SPOTLIGHT | ISSUE #6 | JUNE 2022 Welcome to our first issue of ‘Spotlight’ in this our new Season of Asian Art in London 2022. We are proud this year to celebrate our 25th season and so this issue pioneers a slightly new format as part of our recognition of reaching this milestone and looking forward to the next 25 years! I am delighted to say that Michael Spink, the first ever Chair of the Board of Asian Art in London, back 25 years ago, has agreed to introduce the dealers and galleries and so I herewith pass the baton to him... Henry Howard-Sneyd, Chair of Asian Art in London

25 years ago the idea of Asian Art in London was an aspiration, a belief that dealers and auctioneers could create a focus around exhibitions and events that would attract as many people as possible with an interest in Asian Art to London. We would have been delighted to know that the basic format would still underpin the event a quarter of a century later! As the inaugural chairman (1997-1999), I am honoured to have been asked to write a few words to introduce this edition of Spotlight. The wonderful selection of objects offered here shows that the quality of pieces for sale is as high as ever. As well as more traditional collectors’ selections such as ceramics and sculpture, it is very pleasing to see the expansion into contemporary art and objects, and also materials from the natural world. Chinese objects include ceramics from Marchant, and snuff bottles from Susan Page. From Japan are watercolours offered by Hanga Tan, and woodblock prints at Anastasia von Seibold. Sculptures of Ganesh, the Indian elephant headed god are offered by John Eskenazi, and contemporary painting from India by Rob Dean. This year also sees Asian Art in London expand from its traditional autumn dates into an additional celebration in the summer months, showing it is as strong as ever. Michael Spink

JONATHAN HOPE London, by appointment

Jonathan Hope has been collecting and handling textiles and other works of art, specialising in South East Asia, since the 1970s. He has exhibited at several international art events most recently Asian Art in London and has participated in noncommercial shows. He is a regular contributor to Hali magazine and lectures on Indonesian textile traditions. Wading birds, probably egrets placed in a “lotus garden” was a popular theme in north coast Javanese batik. The rich saturation and balance of colour make this piece exceptional. It is signed by the batik artist “Simonet” which was the married name of Tan Ien Nio who was of Chinese Indonesian descent. These small wooden figures from the southern Moluccan islands of Indonesia are believed to represent departed ancestors. This example is most probably from the Babar islands.

KAMAL BAKHSHI MODERN ASIAN ART London (By appointment only)

Kamal Bakhshi Modern Asian Art is a London based dealer of Modern Asian Art. Specialising in the work of Japanese artists our catalogue ranges from masterpieces by: Toko Shinoda, Daniel Kelly, and Kazuko Shiihashi, to contemporary print-works by Ray Morimura, Kazutoshi Sugiura and Ryohei Tanaka. Kamal Bakhshi Modern Asian Art also offer a range of museum quality woodblock prints by master printmakers: Yoshitoshi Mori, Sadao Watanabe and Iwami Reika. KAZUKO SHIIHASHI (B.1954) Ms Shiihashi worked for several years on Kimono designs, employing the traditional Japanese dying technique of Yuzen. It was then that she discovered natural pigments and the materials used in traditional Japanese painting. The shift from decorative art to fine art evolved naturally, evidence that in Japan, the distinction between ‘artists’ and ‘craftsmen’ is fluid. She accentuates the deep connection between nature and art, that is fundamental in the Japanese aesthetic. Kazuko’s works are made of Japanese handmade paper, crushed, gilded and painted, then spread on identical wood panels (90 x 30 cm), which, when assembled, vary between lengths of 1.2 and 3 metres. This gives her work a deeply textural flavour, and her use of natural mineral pigments add to the jewel-like quality of her paintings. She lives and works in Tokyo. Kazuko has held numerous solo exhibitions all over the world.

RAQUELLE AZRAN VIETNAMESE FINE ART 320 East 57th Street New York NY 10022, USA A leading specialist in Vietnamese Fine Art since 1997, Raquelle Azran is an international collector, museum curator and dealer. Based in Hanoi since 1991, her personal access to Vietnamese artists has enabled over 100 exhibitions - in Asia, Europe and the United States - of the most exciting modern and contemporary Vietnamese paintings. “I believe that artwork must be experienced viscerally. The conversation between viewer and artwork is a very personal moment, which I am delighted to offer to aficionados of Vietnamese fine art as well as to those for whom the delight of discovery lies ahead.” Tran Huu Chat 1933 - 2018: Beginning as a poster painter, working in charcoal on dried banana leaf, Tran Huu Chat quickly advanced to painting, printing and lithography. In 1956, he studied at the re-opened Hanoi Academy of Fine Art under Hoang Tich Chu and attained fame as an illustrator. Following postgraduate studies in China (ceramics) and France (museum restoration), he was sent during the American War to the mountain highlands to depict the armed struggle. His art has since focused on the ethnic tribes whom he portrays in carved lacquer paintings (sơn khắc), a highly difficult and much esteemed medium. Eight of his paintings are in the Vietnam National Fine Arts Museum in Hanoi.

