Minyan Matters Dear Friends,

obligations that devolve both from our membership as well as from the principles of our Torah. When someone is ill, we must visit them. When someone is grieving, we must comfort them. When someone is lacking the essentials of life, we must provide them. And when a quorum is needed to discharge the holy obligation of remembering a loved one with the timeless recitation of the Mourner’s Kaddish, a prayer that has offered hope and consolation to Jews for millennia, we have an obligation to any and all of our members who need us to be there at their side. The Kaddish cannot be said without the presence of ten Jews. It is inconceivable for someone to mourn without the adequate support of their community. While I have not yet had the Kaddish obligation in my own life, thank God, I have participated in many minyanim so that others can say Kaddish: on airplanes, in hotel lobbies, at the back of restaurants, in people’s homes, and of course, in shul.

We affiliate with synagogues because we believe in something larger than ourselves: God, to be sure, but also the inseparable bond we share with our fellow Jews. With that bond comes both privileges and responsibilities. What a privilege it is to welcome a new baby, a new Jewish life, into Rabbi the family of our people and our Adam J. Raskin congregation. What a privilege to affirm the Jewish commitments of a bar or bat mitzvah reading from the Torah for the first time. What a privilege to stand around a huppah as two people begin their life and a family together. What a privilege to partake in an active, dynamic congregation with programs, classes, Read more on Page 5... and services for all ages. Yet we also have obligations if we want this community to thrive. Not the least of these obligations is to support the very infrastructure that holds us all together under a common roof. But there are intangible obligations as well:

Notes from the Hazzan Hazzan Henrique Ozur Bass  301-299-7087 ext. 227 | hozurbass@harshalom.org

How to Become a Fountain Pen “Every one that passes among them that are numbered, from twenty years old and upward, shall give the offering of Adonai.” (Exodus 30:14) Twenty years old is the age of conscription into military service. We learn this from the book of Numbers, every time the Israelites are counted, the ones who are Hazzan Henrique Ozur Bass counted are males, 20 years old or above. Here the Torah teaches us that, even for religious and tax purposes, the age when one is counted among the community is the age of 20. Rashi explains the above verse as: “The Torah teaches here that no one under the age of twenty is counted among the adults.” Rabbi Samson Raphael Hirsch, one of the founders of modern orthodoxy, says regarding this verse: “The sanctuary is not to be given over to childhood and youth… It is the grown-ups, the seriousness and the power of virile life and endeavors that it awaits.”

Last month I wrote about the common misconception that 13 is the age of adulthood in Judaism. It is not and it has never been. But how come, when 20 is the correct age when one is counted as an adult, we celebrate one’s entering into the obligation of performing mitzvot at the age of 13? The link between the age 13 and bar-mitzvah comes from two Talmudic texts. In the first, we read “At 13 one is responsible for mitzvot” (Pirke Avot 5:24), and in the second “A person’s agent is like himself; an agent must be fully subject to the commandment (bar-mitzvah).” (Bava Metsia, 96a). From the first text we learn at what age one is required to perform mitzvot; from the second, what one is called who is responsible for performing mitzvot. Therefore, one who is required to perform all the commandments (bar-mitzvah) gets that name at the age of 13. Read more on Page 14...

CHIROPRACTIC I PHYSICAL THERAPY I REHAB

Work Better, Play Harder

Beineinu: Between Us | Continued from Page 2 Being a part of a minyan that guarantees someone else the opportunity to say Kaddish is one of the most powerful moments of interconnectedness. I am doing something so significant for a fellow Jew… I am doing something that only one Jew can do for another. The sense of mutual responsibility and concern is penetratingly powerful. All that being said, daily prayer is a mitzvah in Judaism whether or not there is a need for someone to say Kaddish. My teacher, Rabbi Neil Gillman, once said, “God is not a matter of faith, but a matter of awareness.” Daily prayer is a regular, ongoing awareness of the many blessings in life; it is an opportunity to step out of our specific daily routine, in order to realize the larger narrative of our lives; it is an opportunity for spiritual growth, meditation, and renewal; it is an opportunity to become more Jewishly-literate, more familiar with the liturgy and melody of Jewish life; it is an opportunity to talk to God and to listen to ourselves. Daily prayer is a portal to other mitzvot as well, such as tallit, tefillin, and listening, on Mondays and Thursdays, to an excerpt of that week’s Torah portion. It is an opportunity either to start or end the day with a grounded, contemplative, peaceful mindset. Daily prayer, like other daily routines (workouts, diets, etc.) provides structure and order to our existence, which often seems chaotic and unpredictable. We are blessed, at Har Shalom, to offer minyanim every day of the week throughout the year. Every evening, from Sunday - Thursday, we pray together at 7:45. It takes no more than 15 minutes. Every Sunday at 9 am as Religious School students stream into the building, a morning minyan convenes in the Sofair Chapel for approximately 30 minutes. Every Monday and Thursday morning at 6:45, a devoted congregant is prepared to chant a brief excerpt from the weekly parasha during the minyan that meets in the Chapel for approximately 40 minutes. Every Friday night, we gather and join in beautiful, joyful song as we welcome Shabbat with the melodies of Kabbalat Shabbat. Along with a brief D’var Torah, that upbeat service lasts about 50 minutes. While Shabbat morning is certainly our congregation’s “main event,” a dedicated core of congregants gathers every Shabbat in the late afternoon to pray, study Torah together, and bid farewell to Shabbat with Minha, Ma’ariv, and Havdalah.

