How to deal with seagull problems? Whether you live in a coastal town or in an in-land urban area, seagulls can be a big problem and if they start nesting on your property then it can be pretty unpleasant to deal with.
Seagulls love towns and cities because there is always a ready supply of food scraps to keep them happy. Unfortunately the problems they bring with them include droppings, noise and aggressive behavior, especially when they start nesting and protecting their young. Once they start nesting it can be very difficult to get them to move on because even if you remove the nest, they will quickly return and build another one.
Potential Harm from Seagulls
Noise Aggressive Behaviour Guano Nesting Vehicle or Building damage Increased Maintenance & Cleaning Cost
However there are some practical things you can do. These include:
Making sure that you dispose of food scraps appropriately ensuring the seagulls can’t access it.
Don’t put out your refuse collection bags too far in advance of a collection. Seagulls are well know for tearing apart bin bags and getting at the food scraps so give them less opportunity to do this.
Use bird spikes or netting to stop them from landing and nesting. Spikes can be used on window sills, roofs and chimney stacks and netting can be used to cover the face of a building as well as the roof to stop them from landing and roosting.
Try a post and wire system. These are made of nylon and wire filaments and designed in a criss-cross pattern to cover flat roofs and ridges.
Alternatively you could use an electrical charge system which gives out a low electrical charge and causes the seagull to have a small shock and fly away. No harm will come to any bird through one of these systems or any of those outlined above.
Risks to Your Business Financial loss – You can lose customers, who could be put off from entering your business location due to the presence of these pest birds Health hazard – Seagulls are known to spread disease, which could impact your co-workers if the problem is left unresolved. Cleaning Process – Cost for maintenance and cleaning could be very high for a business to cover if there is a big problem with droppings on your property.
