SANCTUARY a haven for the excluded gender

//Undergraduate architectural thesis Studio 9

Trans genders are considered anomalies within the society – the deviants, the ‘unnatural’ and the ‘other’. They not only present alternatives to heteronormativity but also dare to question it by their very existence. The mainstream society is taught to fear them, ignore them and/or discriminate them. People consider them as western imports when their existence in India has been for over 4000 or more years and there are documented evidences of various types of genders having existed since time immemorial. The third gender in India is about 5 lakh which is an official number whereas transgender activists estimate the numbers to be more than six to seven times higher. . The transgender population of India faces numerous challenges: discrimination, lack of opportunities, systematic social exclusion. The community still face to continue the challenges of familial desertion, physical and emotional abuse as well as sexually transmitted disease epidemics.

MOTIVE

The aim was to create a sanctuary for Transgenders, transsexuals or any individual who suffers from a gender identity crisis (of any class, caste or religion) where they could experience a space where their spiritual and mental strengths are empowered and healed through different workshops, activities and practices.

NEED

Having been ostracised by their family and society, most of them are denied access to basic rights such as education, housing and work and are routinely subjected to discrimination, harassment and violence. Almost 70 percent of kids who go through gender identity crisis are school dropouts. There can be isolation, hiding and secrets, which can lead to depression and anxiety. Transgender adults are much more likely to have suicidal thoughts, with 50% of adults reporting some suicidal ideation. They lead a life with a lot of fear and uncertainties.

OBJECTIVES

8

The objectives of the project was threefold: •A space for Transgenders, transsexuals or any individual who suffers from a gender identity crisis(of any class, caste or religion)that would mentally empower and heal them through specially designed activities and practices. •Empower the Transgenders from the lower economic strata by providing them with shelter and vocational training which would eventually give them employment opportunities. •Bridge the gap between the mainstream society and the transgender community though the community centre and tourism.

DESIGN SCHEME EMPOWERMENT

Vocational training centres and workshops for those who seek job opportunities. In this centre, they are trained in a specific skillof their choice that would enable them to earn their living.

SOCIAL ACCEPTANCE

A promenade for the town of Ramanagaram that would bring the residents for evening walks and increase the interaction between the transgender community and the main stream society. A community centre and village resource centre for the villagers.

PYSCHOLOGICAL HEALING

To design a space that helps in the rejenuvation, healing of the spiritual and mental minds of the transgender community.

MASTERPLAN

10

The idea was to create nodes that tie all the diferent programmes of the project to function as one. The mini oat ties the primary health care and the drop in centre. The amphitheatre binds all the nodes .

The transition of the entrance lobby to the open space that looks out to beautiful landscape translates the idea of openess from a dark and closed minds that of an ostracised transgender.

The retreat zone of the project that consists of home stays for single person , double and dormitories , Spa and beauty parlour, park and a community pavillion. All of these are bound together with courtyards which provides as a gathering space.

architecture portfolio

A main pathway leads one to the different functional programmes of the project, to break the monotony of the linearity of the paathway nodes are introduced which acts as an an activity generator.

ECOPLEX

//Undergraduate urban design Studio 8

an ecopark

Urban parks were not conceived of as having ecological value or as being ecological restorations in the sense that we use these terms today. Parks arent sustainable, self replicating or ecological landscapes, though they may look natural to our eyes.

Whats in for the city?

MODEL PARK DESIGN : ECOLOGICAL PARK

Mysore is one of the famous tourist destinations of India but over the past fives years it has seen a stagnance , Eco- tourism will boost the city’s tourism. Creating an awareness on the preservation and conservation of the city’s ecosystem. The city will be known worldwide as it will be the only city in the country that houses an ecological park. It will prove to be a core lung space and a landmark.