At each of those times there is an opportunity to help make a minyan for someone who needs to say Kaddish. At each of those times, we can enhance our Jewish literacy, and take a step closer to God and spirituality. We all lead busy lives with many responsibilities pulling us in different directions. Please, dear friends, if you are able to come to minyan at any of those times (even if it’s once a week or once a month), make some commitment to this essential component of our congregational life… for those who depend on you to be there (remember that all of us, at one time or another, will depend on others to populate such a minyan in our time of need), and for the enhancement of your own spiritual life. With heartfelt blessings for the remainder of Passover and a glorious spring… Always, Rabbi Raskin The Grocery Gift Card Program is now a congregation-wide activity. Please help support Har Shalom through the purchase of grocery gift cards. There is nothing "extra" for you to pay; you simply pay for the face value of the Giant or Kosher Mart gift card and the stores make a contribution to Har Shalom. Cards are available whenever the main office is open. Gift cards for Giant come in $50 and $100 denominations; cards for Kosher Mart are available in $50 increments. When you buy Har Shalom Grocery Gift Cards, you are not only making purchases you've already planned to make, but you are supporting our congregation at the same time. A portion of the proceeds will be shared with Sisterhood to help support their important contributions to our community. Questions? Please call the office at (301) 299-7087 or email office@harshalom.org.

From the Executive Director Gary Simms, Executive Director  301-299-7087, ext. 222 | gsimms@harshalom.org

Dear Friends,

At a recent international meeting of NAASE, the Conservative Movement’s organization of executive directors, we learned much about making informed choices, based on data (and not mere anecdotes). We were informed that cutting edge research into synagogue life shows that the amount of personal interaction between clergy and members is the best predictor of a member’s connection to the congregation. There is no evidence that such interactions between executive directors and members leads to a similar result. Perhaps that’s because the question was not asked! Executive directors usually fly under the radar, unless things go quite badly.

Not very long ago, one of our most dedicated and committed members asked whether it was really necessary for me to write a “Jewish” message, given that Rabbi Raskin, Hazzan Ozur Bass, and Rabbi Cohen all write monthly Tablet messages that are Jewishly oriented. He suggested that I Gary Simms ought to be writing more about financial matters, or plans for building improvements, or new program management techniques. His comments were extremely courteous and But as an executive director of a shul, I know both from clearly thoughtful. They deserved some thoughtfulness anecdotes and from real data that congregations thrive on my own part. when members are connected one to another through a complex web of personal shared experiences. Creating My own bottom line is that my management style is those bonds is the job of each and every member, but an informed by my understanding of Jewish principles. When executive director can help facilitate that effort. Working dealing with employees, I am reminded that Jacob was for K’lal Yisrael, the entire People of Israel, is what makes deceived by his uncle Laban, and from that we have a line my job different than working for a trade or professional of rabbinic thought which teaches us to treat employees association. So if I do stray into a “Jewish” themed honestly and fairly. When interacting with congregants, I message from time to time, I think I have a justification can’t treat them as mere customers when our tradition for doing so. calls for care and consideration of each individual without regard to their rank or wealth. When managing funds, I B’shalom recall that the Sages prohibited collectors of the annual Gary D. Simms half-shekel from wearing garments with pockets, so as to avoid even the appearance of impropriety. In my short time here, I’ve attempted to change some of the atmospherics of our staff, striving for a culture of “yes” and overcoming the inertia of “no.” While not 100% successful, we are moving in the correct direction, and being positive and responsive is also part of the Jewish tradition (negative stereotypes to the contrary). We’re working to make the budget process smoother and more accurate, to make sure that we serve the interests of all to the best of our ability.

