General rob Bonta has issued two consumer alerts to protect the state’s undocumented immigrants from scams and remind them about their immigration rights. the alerts also serve as a reminder that state and local authorities are barred from assisting federal agencies, such as the U.s Immigration and Customs enforcement (ICe), with deportations and other enforcement. state and local law enforcement cannot ask for your immigration status for immigration enforcement purposes,” one of the alerts stated.

“California law expressly prohibits law enforcement from inquiring about a person’s immigration status for immigration enforcement purposes.” the sanctuary state law – also known as the California Values Act – that took effect in 2018 limits cooperation by local government agencies with federal immigration authorities.

mANILA — the vice president and past presidents of the country are no longer part of the National security Council, under a new executive order issued by President ferdinand marcos Jr. to ensure that the NsC could “adapt to evolving challenges.” executive order 81, signed by executive secretary Lucas Bersamin on Dec. 30, reorganized the NsC. Bersamin said eo 81 aims to “streamline” NsC membership.

“At the moment, the VP is not considered relevant to the responsibilities of membership in the NsC,” he said. “Nonetheless, when the need arises, the eo reserves to the president the power to add members or advisers.” the NsC is now composed of the following: the president as chairperson, senate president, speaker of the house of representatives, senate president pro-tempore, three deputy speakers to be designated by the speaker, and the majority and minority floor

mANILA — security officials in the Philippines are "coordinating very closely" with their foreign counterparts to find out the origin and purpose of an unmanned underwater drone that was discovered in the waters off masbate earlier this week.

the underwater device, discovered by fishermen near Barangay Iniwaran in san Pascual on December 30, appears to be a reconnaissance and surveillance drone based on an initial assessment, said Jonathan malaya, assistant director general

What's concerning is that it was found within our country's archipelagic waters, specifically in the masbate area of the Bicol region," malaya said in mixed english and filipino in a televised interview on friday, January 3.

trump faced a string of legal challenges, including his conviction on 34 felony counts in his home city of New York.

Despite his court battles and controversies, he managed to pull off a convincing victory over Vice President Kamala harris in last year’s presidential race, securing 312 electoral votes against his rival’s 226. trump, the first U.s. leader to be convicted of a crime, also won the popular vote, garnering 77.28 million votes against harris’ 75 million.

In a recent statement, marcos said he is looking forward to working with trump on various issues that would benefit the Philippines and the U.s marcos also expressed optimism that trump’s “robust leadership” would result in a better future for the two countries.

“President trump has won, and the American people have triumphed. I congratulate them on their victory in an exercise that showed the world the strength of American values,” marcos said following the results of the U.s. presidential elections in November last year.

“I am hopeful that this unshakeable alliance, tested in war and peace, will be a force for good, blazing a path of prosperity and amity in the region and on both sides of the

Positive momentum meanwhile, the Department of foreign Affairs (DfA) said the Philippines looks forward to working with the incoming trump administration, continuing the positive momentum in economic, security and defense cooperation between the two countries.

the DfA welcomed the call between marcos and trump on Nov. 19.

the agency noted the congratulatory call, described by marcos as very friendly and productive, underscored the positive momentum and trajectory in the Philippines’ bilateral relations with the U.s and highlighted the positive role of filipino-Americans in U.s society, including in the recent successful and peaceful conduct of U.s. elections. the United states remains an important ally, partner and friend to the Philippines. Under eo 81, the director general of the National Intelligence Coordinating Agency as well as the chiefs of the Armed forces of the Philippines, Philippine National Police and National Bureau of Investigation shall attend the NsC meetings as may be necessary to advise and assist in its deliberations. the governor of the Bangko sentral ng Pilipinas may also be invited to participate in the NsC. the eo also reorganized the executive committee of the NsC. It is now composed of the president as chairperson; executive secretary; senate president or his representative; house speaker or his representative; national security adviser; secretaries of foreign affairs, justice, defense, interior and local government, and “such other members or advisers as the president may designate from time to time.”

marcos cited “the need to further guarantee that the NsC remains a resilient national security institution, capable of adapting to evolving challenges and opportunities both domestically and internationally.”

he also cited the need “to ensure that its council members uphold and protect national security and sovereignty, thereby fostering

an environment conducive to effective governance and stability.” the reorganization of the NsC came amid the worsening rift between marcos and his former ally, Vice President sara Duterte.

Created during the Quirino administration through eo 330 in 1950, the NsC is “the principal advisory body in the proper coordination and integration of plans and policies relating to or with implications on national security.”

eo 115 issued in 1986 reorganized the NsC and defined its membership, functions and authority.

marcos said eo 33 issued in 1992 and eo 34 issued in 2001 “reconstituted” the NsC to further enhance coordination between the executive and Legislative branches in the formulation and integration of policies affecting national security.

marcos cited eo 292, which authorizes the president to appoint such other government officials and private individuals as members of the council.

National security Adviser eduardo Año defended the president’s reorganization of the NsC.

“the purpose of reorganization is to enhance the formulation of policies relating to national security, so that actions and decisions thereon by the president rests on sound advice and accurate information. It is also premised on the need for timely and coherent action to address current and emerging threats to national security,”

Año said in a statement on friday, January 3.

he said the composition of the council is always subject to the authority of president. the Administrative Code of 1987 vests the president with the continuing authority to reorganize the administrative structure of the office of the President, of which the NsC is a part. moreover, section 17, Article VII of the Constitution vests in the president the power of control over all executive departments, bureaus and offices,” Año said.

he said past Philippine presidents have reorganized the composition of the NsC to meet the president’s requirements and changing conditions.

Previous presidents had also

reorganized the NsC, according to Año. marcos’ father, ferdinand marcos sr., reorganized the NsC under eo 396 in 1972; Corazon Aquino under eo 115 in 1986 and eo 292 in 1987; fidel ramos under eo 33 in 1992 and Gloria macapagal-Arroyo under eo 34 in 2001, Año said.

In an open letter in November last year, Duterte lashed out at the NsC for investigating her assassination threat against marcos.

“National security pertains to the protection of our sovereignty, the safety of the filipino population and the preservation of our democratic institutions. the function of the National security Council is confined to the formulation of policies in furtherance of such pursuits,” she said. “As a member of the National security Council (eo 115 Dec. 24, 1986), I do not recall receiving a single notice of meeting since June 30, 2022. I request the NsA to please send to me the notarized minutes of all meetings conducted by the Council from June 30, 2022, if any. I want to review what the council has accomplished so far, in terms of policies and recommendations for national security,” Duterte said.

marcos has not convened the NsC since assuming the presidency in 2022, according to PCo secretary Cesar Chavez.

During a press conference in November, the vice president said she ordered a member of her security team to kill the president, first Lady Liza marcos and marcos’ cousin, house speaker martin romualdez, in the event of her own death.

marcos has vowed to resist a “disturbing” plot of the vice president to have him assassinated. meanwhile, Duterte has remained mum on her and former President rodrigo Duterte’s removal from the NsC.

