Author of The Month PIERETTA DAWN The youngest English-writing Thai author, Pieretta Dawn received national critical acclaim with her debut young adult novel “The Mermaid Apprentices”, published in English and Thai by NanmeeBooks when she was 15. The novel was translated by Sumalee, translator of the Harry Potter series, and has been praised by various authors, including S.E.A. Write Award winners Jiranan Pitpreecha and Binlah Sonkalagiri. Since then, “The Mermaid Apprentices” has been translated into Italian, and Pieretta Dawn has also published the second book of her trilogy, “The Nymph Treasury”, along with a graphic novel version of “The Mermaid Apprentices”. She is currently one of six Brand Ambassadors for the Bangkok Metropolitan’s campaign “Bangkok Read for Life” in association with UNESCO.
...I feel honored that people would even consider me an author, that they’d even ask for my autograph. To me, I’m just a normal girl with a passion.... You published your first book at 15. What’s your story?
THE MERMAID APPRENTICES (THE INTERSPECIES Vol. 1) Bt.295 9789743504327
I’ve always wanted to write a book. When I was six or seven, I tried writing a story about mermaids. Obviously, my writing was nowhere near good enough. But then at around the age of twelve, I’d just finished reading the Harry Potter series, and searched for other novels of a similar genre. I was swept up into this world of fantastical creatures and magical beings. Then I realized that I really wanted to write a book—I wanted to convey the same sense of adventure. My goal was to have others read my work and feel the same excitement I felt when I read a really good book. At thirteen, I started building the outline for my trilogy. Then at fourteen, I wrote the first installment, “The Mermaid Apprentices”. At fifteen, I was published by Nanmee. I was lucky enough to have them as my publishers, and they were the ones who suggested that the book

be translated into Thai as well to reach a wider audience. I don’t think they’ve ever had such a young girl who wrote in English present them with a manuscript before. Why mermaids? And what’s your process of planning the story, or creating the characters? I feel like nowadays, there are so many books on wizards, elves, and vampires. Mermaids have always been my favorite creature, so I thought, “Hey, why not write a book about mermaids?” As for the process, I just kind of go through a chronological order. I know not all authors do this, but it’s much easier for me to make things flow. I don’t always know what’s going to happen in the middle of a story, but I find that it’s easier if you know where you want to end up. After that, it’s just a matter of filling in the blanks. My characters are often amalgamations of people I know in real life, imaginary people I’d like to know, and personality traits that I find fascinating. It’s vital to create a dynamic set of characters that your readers can really relate to, and to make them as 3D and realistic as possible. We heard you’re an avid traveler. Is that where you get your inspiration from? A lot of the time, it is. Especially with the settings. I love to base my settings on where I’ve been to—for me it adds this reality to it that no imagination can make up for. Since I set the trilogy in a fictional country called Mondreside, I had to make it somewhat realistic. I couldn’t just cook up a random country. The geography, the culture, the ethnic background of the population had to make sense. People often think writing a fantasy book’s really easy—that you can just make up anything. But to me, the beauty of fantasy is that if you make it realistic enough, it seems as if it really exists. One of my hopes is that readers can journey into these landscapes I’ve created through my writing. How does it feel to be one of the youngest writers in the publishing industry, and what have you learnt? Honestly? I feel honored that people would even consider me an author, that they’d even ask for my autograph. To me, I’m just a normal girl with a passion. Sometimes it’s a bit intimidating. I know my writing isn’t perfect, but I’m going to continue to hone my skills and write more books. Although response for my work has generally been positive, there is the occasional negative comment. If it’s constructive criticism about my work, I can definitely understand and try to improve my writing. But then there are those who think I didn’t write the book myself, that I had a ghost writer or some ridiculous idea. Instead of getting beaten down, I just think to myself, “If they think the work is too good for a kid to write, then I must have written it pretty well!” So I’ve figured out that no matter what you do, there will always be people who try to bring you down. But I’m going to keep on doing what I love, and hopefully I’ll get to prove them wrong along the way. What’s your ultimate goal in writing? I’d love to get my work on the New York Times Bestsellers List. It’s an ambitious dream, I know, but it’s one of those things I’d really like to happen, along with being internationally published. Right now my book is also available in Italy, and publishing companies in Korea and Russia have contacted me. If my current work isn’t good enough, well, I’m just going to have to keep on writing, and hopefully one day it will be good enough to get published all around the world.