I hope that you are having a wonderful and sweet Pesah. Things at Har Shalom have been hopping. Our Membership and New Member Committees, led by Susan Grant and Sheila Hahn respectively, have been busy creating new ways to get to know one another. We are advertising and organizing havurot: honing in on your particular interests and demographics. We are sponsoring neighborhood coffees and a monthly Rabbi’s Tisch with Rabbi Raskin. On Sunday, May 5th we are having a membership Cabaret, featuring the music of Broadway & Pop. Hors d'oeuvres and desserts will be served (see Page 24 for details). (And I want to give a special Yasher Koah to Shelley who stepped in as Interim Director and has done an outstanding job!) Our children will be well taught, loved and cared for by Brenda. She begins this summer. Likewise, our Religious School is enjoying one of its most successful years ever. We have expanded our post-b’nai mitzvah program and are experiencing a renaissance. Our children have enjoyed field trips, overnights, creative programming and hands on programing, all while being exposed to an improving Hebraic program and improved curriculum. Our experience with the children of Tikvat Israel has been mutually rewarding. The integration of their school into Har Shalom has been seamless. They have asked to continue the relationship. This is important to add critical mass to our classes and improve the experience of all of our students. Kudos to Rabbi Cohen and Eileen Penner, Chair of our Religious School Board.

The Fountainhead music appeals to all ages. They are energetic and engaging. Tickets are available on line at: www.tinyurl.com/FoHeadsTix or in our office. Rabbi Deborah B. Cohen

The Seaboard Region of the Jewish Educators Assembly is holding a Gala Celebration Honoring Jewish Education this month, honoring community members for their dedication to Jewish Education within the Conservative Movement. They issued a difficult challenge to our congregation: nominate one teacher and one layperson for this award.

This challenge was difficult because there are so many talented and dedicated teachers and laypeople at the congregation. After much deliberation, we decided to ask Shelley Remer to be our lay honoree and Alice Strasser to be our teacher honoree. Here is a little about our honorees. Mazel Tov to them!

If you are interested in attending the dinner and gala celebration on April 21 and helping to honor Shelley and Alice, please contact me at RabbiCohen@harshalom.org. I would be happy to share the information and celebrate with you!

Notes from the Hazzan | Continued from Page 3 At 13 one is required to live as a Jew: all the commandments are upon him/herself. However, one is only an adult, as far back as the Torah, at the age of 20 and above. It is not that different from the law of the land which surrounds us: at 14 one is allowed to pursue certain professional duties and has minimal criminal liability. But one is only fully responsible for him/herself at the age of 18.

One can, at the age of 13, declare oneself to be apt to performing mitzvot, and even lead others in performing Shelley Remer and her husband, Stewart, have been the commandments. One can, even, declare oneself to active members of Har Shalom for over thirty years. For be a fountain pen. To be an adult, however, you will the past two years, she has enthusiastically served as have to wait a little bit more. Adult Education Chairperson and she previously served as the Vice President of Administration and Religious Activities and the chairwoman of the Gemilut Hasadim, B’nai Mitzvah and Nominating Committees. Professionally, Shelley directed the Kehilat Shalom Preschool for eight years, the Adas Israel Gan HaYeled for 20 years, served as the co-president of the National Jewish Early Childhood Network, and now is serving as the Interim Director of the Har Shalom ECEC. Alice Strasser has taught Religious School for 50 years, to students of every age from pre-school through postB’nai Mitzvah. She studied Jewish education both at the Jewish Theological Seminary and Hebrew Union College. For most of her career, Alice taught at synagogues in Westchester County, NY, but three years ago, she moved to Maryland to be closer to her children and grandchildren and came to Har Shalom as a Hebrew tutor and a Junior Congregation Torah teacher.

Early Childhood Education Center Shelley Remer, Interim Director ď‚— 301-299-7087, ext. 235 | shelley@harshalom.org

Introducing our New ECEC Director! Congregation Har Shalom President Jeff Ashin distributed the following message to the congregation via email on March 11, announcing the appointment of Brenda Footer as the new Director of the ECEC. I am pleased to introduce Brenda Footer as the new Director of our Early Childhood Education Center.

