Denim Plus Sketchbook

Ashlie Went Denim+

“The starting point for this Unit is D +. “The ‘D’ stands for denim, and the ‘+’ is your individual approach to fashion with a focus on a developing market, with consideration to ethics and sustainability. To build on your creative studio practice and to enhance your critical thinking you are to realise through design a marketing campaign. For example; Styling, branding, promotion ect.” Blog link- http://denimanddinosaurs.tumblr.com/ I am going to use dinosaurs in my marketing campaign. They seem to be currently featuring in a lot of high street collections but I want to avoid the cheesy and childish motifs. Instead I want to use them in a more conceptual way, by taking inspiration from rough textures, colours and unusual proportions.

Campaigns with a very animalistic feel

High contrast, lots of excitement and movement

More simple, still and reflective imagery, lots of use of negative space

London trip

On this trip I was still doing research for my old Denim and Film idea. However when looking over some of the photos I took I think I can still find inspiration from the layout and conceptual ideas, particularly from the shop window displays.

Emily has a vibrant and bubbly personality and always reflects this by what shes wearing. I gave the final pages for this a simplistic layout, as i felt that the images already had plenty of energy and should speak for themselves

Location for my photoshoot I didn’t particularly want a beach setting, but found this spot close to Boscombe pier. It has the dry rocky feel that I have been looking for. I want it to appear as if the model is an inhabitant in an arid climate and if photographed in the right way it hopefully won’t be instantly recognised as part of a beach. Will aim to avoid too much vegetation, modern conveniences and any shots of the sea in my final images. I really wanted to look at Jurassic coast locations but due to time and money constraints I think that this will work better as my final location.

Was very nervous about my photoshoot. After a last minute change of model and makeup artist, having to reschedule to a week earlier and having no sleep due to working late the night before, I was terrified that the day would be a disaster. Despite this I had a lovely day and met some wonderful new people. The make-up artist really listened and understood what I was trying to achieve and the model barely complained at all, despite the strong winds blowing everything around and making her freezing cold. The rapid changes in light and windy conditions made it difficult to capture high quality images but the photographer is very talented and worked to the best of her knowledge. It was a very long day, I am still finding sand absolutely everywhere and I’m pretty sure some of the clothes may have blown away. However I am so happy with how everything I had pictured in my head came together in real life. I am so happy to now know that I have to ability to take a concept and turn it into my first ever photo shoot. Finished the day with a delicious post shoot dinner at The Coriander. Tacos well deserved!

This outfit was difficult to shoot as the wind made it difficult to keep everything in place. The bright sunlight combined with the hood kept casting awkward shadows across the face. I wasn’t sure that the boxy skirt was going to work too well, especially since the top half was also quite bulky but i think it came together well and the slit across the side worked as a nice detail.

Since it was so windy it was perfect to play up the light fabric so that it really did almost look as if she was flying.

Promotional material i found for inspiration They all have interesting use of typography, relevant imagery or creative ways of delivering information and I hope to reference this in my final outcomes

Looking at and comparing how different effects will look when printed

How my final layouts look on InDesign

Final leaflet. I wanted to get it printed on glossy paper but the printers did not recommend as their printers can be tempermental on glossy paper and mess up the inks and colours. If I had more time I would have looked at other places to print but the deadline was approaching fast and I didn’t want to risk using another company I had no experience with due to the time constraint if something went wrong. I think it would have looked great on glossy paper, but the matt looks good too and I can always treat it as a prototype.

Final Lookbook that would be placed in store and used as promotional material. I am very happy with how the book turned out. If I had more time I would have made a second, more luxurious edition which would be hardback and with gold foiling in place of some of the marble effect.

All work ready for the final hand in I think that the second hand frames add to the slightly worn and historical feel of the project

It has been a very interesting unit and I feel that I have gained confindence in my skills and organizational abilities. I did loose focus midway through the project but I think that once the photoshoot was planned and organised my ideas propelled much more quickly. Through this i have learnt that I work much better under pressure, so for future projects I am going to set myself mini goals and deadlines so that I can maintain my creative momentum through the weeks. If i had more time and money I would have carried out more research and museum visits and looked into other shooting locations, perhaps far along the Jurassic coast, somewhere much dryer and rockier with some narrative and mystery. I also would have put more promotional material together and looked at getting larger amounts of it printed. I would have looked into printers other than UniPrint, to see if I could do more specialist and unique things with my final outcome. I definitely would have set up some prototypes of an online platform, as I feel this is something that the project is really missing. I was reluctant to use a particular brand at the start of the project. However now I can see how I would have made my life easier by doing so. It would have been easier to decide on the style of clothes, model, photography, typography and layouts if I had done so, instead of having to come up with everything myself. I feel that my campaign definitely lacks a specific personality and target market. It has been an exciting project, and different from anything I have ever done before. I think that I have a clear idea of the weaknesses I need to work on and the stregths that I can play to in future work. I have also had a lot of fun planning everything, and have made some great contacts that i would love to work with again.