As of friday afternoon, January 3, the vice president has yet to issue any statement regarding eo 81, despite requests from the media.

office of the Vice President media relations officer John Carlo Cahinhinan told reporters that all requests for a statement had been “relayed already” to the vice president. (With reports from Elizabeth Marcelo)

mANILA — Nearly five years after CoVID-19 was first reported, the World health organization (Who) warned that the disease continues to spread unpredictably and causes severe illness worldwide.

According to Who, reduced surveillance and inconsistent prevention efforts are making it tougher to track and manage the virus effectively.

A now archived timeline by the Who detailed that on December 31, 2019, the Wuhan municipal health Commission in China reported a cluster of cases of pneumonia in Wuhan, hubei Province. following this, a novel coronavirus was eventually identified.

Nearly five years after this incident, Who noted that while there are periodic waves of the disease in some countries, the sArs-CoV-2 virus, which causes

CoVID-19, “largely circulates without clear seasonality” and continues to infect individuals, causing severe acute disease and post-CoVID-19 condition (PCC).

By the numbers

In a special edition of its epidemiological update on CoVID-19, Who reported that, from the start of the pandemic until November 10, 2024, there were over 776.8 million confirmed cases of CoVID-19 and more than 7 million confirmed deaths. these figures were reported across 234 countries, areas, and territories.

Between early 2020 and early 2022, CoVID-19 cases skyrocketed from 414,000 to nearly 10 million per week, peaking at 21 million in January 2022. By mid-2022, cases began to drop, partly due to less testing and fewer countries reporting cases. Weekly cases continued to decline, falling from 1.3 million in early 2023 to just 70,000 by

early 2024. Who explained that 95 percent of the total CoVID-19related deaths were reported in 2020, 2021, and 2022.

“Increased immunity from infection and/or vaccination resulted in a significant decrease in deaths from the second half of 2022,” Who said.

Weekly reported CoVID-19 deaths rose sharply from 21,000 in early 2020 to a peak of 99,000 in January 2021. By the end of 2021, official reports counted 5.49 million deaths, but Who estimates suggest the true toll for 2020-2021 was much higher at 14.91 million.

Deaths steadily declined afterward, dropping to 33,000 in early 2022, 13,000 by late 2022, 8,000 in early 2023, 2,400 by late

with heightened hate crimes, funding cut for ethnic media

As hate crimes reach their highest curve in recent years, California ethnic media face an end to critical state funding.

media representatives learned that the stop the hate (sth) program, administered by the state Department of social services, would not be renewed for the 2025 fiscal year, even as a new incoming federal administration promotes a heightened rhetoric of hatred against American minorities.

Between 2019 and 2022 alone, reported hate-motivated crimes more than doubled in California from 1,015 to 2,120.

Julian Do, co-director of the newswire ethnic media services, confirmed that sth funds will end in December this year; in the last two years, the program delivered over $14 million to at least 62 ethnic media outlets statewide to cover and combat this hate in their communities.

‘The fear will be great’

“We are in a situation with more urgency than ever,” said mireya olivera, director and founder of the weekly newspaper Impulso, mainly serving the oaxacan community in downtown and west Los Angeles, and other indigenous-speaking Zapotec and mixtec communities.

“With trump’s arrival in the White house, things are going to get worse for all ethnic communities. funds are of the utmost importance so that we can keep the community informed if they are victims of this type of crime,” she continued. “to make sure the community is informed and not afraid to report a hate crime, more human resources are needed.”

thanks to this year’s sth grant, her newspaper was able to report hate crimes every time they heard of one; held multiple on-site hate crime prevention workshops where she invited her community to talk with experts on the subject; and participated in other education events with local nonprofit community organizations.

olivera said that what worries her the most is that

if people don’t see the media covering hate crimes, the new presidential administration rhetoric of mass deportation will encourage people to remain silent: “the fear will be great and we will not find out about many cases if people no longer report the crimes.”

‘Our situation is urgent’

fatmeh Bhakit, editor of Al enteshar Newspaper serving the Arab and muslim community in southern California, said “It makes no sense to get support for one year to get people involved to know what to do in case of a hate crime, and suddenly not to continue. People will be surprised to see that we cover this issue much less than before. they will be more afraid, while the hate continues.”

the Los Angeles County human relations Commission data shows that from 2022 to 2023 there was a 45% increase in reported hate crimes — the highest since the county began recording them in 1980.

Crimes against Arabs and muslims totaled 64 — the highest number ever recorded for this group.

With state support, she wrote articles covering local hate crimes for Al enteshar; created 18 newsletters on the topic; and held community events in san Diego, orange and Los Angeles Counties encouraging local community members to report this rising hate.

Bhakit said many Arab and muslim Americans are not inclined to report hate crimes at all, because they do not trust the authorities or the police. since large and local mainstream media don’t consistently cover the middle eastern community, without her media reporting on this issue, their fears would only increase.

“our situation is urgent,” she explained. “our community has been persecuted since the september 11 attacks, then trump came along, then the war in Gaza, and now the president who already imposed a ban on the entry of the muslim community in 2016 is back again.” this community — especially women who wear a

hijab — suffers harassment in schools, in the workplace, and on the street,” Bakhit added.

“ethnic media is already suffering from low advertising funds, and if we add state funding, the situation does not look good next year.”

‘We have to keep fighting’ one of the groups that suffered the highest percentage of 2023 hate crimes, according to the Los Angeles County report, was the AfricanAmerican community, which ended with 320 attacks — a 49% increase compared to the previous year, and the highest in the group’s recorded history.

Brian townsend, director of the Precinct reporter, a newspaper that has served the local African-American community since 1965, said he was not surprised by these high numbers. that has always been the case,” said townsend. “there are so many groups under attack now, but of all of them, African-Americans have always had the worst numbers. And on top of that, now they want to eliminate the funds that keep us fighting hate.”

An october 2024 Gallup survey revealed that only 3 out of 10 Americans support mass media.

“We publish the stories that interest our community. they know us and trust us. they see us as their defenders. We have been publishing for almost 60 years with integrity, contrary to corporate media, which come and go. they are not part of the community.”

townsend added that difficult times are coming, “but we have to keep fighting.”

‘You can hate me, but do not hurt me’ rose Davis, executive director of indigeneusnetwork. org and indianvoices.net, said her own project to counteract hate began very organically: she began researching her heritage, used the information in a newsletter she created, and “eventually it became a community. We have nurtured it and made it grow ever since.” thanks to sth funds, Davis’ work and community grew. Currently, in addition to distributing 4,000 u PAGE A5

Camarines sur rep. Gabriel Bordado and farmer’s party-list AAmBIs-oWA rep. Lex Anthony Cris Colada endorsed the third complaint.

In seeking Duterte’s impeachment, the group said Duterte committed “culpable violation of the constitution; bribery; graft and corruption; plunder; malversation and

technical malversation and betrayal of public trust.”

the 1987 Constitution provides that the house speaker has a maximum of 10 session days to include an impeachment complaint in the order of business in the plenary and a maximum of three session days to refer it to the house justice committee.

“We will push to have one effort so that we can also push the marcos government and the house leadership to continue the impeachment,” Castro said. she said a recent survey showed that at least half of the members of the house of representatives were supportive of the impeachment moves against Duterte.