Here at the ECEC, our children are learning and performing mitzvot each and every day! Judaism gives us guidelines on how to act with justice and righteousness: from performing the mitzvah of bikkur holim (caring for the sick), calling a classmate who is home ill, tikkun olam (repairing the world), collecting canned foods for the needy, to tza'ar ba'alei hayim (caring for animals). While we might not get to all 613 mitzvot, our youngest children are developing lifelong behaviors they will take with them for the rest of their lives. After all, they are our future.

Brenda brings to us more than twenty years of experience as an educator, curriculum advisor and administrator for infants, toddlers, preschoolers and pre-Kindergarten children. Brenda holds a Bachelor of Arts in Early Childhood Education. Her experience includes working at the Smithsonian Early Enrichment Center, Adas Israel Gan HaYeled (under the tutelage of our own Shelley Remer) and her current position as lead teacher and pedagogista at Shaare Tefilah. Our ECEC Search Committee, led by Craig Ginsburg and Stewart Remer, and including David Silver, Jodi Chen, Marisa Marcus, Lisa Lind, Judi Greenberg, Rabbi Raskin, Hazzan Ozur Bass, Rabbi Cohen and Gary Simms, has performed extensive research in order to recommend Brenda. She has the committee's unanimous endorsement and mine. I know that our children and grandchildren will benefit from her direction and that our program will continue to thrive.

Lucy performs the mitzvah of bal taschit (taking care of the environment) by carefully watering the Panda parsley plants.

Brenda's official start date is July 1st, though I know you will see her often at Har Shalom before then. Please join me in extending her a warm welcome. L'Shalom, Jeff Ashin

With a bird house outside of their classroom window, the Turtles have been performing the mitzvah of tza'ar ba'alei hayim (caring for animals) as they give food to the birds throughout the winter.

School and Camp Registration Now Available! To register for the ECEC 2013-2014 school year, or to register for Summer 2013 camp, go to our website, www.harshalomecec.org, contact Interim ECEC Director Shelley Remer at Shelley@harshalom.org, or call 301-299-7087, ext. 235.

When Children Intermarry... Ongoing Text Study A Discussion Group for Talmud Study Parents & Grandparents with Rabbi Cahan With Rabbi Adam Raskin and Lori Schutz, LCSW Sunday, April 14 from 9:15 to 10:30 am When a child chooses to intermarry, parents and grandparents often have a variety of emotions, questions and concerns. And, as an intermarried couple matures and has children of their own, new questions and, sometimes, conflicts arise. The focus of our March session will be establishing and maintaining boundaries. These sessions are intended for members of Har Shalom whose children have married or are planning to marry non-Jews. It will be an open, honest and non-judgmental place for sharing and learning.

Mondays, 8 - 9 pm Explore the Talmud and its lessons with Rabbi Cahan. This perennial favorite has been around for over a decade. Hebrew or prior study is helpful, but not required. Novice students always welcome! Touch the sources created by the Sages.

Shabbat Torah Study

With Fred Steinberg Each Shabbat at approximately 12:30 pm Join this popular, long-standing Torah discussion group. No Hebrew knowledge or previous Torah study necessary. Just an interest in looking at Torah text and discussing it.

On the Small Screen: Modern Orthodox in Today’s Minha/Torah Study/Ma'ariv Israel with Ira Weiss Study Group Tuesdays, April 9 and 16 at 8 pm In this class we will be flies on the wall of the places where young modern Orthodox Jews in Israel hang out. We will be privy to the conflicts that they confront; their friendships; their dining, living and dating arrangements and how they interact with the rest of Israeli society. Each class will begin with a short introduction followed by the screening of an episode of the award-winning dramatic Israeli TV series SRUGIM. Class discussion will follow each screening. Ira Weiss, Ph.D., is a retired neurophysiologist and an avid collector of cinema related to Jews and Israel.

