India bowl out England for 237

India bowled England out for a modest 237 in good batting conditions in the second one-day international at the Ferozeshah Kotla ground in New Delhi on Monday. Kevin Pietersen's 46 was the top score as wickets tumbled at regular intervals after England captain Alastair Cook won the toss and elected to bat in the daynight match Vinay Kumar returned with his best one-day figures of four for 30, and fellow-seamer Umesh Yadav picked up two wickets in an impressive display by the under-strength

The shackles were broken when Praveen conceded 17 runs in his third over as Jonathan Trott smashed three consecutive fours and Pietersen also helped himself to a boundary. Trott made a fluent 34 with seven fours when he was caught behind off Vinay to reduce England to 48-3 by the 10th over. Ravi Bopara helped

Leicester City manager Sven-Goran sacked

Sven-Goran Eriksson has been sacked as Leicester City manager following the Championship club's disappointing start to the season. Leicester were tipped to win promotion to the Premier League after spending close to ÂŁ15m in the summer on a number of highprofile signings but Saturday's humiliating 3-0 home defeat against Millwall left the club in 13th place and eight points behind Southampton, the Championship leaders. It was the final straw for the Leicester board.

In Search Of The Little Diamonds Of Bradford

A competition has been launched for children to create a lasting memory of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations. Next year the Queen celebrates 60 years on the throne and to mark this historic occasion a series of national and local events and activities are being planned involving local schools, businesses and community groups. Children have been invited to take part in the Little Diamonds of Bradford competition to create a story book to commemorate the event. A similar initiative was successfully held ten years ago to mark the Queen’s Golden Jubilee and involved 20 local school children drawing pictures and writing text for a story

book called ‘Shake, Royal ‘n’ Roll’. The book was sent to the Queen and distributed to local children. Children are now invited to submit stories and pictures for the second book which will be called ‘Raiders of the Lost Card – a diamond quest’. The book, which will feature drawings and stories about the Royal Family, will be professionally designed

and distributed as part of the celebrations. Additional activities children can get involved with include making papier mache models depicting characters from the book; creating royal costumes from any time period; making table top models; submitting paintings, drawings and poetry about the Royal family and producing their own animated film. The winning entrants will have their work displayed at a special Diamond Jubilee exhibition and get the chance to meet the Lord Mayor. There will be prizes for the winners and certificates for everyone who takes part. The Lord Mayor of Bradford, Coun Naveeda Ikram, said:

"This is a chance for young people in the district to get involved in the Diamond Jubilee celebrations and create long-lasting memories of this historic event. "The project is designed to encourage children to have fun while learning at the same time – and to be rewarded for their efforts with something that they can keep forever, and perhaps read to their own children one day!” Bradford Council is working in partnership with the West Yorkshire Lieutenancy Office to encourage communities to take part in the celebrations by organising their own projects and events.

Pakistan has secured a seat on the important United Nations Security Council Sajjad Karim, Member of the European Parliament for the North West of England, has welcomed news that Pakistan has secured a seat on the important United Nations Security Council. The contested election gives Pakistan a 2 year term on the Council alongside India who were also elected for 2 years in January this year . Sajjad Karim, who chairs the European Parliament’s Friends of Pakistan Group, has congratulated both countries who have pledged to work together. This comes in the same week that India has withdrawn objections to EU-PK assistance at World Trade Organisation. This has opened the door to increased transactions between the 2 countries with the aim of breaking a 60 year deadlock in trade which has damaged the economies of both countries. Commenting in the positive news Mr Karim said: “It’s not often we have two pieces of good news in one week!

The potential gains to both Pakistan and India from increasing economic ties are very substantial and may also help resolve broader historic political issues.” said Sajjad. “However, we must remember that India and Pakistan have an outstanding issue at UN level relating to Kashmir and I encourage them to use this time to open dialogue. “It is essential for world peace that they build peace in South Asia and there is a responsibility for both countries to work to this end.”

Banks were among the biggest risers in London, with taxpayer-backed Lloyds and Royal Bank of Scotland up 4% and 3% respectively and Barclays gaining 6%. Yusuf Heusen, sales trader at IG Index, said: "The market is holding quite resolutely around the 5,400 level, when arguably there could have been a strong case for simply pulling money off the table, given the uncertainty that seems to lie ahead." But he warned that current market rises could be the "calm before the storm" because more falls are on the cards if the markets are not satisfied that any new measures will be sufficient to deal with the crisis. Markets have fluctuated wildly in recent months amid fears that Greece and possibly other eurozone nations could default on their debts, which could trigger another banking crash and tip the world economy back into recession.