Immigrants are advised to seek legal assistance only from lawyers, accredited representatives and recognized organizations who can represent them in immigration court.

the alerts remind the immigrant community about their rights, including access to emergency medical care, securing housing without sharing their immigration status and a workplace free of harassment and discrimination.

house secretary general reginald Velasco earlier said their legal team was still verifying the three impeachment complaints before deciding to transmit them to the office of the speaker.

Velasco said some members of the house were requesting for an extension because they were considering filing another impeachment complaint, the fourth.

“they did not say yet how many will endorse it,” he said.

Velasco also said that 10 to 12 congressmen, belonging to both the majority and the minority bloc, were planning to endorse one of the three impeachment complaints already filed against Duterte. n

older adults aged 65 and above remain the most vulnerable to severe CoVID-19 and death. In contrast, children under 15 account for just 0.2 percent of global reported CoVID-19 deaths, with 60 percent of those occurring in children under five.

however, Who noted that while the overall deaths among children under 15 have decreased since 2020, the share of deaths among children under five has grown, rising to 68 percent in 2023 and 75 percent in 2024 of all reported deaths in this age group.

“Although the global Who CoVID-19 database does not have the further age breakdown, the Who clinical platform report, which analyzed the data from 50,351 children and adolescents, found that infants have the highest mortality risk, comparable to that of adults aged 20-45 years,” the UN agency added.

Less hospitalization, long COVID persists

Between January 2020 and November 2024, over 28 million CoVID-19 hospitalizations were reported globally, making up about 5 percent of confirmed cases. hospitalizations peaked at 526,000 weekly in early 2021 but dropped to 13,000 by 2024 as vaccinations and immunity increased.

ICU admissions and deaths per 1,000 hospitalizations also declined significantly, though changes in reporting make recent trends harder to analyze.

Who also reported that post-CoVID-19 condition (PCC), also known as “long CoVID,” remains a significant burden on health systems.

“At the present time, with differences in case definitions used by member states, limited studies and resources for PCC, it is challenging to estimate the incidence of PCC with high precision, but available data from multiple countries suggests that approximately 6 percent of symptomatic sArsCoV-2 infections resulted in PCC,” said Who the UN agency discovered that the majority of long CoVID cases originate from mild infections rather than severe ones. this is largely due to the high number of people infected over the past five years. Additionally, vaccination has been shown to reduce the risk of developing long CoVID. Global vaccine rollout

When the CoVID-19 vaccine rollout started in 2021, higher-income countries initially had higher vaccination rates. By the end of 2023, about 2 in 3 people worldwide had completed their primary CoVID-19 vaccine series, and 1 in 3 had received at least one booster.

randall Yip, publisher and editor of Bay Area-based statewide outlet AsAmNews, said “When you ask members of the Asian community why they come to our website, one of the top reasons is to find out what is happening with hate crimes,” explained randall. “It’s something that they find very determining in their lives — especially since 2020, and now again with trump’s rhetoric against China.”

If funding is withdrawn for ethnic media, the community’s ability to protect itself “will suffer,” he continued.

“Without trusted publications reminding people of the importance of reporting hate crimes and showing them where to report them, people will not do it. they are very afraid, either because they don’t have documents, or because they don’t trust the authorities … that makes it very difficult.”

In the Los Angeles County report, hate crimes against the Asian community increased by 31% from 2022 to 2023 — the second-highest number in the group’s history.

Yip said the perception that immigrants are stealing from this country was a major contributor to anti-Asian hate. state funding allowed

AsAmNews to fight this view through coverage engaging audiences that held it, and changing their misperceptions about the Asian community.

“Crime is not the result of migration, it is poverty, social problems, and sometimes mental problems, but it has nothing to do with immigration,” he added.

“study after study publishes that immigrants are good contributors to society; they pay more money to the federal government than they receive, but it seems that no one listens.

Now with these funding cuts, it’ll be harder than ever to get people to listen.” n

No dodging accountability

It appears that while most Filipinos were busy with recent holiday festivities, an operative of the Philippine offshore gaming operators (POGOs) had tried to pull a fast one on the country’s bendable judicial system.

“I have received reports that there are officials in the Bureau of Immigration (BI) who attempted to push for the release on bail of tony Yang,” sen. risa hontiveros said on monday, December 30, referring to the older brother of michael Yang, the purported economic adviser of former President rodrigo Duterte.

In a statement, the BI confirmed that a petition had been filed on Dec. 16 to grant bail to the detained businessman based on a medical certification from the house of representatives, but that its approval was not guaranteed. the fact that a petition was even filed speaks volumes about how lightly Yang and his lawyer consider his transgressions, and how low their regard must be for some government agencies and their officials who could be “persuaded” to look the other way.

Abuse of PH laws

the bail attempt is the latest indication of how personalities linked to illegal PoGo hubs notorious for hosting criminal activities like cyber scams, money laundering, and human trafficking have tried to escape accountability under Philippine laws.

Yang was arrested on sept. 19 by agents from BI and the Presidential Anti-organized Crime Commission (PAoCC) at a manila airport, with his arrest said to be “critical” to Congress’ investigation on the criminal networks behind PoGos. In a senate hearing, Yang admitted to being Yang Jian Xin, a Chinese national who managed to secure fraudulent government documents, including a Philippine birth certificate, to be able to do business as a filipino citizen.

oN January 20, 2025, Donald J. trump will be sworn in at the West Lawn of the U.s. Capitol as the 47th president of the United states. thousands of visitors are expected to come to Washington, D.C. to take part in this historic event in one way or another – with the National mall teeming with spectators and thousands lining up along Pennsylvania Avenue to watch the president’s entourage make their way to the White house during the ceremonial parade.

As early as october, luxury hotels in Washington were already getting fully booked, with reservations blocked out from Jan. 14 to 21 and room rates increasing by as much as 1,000 percent. According to Destination D.C., a non-profit corporation that supports the travel and tourism sector, bookings for the inauguration weekend are now at 50 percent and expected to go higher as Jan. 20 comes closer, since hotel occupancy rates usually surpass 90 percent during inaugurations.

facing complaints from the National Bureau of Investigation Northern mindanao for falsifying public documents, committing perjury, and violating the anti-alias law.

“We have seen plenty of evidence proving his abuse of Philippine policies, and yet, he will be released? We have seen how easy it was for Guo hua Ping to slip out,” hontiveros said, referring to former Bamban, tarlac mayor Alice Guo.

Attempts to leave PH In August, it was reported that Guo had fled to malaysia and singapore en route to Indonesia in mid-July after her ties to illegal PoGos and fake filipino citizenship were exposed. With information from Indonesian authorities, Guo was arrested and deported back to the Philippines in september.

Yang could have been similarly attempting to leave the Philippines when he was caught, the PAoCC said, because he was carrying P1.4 million cash and other currencies, a Philippine passport, and a gun permit issued to a certain Antonio maestrado Lim, his supposed filipino alias. should we still believe that Yang would adhere to the law?” asked hontiveros, who co-chairs the upper chamber’s investigation into PoGos. he can get medical attention if he needs it, “but he should remain under government custody,” she added.

Yang has previously denied his involvement in the PoGo service provider oroone Corp. and said the company was only leasing his property and sought his help to get the needed business permits. hontiveros easily demolished the claim by presenting documents showing Yang as president and majority shareholder of the company.

