You may have caught a glimpse of it flipping through your TV channels, and you’ve most likely heard the name of the newest, and craziest fitness trend to hit the market in the last few years. I am referring of course, to CrossFit, a combination of Olympic weightlifting, sprinting, and gymnastic routines designed to provide people with a broad and general fitness. CrossFit is the brainchild of Greg Glassman, who has been developing and promoting his workout regime over the last few decades. Today, there are more than 6,000 CrossFit gyms worldwide, and over 35,000 certified trainers. CrossFit defines it’s program as a “constantly varied, high intensity, functional movement” aimed at providing the user with improved fitness and physical preparedness for
any
situation.
A
CrossFit
workout is typically shorter than a traditional
workout,
usually
topping at 30 minutes. This is due to the extremely high intensity, and requirement of a high level of physical exertion. Typical CrossFit workouts include exercises such as deadlifts, pull-ups, tire flipping, sprinting, as well as rope climbing and kettle bells, and many more.
A variation of these exercises are combined into routines known as “WOD’s”, or “Workout’s of the Day” and are performed together in a group at your local CrossFit “Box”, a specially designed fitness facility catering to all the needs of an avid CrossFitter. Perhaps the most popular of these WOD’s is the “Fran WOD” which calls for three rounds of 21-15-9 repetitions of 95-lb barbell thrusters and pull-ups for time. This means the participant is to perform 21 thrusters and pull-ups, then 15 thrusters and pull-ups, and finally 9 thrusters and pull-ups, all as fast as you possibly can. To add to the excitement and motivation, each participant’s times and or scores are recorded for each WOD, encouraging friendly competition a mongst your peers, as well as motivating you to improve in the future. The camaraderie experienced while pushing yourself to your absolute limit along with the friends or strangers around you is unparalleled in any other fitness program.
CrossFit is not only a workout program, it is an entire community of athletes all sharing the same goals and desires; to become extremely fit, and have fun doing it. There are numerous websites and forums online to provide information on workouts, and meal plans, and many people willing to help should you have any questions.
The emergence of such a strong community and large fan base led to an immense sponsoring campaign by Reebok, as they have committed to not only marketing and promoting the sport, but also introduced an entire lineup of CrossFit specific attire and footwear. In 2007, the first CrossFit games were held, its purpose to bring together the best CrossFitters in the world and put them head to head in a competition. Since the inaugural competition, the winning prize money has grown from a mere $500 to over $250,000, a testament to the increasing popularity of the sport. If history is any indication, CrossFit will continue to explode in popularity and could become a top tier fitness competition alongside events like the Ironman, or World Strongman.
Although it may seem intimidating, the sport of CrossFit is very welcoming to beginners. If you are not willing to join a local box, many of the routines can be performed within the comfort of your own home with just a few pieces of equipment. If you are interested in creating your own CrossFit workout station, you need nothing more than a few dumbbells, kettle bells, a pull-up bar and a barbell.
