Marcos extends sympathy to LA wildfire victims: Stay safe, vigilant

mANiLA — President ferdinand marcos Jr. expressed sympathy for those affected by the wildfires sweeping through southern California, including many filipinos living in the area.

in a statement on sunday, January 12, marcos acknowledged the challenges faced by communities affected by the disaster. on behalf of the filipino people, i extend my deepest sympathies to all who have been affected by the devastating wildfires in southern California, UsA — a place that many of our kababayans call home,” he

said. marcos also urged everyone to stay strong and united during this challenging time.

“may the community’s road to recovery begin with strength, compassion, and solidarity. Please stay safe and vigilant,” the president added.

According to a report by Agence francePresse (AfP), the largest of the wildfires in Los Angeles spread into previously unaffected neighborhoods on saturday, January 11, prompting new evacuations and dimming hopes for containment. the fire in the 22,660-acre Palisades

mANiLA — malacañang on tuesday, January 14 reiterated President ferdinand marcos Jr.’s opposition to moves to impeach Vice President sara Duterte. executive secretary Lucas Bersamin made the statement when asked by journalists whether the peace rally of the iglesia Ni Cristo (iNC) last monday, January 13 “had any effect” on the president’s stance. the president’s position on the impeachment move in the (house of representatives) has not changed,” Bersamin said in a statement sent to Palace

said he does not support the impeachment of his former ally as it would not benefit the filipino people.

“What will happen if somebody files an impeachment? it will tie down the house, it will tie down the senate. it will just take up all our time and for what? for nothing, for nothing. None of this will help improve a single filipino life,” the president said.

iNC, estimated to have more than two million members, is known for its bloc voting and is often courted by politicians, especially during election season.

the religious group backed the marcos-Duterte tandem in the 2022 general elections.

“i don’t think so. We just have to look at the law as something that equalizes everything between all of us. that’s why we cannot give special favors to people because of standing,” he told reporters when asked if the iNC rally would affect the probe against Duterte.

Duterte’s announcement that she is “seriously considering” running for president in the 2028 elections is also a different matter, according to remulla. it’s not an issue. the issue is whether or not a criminal act was committed. We have to look at it from the merits of the case or cases,” the justice secretary explained.

former President rodrigo

Duterte on monday called on every filipino to unite under one flag in the face of crisis that the country is now facing.

Duterte made the call for unity amid iNC’s massive peace rally held in various key parts in the country.

"And i echo the president's conversation with you about the work that you will do with the next administration in terms of reinforcing the importance of that trilateral cooperation and the critical nature of it to maintain security in the south China sea," she added.

During harris' Philippine visit in Nov. 2022, she discussed with marcos cooperation on climate and clean energy, technology, critical minerals and semiconductor supply chains, maritime security, and inclusive

economic growth. the conversation with harris came following marcos' virtual meeting with U.s. President Joe Biden and Japan Prime minister ishiba shigeru on monday, January 13. Biden and harris have been engaging in calls with allies and partners ahead of the end of their terms on January 20. n

No comment malacañang on tuesday also declined to comment on the vice president’s remarks that she is “seriously considering” running for president in 2028.

“No statement here,” Presidential Communications office secretary Cesar Chavez said. Duterte made the remarks during a meet-and-greet with overseas filipino workers in tokyo, Japan as part of her “private” trip to Japan over the weekend.

“What’s happening to the country now can no longer continue. We see the country continuously backsliding. i really believe our country can be great,” Duterte said when asked about her plans for 2028.

‘Rally won’t affect probe’ the massive iNC rally last monday will not affect the government’s investigation into Duterte’s supposed threat against marcos’ life, Justice secretary Jesus Crispin remulla assured the public on tuesday.

remulla said that while iNC members are free to express themselves and the government respects such freedom, he is “not concerned” about the religious sect’s supposed political influence, and the investigation will be immune from political pressure.

the filipino American attorney general also announced the creation of the Disaster relief task force and the launch of a website dedicated to its response.

“Preying on people during such a vulnerable time is not just fundamentally wrong, it is illegal,” Bonta said in a statement.

“over the past week, i have encouraged the public to submit complaints to local law enforcement or my office. the response has been overwhelming. today, i can confirm that we are actively investigating multiple cases. Let there be no doubt that we will hold those accountable who are attempting to exploit Californians and profit from their pain.”

the Disaster relief task force is made up of a team of professionals from state law enforcement and legal divisions including the Division of Law enforcement, special Prosecutions section, Cybercrime section and the Consumer Protection section, as well as local law enforcement, Bonta said.

the California Department of Justice (DoJ) also has special agents actively in the field investigating leads that came directly from complaints from victims and witnesses in the impacted areas.

DoJ has sent letters to trade associations and platforms for both short- and long-term rentals regarding price-gouging regulations. the letters emphasized that these companies are expected

Nearly 1.8 million iNC members flocked to the Quirino Grandstand last monday to protest against the impeachment cases filed against Duterte.

While she did not attend the rally herself, the vice president released a video statement saying that the protest was a “powerful way to show unity and cooperation by those seeking peace for the welfare of our nation.”

the religious sect said its gathering was not a political power play, but a call for unity, as they urged the two most powerful filipino politicians to drop their fight and focus on important issues of the day.

the event was organized by iNC supposedly to express their support for marcos’ position opposing the Duterte’s impeachment.

remulla said the NBi would submit to the Department of Justice its report on its investigation on Duterte’s threat “very soon.”

Prosecutor General richard fadullon earlier said the National Bureau of investigation (NBi) has already concluded its probe, but further evaluation on whether the case warrants a preliminary investigation is needed.

fadullon added that they are sending prosecutors to evaluate the evidence filed with the NBi Duterte: Let’s unite under one

i would like to thank Ka eduardo manalo and iNC for organizing and mobilizing its members in today’s Prayer rally for Peace. Let’s unite under our flag,” he said in a video posted on the fPrrD (former President rodrigo roa Duterte) supporters facebook page. this is what our country needs in these critical times. Not impeachment. Not waste of government resources. Not selfserving schemes. Not divisive action. We must unite. We must move forward as one. We must serve our people,” Duterte said.

‘Rally shouldn’t cloud impeachment’ the size of iNC’s recent peace rally, whether it was pro or against Duterte, should not cloud the house’s judgment on the impeachment complaint filed against the vice president, former Bayan muna representative teddy Casiño said.

“the iglesia ni Cristo rally notwithstanding, the house of representatives is duty-bound to deliberate on the three impeachment complaints against VP sara Duterte filed last month,” Casiño added. the former legislator explained that members of the house will have to decide if Duterte betrayed public trust, committed culpable violation of the Constitution or engaged in bribery, graft and corruption or any other grounds for her impeachment, .

“the evidence that she did are all in the complaints. they know it. We know it. even members of the iNC know it,” Casiño said. (With reports from Daphne Galvez, Edith regalado, Jose rodel clapano)

sACrAmeNto — As the nation braces for potential policy shifts under Presidentelect Donald trump’s “make America healthy Again” mantra, the nation’s most populous state and largest health care market is preparing for a few changes of its own.

With supermajorities in both houses, Democrats in the California Legislature passed — and Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom signed — laws taking effect this year that will erase medical debt from credit reports, allow public health officials to inspect immigrant detention centers, and require health insurance companies to cover fertility services such as in vitro fertilization.

still, industry experts say it was a relatively quiet year for health policy in the Golden state, with more attention on a divisive presidential election and with several state legislators seeking to avoid controversial issues as they ran for Congress in competitive swing districts. Newsom shot down some of legislators’ most ambitious health care policies, including

proposals that would have regulated pharmaceutical industry middlemen and given the state more power to stop private equity deals in health care.

health policy experts say advocates and legislators are now focused on how to defend progressive California policies such as sweeping abortion access in the state and health coverage for immigrants living in the U.s. without authorization.

i think everyone’s just thinking about how we’re going to enter 2025,” said rachel Linn Gish, a spokesperson with the consumer health advocacy group health Access California. “We’re figuring out what is vulnerable, what we are exposed to on the federal side, and what do budget changes mean for our work. that’s kind of putting a cloud over everything.” here are some of the biggest new health care laws Californians should know about:

Medical debt

California becomes the eighth state in which medical debt will no longer affect patients’ credit reports or credit scores. sB 1061 bars health care providers and debt collectors from reporting unpaid medical

bills to credit bureaus, a practice that supporters of the law say penalizes people for seeking critical care and can make it harder for patients to get a job, buy a car, or secure a mortgage.

Critics including the California Association of Collectors called the measure from sen. monique Limón (D-santa Barbara) a “tremendous overreach” and successfully lobbied for amendments that limited the scope of the bill, including an exemption for any medical debt incurred on credit cards. the Biden administration has finalized federal rules that would stop unpaid medical bills from affecting patients’ credit scores, but the fate of those changes remains unclear as trump takes office.

Psychiatric hospital stays for violent offenders Violent offenders with severe mental illness can now be held longer after a judge orders them released from a state mental hospital.

state officials and local law enforcement will now have 30 days to coordinate housing, medication, and behavioral health treatment for those parolees, giving them far more u PAGE A4

New California laws target medical debt...

time than the five-day deadline previously in effect.

the bill drew overwhelming bipartisan support after a highprofile case in san francisco in which a 61-year-old man was charged in the repeated stabbing of a bakery employee just days after his release from a state mental hospital. the bill’s author, Assembly member matt haney (D-san francisco), called the previous five-day timeline “dangerously short.” Cosmetics and ‘forever chemicals’

California was the first state to ban PfAs chemicals, also known as “forever chemicals,” in all cosmetics sold and manufactured within its borders. the synthetic compounds, found in everyday products including rain jackets, food packaging, lipstick, and shaving cream, have been linked to cancer, birth defects, and diminished immune function and have been increasingly detected in drinking water.

industry representatives have argued that use of PfAs — perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances — is critical in some products and that some can be safely used at certain levels.

