Zeitgeist An Urban Art Collective Movement Project Type : Undergraduate Architecture Thesis Program : Collaborative Workspace for Artisans and Designers Location : Chennai,India Design Studio 10: January-May 2016 Professor: Meena Kumari + Kavita Selvaraj
My Undergraduate Thesis was proposed to generate a collaborative design platform to nurture a curational vision that encompassed art forms, web-based art, fashion, graphics etc. A space was created to stich the artisans and designers from different cities promoting creative entrepreneurship. The coalition of these two communities focussed on making art viable as start-ups transforming the way we live, and create products that are environmentally and socially viable. The site proposed was the Kalakshetra Foundation located in Madras. The Government of India has recognized this 100 acre property as the melting pot of culture. An addition of a live-work-play community to the Craft Education and Research Institute at Kalakshetra A richer mix of energy will result, as two worlds will collide and this contemporary approach will enhance the relevance of this institution and reinstate Kalakshetra Foundation on the cultural map of India and the World.

PUBLIC JOURNEY: The notion of Art transforming an anonymous or neglected space into a significant place. Art can be deliberately used as an agent for regeneration and social change. The Zeitgeist Movement shines like a beacon of renewed hope and vitality. My Undergraduate Thesis presents a collective space that allows for encounters, leisure and work. Overlapping of Streets, Studios, Small Courts, Alleyways, Open Spaces, Event Spaces stimulates a diverse and complex range of experiences. The landscape is interwoven with the buildings and enables the organization of the programs on Site. Sequential Vignettes demonstrate unintentional collisions and encounters, through these connections. Programmatic, Visual, Physical and Cultural ties between the campus, surrounding community, city and world beyond are fostered by the structure. It shall encompass the following spaces: -Living Pods – Flexible Studio Spaces - Learning Spaces -Workshop Spaces, Library and Material Research laboratory. -Exhibit Space + Flea Markets.

Conceptual Render | Entry Portal | 02.30 p.m A Grafitti Entry Alleyway was proposed to promote excitement and build curiousity as one walks through an alley covered by a Pergola. Primrose Yellow painted Metal Staircase cantilevered off a Form-Finished Concrete Wall, shaded by a tinted precast Concrete Pergola distills soft light into the Space. Seasonal Art directs the eye and leads the users into a plaza, which is a conglomeration of temporal workspaces + exhibits + pop-ups. The streets sprawl between the activities and run along interactive building facade.
Conceptual Render | Transformer Workspace | 04.30 p.m Each floorplate is a social magic carpet and it continues in the next to become one of the segments of the trajectory. The Workspace has an adaptable layout that serves three functions namely 1. Visual Connectivity between levels 2. Punctuate informal spaces through a series of workspaces 3. Entangling of cross disciplines

Re-Inventing Ritchie
Transforming Urban Scenarios Project Type : Urban Design Program : Adaptive Re-use of the Upper Floors to re-invent electronic marts Location : Chennai,India Design Studio 9: July - November 2015 Professor: Sita Lakshmi + Biju Kuriakose
The goal of the studio was to create design interventions which are derived through unique perspectives of the city and architecture both as universal and for the given context. The Site is identified by its existing impact on the context and the intent is justified. Further, the intervention could transform the given urban context either by accentuating the existing character or by introducing a new character to further increase its significance. The character envisaging is done at the micro and macro scale. The nature of design choices can be transformative and forward looking and not purely deterministic or reactive for an existing issue.
Photographic Documentation of Ritchie Street: - Active Ground Floors - Dilapidated First, Second & Third Floors
Conceptual designs underwent a series of practical applications in order to make the current proposal to re-energize and recreate the nature of an e-mart. Ritchie Street was Documented, and a zone for the module was proposed, where the Active Ground Floor was retained, the first, second and third floors were zoned programatically to form a vertical market and spaces that helped revive the electronic mart. 12

Reclaiming the Marshland
Creating a Sustainable Vertical Community Project Type : Competition Entry: International Tropical Architecture Design Competition Program : High-Rise Mixed Use Vertical Development Location : Chennai,India Team Members: 3 Member Team Role & Contribution: Design Development, Presentation + Graphics The Pallikaranai marsh is the Site, and it is situated in an area that is plagued with floods, our design proposal was a Mound that functioned as an artificial floodplain housing the apartment complex. Through effective planning and incorporation of technology, there is great potential to be harnessed in the building and the construction sector to reduce its carbon footprint for greater climate resilience. After an extensive study of the marsh growth/reduction pattern, we found the encroachments and horizontal growth to be the main issue that lead to the shrinking of the marsh. Hence, we decided to demolish the existing horizontal developments, and rebuild it vertically using green building techniques to free up the area for the marsh to grow again. Section drawing showing the 22 residential floors above the commercial base, activating the dying marshlands of Pallikaranai.

The Bookshelf 10:30 a.m The Art Curator is a voracious reader, and she has a huge collection of books. The Bookshelf was designed to serve multiple functions : a Media Unit, a Writing Desk that allows her to gaze outwards towards the dense foliage of trees while pondering over her thoughts and a Vanity Unit with a dresser.
Crafted from Solid Wood with Brass Accents the Bookshelf preserves a traditional presence with Modern Undertones. The Joinery, Materials and Composition were extensively studied and translated into a Modern Context suitable to Contemporary Cabinet Making.

Located in Jayanagar, Bangalore this Office came as a more residential expression to Workspace Design which aims to bring aesthetic + functional sentiments of home into the Workplace. Armed with an airy open plan, ample seating and zones that carved out pockets of privacy + collaborative spaces, we tried to create a refreshing change from the sterile workspace. An aura of calm is reflected through the building, through the texture and muted palettes. These defined spaces, giving the office a new lease of life.