IEA: Many Months to Re- Greek Parliament store Libya's Oil Output Adopts Austerity Plan An expert at the International Energy Agency says it may be "many months" before Libya's damaged oil industry can resume full production. The head of IEA's Oil Industry and Markets Division, David Fyfe, said Thursday there are "many logistical, operational and secu-

The Bloomberg financial news service says production fell drastically, and recovered to to only 100,00 barrels per day last month. Earlier this year, uprisings in Libya and other oil-producing

energy markets. That effort ended in midSeptember. The death of former Libyan leader Gadhafi appeared to have little impact on the world price of crude oil. At one point, the price declined by nearly two dollars in New York trading. Bloomberg attributed the change to investor worries that Europe's continuing financial problems.

The Greek Parliament adopted new austerity measures Thursday to satisfy its international creditors after a day of violent street protests against the government's latest move to boost taxes and cut wages. All but one of the ruling Socialist lawmakers voted for the budget-cutting plan. The vote virtually ensures that Greece will secure an $11 billion segment of its $159 billion bailout from last year and avoid a default next month on its international loans. But even as Greece moved to help itself, efforts to resolve Europe's cascading debt crisis fell into disarray. European leaders are set for a summit in Brussels on Sunday. But late Thursday, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Nicolas Sarkozy called a second summit for next Wednesday after it became clear the leaders of Europe's two biggest economies could not reach agreement on a

comprehensive debt plan in time for the weekend gathering. The German and French leaders said they would meet Saturday to prepare what they called a "global and ambitious answer" to the debt crisis engulfing the 17-nation bloc that uses the common euro currency and for weeks has roiled international financial markets. Merkel and Sarkozy said they would seek to strengthen the continent's bailout fund, boost funding for banks and reinforce "economic integration" throughout the eurozone. They said all aspects of the debt contagion would be "profoundly examined" at the Sunday summit, with adoption of a plan no later than Wednesday. The Greek vote came after hours of violent anti-austerity protests in Athens. At least 50,000 mostly peaceful, anti-austerity protesters gathered in Syntagma Square.

Council outlines detailed proposals for early years services

Manchester City Council has outlined detailed proposals for how it will deliver early years services for children aged 0-5 and their families. The proposals, contained in a report to be considered by the council’s Executive on Wednesday 14 September, outline a more targeted approach which will focus on identifying and supporting the most vulnerable children, and their parents, to give them the best start in life while moving away from providing ‘universal’ services including daycare. If approved by the Executive, the proposals will be the basis of a consultation running from 3 October 2011 to January 2012, with the Executive taking a final decision on 18 January 2012. The proposed changes would not be immediate and would take place on a phased basis up to March 2015, to ensure everything is in place to allow them to work effectively. Under the new early years proposals every family of a newborn will be visited at home by an outreach worker who will stay in touch until the child is three. Experts consider that the first three years of life are absolutely fundamental to a child’s future development. This new outreach approach builds on the success of a pilot scheme carried out in Ardwick, to ensure vulnerable families are identified and sup

It is also proposed that the council will gradually withdraw from providing daycare on a phased basis, when and where suitable alternatives are available. Manchester City Council currently provides only 11 per cent of daycare places for 0-5 year olds in the city but there is evidence that non-council operators have plentiful spare places. Call to double gas storage capacity

The UK must increase current amounts of gas storage to reduce the impact of energy price spikes, as part of efforts to secure supplies and keep the lights on, MPs have urged. A report by the Commons Energy and Climate Change Committee warned that the UK can only store 14 days of gas supply, compared to France's 87 days and Germany's 69 days of supplies, and should

double storage capacity by 2020. The committee criticised the Government for making an "opportunistic raid" on UK continental shelf oil and gas producers with a £2 billion levy in the 2011 Budget, warning such actions could damage investor confidence in home-grown fossil fuel production. Greater energy efficiency will be "vital" not only for improving energy security the report said.

Spotify recently announced a deal with Facebook to bring streaming and sharing to the social network's 800 million users.

ARM has introduced Big.Little technology

The system provides a recipe for chaining chips of differing architectures together via an interconnect to maximise power efficiency without having to concede on computational oomph. The Cambridge chip designer said it has applied Big.Little to couple up to four dual-core Cortex-A7 processors with up to four dual-core Cortex-A15 processors, via a CCI-400 Coherent Interconnect. It allows a device to power down to just an A7 core when per forming trivial com

puting tasks, such as syncing data or browsing simple websites, and to transition to an A15 processor when performing a more difficult task, such as playing a game or encoding a video. "There's an increasing demand for what we'd call low-level types of tasks," Tom Cronk, deputy manager of ARM's processor division, said at press launch. "It's becoming increasingly difficult to serve that within a single-processor implementation."