Immigration detention facilities

After CoViD-19 outbreaks, contaminated water, and moldy food became the subjects of detainee complaints and lawsuits, state legislators gave local county health officials the authority to enter and inspect privately run immigrant detention centers. sB 1132, from sen. maría elena Durazo (D-Los Angeles), gives public health officials the ability to evaluate whether privately run facilities are complying with state and local public health regulations regarding proper ventilation, basic mental and physical health care, and food safety.

Although the federal government regulates immigration, six federal detention centers in California are operated by the Geo Group. one of the country’s largest private prison contractors, Geo has faced a litany of complaints related to health and safety. Unlike public prisons and jails, which are inspected annually, these facilities would be inspected only as deemed necessary. the contractor filed suit in october to stop implementation

of the law, saying it unconstitutionally oversteps the federal government’s authority to regulate immigration detention centers. A hearing in the case is set for march 3, said Bethany Lesser, a spokesperson for California Attorney General rob Bonta. the law took effect Jan. 1.

Doctors vs. insurance companies using AI

As major insurance companies increasingly use artificial intelligence as a tool to analyze patient claims and authorize some treatment, trade groups representing doctors are concerned that Ai algorithms are driving an increase in denials for necessary care. Legislators unanimously agreed.

sB 1120 states that decisions about whether a treatment is medically necessary can be made only by licensed, qualified physicians or other health care providers who review a patient’s medical history and other records.

Sick leave and protected time off two new laws expand the circumstances under which California workers may use sick days and other leave. sB 1105 entitles farmworkers who work outdoors to take paid sick leave to avoid heat, smoke, or flooding when local or state officials declare an emergency.

AB 2499 expands the list of reasons employees may take paid sick days or use protected unpaid leave to include assisting a family member who is experiencing domestic violence or other violent crimes.

Prescription labels for the visually impaired starting this year, pharmacies will be required to provide drug labels and use instructions in Braille, large print, or audio for blind patients.

Advocates of the move said state law, which already required translated instructions in five languages for non-english speakers, has overlooked blind patients, making it difficult for them to monitor prescriptions and take the correct dosage.

Maternal mental health screenings health insurers will be required to bolster maternal mental health programs by mandating additional screenings to better detect perinatal depression, which affects 1 in 5 people who give birth in California, according to state data. Pregnant people

will now undergo screenings at least once during pregnancy and then six weeks postpartum, with further screenings as providers deem necessary.

Penalties for threatening health care workers (abortion clinics)

With abortion care at the center of national policy fights, California is cracking down on those who threaten, post personal information about, or otherwise target providers or patients at clinics that perform abortions. Penalties for such behavior will increase under AB 2099, and offenders can face felony charges, up to three years in jail, and $50,000 in fines for repeat or violent offenses. Previously, state law classified many of those offenses as misdemeanors.

Insurance coverage for IVF starting in July, stateregulated health plans covering 50 employees or more would be required to cover fertility services under sB 729, passed and signed last year. Advocates have long fought for this benefit, which they say is essential care for many families who have trouble getting pregnant and would ensure LGBtQ+ couples aren’t required to pay more outof-pocket costs than straight couples when starting a family. in a signing statement, Newsom asked legislators to delay implementation of the law until 2026 as state officials consider whether to add infertility treatments to the list of benefits that insurance plans are required to cover. it’s unclear whether legislators intend to address that this session, but a spokesperson for the governor said that Newsom “clearly stated his position on the need for an extension” and that he “will continue to work with the legislature” on the matter. Plans under CalPers, the California Public employees’ retirement system, would have to comply by July 2027. ‘Second responders’– concerns mount over abuse of immigrant workers in LA fire recovery

eVeN as the devastating fires in Los Angeles continue to burn, leaving a trail of destruction, stories are emerging about the role immigrants are playing in recovery efforts from what is likely the worst disaster in California history.

some are calling them, “second responders.” the guys (day laborers) are already out helping because there aren’t enough city personnel,” says Angelica salas, executive director of the Coalition for humane immigrant rights of LA (ChirLA). “they are going through the streets, helping people cut down their trees and get them off the roads.”

But salas and others worry about the exploitation many of these workers face. it’s something they always go through,” she notes. “they go, clean up, and rebuild, and all of a sudden, it’s no pay, entry into toxic zones with no protection, and contractors hiring subcontractors and day laborers with no guarantees.”

Donald trump’s return to the White house on January 20 heightens such fears, with his promise of mass deportations

targeting unauthorized migrants increasing their sense of vulnerability.

“i think people might not show up for jobs in Los Angeles for fear of being raided,” said Jennie murray of the National immigration forum, which brings together business owners and law enforcement leaders sympathetic to the need for comprehensive immigration reform.

A majority of essential workers in construction and disaster cleanup, critical to recovery in communities like Pacific Palisades, Altadena, and elsewhere affected by the fires, are immigrants. many are undocumented or have temporary permission under programs like tPs and DACA, programs the new administration is threatening to eliminate. these are the people who are rebuilding the United states after hurricanes, floods, and fires; the vast majority are immigrants, and they are highly vulnerable, and they are highly exploited while doing that work,” explained activist saket soni of resilient Workforce in an 2023 interview with NPr Post-disaster recovery industry in the aftermath of hurricane Katrina in 2025, the George

W. Bush administration temporarily suspended sanctions on employers who hired undocumented immigrants in order to facilitate rebuilding efforts in affected areas. since then, natural disasters linked to climate change have multiplied, with immigrant workers the backbone of what has become a multi-billion-dollar, post-disaster recovery industry financed by both the government and insurance companies. experts say fear of detention and deportation contributes to labor abuses, and the overall health and safety of these workers. Nick theodore with the Department of Urban Planning and Policy at the University of illinois Chicago surveyed workers during rebuilding in New orleans after hurricane iDA in 2021. he found that 40% of workers came to NoLA after the hurricane from other areas of the U.s., so-called “storm chasers,” a workforce flexibility unique to migrant laborers and vital to recovery efforts.

Yet theodore’s survey also found numerous instances of labor violations and wage theft. many workers reported various physical effects following cleanup operations after the disaster, u PAGE A7

Disbarment case filed vs former President Duterte

mANiLA — human rights

group Karapatan, several human rights advocates and religious leaders, together with relatives of victims of extrajudicial killings on friday, January 17 filed a disbarment case against former President rodrigo Duterte. in their complaint, they said Duterte violated the Code of Professional responsibility and Accountability (CPrA) and for conduct unbecoming a lawyer.

Duterte obtained his law degree from san Beda, and was admitted to the Bar in 1973. he was a former prosecutor. he was also the eighth lawyer to become president; the last was ferdinand marcos sr. in December, Duterte appeared before the senate and admitted giving kill orders to the death squad in connection with his anti-illegal drugs campaign.

“With Duterte’s invocation of his role as lawyer and prosecutor as some kind of authority in his recent testimony at the hearings at the house of representatives and the senate, we believe it is time for victims of human rights violations to speak up. it is time for us to appeal to the supreme Court to reinforce how the law should work in the Philippines, how the law should shield victims of human rights violations as they seek justice and should ensure dignified and proper conduct in the practice of law,” Atty. Vicente Jaime “VJ” topacio said. topacio is the son of NDfP consultants Agaton topacio and eugenia magpantay who were victims of extrajudicial killings in their home in November, 2020. Aside from topacio, other

complainants are Llore Pasco, whose sons Crisanto and Juan Carlos were found dead on october 12, 2017, killed in an alleged police drug war operation; and Liezel Asuncion, widow of Bayan-Cavite coordinator manny Asuncion, who was among the nine activists killed in the so-called Bloody sunday massacre on march 7, 2021. Also among the complainants are rosenda Lemita, whose daughter Ana mariz and sonin-law Ariel evangelista were killed during the Bloody sunday police raids, and Lean Porquia, son of slain Bayan muna – Panay coordinator Jory Porquia. the other complainants are human rights defenders former Bayan muna rep. satur ocampo, KArAPAtAN secretary general Cristina Palabay, fr. manuel Gatchalian, sVD, sr. eleanor Llanes, iCm hustisya secretary general ofelia Balleta, Norma Dollaga, orly marcellana, Bayan secretary general raymond Palatino, tina-Agel romero and cultural workers Bonifacio ilagan, JL Burgos, Kiri Dalena.

“this petition for disbarment is especially relevant, since rodrigo Duterte has presented

himself as one of the legal counsels of his daughter, Vice President sara Duterte, who is currently facing at least three impeachment complaints,” Karapatan secretary General Cristina Palabay said.

“We fervently hope the disbarment petition will be given due course by the supreme Court,” she added.

Disbarment is the removal of a lawyer’s right to practice law. once disbarred, a lawyer’s name will be stricken out from the roll of Attorneys. only the names included in the roll can practice law.

As a general rule, disbarment proceedings against lawyers are confidential under the rules of Court, but in the case of Palad vs. Lolit solis et al, in the decision written by now-retired Chief Justice Diosdado Peralta, such confidentiality is not a restriction on the freedom of the press.