ROSEMARY BANDINI LTD. PO Box 2281. Woodford Green IG7 5YP Having started her career at Sotheby’s in 1977, Rosemary Bandini went on to work preparing catalalogues with her husband, Luigi Bandini, at Eskenazi, before becoming an independent dealer in 1998. She is the author of several books and catalogues, including Shishi and Other Netsuke, the collection of Harriet Szechenyi. She curated and produced a catalogue. for an important exhibition of netsuke from European collections, In a Nutshell, held at the Embassy of Japan in 2013. She is a board member of the International Netsuke Society and chairman of Euronetsuke and editor of its publication of the same name. She now deals privately, producing catalogues and holding occasional exhibitions to coincide with Japanese art events. Dealing primarily in netsuke, sagemono and lacquerware the two selected works are both highly collectible examples of the various accessories worn hanging from the traditional obi (sash) that secures the kimono. The netsuke is a carved toggle anchoring the sagemono (hanging object) in place, while the kiseruzutsu is a pipecase. Their form and decoration were an attestation of their owner’s status and taste.

W. SHANSHAN 珊然軒

3 Duke of York Street, St James’s, London, SW1Y 6JP W. SHANSHAN 珊然軒 is established by Dr. Shanshan Wang and has a unique focus on early Asian art, particularly Chinese ceramics and sculptures from the Neolithic period to the Han and Tang dynasties. The gallery aims to rediscover the value and history of early objects, from which later art forms were derived and their aesthetic level exemplified. Our selected collection includes rare earthenware pottery, gilt and inlaid metal works, blue-glazed ceramics, marble sculptures, with an extension to later Korean and Japanese objects. The gallery performs as a platform to connect all art enthusiasts and catalyse new conversations and ideas between collectors from different disciplines. It encourages cultural exchange between the East and the West through delivering to the public lecture series, handling sessions and “Monthly Art Salon”. The natural beauty of the mini jar comes from its delicate surface patterns, formed by impressions of a rough-woven fibre, possibly cotton or straw. It has a thin rim and finely made two pairs of tubular ‘ears’ attached on opposite sides of the rim. The dancing lady figure shows a robust movement through her gesture and the folded and wavy sleeve from the right arm. The gentle facial detail, even just a few lines, expresses her joy and inner peace, highlighted by the mysterious smile. The most exquisite part is the elaborate flower hair ornaments, the three chrysanthemums, which are well blossoming just like the dancing lady full of life.

SIMON PILLING

PO Box 834 Rickmansworth WD3 0RA Established in 2005, Simon Pilling offers fine Japanese works of art. All are sourced directly from Japan, and so are fresh to the Western market. A particular focus is on the 20th century – a period of artworks still largely undiscovered in the West – and contemporary works. While carrying pieces in a variety of media – ceramic, metal, wood and graphic – his specialisation is in lacquer, the quintessential and perfect Japanese artform. Emerald Rock exudes a mysterious attraction, that could recall the phenomenon of a Mexican cenote – the naturally occurring sinkhole where limestone bedrock collapses to reveal a brilliant, intense, turquoise subterranean water pool. Ogawa’s work has won the prestigious Japanese Ceramic Society Prize in 2001 and the Prize for Excellence in Tokyo’s Musée Tomo in 2010. It is widely held in museum collections, including Tokyo’s Museum of Modern Art, the Suntory Museum Tokyo, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts. A servant in an aristocratic household sleeps blissfully, his shoulders hunched over, his knees drawn up to his chest, and his head resting on his hands. It is an image of total serenity. The bare, crossed, feet are a powerful element in the design which, in true Japanese form, carries on in great detail on the unseen, underside of the work. The court hat is removable, giving access to a large interior storage space. The origins of this unique piece can only be speculative, but its quality and playful allusions to court practices would suggest that it may have been commissioned by a group of literati friends to serve as a constant reminder that true enlightenment comes from simple pleasures, as the dreaming court servant epitomises.

Japanese porcelain celadon glazed ewer and cover, 1997 Kawase Shinobu Porcelain, 10 inches, 25.4 cm high

PROVENANCE • Included in the 12th solo exhibition at Kandori, The New Otani Hotel, Tokyo, titled Haku-Gyoku-sen (Sharp White Jade), 1997, which consisted of related ewers mostly in cream-white glaze and cups. • This ewer is considered to be one of the greatest masterpieces ever produced by Kawase Shinobu and was included by the Musée Tomo, The Kanjitsu Kikuchi Memorial Tomo Museum of Art, Tokyo, in their retrospective exhibition of Beyond Tradition – Seeking His Serene Blue: Celadon Works by Kawase Shinobu, 2011, illustrated in the catalogue, no. 41, p. 25. • From the collection of Mr. & Mrs. Eiji Obuchi, Ninomiya-machi, Kanagawa-ken, Japan, March 2021. • Another white crackle glazed ewer was included in the solo exhibition at Ginza Kurodatohen, titled Ginjo no Utuwa (Utensils on Precious Tray), 2009 and illustrated in the hardback catalogue, no. 27. Only two other related ewers are known and were specially ordered by Mr. K. Aso of Aso Arts, Tokyo and by Manyodo, Tokyo, although both of those pieces reputedly have kiln faults o n the spout. The suggestion is that although the artist pays meticulous care and attention to the creation of these works, it is lucky if they come out of the kiln without any issues. • The ‘Master of Celadon’ has expressed that the pieces produced for that exhibition are amongst the most elegant that he has ever made in his artistic life. The Chinese character for the word ‘sharp’ has multiple meanings and could be interpreted as ‘pinnacle’ or ‘precise’.