Har Shalom Delegation and Over 14,000 Attend AIPAC Policy Conference Over 14,000 supporters of Israel, including our own Har Shalom delegation led by Rabbi Raskin, attended the 2013 AIPAC Policy Conference at the Washington Convention Center last month. This was a fantastic experience for all. The spirit was amazing, as all were focused on Israel and the American - Israel relationship. The crowd included Jewish men and women, both Democrats and Republicans, from all corners of the continent. There were over 2,500 very vocal youth from colleges and high schools, who were noted many times as the next generation and our future leaders. Speakers included Vice President Biden, Israel Prime Minister Netanyahu, Israel Defense Minister Ahud Barak, former Ambassador Dennis Ross, and Israeli Ambassador to the United States Michael Oren, among many others. It was gratifying to see both sides of the American political spectrum represented, as Congressmen Eric Cantor, John Cornyn, Steny Hoyer and Robert Menendez talked about the tight bonds between the US and Israel. Over one hundred breakout sessions of panels and speakers addressed a wide range of subjects on Iran, Palestinians, Israel, the U.S.-Israel Relationship and the Greater Middle East. Discussions focused on Israel's survival in the face of a tenuous and uncertain situation following the so-called Arab Spring. There was much talk about Israel's amazing technological and entrepreneurial prowess, which far exceeds that of so many countries. Many heard briefings on the Iron Dome program, which saved so many Israeli lives this past fall when it successfully shot down 400 missiles launched from Gaza. On the last day of the conference, many went to Capitol Hill to lobby their congressman. Our group visited Senators Mikulski and Cardin and Congressmen Van Hollen and Delaney. It is a statement of AIPAC's organization, that the office of every Congressman and Senator was visited by AIPAC activists that day. The lobbying focused on bills to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear capability, strengthening U.S.- Israel strategic cooperation and in support of security assistance aid to Israel. It was an emotional experience to see so many focused on the welfare of Israel. Attendees came away, not only more knowledgeable of the current state and needs of Israel, but committed, more than ever, to do what is necessary for Israel's survival.

The Tallitot Project has become something I treasure. The women of the Abayudaya community (the Jewish community in Uganda) do not have tallitot to don when they enter the synagogue. Our Sisterhood wants to change that. So far, we've had two meetings that have produced beautiful results. To date, we have three completed tallitot and seven more still in the depths of the creative process. The best part about this project is that every session brings more women together, whether they believe they are creative or not, to give Ugandan women the opportunity to wear a tallit. I've had the privilege to have an email exchange with a representative of the Abayudaya community. They were overwhelmed and, I think, humbled by our commitment to present the "mamas" of their community with tallitot. It is Sisterhood's wish to involve as many individuals in the Har Shalom community in this effort, as well as find a way to involve the Abayudaya.

Sisterhood Nominating Committee The Nominating Committee for Sisterhood, consisting of Rachel Katz (chair), Faith Adler, Ellen Balfour, Ronni Cristol, Ruth Levin, Lynn Mintzer, and Margie Swerdlow has begun the process to fill the Slate of Officers and Directors for 2013-2015. Please email any questions, comments, or ideas to SisterhoodNominating@HarShalom.org.

Wednesday, April 3, at 12:15 PM Rescheduled due to our faux snow day, Lynnette Spira will lead the discussion on April 3 of Defending Jacob: A Novel by William Landay. Ellen Kaner Bresnick will facilitate the discussion of One More River by Mary Glickman this fall. Whether or not you’ve come before or have even read the book, bring your brown bag dairy lunch and enjoy an afternoon of camaraderie and a bit of exercise of your little gray cells. Eat-and-chat begins at 12:15 pm. At 1 pm the book discussion begins.

My dream is to create enough tallitot to give every woman in the Abayudaya community the option to wear one. The reality is that are five synagogues in this community. To narrow the gap between the dream and reality, the Sisters of the 'hood have their creative juices flowing (as always). Help us spread the word. If you are looking for Mark your calendar for the rest of the year: a mitzvah project for yourself, your child, or even your parent, join us for an evening of fun and creativity. • May 1, The Memory Palace: A Memoir by Mira Bartók, facilitator - Ellen Cades Our next tallit embellishing session is Monday, April 29th. • June 5, End-of-year luncheon, time and place TBD. The body Adding In, Taking Away will be on display through of work in this exhibit uses handmade recycled papers and inks to recreate and remember the complexity of the past. Monday, April 22, 2013. The artwork on the gallery walls includes a variety of printmaking techniques by artists Patricia Affens, Olney, MD; Allan Akman, Rockville, MD, a member of Har Shalom; and Pauline Jakobsberg, Potomac, MD, a founding member of Har Shalom. The works in the showcases include sculpture by Charles Edwin Myers, Bethesda, MD, a member of Har Shalom; and woodworking by William Peirce, Silver Spring, MD. Each of the processes used by these artists requires that they add in - ink, oil, stone, wood - or take away.

Myers creates biblical characters, objects, and scenes in stone, plaster and terracotta sculpture. Many of his works are images and forms that are surreal but recognizable versions of familiar and not-so-familiar objects. Peirce has been a woodworker and sculptor for over 30 years. In this exhibit, he is showing only his wood vessels made with a band saw, not turned on a lathe, built from a variety of wood species.