“As long as there is a legitimate public interest, the media is not prohibited from making a fair true, and accurate news report about a disbarment complaint,” read part of the decision. the former president has yet to issue a statement on the matter. n

Enrile questions INC ‘logic’ vs VP Sara Duterte impeach raps

mANiLA — Chief Presidential Legal Counsel Juan Ponce enrile warned that the country would face a “very detrimental precedent” if filipinos followed the implied reasoning of the recent iglesia ni Cristo (iNC) rally opposing efforts to impeach Vice President sara Duterte. in a facebook post on Wednesday night, January 15, two days after the iNC’s “National rally for Peace,” the 100-year-old former senate President challenged the iNC’s supposed support of President ferdinand marcos Jr.’s call on his congressional allies not to pursue the vice president’s impeachment, which is an exercise of due process to exact accountability. there is a bigger question,” enrile said. “Can the iNC, with all its members, amend the 1987 Constitution or suspend any of its provisions? Are we prepared to discard or sacrifice the value of rULe of LAW for a person or a group of persons?” enrile explained that impeachment is “just a constitutional legal process” to remove an official from office if found culpable based on evidence. it is not meant to send the official to prison. Under the 1987 Constitution, the president, vice president, members of the supreme Court and constitutional commissions, and the ombudsman are impeachable public officers.

As the senate president in 2012, enrile presided over the impeachment trial of thensupreme Court Chief Justice renato Corona for betrayal of public trust and culpable violation of the Constitution for not disclosing all his assets as constitutionally required.

on feb. 28 that year, the iNC also held rallies nationwide, drawing a crowd of more than half a million at Quirino Grandstand. the assembly was billed as a “Grand evangelical mission,” similar to the peace rally last monday, January 13, but was a subtle signal to malacañang not to convict Corona.

on may 29, 2012, enrile and 19 other senators voted to convict Corona, whose lead lawyer was retired supreme Court Associate Justice serafin Cuevas, an iNC member. mr. marcos, then a senator, voted against Corona’s impeachment along with senators Joker Arroyo and miriam Defensor santiago.

‘Long-term consequences’ in his facebook post, enrile warned against following the implied reasoning behind the iNC rally, which is not to let due process take its course in the three impeachment complaints

mANiLA — sexuality education is necessary to address the rising cases of teenage pregnancy in the country, President ferdinand marcos Jr. said on friday, January 17. marcos made the remarks when asked for his views on the controversial Comprehensive sexuality education (Cse) being implemented by schools pursuant to Department of education order 31.

in November last year, the president said that Congress should not pursue the impeachment of Duterte. he pointed out that the vice president was “unimportant” and her impeachment would just be a waste of time that would distract lawmakers from doing their jobs and wouldn’t benefit a single filipino.

executive secretary Lucas Bersamin on thursday, January 16 said the president has “always nurtured a culture of open ventilation of ideas” among members of the Cabinet and that it was this environment that enrile decided to speak on the issue.

“While his thoughts may carry weight and are always valued, his is one of many that the president seriously considers. Nonetheless, the president’s stand on the issue concerned remains unchanged,” Bersamin said.

the executive secretary said mr. marcos’ openness to opposing points of view from Cabinet members had enriched policymaking because of the “diverse views resulting in decisions distilled from a wealth of varied experiences, different disciplines and special expertise of those who contribute.” the iNC, known for bloc voting during elections, said the rally was not meant to be a political gathering. But sect leaders urged lawmakers to address major problems like the high food prices, lack of jobs, and poverty and not to engage in politicking such as moves to impeach the vice president. sagip rep. rodante marcoleta, an iNC member and supporter

of the vice president, said the iNC was not taking sides in the rift between the president and the vice president and that they just wanted the two high-ranking leaders to work together.

Sara breakaway Duterte broke off from the Cabinet last July when she quit as education secretary. months later, she became openly hostile to the president and called him a liar and a thief in a profanitylaced tirade during an online press briefing. she also said that she had arranged for the assassination of the president, first Lady Liza Araneta-marcos, and speaker martin romualdez if she died in an alleged plot to kill her.

Although the influential iNC mustered large crowds across the country to attend the Jan. 13 peace rally, including an estimated 1.8 million at Quirino Grandstand, critics of the vice president were undeterred in pushing for her impeachment.

the impeachment complaints accused her of culpable violation of the Constitution, betrayal of public trust, graft and corruption, bribery, and other high crimes.

All the complaints alleged that Duterte misused hundreds of millions of pesos in confidential funds of the office of the Vice President and the Department of education.

EDSA Shrine Mass members of various people’s organizations, social movements, sectoral groups, and religious leaders gathered for a mass at eDsA shrine in Quezon City that served as a platform for reflection, prayer, and a collective call for holding public officials, particularly the vice president, accountable. they wore white and black shirts with peach-colored ribbons, symbolizing their commitment to impeach Duterte to uphold transparency and justice in governance. they were joined by Akbayan rep. Perci Cendaña, an endorser of the first impeachment complaint against Duterte; former sen. Leila de Lima, spokesperson for the complainants of the first complaint; leaders from the magdalo Party-List group; former presidential adviser on the peace process teresita Deles; and francis “Kiko” Aquino Dee, grandson of the late President Corazon Aquino. the “misa ng sambayanan: may Kapayapaan kung may Pananagutan” (People’s Mass: There is Peace when there is Accountability) was a virtual retort to the iNC’s “National rally for Peace.” there is no peace without justice and no justice without accountability,” said Cendaña, adding that every delay in the impeachment process would

education secretary sonny Angara has assured the public that its approach to sex education in public schools responds to the needs of students in a “culturally sensitive” way.

the Cse is a framework promoted by United Nations agencies like the United Nations educational, scientific and Cultural organization, the United Nations Children’s fund and the United Nations Population fund. it focuses on a sexual rightsbased and inclusive approach to help younger people make safe and responsible choices. however, former education

secretary Leonor Briones has expressed her opposition to the mandatory implementation of Cse in public schools amid pending senate Bill 1979 which aims to adopt the Cse framework of the Department of education (Deped) in order to address teenage pregnancy. speaking to some local reporters in a video posted on X (formerly twitter), Briones said she is “worried” about the mandatory aspect of the bill as it might trample upon one’s culture, faith and customs.

“i’m really worried that they might make it (Cse) mandatory without regard for culture, for faith, for practices. And i can’t accept that we will have international standards on this issue,” Briones said in english and filipino.

“Because not only are there Christians but peoples of other faiths who are not necessarily as enthusiastic about making this law or bill mandatory. i’m worried about the mandatory aspect,” she added. meanwhile, Benjo Basas, u PAGE A7

Still, corruption

The country has several laws against corruption, and two laws to cut red tape and promote ease of doing business. The Philippines is a signatory to the legally binding United Nations Convention Against Corruption, and ratified the international agreement way back in Nov. 6, 2006.

Yet corruption remains the top concern of business executives in the Philippines this year. this is according to the latest survey of the management Association of the Philippines, conducted among the businessmen whose activities generate jobs and livelihood opportunities. the mAP survey, taken in the fourth quarter of 2024, also identified education, dealing with local government units, ease of doing business, the economy, climate change and cybersecurity among the top concerns of businesses.

Concerns over red tape especially at the local government level had prompted the enactment of republic Act 9485, the Anti-red tape Act of 2007. As in most laws, however, there was a yawning gap between the enactment and enforcement of rA 9485. over a decade later, another law had to be passed. rA 11032 or the ease of Doing Business and efficient Government service Delivery Act was enacted in 2018. still, not even the iron-fist approach to governance of rodrigo Duterte, who often stressed in his

speeches the need to cut red tape, could deliver the promised ease of doing business. surveys have shown that the country remains a regional laggard in terms of ease of doing business. this is undoubtedly among the factors that have made the country a laggard as well in terms of attracting foreign investments. foreign firms that are now decamping from China are relocating not to the Philippines but to Vietnam and other destinations in southeast Asia. mAP and other groups in the private sector have been forging partnerships with the government to assist in sectors such as public education, health care and food production to promote the welfare of the country’s most precious resource, its people. But the government, with its resources, cannot depend too much on the private sector for the delivery of basic services. it must implement the necessary reforms and officials must lead by example in addressing the concerns of the business community. oVer the years, i have developed good relations with a wide range of think tanks in Washington, D.C. But one that i particularly look forward to receiving information from is eurasia Group founder and president ian Bremmer, who has become a personal friend.

Although this year is “looking extraordinary” when seen from a “certain perspective,” ian tells us that despite certain encouraging developments – such as the prospect of negotiations and even a possible ceasefire in the war in Ukraine, the diminishing violence in Gaza and beyond, and a hotlycontested presidential election that resulted in an “undisputed winner with a clear mandate” – a closer look shows that the world has “big problems.”

A “community of nations” is “the stuff of fairy tales, with governance that isn’t meeting the needs of citizens. our challenges are global, whether those related to climate, technology, the

Moving Into High Gear

trUmP 2.0 will officially start its era in two days. to say that there’s a lot at stake is an understatement. President-elect Donald trump will take his oath on January 20, with one hand on a Bible, summoning the heavens’ aid by saying, “so help me, God.” trump will bring about a tectonic shift in American domestic policies and international relations, regardless of what everyone else thinks. these expected massive policy shifts have far-reaching implications that can very well upend the international order established since World War ii and reconfigured after 9/11. such is the case as long as the world relies on the United states dollar as the primary global currency for international trade and finance, and the U.s. can maintain its ironclad alliances with old and new friends through the assurance of the protection of its nuclear umbrella. expect a lot of challenges in international relations at the outset, as trump will require a reevaluation of current U.s alliances from day one. this is understandable for an incoming

economy or national security,” the political scientist and New York times bestselling author asserts.

Certainly, it is lamentable that “we are heading back to the law of the jungle,” seeing a world where “the strongest do what they can while the weakest are condemned to suffer what they must. And the former – whether states, companies or individuals – can’t be trusted to act in the interest of those they have power over,” he stresses.

ian puts a spotlight on the U.s. and China, saying these “two most powerful countries in the world” are assertively rejecting responsibility for the rest of the planet as they focus inward on the enemies first and foremost within their own borders, increasingly worrying over threats to their own stability.

