CANTILLON SOLICITORS Since receiving the award of Litigation Team of the Year in the inaugural year of these awards, we have continued to work tirelessly to ensure that our clients’ needs are met. JOHN M. QUINN & CO. SOLICITORS. This habeas corpus case encompassing complex principles of sentencing law in Ireland and the United Kingdom resulted in two extremely important judgements, with significant consequences for transfers of prisoners sentenced abroad and the release from Portlaoise Prison of three men serving 28-year sentences.

THOMAS COUGHLAN & COMPANY H.N. v Minister for Justice C-604/12, determined by the Court of Justice of the EU on May 8th 2014, concerns applications for international protection in the context of EU law. As a result of the case it must be possible to submit both asylum and subsidiary protection applications from the outset and applications must be determined in a reasonable time.

MICHAEL J STAINES & COMPANY SOLICITORS ‘The Anglo Trial’: Michael J. Staines & Company defended Sean Fitzpatrick and Pat Whelan in this controversial case which involved novel and complex arguments highlighting the exacting standards expected of company directors. The case firmly put the criminal liability of directors in the spotlight and has had and continues to have far-reaching effects on corporate life in Ireland.

HOLMES O’MALLEY SEXTON Harry Fehily of HOMS acted for the plaintiffs, a venture capital fund and financial institution, in professional negligence proceedings against their former solicitors, one of the largest law firms in the country. The case involved a variety of issues including an examinership, a purported receivership, s.60 issues and the ‘no transaction’ defence. The claim was ultimately settled on very satisfactory terms to our client. This was one of the most contentious and complex cases ever handled by HOMS and is testament to the firm’s expertise in this area.