Deadly Fungus Threat to England Trees

Lawson cypress are vulnerable to the pathogen

London: Trees in parks and gardens are at risk from a killer disease which has arrived in England for the first time. Lawson cypress trees are vulnerable to the deadly fungus which has already decimated their populations in parts of the US and Canada. Forestry Commission scientists have found trees infected with Phytophthora lateralis in Plymouth. They have warned it could quickly spread to other parts of the country where the trees — prized for their vibrant colours — are popular in landscaped gardens, churchyards and stately homes. Gardeners who spot signs of it have been urged to report it immediately so the tree can be removed, as the infection can spread through soil and on tools. In diseased trees, the leaves turn a lighter shade of olive-grey than healthy trees, then they wither and turn reddish-brown as the foliage dies.

The infection extends from the roots and up the stem, killing the inner bark so the entire tree dies. It is not clear how the disease arrived in Britain but outbreaks have recently been recorded in Scotland and Northern Ireland, France and The Netherlands. The bug is harmless to humans and animals and most other plants. John Morgan, head of plant health for the Forestry Commission, said: "It is very worrying to find this destructive tree pathogen so far from previous cases in Scotland and we are working hard to contain the disease quickly to try to trace where it came from." The disease is thought to have originated in Asia before being introduced to North America through the nursery industry. It is the latest bug to threaten Britain's trees.Last year, experts issued a warning about Sudden Oak Death.

Remember that Facebook friend request you got from an elementary school classmate you don't remember? Good thing you accepted it. New research shows a direct link between the number of Facebook "friends" and brain size. A study conducted at University College London found that social ne workingusers with the greatest number

of online friends had moregray matter in part of their brains, according to findings published this week in the British biological research journal, Proceedings of the Royal Society. The brain regions with more gray matter, according to the paper, included those affecting the creation of memories of faces and names, and those that help us social cues, such as

body language. "Our findings demonstrate that the size of an individual's online social network is closely linked to focal brain structure implicated in social cognition," researchers said. The researchers questioned 125 college students about their Facebook friends while conducting magnetic resonance imaging to create brain scans.

Cameron backs military care scheme

( U K PA ) - D a v i d Cameron has met British military veterans who have lost limbs serving their country, as the Government announced it is investing up to £15 million to improve NHS care for amputee former service personnel. Specialist prosthetic and rehabilitation centres will open across the country, the Department of Health said. The move is in response to a review commissioned after armed forces charities raised concerns

that the civilian health service could not support amputee veterans to the same standard provided at the military's Headley Court rehabilitation centre in Surrey, where the Prime Minister met patients and staff. David Cameron said: "I am passionately committed to our armed forces. As a country and as a Government we have a particular duty to servicemen and women injured on operational duty. EU Referendum-A Big Deal for David Cameron The Government has won a vote against holding a referendum on Britain's future in the EU - but as many as 82 Tory MPs defied the Prime Minister. David Cameron had issued a last-minute appeal to his MPs as he faced the biggest rebellion of his leadership. Tory backbenchers had been ordered to vote against the motion calling for a referendum on whether the UK should remain in the EU , leave it or renegotiate its membership. However, dozens of and backbenchers junior members of the Government defied orders. In the end, the Government comfortably won the vote with a majority of 372.

But the 111 ayes for the motion included up to 80 Conservative MPs - a significant assault on Mr Cameron's authority. Before the House began debating the motion, the PM insisted now was not the right time for a referendum. "Those who are supporting today's motion, but don't actually want to leave the EU I say to you, I respect your views, we disagree about ends, not about means," he said. "I support your aims. Like you, I want to see fundamental reform. Like you, I want to refashion our membership of the EU so it better serves our nation's interest. "The time for reform is coming, that is the prize. Let us not be

distracted from seizing it." Conservative MP Adam Holloway told the House he was resigning his unpaid Government job as a parliamentary private secretary (PPS) in order to be able to vote for a referendum. "If you can't support a particular policy, then the honest course of action is to stand down," he said. "I want decisions to be made more closely by the people they affect, by local communities, not upwards towards Brussels. "I'm not now prepared to go back on my words to my constituents." Parliamentary aide Stewart Jackson also effectively fell on his sword, telling MPs:

For me constituency and country must come before the baubles of ministerial office." Labour leader Ed Miliband said the revolt, which could see two ministerial aides resigning, was a "humiliation" for Prime Minister David cameron

If he can't win the argument with his own backbenchers, how can the country have confidence that he can win the arguments that matter for Britain?" he said. High-profile rebels included Graham Brady, chairman of the influential backbench 1922 committee, and its secretary

Mark Pritchard. Select committee chairman also voted against the government, including John Whittingdale, Culture, Media and Sport, and Northern Ireland committee chairman Laurence Robertson. David held a round of last minute face-toface meetings with eurosceptics.