Based on ian’s analysis, the biggest global risk for 2025 is the emergence of a “G-Zero World:” an era when “no one power or group of powers is both willing and able to drive a global agenda and maintain international order. that global deficit is growing critically dangerous.”

in Bremmer’s 2012 book

administration which now has the benefit of hindsight, an experienced old hand returning with knowledge from past mistakes and successes, and armed with ideas on how to shake things up. international observers must not forget that due to the war on terror following 9/11, U.s troops were sent to Afghanistan and iraq. since then, there has been a low appetite among Americans for meddling in other countries’ troubles, much less for supporting wars of the past like the iran-Contra affair and the Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba. the U.s.’ overseas adventurism has not only stretched its military thin, but it has also overburdened American taxpayers with military spending just to fulfill its role as global police.

We have seen a preview of how foreign policy will be shaped on Capitol hill henceforth during tuesday’s confirmation hearing of Pete hegseth as defense secretary, in which he vowed to modernize all three legs of the nuclear triad amid China and russia’s accelerated development of their nuclear delivery and weapons systems.

America has a lot on its plate these days, besides its highly polarized electorate. trump will surely prioritize domestic concerns over poking his nose

Top global risks in 2025

titled “every Nation for itself: Winners and Losers in a G-Zero World,” he was already talking about the dangers of a growing power vacuum with no country or alliance of countries willing to take on the responsibility of assuming global leadership. today, this power vacuum poses “a recipe for endemic geopolitical instability that will weaken the world’s security and economic architecture, create new and expanding power vacuums, embolden rogue actors and increase the likelihood of accidents, miscalculation and conflict,” with the risk of economic disruptions and dangerous military clashes that could grow when there is no one able and willing to uphold global peace and prosperity. our top risk this year is not a single event. it’s the cumulative impact of the G-Zero leadership deficit on the breakdown of the global order. We’re entering a uniquely dangerous period of world history on par with the 1930s and the early cold war,” he warns. Despite such a grim picture, some people are hopeful of “far stronger international

cooperation than is thought desirable or would be feasible” in order to solve such challenges – although there is a sense of dismay that “the political actors most essential to strengthening global institutions are moving in the other direction.”

What particularly caught my attention is “risk # 7: Beggar thy World” that discusses the rivalry between the United states and China. “Global markets are riding high on hopes of a strengthening global economic expansion in 2025,” but according to ian, the world’s two giant economies are “set to export disruption to everyone else this year, shortcircuiting the global recovery and accelerating geo-economic fragmentation.”

China’s economy is experiencing its weakest performance in decades with a deepening property crisis, mounting debt and collapsing confidence that have exposed the limits of Beijing’s growth model, while U.s. President-elect Donald trump has announced plans to impose tariffs to correct unfair practices against the U.s. But the timing is particularly poor, given the tepid global growth,

inflation remaining sticky and debt levels at historic highs, with even developed economies like Japan and italy still struggling with debt burdens, ian states.

“Against this backdrop, governments that won recent elections promising better times ahead will face a harsh reality check. their honeymoons will be brief as global economic pressures turn political. many emerging and frontier economies must decide between raising taxes or slashing spending,” he cautions.

Like other nations, the Philippines will have to find a way to navigate these global risks that could impact its economic transformation goals. A study conducted by the Philippine institute for Development studies titled “macroeconomic Prospects of the Philippines in 2024-2025: toward Upper middle-income status” forecasts a 6.1 percent year-on-year GDP growth for 2025 and identifies key drivers of progress like enhanced macroeconomic stability, effective governance and deeper integration into international trade and investment networks.

While there are promising trends, the study highlights

challenges to growth in 2025, in particular the global economic slowdown that poses risks to demand for Philippine exports. to mitigate these risks, the Philippines must strengthen regional ties within AseAN and expand trade partnerships with the U.s., China and other global players, PiDs emphasizes. We definitely want to have stronger ties with countries that share our values and whose security interests align with ours, because a strong and stable economy will define the future of the Philippines. At the same time, we need to find ways in strengthening economic relations with China, whose economy is currently on a downward trend but inextricably intertwined with the rest of the world. there is always hope that a peaceful resolution to our maritime issues will come at some point in time. into intractable conflicts around the world.

But according to David Leonhardt of the New York times, trump is not an acrossthe-board isolationist, and i agree. trump is keenly aware that he must confront other powers that can undermine the U.s.’ might and interests, such as russia, China, and the oil-producing countries in the middle east. for that reason, israel will remain the pivot point of the American foreign policy in the middle east, which involves the rival regional (and islamic) powers iran, saudi Arabia, egypt, and Qatar.

Chip war in the indo-Pacific, the U.s faces its biggest rival, China. But decoupling from China in trade is not possible in the short term because it is the world’s manufacturing hub, after all. this is why Washington has continued to engage with Beijing bilaterally despite their fierce rivalry on the global stage. As long as taiwan supplies at least 90 percent of the U.s.’ demand for advanced chips, and its allies Japan and south Korea remain key players in the global semiconductor supply chain, the U.s. presence in Asia is here to stay. this means that these three east Asian allies plus the Philippines, which now has

nine sites for temporary hosting American troops, can continue to enjoy robust relations with the U.s. under trump. the Biden administration’s policy of revitalizing the U.s semiconductor industry through the bipartisan $50 billion ChiPs Act of 2022 can lead to selfreliance, but it will take time. thus, the marcos administration can become the darling of the second trump presidency if it takes advantage of this opportunity for renewed interest in the Philippines as a reliable ally—and defense— against China. But manila should go beyond military aid and press Washington to expand the Philippine semiconductor industry, turning it into a producer of advanced microchips, which historian Chris miller describes as the “new oil” (Chip War, 2022). expansion of chip making capacity is not only costly. such a transfer of technology requires trust and is only reserved for the closest of friends, as the Philippines has painfully proven to the U.s. since the fall of Bataan in 1942. miller says “military, economic, and geopolitical power are built on a foundation of computer chips.” thus, he says China “spends more money each year importing chips than it spends importing oil” to catch up to the U.s.’s technological superiority. such is the complexity of international relations that maintaining the balance of power in Asia will not be straightforward for the U.s the factors that complicate things are North Korea’s subservience to China and russia’s expanding interests in europe. the hermetic kingdom has continued to rely

chairman of public teachers’ group teachers’ Dignity Coalition (tDC), said their members have yet to undergo any training for the implementation of the Cse, contrary to statements made during a hearing in Congress last Wednesday, January 15 that several public school teachers have already undergone a fiveday training on the delivery of Cse lessons.

“We have not heard of any such training. We haven’t talked about it. i think if there is such, at least one member of the tDC could have been there,” Basas said.

Oversight in Congress, Pasig rep. roman romulo said the house of representatives will strictly use its oversight function once the Cse is enacted into law.

“if the schools will implement it, we really want to impose Congress’ oversight function to make sure that its implementation is right,” romulo said over radyo Pilipinas.

romulo, however, said that there is no existing law yet on Cse

“Deped clarified that their basis is not any Cse act. their basis is the rh (reproductive health) law,” romulo said.

Cibac party-list rep. eddie

Villanueva on thursday, January 16 strongly opposed the implementation of the Cse saying that the inclusion of school children as young as four years old in the Cse program will only promote “early sexualization.”

“Do you want people that you do not know, you do not know the character, to teach your children about sex, porn literacy, masturbation, oral sex and anal sex?” he asked.

ousted Chief Justice maria Lourdes sereno also raised “red flags” in the inclusion of Cse in Deped’s curriculum.

“this is why we sounded the alarm – because these international standards, which were referenced in both the bill and Deped memo 31, are not only ineffective in addressing the problem, they have harmful effects on children,” sereno said in a statement.

According to a video from Project Dalisay, under the Cse young children will be given information on masturbation and will be taught that they have their own sexual rights. sereno said that while the words “childhood masturbation” do not appear in the proposed bill on adolescent pregnancy, the reference to Cse and mandating that it be taught in school could only be taken to refer to the UNesCo and Who guidance that embody the international standards of Cse these, she said, discusses masturbation as normal, not harmful, and a topic explored at a very early age.

she urged a public discussion of the bill, which is already in the plenary in the senate, saying that none of people behind Project Dalisay were invited to discussions about the bill and they will not be able to raise questions as the senate tackles

our only access to make our position known is to reach out to our fellow filipinos through different media and to legislators who are willing to give us private hearings,” she said.

‘Future-ready’ students meanwhile, the Deped has vowed to provide more skills development training and information technology (it) equipment, especially to senior high school students as part of its ongoing efforts to produce a “future-ready workforce.”

in a speech during the Annual educators’ Congress 2025 held on thursday, education

Undersecretary Peter irving Corvera, on behalf of secretary Angara, said the Deped is set to enter into more public-private partnerships (PPPs) and to enhance its collaboration with other government agencies “in order to equip learners with the skills and tools to thrive in a fastchanging global workforce.”

the game is changing for our learners. to remain competitive, we need to ensure their technology literacy, much like athletes mastering new skills,” Corvera said.

thus, Corvera said, it is high time for filipino students, especially those in shs, to be technologically savvy as well as develop new skills. to prepare the students,

Corvera said the Deped is focused on closing infrastructure and digital gaps through PPPs. the Deped recently announced its target to construct 15,000 classrooms by 2027 through the PPP scheme.

Corvera said efforts are also underway to provide electricity and satellite internet access to underserved schools.

Corvera also cited the Deped’s partnership entered into recently with Khan Academy on the provision of training programs in english, science and mathematics for teachers “to ensure that they are equipped with knowledge and tools to raise learning standards.”

Corvera said the Deped has also reaffirmed its partnership with the technical education and skills Development Authority “to deepen industry ties, enhance work readiness courses and facilitate national certifications.” (With reports from Jose rodel clapano, Elizabeth Marcelo, Daphne Galvez)

‘Incognito’ banks on a strong ensemble for its next-level action story

THE latest action drama series “Incognito,” which debuted on Netflix Friday, Jan. 17, aims to elevate the actiondrama genre to new heights.