Trial balloon

Yang’s attempts to dodge accountability for

his involvement in illegal PoGo activities should prompt Justice secretary Jesus remulla to file criminal charges against him posthaste, as he had said earlier. A hold departure order should also be issued against this possible flight risk. Given its record of accommodating foreign nationals who bend the rules for “certain considerations” as in the case of the “pastillas scam” where working visas were issued to Chinese nationals in exchange for cash, the BI itself should strictly monitor its personnel who could collude with Yang’s representatives to allow him to slip out of the country. for its part, the Anti-money Laundering Council should heed hontiveros’ call and speed up its investigation of Yang’s alleged money laundering activities so that the proper charges can be filed.

he cannot escape accountability,” hontiveros said, referring to the bail attempt as a possible “trial balloon” among some officials on how far they can go tolerating, even enabling, such legal maneuverings meant to evade the law before filipinos raise an outcry.

Prosecuting Yang should be the first order of business among law enforcement and judicial agencies at the start of the year. With money from criminal elements freely flowing into campaign coffers to secure their protectors’ election or reelection in may, this is no time for complacency or dillydallying. the message should be clear and uncompromising, that the government is serious about going after those who would use lapses in law enforcement with impunity for personal gain. A complete list on road closures will be issued by the D.C. metropolitan Police Department a day before the inauguration, but definitely, streets around the inauguration area and the ceremonial parade will be closed throughout the day for security purposes. Because the inauguration is considered a “National special security event” with U.s. political leaders and foreign dignitaries in attendance, security plans are very stringent, with the U.s secret service as the lead federal agency with support from other entities that include the U.s Capitol Police, the metropolitan Police Department and the Joint task force-National Capital region (composed of service members from all branches of the U.s. Armed forces, including reserve and National Guard components). According to the Joint task force Commanding General, they will be deploying as many as 12,000 in the parade, of whom 5,000 are service members. Although the Jtf did not issue an estimate on crowd size, inaugurations can draw over one million attendees, requiring mammoth logistics and security preparations.

During the January 2021 inauguration of President Biden, security preparations were also strict because of the CoVID-19 pandemic. the rising number of cases prompted the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies to limit the number of dignitaries in attendance. the atmosphere at the 2021 Biden inauguration was very different from the 1989 inauguration of President George Bush sr., which I also happened to attend. the National mall was mostly empty, with around 200,000 small flags planted across the mall in lieu of Americans who were unable to attend, while the streets were relatively quiet. for the Biden inauguration, we were bused in by the state Department that planned and coordinated the health protocols that were implemented for the invited diplomats. We all wore masks, and social distancing (six feet apart) in reserved seating arrangements was observed during the entire event.

from all indications, President trump’s inauguration will be an “all out” celebration with fireworks displays and performances by

celebrities. top companies that include Amazon, meta and Uber reportedly pledged millions of dollars to the inaugural committee. Automotive industry giants ford and General motors are giving generous donations and will supply vehicles for the event. ABC News also reported that the upcoming inauguration has already surpassed the $150-million fundraising goal – by far larger than the $107 million raised during the first inauguration of President trump. Washington officials are certainly happy that the “inauguration is back” because it would also mean a boost to the local economy, since people go shopping and dining and visit other attractions as well, with various business establishments offering special packages for tourists. Certainly, the city is looking forward to hosting people from all over the country who will explore and experience the unique charms of Washington, and this in itself is a “win,” according to deputy mayor for planning and economic development Nina Albert.

traditionally since the 1800s, no foreign head of state is

“CLoUDY crystal balls” was the title of an article I wrote in early 2020, which proved to be an apt description of how economic conditions worldwide were to unfold that year. the International monetary fund (Imf) in the January 2020 release of its World economic outlook projected a 3.3 percent global GDP growth for that year. At the end of the year, it turned out to be—3.3 percent—the right number, but the wrong sign; instead of growing, the world economy shrank by that much. the Imf projected a 5.8 percent GDP growth for “emerging and Developing Asia,” a grouping that includes us and 29 other Asia-Pacific countries. the actual

number turned out to be negative 1.0 percent. of course, no one had anticipated how the CoVID-19 pandemic was to batter the world economy in 2020. even barring anything as cataclysmic as the pandemic, the year 2025 holds several uncertainties that make economic crystal balling a challenging exercise. Among the most prominent drivers is the direction the American economy will take under the second presidency of Donald trump. the problem is that we can’t take trump’s bold policy pronouncements in his presidential campaign and after his election victory at face value, because of the inherent contradictions therein. Assuming he will appoint and listen to competent economists to manage the U.s. economy (on which there are doubts because he often ignores good advice, and given some people he has named to

key positions so far), one can reasonably expect that there will be deliberate downplaying, if not backtracking, on some of his promised economic policies. What is clear is that the U.s dollar has strengthened since trump’s election victory, on the general anticipation that his administration will be friendly to American business, especially big business. But the wide mass of consumers will be hurt by his threat of even higher tariffs on imports from China, mexico, and other countries from which the U.s. buys much more than it sells to, as it will mean higher prices and escalated inflation. this has led the U.s federal reserve (the U.s. central bank, aka the fed) to moderate its previously announced interest rate reductions in 2025, after making a recent 25-basis point (i.e., a 0.25 percentage point) reduction. this fed signal that it is soft-pedaling

on interest rate cuts bolsters a seeming consensus among many analysts that the U.s. dollar will strengthen as trump assumes the presidency in January, and will remain strong, at least in the next year. the economist recently wrote that trump’s economic policies “look set to turbocharge the greenback.” here at home, the U.s fed’s December rate reduction has given the Bangko sentral ng Pilipinas (BsP) more comfort to do a similar 25-basis point reduction to help stimulate more economic activity. even so, the BsP will watch the movement of the peso vs the U.s. dollar as the latter is projected to remain strong (which translates to downward pressure on the peso). Will it spell trouble for the Philippine economy? the BsP is less worried about the exchange rate per se than it is about inflation, but it could worry to the extent that peso depreciation begins to fuel higher inflation. this could force the BsP to raise interest rates