HANGA TEN

PO BOX 67812, London, SW7 9BL, (by appointment only) Hanga Ten (in Japanese “Shop of Prints”) is a leading specialist of contemporary Japanese prints. Established over twenty years ago in London, Hanga Ten has been instrumental in introducing the works of master print artists from Japan to a worldwide audience of private and institutional collectors. Hanga Ten represents twenty-five artists and exhibits at major art fairs in the UK up to six times a year. Frequent visits to Japan ensure strong and long-term relationships with our artists which our international clientele can confidently rely upon. Hanga Ten is pleased to introduce two works by Joel Stewart (b. 1959) an established printmaker and watercolour artist who has lived in Kyoto for over three decades. Here we present two beautiful watercolour works which capture the ambience of the early summer months. Stewart uses watercolour when he ventures outside to recreate the countryside around Kyoto, or to capture the still life beauty of ceramic vases. While out in nature, it is important for him to be in tune with his surroundings. To him, this means “emptying himself”, soaking up the sensory images, and then expressing what he has seen in one of his atmospheric paintings. “You lose yourself, and then you get yourself back”, he says. Stewart has had many solo exhibitions and has taken part in many art fairs, in the United States, UK and Japan. His works are represented in the Portland Art Museum, the Allen Memorial Museum in Ohio, the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Library of Congress Washington DC, Hoehn Family Galleries – University of San Diego among others.

PRIESTLEY & FERRARO

3 Bury Street, St James’s, London, SW1Y 6AB Priestley & Ferraro specialises in early Chinese art, with a focus on the ceramics of the Song dynasty and the periods immediately before and after. This was an exceptional time in the history of Chinese – and world – ceramics. Innovation was matched only by the perfection of technique, resulting in the proliferation of kilns all over China, each dedicated to a range of beautiful and characteristic wares. It is in this rich and rewarding field that we aim to find the finest pieces for the collector. Although our primary emphasis is on ceramics, we enjoy dealing in many categories of earlier Chinese works of art, including lacquer, both carved and undecorated, jades and cloisonné enamels, and from the pre-Song period, Han and Tang dynasty pottery animals and figures and Buddhist stone carving. The business was established in 1994 by David Priestley and Benedicta Ferraro. David studied Song dynasty ceramics under Mary Tregear at Oxford, before joining Sotheby’s in London where he worked as an expert in the Chinese Department. In 2002 Priestley & Ferraro was joined by Alice Williamson, also formerly of Sotheby’s and a graduate of SOAS. Priestley & Ferraro is a member of the British Antique Dealers Association (BADA). For Asian Art in London’s inaugural Summer Event, Priestley & Ferraro are delighted to present an exhibition focussed on an important white marble stele from the Northern Qi period dated to AD 562. This limestone lamp is also a product of the short but important Northern Qi dynasty which lasted from 550 to 577 and produced some of the highest quality stone carvings in Chinese history. The horse provides another example of Chinese marble sculpture, produced slightly later, during the Tang dynasty (618-906) or Five Dynasties period (907-960) with characteristic decorative saddle and straps.

SUSAN PAGE - CHINESE SNUFF BOTTLES Green Park House, 15 Stratton Street, London, W1J 8LQ

Susan Page is a snuff bottle dealer based in London. Having previously worked with Robert Hall for over 30 years, she set up her own business in 2018. She is a board member of the International Chinese Snuff Bottle Society and writes regularly for the Society Journal. Bottle one displays a distinctive variation on the usual style of the chilong, each has a coiled beast on one side with jaws opened wide and on the reverse a more benign beast with a feline head and floppy ears. This bottle was exhibited at The Canadian Craft Museum, Vancouver, 1992. Bottle two is made of a fossiliferous limestone which was a popular material during the mid- Qing dynasty and would have been associated with the Official class, a touch of genius is the use of the natural markings which look like lotus flowers and buds.

MANDARIN MANSION

Fuhrhopstraat 2, Haarlem, the Netherlands (by appointment only)

Founded in 2005 by Peter Dekker, based in the historic city of Haarlem, the Netherlands. Mandarin Mansion deals in arms and armour of Asia and other rare objects from old warrior cultures. Peter is well-known among researchers, collectors, and institutions for his thorough approach to the study of the subject. The Korean bowcase and quiver represents an earlier style of such sets, featuring pebble-grained leather and wide silk embroidery. Each piece was acquired from a different source, but they are obviously produced by the same workshop. The Japanese shortsword, “wakizashi”, has a golden inlaid inscription on the tang that tells us it was tested by the notable 17th-century Japanese sword tester Yamano Kaemon Nagahisa. On May 4th, 1666 he cut through two torsos. An incredible feature with such a short blade.