The ABS-CBN Star Creatives production is banking on an intriguing plot about private military contractors, highstakes action scenes shot from Palawan to Italy, and a wellassembled cast.

In the show, Richard Gutierrez, Baron Geisler, Maris Racal, Anthony Jennings, Kaila Estrada, Ian Veneracion and Daniel Padilla are seven individuals going through a lot of challenges in their personal lives, but who find themselves joining forces for special missions.

In an exclusive interview with The STAR , director Lester Pimentel Ong, whose previous action drama was

“The Iron Heart,” got to share the casting process for “Incognito.” He said the team focused on gathering the best possible cast members who are not only skilled in acting but also capable of handling the intense physical demands of the series.

In a previous mediacon, the cast had spoken about undergoing a four-month training program on martial arts, muay thai, war games and tactical combat.

“We had a concept that should be portrayed by a group of actors, and we really chose the best possible cast for this in terms of acting skills. No. 1, of course, as you know, sila ang isa sa ilan sa pinakamagaling dito sa Pilipinas that we can showcase to the world (when it comes to) the Filipino talent,” said direk Lester.

“Other than great acting skills, kailangan natin ng athleticism and physical

abilities,” he further told The STAR . “So, we did our homework, nag -research kami , pinanood namin yung mga previous projects nila at pinanood namin yung mga ibang appearances nila sa mga live TV shows.”

For Richard, who plays exNavy Seal Jose Bonifacio, shooting the action-packed series was both challenging and exhilarating. Maraming challenges, especially when you’re creating a new action series. There’s also a lot of pressure that comes with it. But knowing that you’re with a great group of actors, great production, and, you know, kami ni Daniel nagsama na rin kami sa ‘La Luna Sangre,’ so medyo gamay na namin ang isa’t isa ,” he said, referring to his previous collaboration with fellow lead actor. Richard also found comfort in the camaraderie of the cast. Besides Daniel, he most recently worked with Ian, Baron and Anthony in “The Iron Heart.” “ Yung samahan namin, kahit na mahirap yung mga tasks namin sa set, masaya pa rin namin itong ginagawa May biruan pa rin , you know, so we had a great (work) environment and that helps a lot with all the challenging conditions of the series.”

For Daniel, who plays former scout ranger Andres Malvar, “Incognito” marked his first major foray into hard action after starring mostly

Broadway star Eva Noblezada to feature at

The Soraya in Northridge on Feb. 1

LOS ANGELES – Pacific Jazz Orchestra, led by Artistic Director Chris Walden, spotlights the soaring vocals of GRAMMY© Award-winning and two-time Tony-nominated Broadway and West End star Eva Noblezada (The Great Gatsby, Hadestown, Miss Saigon, Les Misérables) one night only on Saturday, February 1, 2025, 8:00 pm, at The Soraya in Northridge.

The versatile artist, hailed as one of “Broadway’s biggest talents” (People Magazine), is featured on a program of jazz, Broadway, and pop songs hand-selected and arranged by Walden to showcase Noblezada’s remarkable vocal range. Pacific Jazz Orchestra, an LA-based 40-piece hybrid big band and jazz orchestra, made its sell-out debut performance at The Soraya (CSUN/Northridge) last season, which was heralded as the “Best Jazz Performance” by San Francisco Classical Voice’s (SFCV) Reader’s Choice Awards.

“Eva Noblezada is an electrifying artist who captivates audiences with her remarkable voice, commanding stage presence, and deeply emotional performances,” says Walden, a seven-time GRAMMY© Awardnominated composer who creates original arrangements for each of the ensemble’s unique shows. “We are thrilled to return to The Soraya with this new program, following the incredible reception we received for our debut performance there last spring.”

The concert on Saturday, February 1, at 8 p.m., launches The Soraya’s 4th Annual Jazz at Naz Festival, which was recently recognized “as one of the best winter jazz festivals on the West Coast as well as the jazz epicenter in Los Angeles” (SFCV).

Noblezada dazzled on Broadway as Eurydice in the original production of the mega-hit Hadestown, following her riveting performances in London’s revivals of Miss Saigon and Les Misérables. She is currently wowing audiences as Daisy Buchanan in the new Broadway musical adaptation of The Great Gatsby. On screen, she starred alongside Lea Salonga in Yellow Rose and voiced the lead role of Sam in Apple TV+’s Luck. Chris Walden has been hailed as a “distinguished conductor” (Audio Media International)

and “gifted and well-connected arranger-composer” (Santa Barbara Independent) who pens “exquisite string arrangements” (The Arts Desk), Walden “has built an illustrious career working behind the scenes with some of music’s biggest names” (grammy.com).

He has scored more than 40 feature and TV films and written more than 1,500 orchestral and big band arrangements for such artists as John Legend, Michael Bublé, Aretha Franklin, Paul McCartney, SEAL, Stevie Wonder, Rihanna, Barbra Streisand, and Josh Groban. He has also collaborated as an arranger and bandleader with jazz artists Diana Krall, Herb Alpert, Michael Brecker, Arturo Sandoval, and the Count Basie Orchestra and served as the lead arranger for the Academy Awards, Kennedy Center Honors, American Idol, and even the Super Bowl, arranging Jennifer Hudson’s National Anthem performance. In addition to working closely with producers David Foster, Tommy LiPuma, and Phil Ramone, Walden’s credits include conducting the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, Holland’s Metropole Orkest, Boston Pops, Philadelphia Orchestra, Pittsburgh Symphony, and WDR Big Band Cologne, among others.

The German-born musician, who performs on trumpet and flugelhorn as well, composed music for German films and TV before emigrating to Los Angeles at the age of 29. Walden, who lives in Los Angeles, has served as trustee on the national board of the Recording Academy and past president of the American Society of Music Arrangers and Composers (ASMAC).

Pacific Jazz Orchestra embraces and reflects the diverse and enthralling soundscape of Los Angeles, where the 40-piece ensemble was born, bred, and resides. The ultimate cross-over sensation, the nimble hybrid jazz big band and string orchestra comprised of powerhouse studio musicians deftly navigates musical styles ranging from jazz, Latin, hip hop, and R&B, to pop, musical theater, symphonic, and cinematic soundtracks.

Founded in 2022 by seventime GRAMMY®-nominated composer/arranger/conductor Chris Walden, Pacific Jazz

Orchestra has garnered critical acclaim for thrilling performances that “entertain, inspire, and enrich” (Variety). As artistic director and conductor, Walden creates a melting pot of original music and unique arrangements for every show, each with a specific theme, distinctive jazz flair, and lush orchestrations.

The ensemble is also noted for its ambitious collaborations with a wide range of guest artists, among them acclaimed singer/ songwriter Rufus Wainwright, singer/actress Katharine McPhee, GRAMMY®-winning vocal group TAKE 6, and Tony Award-winner Aaron Tveit. Other projects have featured eminent violinist Caroline Campbell, celebrated saxophonist Ben Wendel, GRAMMY®-winning artist Ledisi, R&B/soul singer Adam “AeJaye” Jackson, vocal stylist Sheléa, and veteran blues and funk singer Billy Valentine.

Pacific Jazz Orchestra presents an annual concert series at various Southern California venues and has toured to Japan with its 18-piece big band configuration. It is LA’s first resident jazz orchestra since 2006, when the Henry Mancini Institute closed its doors after an acclaimed tenyear run. A 501-(c)(3) nonprofit organization, Pacific Jazz Orchestra is sponsored in part by the Herb Alpert Foundation. Its Advisory Board Members include David Foster, Quincy Jones, Monica Mancini, Alan Bergman, Rickey Minor, Harvey Mason Jr., and Ledisi.

Coco Martin proud of Julia Montes being active in showbiz again

MANILA — Actor Coco Martin

could not be prouder of Julia Montes, as the actress was recently busy with a Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) entry and an online family drama series.

“Sobrang proud. Natutuwa ako kasi lahat ng ginagawa niya,” Coco told reporters last December during his launch as the brand ambassador for Toyota Tamaraw Next Gen held in Glorietta mall in Makati City.

Julia was the female lead star in the Metro Manila Film Festival 2024 entry “Topakk,” opposite Arjo Atayde.

Her Prime video series “Saving Grace” ended last Thursday, January 9. It is the Philippine adaptation of the 2010 Japanese drama “Mother.”

“Nae-excite ako kasi napa-proud ako sa kanya e kasi alam ko kung paano niya pinaghihirapan ang bawat gawa niya,” the actor said. He also complimented Julia’s take on her returning series comeback in “Saving Grace.”

Coco said he received feedback from Richard Somes, Julia’s director in “Topakk” and actress Sylvia Sanchez, who was one of the film’s producers.

“Kahit ako, nasabi ko kay Mommy Pie (Cherry Pie, his co-star in ‘FPJ’s Batang Quiapo’), natatakot ako ka-eksena si Jules kasi ang galing-galing niya Biruin mo, ang onti ng lights niya pero ang mata niya, ‘yung maturity,” Coco said. “Ako naman, wala akong magagawa kundi sumuporta at nasa likod niya,” the actor added.

Manila International Film Festival postpones its second edition due to wildfires

DUE to the devastating wildfires in Southern California, the Manila International Film Festival (MIFF) has postponed its second edition, scheduled from January 30 to February 2, to a later date this year that will be announced.

MIFF was going to show entries plus special screening films at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood and hold a closing night awards gala at the International Ballroom of The Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills.

“We are devastated by the tremendous impact of the wildfires on many people, including the Filipino community. At this time, as we pray for the people experiencing trauma and loss, we ask all to continue supporting the fire relief efforts.

