INTRODUCTION Building in an environmentally friendly manner has numerous advantages, in addition to being extremely rewarding and cost-effective. Not only will you be helping to protect the environment, but you will also benefit from lower bills, increased energy efficiency, and less maintenance over time. With so much information and assistance available, it is now easier than ever to build a greener, more energy-efficient home. Being environmentally conscious is essential. Understanding your lifestyle needs allows you to avoid waste and research appropriate products. Green can mean various things to different people. But in today's environment, planning a sustainable build always makes good economic sense.

4 www.ashleyrosesacredspaces.com

The first step in Conscious living is being mindful how you start your day. Your morning routine is vital for how your day will go. Try some of these to get your day started and align the rest of your day and life.

5 www.ashleyrosesacredspaces.com

AT HOME To many of us, our home is a place where we have a great deal of control over our lives and routines. We can make a significant difference in our environmental impact at home by changing how we live and what we buy. It's an investment for those who own their own home. However, many of the suggestions in the following sections are applicable even if you live at home, are a student, or live in rented housing. They contain a wealth of information that may be useful in informing those with whom you live about the issues.

KITCHEN APPLIANCES The kitchen is full of appliances that use energy or water so think about how you use them, and when you need to replace them buy the most energy, and water, efficient model possible. When using your washing machine using a 40°C wash cycle rather than 60°C means you use a third less electricity. Reduce the wash to a 30°C cycle and the amount of electricity saved (not to mention money) will be even higher. Most washing powders work just as effectively at lower temperatures. Only run the machine when you have a full load, or use the half load or economy settings. If you have a dishwasher run it only when it is full.

6 www.ashleyrosesacredspaces.com

HOME ENTERTAINMENT When buying a new TV, as with any other electrical appliance, find out how much energy it uses before you buy. Taking long term running costs into your buying equation, makes sense. Look for ‘Energy Efficiency’ labels and, when you get it home, don’t leave it on standby.

HAND WASH OR DISHWASHER? In many homes, a dishwasher is now considered an essential item. To some, they are seen as a luxury item, unnecessary, or an environmental no-no. But is it actually greener to use a dishwasher than to wash up by hand? In terms of water, dishwashers are now much more efficient, and when used to wash a full 12 place setting, use three or four times less water than washing the same amount by hand. Three things to keep in mind: Run the dishwasher only when fully loaded. Scrape your plates first – but don’t be tempted to rinse them under the tap. Choose an eco-setting or lower temperature, if available.

WATER

Conserving water isn’t hard. It’s all about the little, everyday things. Here are a few tips to help you save more water at home: 1. Turn off the tap when it’s not in use. 2. Soak your dishes in warm water first. 3. Run your dishwasher and laundry only when its full. 4. Cut those long showers short. 5. Use energy-efficient, water-saving devices. 6. Use a water softener to tackle hard water problems. 7. Fix plumbing leaks 8. Go easy on your sprinklers and gardening hose. 9. Use drip irrigation to water your plants. 10. Reuse water for landscape gardens.

7 www.ashleyrosesacredspaces.com

FRIDGES AND FREEZERS If you have an old (over 10 years) fridge or freezer, it could be cost effective to replace it, as energy efficiency has improved 25% since 1990. But don’t be tempted to keep your old appliance as a “second fridge/freezer”. All fridges and freezers sold are required by law to carry the Energy Label, which rates their efficiency in energy use. Fridges and freezers account for 17% of all domestic energy used and choosing an efficient model will save on running costs. The most efficient models carry the A++ grade, the least efficient G. Larger ones generally use more electricity than smaller ones, and chest freezers are slightly more energy efficient than upright ones.

LIGHTING Below are a few tips worth thinking about even if you are in rented accommodation: 1. Install low energy bulbs of the correct light output. 2. Turn off lights when not in use, unless they are safety lights. 3. The cheapest form of light is daylight so maximize it where you can. 4. Fluorescent tubes are energy efficient, and illuminate the safest light in kitchens.

FURNITURE AND FURNISHING Wood is only a renewable material if more trees are planted. Using reclaimed wood reduces the waste of resources and the environmental problems caused by throwing out good wood, so look for businesses and projects which reclaim and use wood. Several furniture manufacturing businesses use reclaimed or locally produced timber, and you may also find local craftspeople who use environment-friendly materials. Buying second-hand is environment-friendly – sometimes very good quality furniture goes for reasonable prices at local auctions, vintage shops, and consignment shops try Goodwill or Habitat for Humanity!

WOOL

JUTE

Natural fibers have a less environmental impact than synthetic fibers because they do not use chemicals that much during the manufacturing process.

SYNTHETIC

10 www.ashleyrosesacredspaces.com

OAK WOOD

A FEW TIPS FOR YOUR 3. Avoid furniture composed of MDF or Particleboard. These are made from compressed shavings or sawdust held together by synthetic resins, binders and glues. One of the ingredients often found in these adhesives is formaldehyde, which can cause wheezing, nausea, and severe allergic reactions and is known to cause cancer in animals.

4. Skip the flame retardants, go organic. Standard upholstered goods are made from polyurethane foam (poly-foam) wrapped in dacron. Both materials are man-made and petroleum-based. They contain isocyanates and polyols that are highly flammable and are often treated with flame-retardant chemicals to reduce combustibility. The chemicals in these flame retardants have been linked to a wide range of health problems such as impaired fertility and IQ and developmental problems in children.