invited for the inauguration, with only foreign ambassadors representing their countries in Washington, D.C. getting invited. however, President trump has issued invitations verbally to a few world leaders such as Italian Prime minister Giorgia meloni, Argentinian President Javier milei (who posted on X that he will be attending) and Chinese President Xi Jinping. It is unclear whether President Xi accepted the invitation or will be attending the inauguration. President trump has promised to make America great again – and according to a survey by global Ceo consulting and advisory company teneo, global investors are optimistic about the economy, believing that the “trump effect” will generate a lot of positive economic activity that will create more jobs and greater levels of U.s. and foreign investment. for the Philippines, we are pleased with the appointments made by President trump, such as florida senator marco rubio as secretary of state. senator rubio has been sympathetic to the Philippines, visiting tacloban City in the aftermath of typhoon haiyan in January 2014 and vowing more aid for rehabilitation efforts. other appointments are Cerberus Capital management chairman steve feinberg for Deputy secretary of Defense. he relentlessly pursued the Cerberus investment in the abandoned subic Bay shipyard which today employs thousands of filipino workers, with additional investments expected to pour in. We are also pleased that elbridge Colby has been appointed Undersecretary of Defense for Policy, who is acknowledged as a lead architect for the 2018 U.s National security strategy. We also have a very strong bipartisan support from the U.s. Congress. Additionally, President ferdinand marcos Jr. during his congratulatory call to President trump re-established his personal relationship with the incoming U.s. president, whom he met in New York many years ago with his mother, former first Lady Imelda marcos. anew and stifle economic growth in the process. that is why our economic managers, and those of other countries, will be closely watching out for the effects of trump’s actions in the months ahead, particularly their effect on the U.s. dollar. And his very unpredictability is part of what makes it difficult to make solid projections on our own economy’s performance in the year ahead. Uncertainties on our domestic front add to that difficulty. the midterm elections could provide a boost, as election years have historically been marked by an extra push on economic growth. things could also be better if the agriculture and fisheries sector could finally emerge from the slump it had been on even before the CoVID-19 pandemic struck. much depends on how our local governments could take their “rowing” roles in the sector more effectively, with the Department of Agriculture effectively “steering” them as mandated under the 33-year-old Local Government

Code.

But the first half of the year will be dominated by the election campaign, and it will be difficult to expect much from our local officials by way of meaningful actions to strengthen that sector that is the very backbone of our economy. so the outlook could remain rather murky there. While manufacturing could provide another source of hope for a better year, we need to dramatically improve our ability to attract new investments in the sector, and that requires a lot of homework that our politicians and bureaucrats have long neglected. so what’s in store for 2025? sorry, but I’m afraid my crystal ball has gotten cloudy again. Chinese embassy in PH dismisses rumors of new disease outbreak in China

social media posts stating that a new disease outbreak in China is causing “international health concern.” earlier this week, several social media posts claimed a surge in respiratory illnesses in China, including human

metapneumovirus (hmPV), Influenza A, mycoplasma pneumoniae, and CoVID-19. Chinese embassy Director for media section tom Wu, in a Viber message to INQUIrer.net, described the circulating claims as “fake news.”

Wu added that some posts even suggested that China declared a state of emergency as the respiratory illnesses overwhelmed hospitals and crematoriums, which the Chinese

embassy also denied. the Department of health (Doh) also clarified that there has been no confirmation from the World health organization (Who) or Chinese authorities about the alleged outbreak.

It also assured filipinos that it is “actively verifying” information on the matter and urged the public to refrain from sharing unverified reports to avoid spreading misinformation and confusion.

Commendation for The Voice USA winner pushed

seNAte President Pro tem-

pore Jinggoy estrada filed senate resolution 1262 seeking the commendation of sofronio Vasquez III for being the first filipino and first Asian to win the international singing competition, "the Voice UsA."

"Vasquez's inspiring journey represents the aspirations and unwavering spirit of many of our kababayan (compatriot) and promising young artists as his triumph reminds us how dreams can be achieved with persistence, hard work, and continuous learning," estrada said.

"Vasquez embodied the incomparable filipino vocal prowess and showcased the nation's fervent passion for music before the international stage, bringing prestige

and honor to the entire country," he added. Vazquez, who picked michael Bublé to be his mentor, garnered the highest number of votes across America to win the highly coveted trophy, a $100,000 cash prize, and a record deal with the Universal music Group.

A former contestant in various singing competitions including Tawag ng Tanghalan" of local variety television program "It's showtime," Vasquez moved to Utica, New York to work as a dental assistant. he reportedly joined the Philippine edition of "the Voice" but failed to pass the audition round. Vasquez delivered performances of "Unstoppable" and "A mil-

lion Dreams" in the 26th season of the Voice UsA's finale on Dec. 11, 2024, besting rivals shye, sydney sterlace, Danny Joseph and Jeremy Beloate. Dubbed "the filipino phenom," Vasquez made waves early in the competition when he gave a rendition of the r&B song "I'm Going Down" and became a four-chair turner during the "Blind Audition" stage where all four superstar coaches, rapper and record producer snoop Dogg, country singer and actress reba mcentire, rock band vocalist Gwen stefani and jazz crooner Bublé, turned their chairs to beat each other in recruiting him to join their respective teams. EDCA site in Surigao will undermine Philippine sovereignty – Zarate

mANILA — former Bayan muna party-list rep. Carlos Zarate has opposed proposals to establish an enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (eDCA) site in surigao del Norte, saying it will only undermine the country’s sovereignty.

Zarate said this on friday, January 3 in response to surigao del Norte 2nd District rep. robert Ace Barbers’ renewed appeal for an edca site in his hometown, based on the latter’s fears that the country’s eastern seaboard may be vulnerable to smugglers and foreign intruders.

Zarate, however, said there may be “long-term consequences on the country’s sovereignty, peace, and development” if an eDCA site rises in the province.

“the eDCA sites undermine our country’s sovereignty. the presence of foreign troops and facilities could escalate regional tensions and drag the Philippines into conflicts that are not our own,” Zarate said in a statement.

Zarate believes the way forward should be strengthening the Philippine Coast Guard capabilities and improving the military’s surveillance technology.

he also said the discovery of a submarine drone suspected to belong to China and the sailing of the United states’ Carrier strike Group one led by Uss Carl Vinson between Leyte and mindanao should only propel the government to have an independent defense strategy. the illegal December 26 sailing of the U.s. Carrier strike Group one, led by Uss Carl Vinson, between Leyte and mindanao, and the recent recovery of a submarine drone allegedly from China in masbate, underscores the need for a robust and independent defense strategy, not one relying on foreign powers,” he said. strengthening our coast guard capabilities, improving surveillance technology, and fostering diplomatic solutions

with neighboring countries should be prioritized over foreign military basing,” he added.

Barbers reiterated his appeal for an eDCA site on thursday, January 2 after reports of the submarine drone being recovered in waters off masbate province — just nine kilometers off the coast of san Pascual town.

According to the lawmaker, it is not a far-fetched idea that China is doing research and intel gathering about deuterium, a hydrogen isotope commonly used in experimental fusiontype nuclear reactors.

“With the growing global race to find renewal sources of fuel or energy like deuterium, which reportedly is found abundant in the deep seas in the country’s eastern seaboard, it is not farfetched that China also wanted to get a hand on it,” he said.

But Zarate maintained that there has been no proof that eDCA sites have benefitted local communities.

“Instead of bringing genuine development, these bases exacerbate economic inequality, displace communities, and lead to environmental degradation. the eastern seaboard of the Philippines faces vulnerabilities, but further militarization is not the answer,” he said.

mindanao deserves genuine development, not militarization risks. We call on filipinos to remain vigilant and assertive in protecting our sovereignty. Let’s work towards a truly independent foreign policy prioritizing filipino interests over foreign agendas,” he added.

Last march 19, Barbers already raised the need for an eDCA site in surigao del Norte, saying that while building a naval detachment in Aurora province is important to secure Benham rise, the country’s defense establishment should also defend the southeastern seaboard.