Pechanga pledges $500K to aid LA fire victims

has had personnel, equipment and resources deployed to the Eaton and Palisades Fires, as well as their logistical command centers, since Tuesday, January 7. The Pechanga Resort Casino has also been offering discounts to residents without power due to sustained high winds and those impacted by the Los Angeles fires.

Pechanga has been there for the community when wildfire destroyed homes and land near the reservation. Similarly, the community supported Pechanga many years ago after a fast-moving fire tore through the reservation.

Sofronio Vasquez honors Bisaya roots in first major concert after ‘The Voice US’ win

SOFRONIO Vasquez, the first Filipino and Asian to win “The Voice USA,” is back in the Philippines to celebrate his historic victory. One of the highlights of his homecoming is his first major concert since winning the show, and it’s even more special because it’s happening in Cebu, where he gets to perform for his fellow Bisaya and honor his roots.

The 32-year-old Season 26 champion is set to take center stage during the Sinulog Festival weekend on Jan. 18, 8 p.m., at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino in Lahug. Primetime Events and Talent Management said that they managed to close the deal to mount a homecoming concert for Sofronio last Dec. 23, 2024. “VIP tickets are practically sold out already,” producer Mario Colmenares told this paper. But there are still a few Gold (P2,800 for reserved seating) and Silver (P1,800 for free seating) tickets available for purchase at SM Tickets and at the Waterfront lobby.

Sofronio, who hails from Ozamis, Misamis Occidental but whose father is Cebuano, is expected to share his journey from being a Mindanaoan singer — who either lost, got rejected or was close enough but never really topped national singing shows — to the world-class performer that he is now.

Before his homecoming,

yours truly alongside media colleagues Noel Ferrer, Bobby Requintina and Marinel Cruz got to talk to him at length in “Meet the Press,” a collab podcast for the Pod Network on Spotify.

During the interview, the former “Tawag ng Tanghalan” runnerup had something to say about netizens bashing TV contests he previously appeared in. “(I’ve read comments saying) ‘tingnan niyo ‘to, tinalo I really don’t think it’s a good idea. Although I appreciate them na nasa likod sila sa akin… but with me, if you happened to be the star of that event, no matter how great you are, if the stars don’t align for you, (nothing will happen). And I truly believe that time, it wasn’t for me. Maybe (‘The Voice’ U.S. win) happened because I worked hard at it (I persisted),” he said.

“What I’m thinking now is that had I been fortunate to win before, I don’t think I would have joined ‘The Voice U.S.’ Kasi nanalo na ako, nakuha ko na yung ultimate dream ko by that time. But I’m just blessed that it all happened to me and I can (say now) that I never lost hope.

“After that defeat and all those things that happened in the past, (I remember telling myself) kaya ko pa, feeling ko meron pa

That’s why I looked for a way and nabigla lang talaga ako na yung stars of being on ‘The Voice,’ it was like on the roadmap.”

More of these revelations, including how he “really used my being Pinoy” on the show, taking inspiration from such OPM icons as Regine Velasquez and Lani Misalucha in interpreting the very American songs and impressing international judges and audiences.

Meanwhile, here are some excerpts from The STAR’s exclusive chat with Sofronio in between his guestings now that he’s here in the country for two weeks.

How does it feel to be back in the Philippines?

“What is the term? Over the moon? Extra happy. I remember we’ve talked about how excited I am. But ngayon na nakauwi talaga ako, iba yung conclusion, iba yung recognition na nangyari sakin. Kumbaga, may idea na ako na naging impactful yung panalo ko for the Filipinos.

to feel the warmth in person.

So when I saw my Mama and people recognizing me, I felt, Ay, ito yung lugar ko. Ito yung mahal na mahal ako.’ Sobrang nakakatuwa.”

What was the first thing you did upon arriving home?

“Kumain. But I really spent time with my family. Umuwi ako kila Mama. Nag-request ako ng kahit mga an hour lang to spend time with my dogs because I missed them. Tapos, ayun, tuwang-tuwa ako na nagawa ko yun. Kumain lang kami ng itlog, pandesal sa bahay in the morning.”

So how long are you staying in the Philippines?

“I am staying for two weeks. I will be flying back on the 20th. So my schedule has really been hectic. (On TV appearances) I just did Fast Talk. Tomorrow, I will be on ‘TV Patrol’ and ‘24 Oras’ — so both networks. I have a vlog with Vice Ganda coming up. I have an interview with Karen Davila, I also have ‘Toni Talks,’ I also have Korina (Sanchez). Then, I will be back on ‘Tawag ng Tanghalan’ on ‘It’s Showtime’ for the grand finale. I don’t know if I’m allowed to announce but I would be a special judge.”

Is ABS-CBN’s talent management arm Star Magic (that arranged this interview) handling your career in the Philippines?

“I cannot say yes, I cannot say no. But with Star Magic, isa siya sa nag-send ng proposal and maganda naman yung proposal.

I still have to talk to producers… and executives who can talk to me and help with the decisionmaking. Of course, to honor the show, hopefully, makapag-arrive na ng magandang desisyon para gumalaw na kami. Gusto ko nang magtrabaho (I really want to work). But considering the Los Angeles wildfire (incident) now, baka mamo-move na naman kasi ang gulo-gulo

“But… mapalad lang din ako na nagkaroon ako ng moment na wala nang network wars. Kasi kung meron, mahihirapan ako ngayon. Now, it’s more seamless, kaya tuloy-tuloy lang.”

Can we talk about your Malacañang courtesy call? How was it?

“It was heartwarming, emotional. Alam mo naman, probinsyano tayo, ‘di ba? Mga Bisaya. We always see that place, Malacañang, in our books. Sa Hekasi, ganun. When I went there, it felt like, wow, I’m finally here. Nag-flashback lang na ang galing talaga ng pagkakataon to be able to meet the president (Bongbong Marcos).

“We had a sit-down. Mind you, ha, we rehearsed all that — where to sit, how you’d sing — because it’s protocol and he’s the president, right? But when we were there, nawala yung practice. Siya mismo yung nagsabi, ‘Andito na tayo, ayaw na natin masyadong pormal.’”

Your first-ever major concert since “The Voice” will be in Cebu before fellow Bisaya. How special is it for you?

“It is very special because my

Papa was born and made his life in Cebu. My father’s family is really from Cebu. They just moved to (Ozamiz). But he was born in Talisay City.

“Knowing that I will be able to sing for the Filipinos, for the Cebuanos, and it’s timely, it’s the Sinulog, alam mong grabe talaga

(you know how really special it is). It’s a celebration, a festive moment, among Bisaya eh.

“To be able to sing for the Cebuanos is just... ang sarapsarap (so great).. I’m excited to sing for the Bisaya audience because it’s a different feeling.”

What can the audiences expect from your solo concert in terms of repertoire?

“They have to expect great songs. Songs that I performed in my competitions here, they will hear them. I am performing with a live band and the band has been with me all throughout my career. I feel they will enjoy the concert. And all the songs that I performed in ‘The Voice’ that made an impact, I will sing them in Cebu.”

What’s next after the concert?

“The plan is to be back in Los Angeles, work, talk to people, make music and hopefully make it big. The goal is to make a hit. Because there’s going to be Season 27 already, which airs in February, so medyo maliit lang talaga yung time frame ko. Feeling ko naman kaya. Kailangan lang talagang pagsipagan. I’m excited! Kung hindi man ibibigay, at least we tried, right?”

Karylle slams campaign gimmicks: ‘Voters deserve more than jingles’

FILIPINO singer and TV host

Karylle has called on voters to demand more from election candidates, emphasizing the need for substance over gimmicks.

Speaking recently on the radio show “Good Times,” Karylle criticized campaign strategies that rely on jingles and TikTok dances, urging the public to focus on debates and platforms that address the nation’s issues.

“That’s why we have to demand it as voters, as people… It is our job as voters to be more noisy about… right namin na mapanood kayo (it is our right to watch you). Gusto namin marinig (we want to hear) more than your jingle, more than your TikTok dance, whatever. What are you about? We want to know. We have to demand this. This is our right,” she emphasized.

The “It’s Showtime” host underscored the importance of using “one’s brain” when it comes to choosing the right candidate to elect into positions of power.

“We have to reclaim our voice as the voting public, especially women. The right to suffrage — we didn’t really have that all this time, but we have it now. So we have to just be loud about it. And we have to be comfortable about being loud,” she stated.

“Let’s educate the voters and make sure that we are all educated. You, as a voter, should, you know, use your own brain… Even with religion, you have to discern for yourself. Because you have to think for yourself,” added the singerhost.

Karylle’s statement comes at the start of the campaign period for the upcoming 2025 midterm elections and the Iglesia ni

Cristo (INC)’s “peace rally” amid the feud between President Bongbong Marcos and Vice President Sara Duterte. Meanwhile, after headlining the musical play “Little Shop of Horrors” in 2024, Karylle recently joined the cast of the upcoming Filipinafronted reality show “Manila Matriarchs.”

reverend rodel G. BAlAGtAs

THESE have been challenging times for us, the residents of Los Angeles County. The wildfires have shaken us, overwhelming us with fear and anxiety, and evoking our compassion for those who have lost their homes and loved ones. We pray that these wildfires will cease through God’s power and might, along with the efforts of our firefighters, government and community leaders, and all agencies involved in our protection. We pray for everyone’s safety, unity, and collaboration among our local and national leaders to assist fire victims in recovering their homes, livelihoods, and businesses. Here at Incarnation, we have demonstrated our solidarity with fire victims through the Mass we held last Friday, January 10, presided over by Archbishop Jose Gomez and concelebrated by Bishop Albert Bahhuth, Bishop Matt Elshoff, and several priests and deacons. It was a touching and poignant Mass that united us in spirit and concern for our

In solidarity with fire victims and first responders

brothers and sisters who have suffered loss. We pray that we continue to show our solidarity with them not only through our prayers but also through our financial assistance.

