YOU CANNOT meet Bina and walk away without thinking ‘wow, what an amazing woman...’ Born Rubina many moons ago from parents who were from the south of our country, Bina is the proverbial rags to riches story. Married to Mr Pavlou, together they have grown from a little grocery store Lucullus, to the massive Athienitis Spar, something which she chuckles did not happen overnight. We caught up with her in her fabulous home - her house is something out of a Top Billing episode, and with a house that grand you would expect a somewhat “diva-esque” personality, but in reality Bina is the exact opposite... As we sat and chatted with her in her beautiful kitchen she reminisces about growing up in the old days where she would play outside, go climbing trees and collecting fruit close to (what is now) the airport...Old school values were instilled in her as she was growing up. She learnt at Embakwe in Plumtree, a school run by The Catholic Church. The nuns there, she chuckles, did not do things for the students and as such they washed their own clothes, cleaned up and polished the floors themselves, something she says instilled her sense of get up and do it attitude. A true modern woman with old school values, Bina believes in a more hands on approach to doing things and is not shy to roll up her sleeves and do the work herself, a trait she feels is lacking in most young ladies of today. As cliché as this may sound she proudly says she learnt the ins and outs of business by being willing to do the hard work necessary. As we move on from the kitchen and settle in her lovely yard, she shifts the conversation to how she remembers meeting her husband at her old workplace, he was buying records (vinyl records) and she was a cashier. She talks with pride about sleeping on the floor in a flat in the Avenues and says that is what keeps her humble, something she wishes to pass onto her 4 kids. On how she balances being a wife, mother and more recently a business woman, she candidly says she hasn’t quite got there yet. She makes sure the entire family sits together for breakfast and dinner and spends that time bonding with them. She wishes children of today spent more time outdoors interacting with each other as opposed to always being on their tech gadgets (at this point she is also quick to say that it aint the kids but the parents who buy them the gadgets who should also shoulder the blame!). Its often rare to find a humble yet wealthy woman but Bina embodies all of that...