As of now, there are five military installations designated as eDCA sites: Basa Air Base in Pampanga, fort magsaysay in Nueva ecija, Antonio Bautista

TVJ kicks off 2025 with another ‘Eat Bulaga’ trademark win, new studio look

TITO Sotto, Vic Sotto and Joey de Leon — also known as the comedy triumvirate TVJ — welcomed 2025 on a high note, as the Court of Appeals (CA) upheld their ownership of the “Eat Bulaga ” trademark. The trio, along with their co-hosts, also rang in the New Year by unveiling the noontime show’s newly renovated studio.

TVJ was declared the rightful owner of the “Eat Bulaga ” trademark by the Marikina City Regional Trial Court in January 2024, winning the case they filed against Television and

Production Exponents Inc. (TAPE) in January 2023. TAPE appealed the regional trial court’s decision before the CA. Despite TAPE’s plea, the ninth division of the Court of Appeals affirmed the comedy trio as the owner of the noontime show’s trademark in a ruling dated Dec. 13, 2024. According to the CA decision obtained by Business Inquirer , the “exclusive rights of scientists, inventors, as well as artists and gifted citizens — like respondents Tito, Vic, Joey and Jeny — over their intellectual property and creations, must be protected and secured.”

TVJ’s legal counsel Atty. Buko Dela Cruz thanked the CA for its decision, saying it’s a “good” way to start the New Year.

“Good news sa pag pasok ng bagong taon! Dinismiss ng Court of Appeals ang apela ng TAPE Inc tungkol sa ‘Eat Bulaga ( Good news in the New Year! The Court of Appeals dismissed the plea of TAPE regarding the trademark of ‘Eat Bulaga,’ ’” he wrote on Facebook on Thursday, Jan. 2.

He was president of Woodbury University in Burbank, California and executive vice president and chief academic officer of Dominican University of California in San Rafael, California.

I was lucky that I was under his direct supervision. Whenever he

told me to report to his office, I was amazed by the brilliance and innovativeness of his mind. He taught me lots of things in life as an educator and leader. He was an internationally tested, visionary leader who was grounded in deep ethical beliefs and drove transformative organizational quality with nearly flawless execution.

Welcome to year 2025! I randomly asked four persons to answer two questions: (1) What are your plans/projects in 2025?; and (2) Any insights/ learnings on the past year?

Here are their replies: Arienne Calingo, a beauty queen, communications strategist, artist and writer: (1) “I’m kicking off 2025 with a work trip to Kenya, followed by a week in Paris, France for self-care and quality time with my mother. I feel incredibly blessed that my work allows me to integrate my passions for writing, design, and education while engaging with communities

abroad. As someone with a genuine interest in traveling and exploring other cultures, I’m also hoping to visit Dublin in Ireland, the Philippines, London in England, and Japan later in the year. Outside of work, I’m excited to continue nurturing my love for art. In 2024, my artwork was exhibited for the first time at the South Bend Museum of Art (Indiana) and in Chicago. I look forward to creating pieces that are inspired by social justice and human rights issues and submitting my pieces to more exhibits across the United States. I am also writing a personal article about my faith journey, which I plan to submit for publication this year. Lastly, I’d like to focus on reaching my fitness goals and further exploring my musical abilities. This year, I hope to produce music or collaborate with musicians to expand my creative endeavors.” (2) “I’ve come to understand the profound power of letting go. It takes courage and strength to let go of people, imagined

potentials, and opportunities that were never truly meant for us. If someone chooses to walk out of your life, hold the door open with grace and let them go. If an opportunity you poured your heart into ends in rejection or failure, embrace the lesson it offers and trust that something better lies ahead. Have faith in what’s meant to be. You will be redirected to what is truly right for you.”

Milaflor Mahinan, a retired teacher in science at Dr. Alejandro Albert Elementary School in Manila: (1) “I intend to travel throughout the Philippines to discover its abundant beauty and rich resources and to visit my relatives in the U.S.” (2) “Despite an injury, I was able to join the convention for retired teachers, the Philippines Alliance of Retired Educators, which is organized nationwide for GSIS teacher-retirees. One of the objectives of PARE is to increase the pension of all retired educators and additional benefits similar to those in the active services.”

Bam Aquino, a Maurice R. Greenberg world fellow at Yale University’s Jackson School

of Global Affairs and former Philippine senator: (1) “Godwilling, I hope to see a return to public service this 2025!” (2)

“Last year taught me: to have no fear and only faith! To make that leap with a full heart and hope. To always fight the good fight, even if against the odds, as long as it’s for the right reasons.” Frederick Francisco, a sportscaster, basketball coach and founder of Nxt Level Basketball Academy: (1) “Being a dad for over a year, my main goal is to be able to provide better for my family and to spend more time with my kid. I also plan on focusing more on my basketball academy and my sportswear business.” (2)

“Last year, I took a huge step in my sportscasting career. This year, I hope I can maintain this momentum into bigger things.” Watch for the second batch next week.

Miguel Tanfelix takes on his most challenging role in ‘Mga Batang Riles’

MIGUEL Tanfelix is set to showcase his most intense and dynamic performance yet in GMA Prime’s newest dramaaction series, “ Mga Batang Riles .” Premiering on Jan. 6, the series explores the themes of survival, injustice, and resilience, told through the eyes of underprivileged boys wrongfully detained for a crime they didn’t commit.

It stars Miguel Tanfelix as Kidlat Asuncion, a principled young man living in poverty in Sitio Liwanag. He leads a group composed of Kokoy de Santos as Kulot Canlas, Raheel Bhyria as Sig Borja, Bruce Roeland as Matos Victor, Antonio Vinzon as Dagul Moreno. These underprivileged boys must fight and defy the odds, clear their names, and save their town from corruption and abuse.

During the show’s media conference, Tanfelix expressed his excitement for the role, calling it the most actionpacked project of his career.

“This is really hardcore action. Before, for example, in ‘Voltes V,’ there was more action with the robot than with us. But this is hardcore action where every taping day, there has to be stunts,” Tanfelix mentioned.

“So it was really challenging, physically exhausting every single day. That’s what excites us about ‘ Mga Batang Riles ’ — the entire cast — because you always have something to look forward to every taping day, like, ‘What stunts are we going to do today?’” he continued. Filming stunts like jumping from moving trains and intense fight choreography, Tanfelix also admitted that the series tested his physical limits. “A lot can happen on set, so we still have to be careful. Aside from being heavy on

action, this also has heavy drama. It becomes actionpacked because, you know, men often resort to physicality when emotions become overwhelming, right? This is the most hardcore among all the shows I’ve done so far,” Tanfelix said. The series draws heavily

Vice Ganda on MMFF 2024 Special Jury Citation win: ‘I am finally seen’

A VISIBLY shocked Vice

Ganda dedicated the Special Jury Citation plum he received from the 2024 Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) to his loved ones including the “And the Breadwinner Is…” team and the LGBTQIA+ community, saying the film entry made him feel “seen.”

Vice Ganda bagged the Special Jury Citation award at the MMFF 2024 Gabi ng Parangal on Friday, Dec. 27, for his performance in the Jun Robles Lana-helmed film.

According to the MMFF, the award was given to an actor who “broke ground and went out of his comfort zone to prove his growth as an artist and tackle issues relevant to contemporary society.”