This weekend, we will be having a second collection for the fire victims, which we will send to the archdiocese for proper management. Additionally, we are organizing a musical concert to raise funds.

I have also been in contact with the Glendale City Fire Department about helping our community prepare for emergencies by inviting interested parishioners to receive training through the CERT (Community Emergency Response Team). Fire Captain Tom Nicola will facilitate this training. Please call the parish office if you are interested. As we often hear, we can turn crises into opportunities to become a stronger community of faith and to grow in care and compassion for those suffering from these wildfires.

In her work, Preaching the New Lectionary, Dianne Bergant highlights a major theme from our Scripture readings this

Second Sunday in Ordinary Time: “One of the major themes gleaned from the readings for today is the call to newness. God summons us to something new, gives us a new name, provides us with new experiences, launches us into new ministries, and calls us to sing a new song of praise. All of this newness comes from God. As with the primordial creation, God creates out of chaos—God creates a new people out of one that was forsaken; creates a new land out of desolation; creates a new Spirit-filled community.”

May we never feel crushed or abandoned during these trying and anxious times. May we find hope and anticipate newness and transformation amidst the smoke and debris from these wildfires. In Christ’s love, Fr. Rodel “Odey” Balagtas

Do I need to file for a domestic violence restraining order?

Barrister’s Corner

Has your spouse or significant other abused you and or your minor children? If so, then you may seek protection by filing for a domestic violence restraining order in court against the abuser. If you are seeking protection from abuse perpetrated by your spouse or partner towards you and or your children, you may apply for a Domestic Violence Restraining Order. This can be filed on an emergency basis (Ex Parte) if you need immediate protection. This is usually filed using form DV-100, DV-101, DV-109, DV-110, CLETS-001, along with an extensive declaration and supporting evidence. The court will make a decision whether to grant you an emergency restraining order protection. Whether or not the court grants the emergency restraining order protection, the court will set a trial for your DVRO. The papers will have to be personally served on the alleged perpetrator of domestic violence at least 5 court days or more prior to the trial. The respondent will then have an opportunity to file a response, declaration, and evidence in opposition to your allegation. At the DVRO trial, both parties will have the opportunity to testify, present witnesses, and introduce evidence.

Under California law, “domestic violence” is defined broadly to include a pattern of abusive behavior used by one intimate partner against another to gain or maintain power and control. It’s not limited to physical violence and encompasses a wide range of abusive behaviors. Here are the main types of abuse recognized under California’s domestic violence statutes:

Physical Abuse

This is the most visible form of abuse and involves intentional physical harm or injury. This includes Hitting, slapping, punching, kicking, biting,

shoving, or choking, Pushing, grabbing, or restraining, using weapons or objects to inflict harm, depriving someone of necessary medical care, Physical intimidation or threats of physical harm

Emotional or Psychological

Abuse

This type of abuse aims to control and manipulate someone’s emotions and sense of self-worth. It can be just as damaging as physical abuse and includes:

1. Verbal abuse: Insults, name-calling, yelling, criticizing, and belittling

2. Intimidation: Threats of harm, destroying property, stalking, and displaying weapons

3. Isolation: Controlling who someone sees, where they go, and what they do

4. Humiliation: Publicly embarrassing someone, making them feel ashamed or worthless

5. Mind games and manipulation: Gaslighting, twisting reality, and making someone doubt their own perceptions

Sexual Abuse

This involves any unwanted sexual contact or activity without consent. It includes rape and sexual assault, sexual harassment, pressuring someone into unwanted sexual acts, withholding sex as a form of control, sexual exploitation or degradation

Financial Abuse

This type of abuse involves controlling someone’s finances and limiting their access to resources. It includes controlling all the finances and not allowing someone access to money, preventing someone from getting or keeping a job, exploiting someone’s financial resources , forcing someone to sign financial documents against their will, running up debt in someone else’s name

Stalking

This involves a pattern of unwanted attention, harassment, or contact that causes fear or emotional distress. It includes following or spying on someone, repeatedly contacting someone against their wishes, sending unwanted gifts or messages, monitoring someone’s online

activity such as Instagram or Facebook, threatening someone or their loved ones. Domestic violence is usually a pattern of multiple abusive behaviors used to exert power and control. A single incident can be serious, but it’s important to recognize the overall pattern. Many forms of abuse involve coercive control, which is a pattern of acts designed to take away someone’s liberty and independence. This can include isolating someone, regulating their daily behavior, and monitoring their activities. All forms of domestic violence can have severe emotional, psychological, and physical consequences for victims.

In addition to a restraining order, you may also ask for child custody, visitation, child support, spousal support, and attorney’s fee order within the domestic violence restraining order application.

The evidentiary burden of proof in court is a preponderance of the evidence. It means that it is more likely than not that a fact is true.

I REMEMBER I interviewed in 1992 then Cong. (now Pres.)

Bongbong Marcos in Baguio City as part of my article for the “New Year Forum: Their Wish for 1993” (published by the Philippine Daily Inquirer January 3, 1993).

Bongbong Marcos misses his dad

Here are excerpts: Bongbong Romualdez Marcos...remembers the Yuletide season as a time for family to be reunited, a celebration in the Christian faith and in the Filipino culture.

“As a child, Christmas was a happy time for us. Then I studied in London... When I was about to go home, to see my family, I always looked forward for Christmas and New Year, Santa Claus and the Three Kings. The same as anybody.

Then came the time they first spent their Christmas and New Year outside the Philippines... “In Hawaii, we happily spent Christmas together. We attended an evening mass. The next day, we opened our presents,” he says. “We tried to make the same Christmas as we spent it before. Christmas without my father was of course sad, but Iife must go on. During the 12 months after his death, we were not able to celebrate Christmas and New Year at all because he was always there, the center or head of the family. It was somehow something different... We’re happy now that at last we’re at home, except that my father’s body is still in Hawaii. But Christmas at home without my father is still the same. It’s not something complicated.” He reiterates that as to his father’s remains coming home.

“I don’t know. You have to ask my mother... There is much to be done aside from his body. There are still problems to be confronted, to be cleared back... The elections are already over. When President Ramos visited Laoag...we accorded him the honor that befitted the president as we hope that he would accord my father, a former president of the Philippines, due respect. Forgiveness? On New Year’s, maybe, because it’s a new start.”

For Bongbong Marcos, it is high time for the Filipinos to reconcile and unite as a nation to rebuild the country’s glaring economy.

On January 29, 2025, it will be Chinese New Year! I randomly asked three persons (third batch) to answer two questions: (1) What are your plans/projects this year? (2) Any insights/ learnings on the past year?

Here are their honest replies: Jess Espanola, the first Filipino to win an Emmy award which he won for working on “Eternal Moonshine of the Simpson Mind”: (1) “For the meantime I have no plan for anything this year 2025. I stopped teaching at Holy Angel University in Angeles City, Pampanga last year starting August due to the distance where I live from the school. I live in Marikina now. I have a prospect with Rafael Rivera Benitez, the president and founder of EREHWON Center for

the Arts about producing local animation featuring Filipino character and culture, anything to promote Filipino culture with all Filipino animators. But due to lack of resources, it remains a plan.” (2) “I have nothing to share about any insight. When I stopped teaching, I stopped everything. I have a plan to go back to studio arts – painting and sculpture, and photography – but I haven’t started it yet. I am still waiting for the right time to make it happen.”

Senator Chiz Escudero, a politician and lawyer from Sorsogon and holder of Master of Laws degree from Georgetown University: (1) “As Senate President, my primary focus for 2025 is to ensure that we address as many bills under the Common Legislative Agenda as possible within the limited time remaining for the 19th Congress, which will conclude in June this year. This reflects our commitment to the welfare and progress of our nation. We will work tirelessly to ensure that priority administration measures are acted upon for the benefit of all Filipinos... As we approach the May 2025 mid-term elections, I urge all Filipinos to exercise their right to vote wisely. Let us take this occasion to elect leaders who are truly committed to genuine change and progress. Addressing the pressing issue of poverty requires leaders who prioritize poverty alleviation and social reforms. By choosing leaders who champion equity

and prosperity for all, we can build a brighter future for our nation.” (2) “As we reflect on the challenges we faced in 2024, including the numerous natural calamities that battered our nation, we also celebrate the resilience and unity of the Filipino people. We give thanks to God, for it is only through His grace and mercy that we were able to overcome these challenges. Throughout it all, the resilience and deep faith of the Filipino people shone brightly.”

Chino Hansel Philyang, book author and broadcast journalist: (1) “My primary focus this year is to bring meaningful narratives to life through various mediums. As an author, I am thrilled to launch my latest book, Second Life Sonata, on Valentine’s Day. It explores profound themes of life, death, and the afterlife, weaving lessons from classical texts like The Bhagavad Gita, The Tibetan Book of the Dead, and The Bible. Beyond writing, I aim to continue hosting programs that inspires dialogue and change.

As a journalist, I plan to amplify stories that matter, showcasing the resilience and triumphs of individuals across communities.

Lastly, I’m diving into more collaborations, fostering impactful connections in both media and publishing.” (2) “2024 was a transformative year filled with challenges that reaffirmed my belief in perseverance and purpose. Writing Second Life Sonata reminded me of

the impermanence of life and the importance of cherishing every moment. As a journalist, I’ve seen how stories shape people, inspire hope, and drive action. The tight schedules and demanding projects taught me to embrace discipline and adapt quickly, especially after earning my Harvard Teaching Certificate amidst all this. Most importantly, 2024 reinforced that success isn’t measured by accolades but by the lives we touch and the authenticity we bring to our work. Looking ahead, I’m inspired to approach 2025 with a renewed sense of purpose, creativity, and commitment to both storytelling and service.”