INTENT

The project showcases diverse ecosystems as immersive teaching exhibits,Intent is to preserve the nautral environment of the region and create a national hub to agther various ecological conferences, seminars and programs. Strengthening the city’s growth economy throught the creation of green jobs, urban agriculure and organic food consumption , reducing greenhouse gas emissions and providing onsite renewable energy resources. To educate visitors that greening their lifestyles is not important effective and necessary. The supporting main programme would be the ecological institute and research centre, the students would be involved in the organization and advancement of the ecological park also creating a better dialogue between them and tourists.

The site is located near the junction of one main road and a secondary road. The site is amidst a rich naturesqu context with the kukrahalli lake and the mysore university which houses a rich flora. The centre for food testing and research institute is towards the secondary road. Towads the left of the site is a colony which then extends to a largely residential area. Mysore university and many other educatioal institutions are in the precincts of the site thus making this area majorly dominated by students.

CIRCULATION The tourist circulation is designed in such a way that the tourist is taken through a journey beginning with the mediterranean zone of the eco park to the tropical zone and then the continental zone. From there the tourist can move into the emporium and the journey continues to a space that takes them to the hot air balloon ride and they could decide where they would want to spend time further.

ZONING

This edge is towards the entry of the ecological institute giving a plaza for the students. This edge towards the colony is treated with food processing unit and the oragnic market along with a recreation space. This edge is towards the secondary road which involves more pedestrians, creating a small park with childrens play area and seating spaces.

EDGE TREATMEMT

SECTION

Towards this side of the secondary road and primary road are some existing vendors hence increasing the inflow of pedestrians, so giving the vendors a place to sell their items.

architecture portfolio

This edge is towards the main road but is at a 4m below the road level , this breathing space next to the restaurants gets activated all the more because of the inflow of people from the kukrahalli lake through the underpass.

ICONIC MOSQUE

18

Design Competition //Emaar design competition by BMA studio Involved in the Design and Visualization team

Domes play an integral part in the design of mosques because of the large spans they can withstand. The dome is projected at the centre of the mosque which is of glass and brass members. The dome lights up the prayer hall with enough natural light during

GROUND FLOOR PLAN Rounded arches are the essence of Islamic architecture. The idea was to merge the body of the structure with the arches to create a sense of fluidity and oneness between all the elements of the design.

Traditional minarets consisted of a vertical structure with openings and gallery which has an access to the top. The minarets in the proposal has a contemporary approach and hence consists of two surfaces which gives a sense of direction to the pilgrims but without an access to the top.

The design approach was to incorporate the basic design elements of Islamic architecture to the proposal giving emphasis to the Dome, Mihrab, Minarets, Arches and the Iwan.

MEZZANINE FLOOR PLAN

architecture portfolio

Rectangular Iwan is created as an entrance to the main axis to access the mihrab of the mosque. This concept was inspired from the great mosque of Isfahan in Iran. The expansive entrance is also an extension of the prayer hall during important religious days when the pilgrims are more than the usual days.

The idea is inspired from the layout of the city’s plan, with the core that is responsible for the administration of the city , the paths move radially outwards from the core, nodes are formed at junctions where the paths and ring roads meet.

The core design was to create the language of the city within the site. The city is zoned with the administration zone being the core, the residential zone after that and the industrial zone being the outermost core.

BIKER’S CAFE

Belur,Karnataka,India

For this design of a cafe housing guest rooms the architects of Andagere architects ( Bangalore , India ) adopted a simple but strong design idea. Fortunately I was priviledged with the responsibility as the project architect.

architecture portfolio

Site location : Belur , Karnataka, India

28

About the project : The project is situated on the main highway that connects Bangalore to Mangalore , one of the higways that invites quite a number of bikers. The bikers cafe serves to be a restocafe en route. The cafe includes a workshops , a few guest tooms , staff dormitory , staff living , outdoor cafe and the main cafe. The form is designed in a way such that it makes a statement and is noticed as one drives/ rides on the road just adjacent.

Design requirements: An office space for a catering company in Dubai. Color Palette : White and Grey with a quirk of colors. The client specified his need for mix of both a subtle office environment with a dash of color and quirk. The idea was to bring in color with a graffiti wall keeping the rest of the space white and grey.