The actor-comedian, however, was initially confused as he went up the stage to receive the award. “Pagtayo ko, tinatanong ko si Direk Jun at Uge, ano ba ‘tong award na ‘to? Special jury citation for what? Best dressed of the night? Special jury citation for best performance?”

“Ganun ba ‘yon? So salamat po,” he continued, which led the audience to burst into laughter. “Seriously, hindi ko alam. Nagtatangatangahan ako. Ayoko naman magpasalamat nang hindi ko naman naintindihan ‘yung award… Baka sa best hairstyle, best outfit.”

(When I stood up, I asked Direk Jun and Uge, what award is this? Special jury citation for what? Best dressed of the night? Special jury citation for best performance? Is that it? So thank you. Seriously, I don’t know. I feel dumb. I don’t want to say thank you without understanding what the award is for. Maybe it’s for the best hairstyle or best outfit.)

Vice Ganda’s opening remark led Dennis Trillo (one of the presenters with Lorna Tolentino) to describe the purpose of the Special Jury Citation award.

‘First’ MMFF award

After composing himself, Vice Ganda said in his speech that “And the Breadwinner Is…” was a project that finally made him seen as an actor.

“I am finally seen. I have been participating in the Metro Manila Film Festival for years. This is the first time na meron akong award ( this is the first time I won an award ),” he said while expressing his gratitude to ABS-CBN and Lana.

“Maraming, maraming, maraming, salamat sa pagkakataon na binigay sa’kin ng ABS-CBN. Sa mga

panahon na hirap na hirap ang

kompanya na kinabibilangan ko ay pinipilit pa rin nilang gumawa ng magandang proyekto at magandang contents… at nagpapasalamat ako kay Jun Lana, binigyan mo ko ng magandang storya. Binigyan mo ako ng ganitong storya na inaantay na rin ng marami,” he said. (Thank you very much to ABS-CBN for the opportunity. In a time when the company was struggling, I was still considered to be given good projects and content. And I want to thank Jun Lana. You gave me a good story. You gave me a good story that the public has been waiting for.) The “It’s Showtime” host nonetheless didn’t waste an opportunity to make the audience laugh, as he joked that the award might be a way for him to not be named Best Actor.

“My God, hahabaan ko na. Kasi ibig sabihin, hindi ko makukuha ang Best Actor. Baka ito ‘yung award sa first runner-up, ‘yung mga sayang naman ang outfit, sikat naman siya, panalunin na natin siya for star value of the moment. Pero Special Jury Citation, maraming salamat sa pagkilala. Shineshare ko ‘to sa kapwa kong artista,” he said.

(My God, I’ll make this speech long because this [award] means I won’t be named Best Actor. This might be for the first runner-up winner. This might be for those

who might’ve wasted their outfits or are popular, let’s let them win for star value of the moment. But for this Special Jury Citation, thank you very much to those who recognized me. I’m sharing this with my fellow actors.)

In his speech, Vice Ganda addressed his co-stars Eugene Domingo, Gladys Reyes, Maris Racal and Malou de Guzman, saying they deserved to get a Best Supporting Actress nod. Notably, none of them were nominated for the award.

He also mentioned his costar Dennis Trillo, whom he said he was privileged to work with. “Green Bones” is GMA Picture’s entry to the 50th MMFF.

(I want to share this with my mother. We have a heavy award. I also share this with my husband, Ion Perez, who’s the happiest for me. I also dedicate this to the LGBTQIA+ community. This is for us. Thank you very much to the Metro Manila Film Festival and you recognize me and my abilities as a gay performer.)

Vice Ganda also bagged the nomination for Best Actor alongside Seth Fedelin, Vic Sotto, Piolo Pascual, Arjo Atayde, and eventual winner Dennis Trillo.

Ruru was pitted against Jhong Hilario, Kokoy de Santos, David Ezra and Sid Lucero, the latter nominated twice for “The Kingdom” and “Topakk.”

It took a few minutes for the actor to compose himself as he prepared to give his acceptance speech.

Buong buhay ko, lagi po akong underdog, lagi akong talo, naa -underestimate, lagi akong binababa ,” Ruru said. He proceeded to share how he initially felt when he was panned for his acting in the past, but he was made to realize about those criticisms when he achieved his major acting win at the MMFF.

Celebrating the Feast of Epiphany

Pastor’s Notes

AS we come together to celebrate the Feast of Epiphany, we reflect on the profound meaning and significance of this special day in our Christian journey. Epiphany, which means “manifestation,” marks the revelation of Christ to the Gentiles, embodied by the visit of the Magi—wise men who traveled great distances to pay homage to the newborn King. Their journey exemplifies the universal call of Christ, inviting all of us to encounter God’s presence in our lives.

In our parish, we have recently experienced our own epiphanies. The warmth and joy evident during our Christmas Masses, with a remarkable

number of attendees, remind us of the longing for God and community that resides within each heart. In a world that often feels secular and distant from the sacred, this outpouring of faith is a powerful message: God is inviting us to continue breathing life into the church. People are searching for belonging, meaning, and connection with the divine. Let us not underestimate the importance of our role in fostering this loving community.

As we celebrate the gifts presented by the wise men— gold, frankincense, and myrrh—we are reminded of their profound symbolism. Gold represents Christ’s kingship, acknowledging Him as the sovereign ruler of our lives. Frankincense signifies His divinity, a fragrance offered to God in worship, recognizing Jesus as the Son of God. Myrrh, traditionally associated with burial and mourning, foreshadows the suffering and sacrifice that would ultimately fulfill God’s

plan for salvation. This Epiphany, I invite each of you to reflect on your own moments of revelation— those times when you have felt God’s presence most strongly in your life. How can these experiences inspire us to deepen our faith and strengthen our commitment to our parish community?

Together, let us embrace the calling to be bearers of light amid the challenges of our world. May we continue to seek God and share His love with all, creating a vibrant and welcoming parish for generations to come.

Wishing you a blessed Epiphany, Fr. Rodel “Odey” Balagtas

over their absence from the nominees, with some reiterating how their films were a “breakthrough” in this year’s edition of the film festival.

On the other hand, netizens called out the Gabi ng Parangal jury for not including “Uninvited” as one of the potential winners in notable categories such as Best Picture. The crime thriller tied with “Topakk” to bring home the Best Float award. Despite the backlash, MMFF spokesperson Noel Ferrer reiterated in a statement that the results of the Gabi ng Parangal were from a “no cooking show,” saying the

winners were chosen in an hours-long deliberation.

“No leaks, definitely no cooking show … only the Jury Chair and the MMFF Executive Director knew the results, not even I or any member of the Execom. Rest assured, there was due process and the judgment was fair and sound and final,” he said.

Miguel Tanfelix takes on his most challenging role...

from real-life struggles faced by impoverished communities, reason why the show also made Tondo their backdrop.

“The characters we portray have experiences that real people go through in real life. So every time there’s a break on set, we have some chitchat with the people there, and you can feel the struggles they’re facing, which are not far from what our characters are going through,” Tanfelix recalled.