‘Incognito’ banks on a strong ensemble...

in romance projects in the past. “ Merong pressure. Hindi pwedeng mawala ‘yun, ‘di ba ? The pressure should be there because if not, you’d become too relaxed or comfortable,” he admitted though stressing the pressure is more on how they could deliver a better show.

Apart from the ensemble cast, the action sequences are expected to be a major draw for audiences. Maris and Kaila, who are both newcomers to action roles, have expressed their excitement about what’s to come in “Incognito.”

Maris, who portrays a skilled spy named Gabriela Rivera, said, “I think yung sinasabi lagi ng team namin, we really try to elevate the action, drama, camera work and stunts for this show. So that’s what viewers should watch out for.

“It’s very, very, very good quality. It’s like watching a film. They shot it like a film. Even the colors of the scene and the cinematography are very beautiful as well, so I hope they watch out for it,” she added.

Kaila, on the other hand, recalled a particular scene during filming in Italy. “One of my favorite scenes — top of my head — that we shot was the group fight scene in Italy,” said the actress whose role is the top hacker Max Alvero.

“I feel like we had several

(favorite scenes), but there’s one in the bar, I feel like that was really fun to do. It was challenging, and also, it was really nice to work with the group of Italian stuntmen because the way they worked was very different.”

Kaila’s excitement over their scenes was also shared by Anthony, who takes on the role of “Tomas,” described as “rough but tough” with a “humble background.”

“My favorite scene was the swamp scene in Palawan,” he teased. “ Kasi biglaan lang, hindi dapat swamp ‘ yun At bigla na siyang naging swamp .” Direk Lester also reminisced about the difficulty of filming the swamp scene: “Waistdeep water kami , whole day of fighting — gun fight, fist fight. It was a fishing village na sa Palawan. We thought it would be low tide, but it was high tide that day, so it was submerging. We used that to our advantage, but it was so hard. Pero mas gumanda siya (the scene).”

Despite the challenges, safety remained a top priority on set. “Aside from the difficulties, physically, when we’re doing action, there is always risk involved,” said the filmmaker.

“We can only minimize risk, but we cannot eliminate risk. So I’m very grateful na laging safe naman yung nangyayari But everyone is alert and

everyone is very supportive of each other’s safety.”

As “Incognito” premieres, the cast and crew are confident that the series will resonate with audiences on multiple levels.

Ian, who plays the military tactician Greg Baterno in the series, shared why he’s “happy to be part of this team.”

“For me, definitely, this is the biggest project I’ve ever been involved in — in terms of cast, in terms of the stunts, in terms of location,” he said.

“It’s huge and the coverage of the story is expansive because of the nature of our job as military contractors. So it allows us to branch out, story-wise and location-wise. We can shoot anywhere in the world.”

As for Baron, who essays the role of the sniper and medic Miguel Tecson, he pointed out that the depth of the story goes beyond the action.

“It’s not just an action series. The story is very, very well-written by Sir Henry Quitain and directed by, for me, the best action director in the Philippines, and probably in Asia — direk Lester,” the actor shared.

“(Audiences) will learn a lot here because each character has something to fight for, stands for something, and is resilient. So many people will be able to relate when they watch this.” n

Lea Salonga to play The Witch in Philippine staging of ‘Into the Woods’

AWARD-WINNING Broadway superstar Lea Salonga is set to take on the iconic role of The Witch in the upcoming Philippine staging of “Into the Woods.”

Salonga is slated to follow in the footsteps of Hollywood legend Meryl Streep, whose portrayal of the character in the 2014 film adaptation earned her an Academy Award nomination.

This will mark Salonga’s return to Philippine theater after six years. She was last seen in “Sweeney Todd,” directed by the late theater maverick Bobby Garcia.

“The last show I did in Manila was a Stephen Sondheim masterpiece. Now, I’m coming in Into the Woods, yet another Sondheim masterpiece! If all I do for the rest of my life is perform in Sondheim shows, I’ll be very happy. But most of all, to my dear friend, ‘This one is for you, Bobby!’” she said.

The Olivier and Tony Award-winning actress who already played The Witch 30 years ago expressed how excited she was to reprise the role.

“It’s very exciting, as well as exhausting. Sondheim is no joke! Learning the material before day one of rehearsals takes a few weeks because his patterns can be puzzling and challenging but so rewarding once it all comes together,” she stated.

“It’s also cool that I get to revisit a role that I played as a younger adult. I was about 23 years old when I previously played The Witch. Playing her again 30 years later is going to be illuminating. So much life has happened in the intervening years. I’m hoping to bring as much of that as I can to this production,”

continued the actress-singer.

The Tony Award-winning musical, with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, intertwines beloved fairy tale characters in a dark exploration of mature themes and happy endings.

The Philippine production is slated to open in August at the Samsung Performing Arts Theater, promising a fresh take on the beloved classic.

“Into the Woods” is set to follow the success of Theatre Group Asia’s (TGA) “Request sa Radyo” in 2024, which was headlined by Salonga and Golden Globe and BAFTA nominee Dolly de Leon.

Aside from her noteworthy theater career, Salonga also rose to fame as the voice of Princess Jasmine from “Aladdin” and Fa Mulan for “Mulan and Mulan II.”

For her portrayal of the beloved princesses, she was bestowed the honor of “Disney Legend” in 2011. Salonga also previously released a new holiday album and staged a concert in Manila.

Andrea Brillantes believes God made her beautiful to face challenges in life

Actress Andrea Brillantes sees her good looks as a blessing that helped her go through challenges in life.

In a segment of “ASAP Natin ‘To,” Fyang Smith, the latest winner of “Pinoy Big Brother,” asked Andrea on how Andrea managed to achieve having a face like hers.

She was also asked for her reaction to the recent poll by TC Candler where she emerged on top of Top Beautiful Faces of 2024 poll.

“Siguro binigay sa’kin ni Lord yung ganitong mukha kasi madami akong pagdadaanan sa life,” Andrea said.

“So sabi niya, ’At least gawin nating maganda ’tong babaeng ‘to.’ Kasi minsan umaabot talaga ako sa point [na] alam mo ‘yon...”

she added. She thanked God for giving her a beautiful face.

“‘Lord, alam mo, thank you na

lang din sa mukha ko po,’” she said. “Sa mukha ko kasi na ’to, nabayaran ko ‘yung pampakain ng family ko, lahat ng ’to, nagagawa ko dahil sa face ko,” she added.

Recently, Andrea denied a basher’s claim that she underwent plastic surgery.

Andrea posted a TikTok video where she wrote, “My face card at nine years old.” It was a reply to a netizen who asked, “Baka ginawa ni doc?” The video shows a compilation of Andrea’s photos since she was young.

“Pretty since day one baby. Pretty with or without enchantments,” she captioned the post.

Andrea led the seven Filipinas, including former No. 1 Liza Soberano and new entry BINI’s Aiah, in the list of 100 most beautiful faces of 2024.

Navigating the Philippine real estate market: A guide for

Filipino Americans

SAB’s Review

THE Philippine real estate market experienced notable shifts in 2024, driven by the exit of POGO (Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators) and various economic and political factors. These developments have introduced new dynamics into the property market, creating both challenges and opportunities for 2025.

According to the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP), condominium prices in the Philippines dropped significantly by 9.4% year-on-year in Q3 2024, as part of a broader 2.3% decrease in the Residential Real Estate Price Index (RREPI)—the first contraction since 2021. This decline was particularly pronounced in Metro Manila (NCR), where residential property prices fell by 14.6% year-on-year, driven by sharp drops in duplexes, single houses, and condominiums.

For property owners, this presents an opportunity to rethink strategies and capitalize on the changing dynamics in the market.

The decline in property prices creates a unique window of opportunity for property owners:

• Duplex prices: Fell by an astounding 48.1%, presenting opportunities for repositioning in the market.

• Condominium prices: Dropped by 9.4%, creating urgency for sellers to align with shifting market demands.

• Regional shift: Prices in Metro Manila fell by 14.6%, while areas outside NCR saw a 3% increase, highlighting growing demand for suburban and provincial properties.

These changes make it the perfect time for property owners to reassess their portfolios and explore ways to maximize their investments.

Opportunities for property owners 1. Selling in a competitive market

In the U.S., this type of market condition is referred to as

How recent changes in PH real estate impact Filipino American property owners

a “Buyer’s Market.” If you’re still considering selling your property, it must now be done strategically. Before listing, it’s essential to evaluate:

• Cost of Acquisition: Assess your original investment.

• Capital Gains Tax: Determine the tax implications of your sale.

• Association Dues: Include unpaid dues in your calculations.

• Current Market Value: Compare against RFO (Ready-for-Occupancy) unit prices in your area.

• Exchange Rate Considerations: For U.S.-based owners, compare the value of the dollar now versus when you purchased the property to determine your true returns.

• Fund Repatriation: Understand how to transfer proceeds back to the U.S. and any taxes involved.

For vast land properties, options like joint ventures, leasing, or outright sales can also be explored. Sab Realty can provide a land study and customized proposal to help you make the best decision.

2. Leasing for steady income If selling isn’t the right option, leasing is a reliable way to generate consistent income while retaining ownership. Well-managed leasing strategies can attract tenants in urban areas with high rental demand.

Additionally, turning your property into an Airbnb rental can provide flexibility and higher earnings, especially in tourist-heavy locations. This topic will be explored further in the next column.

3. Property management for efficiency

Managing a property, especially from overseas, can be challenging. A dedicated property management team can handle:

• Tenant Relations: Finding reliable tenants and ensuring smooth communication.

• Maintenance: Keeping your property in excellent condition.

• Financial Oversight: Tracking income, expenses, and ensuring dues are paid.

Professional management ensures your property remains profitable, well-main-

tained, and stress-free.
