moved to any side of the site at ground level and incorporated into the new design. With option ‘2B’ the house can be kept at ground level but built around completely and act as an interior feature to the new design. The issue for both options is not only the influence of the appearance on the new design but, the physical connection or lack of between the existing house and new building.

Diagram D: Spaces to be Redeveloped & Desired Pedestrian Patterns

The farmer’s market every Saturday takes up Date St. for several blocks while India stays open for vehicular traffic; cars move slow and seem to be submissive to the pedestrian. India is closed for larger events (i.e. Art Walk).

Views from the proposed building on the North of Date St. will overlook not only the new plaza but, must take advantage of the downtown view for value and will be looking onto the roofs of the new building and Princess pub; meaning the roofs need to be developed & eye pleasing.

Site Plan * this plan was made with the intent to move the house on to the neighboring building. While the final actually builds around the house in its current location, the moves to redesign roofs still stayed part of the final design. 25’

Plaza Design Considerations...

Diagram A: Existing Tree Placement

Potted plants to keep the common theme of Little Italy and frame spaces.

Tree moved to center front of the plaza; landmark feature for passer by-ers, breaks up space, able to view from steps and plaza.

House on Princess Pub roof optional but, a public garden regardless to utilize space, respond to surrounding views and ad to the atmosphere of a busy plaza.

Steps at beginning of plaza to be a meeting spot, seating for show, build up to rest of plaza. Restaurants and weekly markets will bring people up.

Water feature Non-fruiting Olive added to front of Trees as requestNorth Building to ed. frame large lobby & public entrance.

EV IDEA PAVILION A. EVANS // 2014 DESIGN PORTFOLIO

SPACES for the PEOPLE & IDEAS of EAST VILLAGE

12

Objective- locate a site to create a pavilion that caters to the residents of the area and ultimately explore the idea of civic engagement. Location- IDEA District of East Village in Downtown San Diego. The current parking lot on 8th Ave between Market and Island. Process & Concept- The site chosen is located in a buffer space that connects two popular spots in the area and is not being used to it’s full potential. The concept is driven by the energy, movement and ideas circling around (fitting for the IDEA district). Solution- By recognizing that whether as a parking lot or an open park, the site is really used as shortcut for users to get from point A to point B. So the final design is meant to not only make walking through or by pleasant but, to bring users in and engage them and then send them back on their way. The IDEA Pavilion is a sort of oasis for the people of East Village. It provides a park, gardens to tend and enjoy, display spaces to express the ideas and creations coming from East Village, open space for markets and concerts, intimate spaces to enjoy a book, gathering spaces for groups and paths to enjoy on a walk. The ramp of gardens can have displays and seating and create a sense of mystery from the outside to invite users in to see what is happening. The curved arches create an energy for the area and create a visual that is not used in the surrounding areas.

SHAPING SPACES w/ LIGHT for REVITALIZATION

Objective- design a DE-constructable installation that will liberate the site.

Team : Ashley Evans, Kevin Leon & Whitney McCall

Site- East Village San Diego. Gated empty lot on 13th between G and F St. Process & Concept- the negative factors around the site bring forward an issue of safety for users. After re-purposing the existing buildings as artist spaces the concept of the installation is a star-y night. Solution- The lights are hung at varying heights with a gradient density to lead users into the site. The spaces are illuminated, engaging, adaptable and safe. The lighting creates a star lit night that is not present in downtown. CONNECTION DETAIL

City Hall Site & Building Design: Ashley Evans

18

Renderings by: Ashley Evans, assisted by Brandon Martella

Objective- Design a new civic center for the embarcadero; with plaza, maritime museum & city hall. Location- San Diego, Ca. Along harbor at PCH and Harbor Drive on vacant military parking lot. Process & Concept- By recognizing the users should be approaching each element of the master plan differently a system of paths was put in. Strait and forward paths along the city hall half to encourage movement and visibility. While zig-zag paths with intimate stops are on the museum side to promote a sense of intimacy and humility when approaching the museum. The city hall embraces a concept of openness with security. Solution- The paths set in shaped the buildings. The City Hall expressing a familiar form that stands strong and bold. The entire building is raised to offer more security and keep people from wandering in without purpose. The program with in is broken up to allow light in and spaces for workers to enjoy. The gaps between programs also offers a silhouette that gives more visibility to the harbor for surrounding high rises. The main chambers cantilever out as a gesture to the public to interact not only with the building but, with city issues in town hall meetings.

CULINARY SCHOOL FUNCTION EXPRESSED through STRUCTURE

A. EVANS // 2014 DESIGN PORTFOLIO

Design Team: Ashley Evans, Francisco Nunez & Melissa Vaughn

24

Objective- explore & express steel construction in a new Culinary School for San Diego Location- East Village, Downtown San Diego. Corner of 14th and Market. Process & Concept- By stacking the needed program based on heat generation, a system for natural air ventilation can be put into place. The concept is driven by a continuation; of program, of people through space, and ultimately structure. Solution- The form molds into the spaces to use natural ventilation to move heat up and out of building. The core and punctures through the building work with a system of operable windows to allow air in and out of spaces. The steel is expressed as a continuous flow of support through out the building acting not only as support but, as a skin to the building. Overall the design is meant to be an expression of the familiar phrase, “form follows function. The final design will intrigue the public through the expression of a steel structure that is both familiar and foreign form at the same time.

// STUDIO THEME //

Objective- research a develop the term ‘nature’ and create a nature center on a challenging site (steep slope and disconnected from main drive).

NATURE CENTER

Location- Balboa Park, San Diego, Ca. Off of Zoo Blvd, across from the Main Prado Drive; along a steep hillside that borders the Rose Gardens.

RECONNECTING PEOPLE and SITE

Solution- The final design is created by a ripple affect that takes circulation down the hillside in a curved covered path. The height of the building attracts visitors to cross the street. The paths will hold galleries and learnings centers that connect users to nature through digital media. The lighting effects created by the curved form of the roof and paths use shadows to give a sense of direction to the long spaces; urging users down the hill and influencing their way-finding through the space.

28

C h a l l e n g e s

Process & Concept- The site is located at the end of an axis that is created on Prado Dr. Each point on the axis is celebrated with some sort of active site or view. The excepted end is the fountain on the West side of Park, the rose garden is not recognized because there is no clear indication to cross the street. The concept of the Nature Center is a ripple affect created by a “pin point”.

Stopping Points While on the Summer Abroad: Greece 2011 I took both of these pictures that captured two very memorable moments with friends.1- realizing we had a million stairs to climb to get to our hotel after the longest day, all we could do is laugh and sit at the bottom for about 30 minutes. 2- getting lost in Santorini, only to realize we were on the donkey trail and they come out of no where; if you are not carefully pressed against a wall you will get ran over.

These photos are part of series from a last minute trip to the Grand Canyon last spring. We stopped off in Antelope valley and we were able to take the tour in to capture these beautiful rock formations. The caves are mostly known for the light beams but, what really stood out to me were the contrasts in color that the sunlight created between the grooves of the rocks.