“I had a conversation with [co-star] sir Jay Manalo because he told us that he

is a true ‘batang riles.’ He said they always used to play in the trains, so it’s really like watching real life, the struggles of people who are deprived of their rights and opportunities,” he added. Finally asked if there is a pressure to lead another primetime show, Tanfelix shared, “I think they see my drive and passion in everything I do. I don’t mind where they place me in the timeslot because I’m always committed to giving 101 percent. I feel like they recognize how determined I am with every

character and show they entrust to me. I won’t let them down. When they give me this kind of responsibility, I make sure I deliver.”

Mga Batang Riles ” also stars Zephanie, Diana Zubiri, Jay Manalo, Desiree del Valle, Eva Darren, Ronnie Ricketts, Roderick Paulate, Jeric Raval, Faye Lorenzo, Krissha Viaje, Jomar Yee and Spencer Serafica. Directed by Richard Arellano and associate director Ralfh Manuel Malabunga, the show premieres on Jan. 6, 8 p.m., on GMA Prime.

Dealing with assets omitted in a divorce case

Barrister’s Corner

YOU and your spouse may have gone through a lengthy and contentious divorce proceeding. This is usually the most difficult period of a person’s life. Finally, time heals all pain. You and your spouse get tired of bickering and being mean to one another that you both decide to compromise each other positions and resolve all issues in your divorce case through settlement. Shortly thereafter, the divorce judgment is finally entered by the Court and you get a sigh of relief. Later you discovery that “Oops!,” your ex-spouse had community asset and/or debt that was left out of the divorce judgment. This may be a pension, retirement account, a hidden bank account, or a piece of real estate property which was not divided in the judgment. What is one to do in this situation?

The answer can be found in California Family Code §2556. California Family Code §2556 provides “In a proceeding for dissolution of marriage, for nullity of marriage, or for legal separation of the parties, the court has continuing jurisdiction to award community estate assets or community estate liabilities to the parties that have not been previously adjudicated by a judgment in the proceeding.” California Family Code §2556. Even if the parties did not expressly reserve jurisdiction on that piece of asset, the Court retains the power to divide a specific property if there is a community interest in it. The Court’s “continuing jurisdiction” over omitted community estate assets or debts is invoked by filing a post judgment Motion, or Request for Order in the divorce case. Family Code §2556 provides “A party may file a postjudgment motion or request for order in the proceeding in order

to obtain adjudication of any community estate asset or liability omitted or not adjudicated by the judgment.”

The postjudgment partition of the unadjudicated community estate claims is properly entertained by the court even absent an express reservation of jurisdiction in its prior judgment. Marriage of Moore & Ferrie (1993) 14 CA4th 1472, 1483, 18 CR2d 543, 549, fn. 9

The postjudgment motion is available to any omitted asset or debt not adjudicated by the divorce judgment. However, Family Code §2556 does not extend to division and adjudication of any separate property. Marriage of Klug (2005) 130 CA4th 1389, 1396, 31 CR3d 327, 331–332. If an asset was partially omitted, the Court can still divide and adjudicate the portion that has been omitted postjudgment under Family Code §2566. Community Property adjudicated under § 2556 shall be divided equally “unless the court finds upon good cause shown that the interests of justice require an unequal division of the asset or liability.” Family Code §2556

PH returns to the world’s most powerful tech show

THE Philippines will power up the trade show floor as it makes a comeback in Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2025, the most powerful tech event in the world. Under PARTNERPhilippines, a flagship program that positions the Philippines as a global business hub, an exhibit of eight tech companies will take center stage in the U.S.-based trade show that showcases the entire tech landscape in a single event on January 7 to 10 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

CES 2025 is a dynamic platform where the brightest luminaries, brands, and innovators across the entire tech ecosystem meet. It is seen as a perfect avenue for tech companies to showcase their products, while catching firsthand the boldest breakthroughs in electronics.

Center for International Trade Expositions and Mission (CITEM) Executive Director

Leah Pulido Ocampo touted the Philippines’ second participation in CES as “a significant step to increase the Philippines’ share in the global consumer electronics market.”

“We have a strong electronics sector. For decades, the industry’s export activities have been a major economic driver of the country. So, it is only quite fitting that we put the electronics industry on top of our priority,” the export promotion head added.

The Philippine Export Development Plan 2023-2028 puts a prominent focus on targeted interventions within key Global Value Chain (GVC) clusters, building on the country’s existing capabilities to seize emerging opportunities in global markets. The plan promotes industries that cater to the country’s fundamental needs. Among the four key clusters identified is Industrial Machinery and Transport, which aims to improve opportunities in semiconductors while advancing the aerospace, automotive, and maritime sectors. This cluster supports businesses engaged in outsourced semiconductor assembly and testing, alongside promoting research and development in electronics.

In 2023, the Philippine electronics sectors saw a gradual recovery with export sales reaching $41.91 billion. Dwindling figures were

posted during the pandemic, yet electronics remained the Philippines’ top export, accounting for 57 percent of the country’s total exports. Similarly, electronic products continue to be the Philippines’ top export in key regions including Southeast Asia, the European Union, and the Asia-Pacific. In a preliminary data released by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), the Philippines exported $27.4 billion worth of electronic products from January to August in 2024. Capitalizing on booming export activities, the Philippines’

top-tier electronics companies will showcase a spectrum of products, solutions, and technologies that cut across all categories. The Philippine delegation will likewise advocate for green revolution, espousing a culture of sustainable business and lifestyle. For his part, Dr. Danilo Lachica, president of the Semiconductor and Electronics Industries in the Philippines Foundation, Inc. (SEIPI), is expecting a rebound for the electronics industry in 2025.

“We’re projecting a five percent growth from this

year. And it’s just going to be stronger. The government has done an excellent job promoting the country, and actually taking action to resolve lingering issues that are dissuading investors to come in,” Lachica said.

Joining the country’s line up for CES this year are Airspeed; Automated Technology Philippines, Inc.; Integrated Micro-Electronics, Inc.; Ionics EMS, Inc.; Leader Electronics Philippines, Inc.; Team Pacific Corporation; Tsukiden Electronics Philippines, Inc.; and Xinyx Design.

Christine Gojar, corporate communications officer of Xinyx Design, underscores CES as a perfect platform to demonstrate how a Philippine-based fabless IC design solutions provider is shaping the future of technology.

“We’re excited to share with you the scope of our innovative IC design services and showcase what semiconductor design ecosystem is available in the Philippines,” Gojar added.

Urging businesses to venture with his company, Earl Lawrence Cua, vice president for business development of Ionics EMS, Inc., claims that they have “extensive experience in producing technology for the largest and most innovative companies.”

“We have the latest and greatest equipment. We have incorporated and developed the smart factory into our operations and that guarantees transparency with our customers, the quality of our product, as well as the best cost,” Cua said.

The Philippine participation in CES 2025 is organized by CITEM along with the Department of Trade and Industry - Competitiveness and Innovation Group (DTICIG), the Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA), and Semiconductor and Electronics Industries in the Philippines Foundation Inc. (SEIPI).

Catch PARTNERPhilippines as it merges innovation and sustainability to solidify the country’s position as a holistic and viable trade destination in CES 2025 at booth no. 50128, from January 7 to 10 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
